Chapter Summaries Chapter 1- Youth- how Lewis came to such an accomplished explorer as well as his connection to Jefferson

Chapter 2- Planter- Lewis life as a member of the Virginia gentry and his true desire to roam and explore rather than to own
land and manage a plantation Chapter 3- Soldier- Lewiss time in the military and his love and dedication to his country as well as his connection to Clark

Chapter 4- Jeffersons America- Jeffersons presidency and interest in gaining western lands: country should stretch from sea
to sea, also outlines the difficulties in governing such a large territory Chapter 5- Presidents Sec.- Lewis job as Jeffersons secretary, was introduced to Washington and Philadelphia elites as well as learned how to write vividly about geography and nature Chapter 6- Origins of Expedition- plans and motivations for the expedition, largely fueled by competition and foreign encroachment

Chapter 7- Preparing for the Expedition- Lewis prepares for the expedition by buying goods and learns from professors of
botany, astrology, and anatomy. pg. 80- Lewis was the perfect choice

Chapter 8- Washington to Pittsburgh- final preparations for expedition, Jeffersons official instructions, selection of Clark,
expedition didnt begin until Aug. 31st

Chapter 9- Down the Ohio- beginning of expedition on Ohio River to mouth of Mississippi, Ohio was shallow and slow and
corps was often forced to carry the keelboat Chapter 10- Up the Mississ. to Winter Camp- winter camp at St. Louis, surprised at the power of the Missouri and are drawn to its challenges Chapter 11- Ready to Depart- officially start the expedition with roughly twice as many members as was originally planned

Chapter 12- Up the Missouri- make it from St. Charles to the mouth of the Kansas River, discipline for misconduct was lashes
well laid on Chapter 13- Entering Indian Country- Lewis makes many new discoveries and the expedition must learn to negotiate with the Indians, gifts patronize the Indian chiefs instead of impress them

Chapter 14- Encounter with the Sioux- officers make more discoveries, corps must deal with numerous encounters with the
Sioux who are very confrontational and violent, Lewis must break his promise to Jefferson to make peace with the Sioux for the greater good of the expedition Chapter 15- To the Mandans- captains successfully make peace with the Mandans, they decide to stay the winter with them

Chapter 16- Winter at Fort Mandan- continue to make good relations with the Mandans and sure to keep the soldiers busy Chapter 17- Report from Fort Mandan- winter ends and the men are anxious to get back on the move, Captains send
numerous reports and specimens back to Jefferson, fail to give proper credit to the Mandans for sustaining them during the winter with corn and other crops Chapter 18- From Fort Mandan to Marias River- spring arrives and corps embarks on tougher half of the expedition, send keelboat downstream to St. Louis, river is tougher and more windy

Chapter 19- From Marias River to Great Falls- struggle to find the true source of the Missouri, encounter the Great Falls and
know that they made the correct choice

Chapter 20- The Great Portage- expedition reaches the Great Falls of the Missouri and must traverse them by land, Lewis iron
from boat covered with skins fails, and cottonwood is most useful tree in the Pacific Northwest Chapter 21- Looking for the Shoshones- go out in search of the Shoshones to trade for horses, dont take Sacagawea for some reason. Chapters 22- Over the Continental Divide- meet up with the Shoshones and trade for horse for the overland trip, make good relations with them.

Chapter 23- Lewis as Ethnographer: The Shoshones- Lewis describes the ethnology of the Shoshones quite brilliantly;
Shoshone braves are their own chiefs and rule their own actions.

Chapter 24- Over the Bitterroots- encounter tough times in the mountains, cant hunt so they kill a few horses instead, entire
party gets sick because of fish and root diet, Nez Perce could have easily overwhelmed the part but didnt.

Chapter 25- Down the Columbia- meet with the Chinooks, take the Columbia to the Pacific, not in America anymore, have to
find a good spot for winter camp.

Chapter 26- Fort Clatsop- spend the winter at Fort Clatsop, run out of trade goods and are forced to steal a canoe from the
Indians.

Chapter 27- Lewis as Ethnographer: The Clatsops and the Chinooks- Lewis describes the ethnology of the Chinooks and
Clatsops, again Indians were integral in the Corps survival through the winter. Chapter 28- Jefferson and the West- Jefferson is antsy because of lack of info from the Corps, apparently, Jefferson wanted to prevent a mad rush to the West, actually did the opposite by sending his most trusted official on an expedition, publicizing the expedition, and publishing Lewis journals outlining how beautiful and great the West was. Chapter 29- Return to the Nez Perce- expedition heads back east, Chinooks steal much from the party and Lewis has to control his temper, find much better relations with the Wolla-Wollas and Nez Perce. Chapter 30- The Lolo Trail- expedition makes it back over the Rocky Mountains, Lewis decides to split up the party into groups some as low as 3 members to gather more information, curious that he does this in hostile Indian territory.

Chapter 31- The Marias Exploration- encounter the Blackfeet, they try to steal from Lewis party of four, Fields kills one, party
forced to flee.

Chapter 32- The Last Leg- Lewis is shot in the ass; go from mountains to St. Louis rather quickly, everyone was very anxious to
get back home. Chapter 33- Reporting to the President- pg. 408- 1st paragraph after break, most quoted 3rd paragraph after break, suspension of strict construction Lewis reports to Jefferson as well as makes plans for the exploitation of riches from the Indian fur trade and publication of his journals. Chapter 34- Washington- Lewis finalizes his journals and distributes some of his seeds and specimens to higher authorities

Chapter 35- Philadelphia- Lewis spends a lot of money in completing his journals for publication, often has to pay others to do
the work for him, and wants to find a wife Chapter 36- Virginia- Lewis fades away for a while, comes up with plan for execution of American fur trading empire which would favor established elites instead of up-and-coming entrepreneurs Chapter 37- St. Louis- Lewis is appointed governor of Louisiana, has many questionable policies regarding Indian relations, does nothing with his journals Chapter 38- St. Louis- Lewis runs into opposition of his policies as governor, addicted to drugs and alcohol, chapter ends with Lewis going to Philadelphia to begin publication of his journals
