Multimedia In Education, Business and Entertainment. History

The history of Immersive Multimedia began with the concept of Virtual Reality. In the late 1960s, the desire of computer scientists and artists was to create, digitally-made near-toreality experiences through Interactive Multimedia. This became known as Virtual Reality. These terms refer to computer-generated simulation of reality with physical, spatial and visual dimensions. This interactive technology is used by architects, science and engineering researchers, and the arts, entertainment and video games industry. Virtual reality systems can simulate everything from a walk-through of a building prior to construction to simulations of aircraft flight and three dimensional computer games. Immersive technologies and virtual reality are powerful and compelling computer applications by which humans can interface and interact with computer generated environments in a way that mimics real life sense engagement. Although mostly known for its application in the entertainment industry the real promise lies in such fields as medicine, science, engineering, oil exploration, data visualization and the military to name just a few. As 3D and immersive technology becomes more integrated and available for a wide range of applications. It l requires well-designed user interfaces and innovative content for the next generation of computer games and integrated technology like mobile devices, distributed web systems and desktop applications.

'King Kong 360 3-D' Created by Peter Jackson, the World's Largest Most Intense 3-D Experience, Celebrates Premiere at Universal Studios Hollywood, The Entertainment Capital of L.A., with 3D Press Briefing by Peter Jackson in Advance of July 1 Opening. NEWSCOM Over two years ago, a fire ravaged the Universal Studios Hollywood backlot, turning several famous outdoor sets into ashes and apparently setting iconic giant gorilla King Kong free. At least, that's how the fact-meets-fantasy story line goes in "King Kong 360 3-D," an immersive addition to the studio tour opening July 1. Amusement and Theme Parks Travel and Tourism Culture and Lifestyle Rather than simply move past the real-life blaze that destroyed the theme park's original 30-foot-tall animatronic ape in 2008, the fire has become part of the revamped attraction's mythology, addressed by tour guides and featured in footage broadcast inside the tour's trams. One doctored image ominously depicts the figure of King Kong emerging from the smoke. "The fire presented us with a unique opportunity to rebuild King Kong, which had been without a doubt one of the most popular stops on the studio tour," said Universal Studios show producer Valerie Johnson-Redrow. "The initial thought was, of course, to go back to Peter Jackson's 2005 film and reimagine King Kong in an entirely new way for the studio tour."

If HD is used to create a more immersive experience for the gamer and the goal of a game is to include the player at the greatest level possible then it is important. -Kent Simon, Novalogic Yes... it is very important. High definition is the number one factor that can influence the PC gamer to purchase the console version over the PC version. Not only does HD help generate an interest in console games from the PC gamer market, but it also brings the original artistic vision of the game as it was intended by the developer to a high definition console system. No one wants to pay over 1000.00 US dollars to see a larger image of an 8-bit Mario, but someone will not think twice about spending that kind of money if it means their console games will look even better and more realistic than a standard television. Of course HD is only important if the game developer takes the time to build the game from the ground up using HD visuals. Take Gran Turismo 4, HD was thrown in as an afterthought... a very good decision pressured by the fan feedback during development, but clearly thought of after the code base was written for standard telvisions. I know I get tired of watching the game switch in and out of HD format based on where I am at in the game. -Douglas Matulewic, MechLife

Destiny Conferencing Reports Rapid Growth, Increased Orders with HSL's Thoughts and Analysis August 30, 2006 Destiny Conferencing released a press release announcing rapid growth and increased orders. The complete press release can be found Here. Excerpts below with my emphasis. Clearly, people are thinking about reducing their dependence on travel because of the recent difficulties, but we think that this goes deeper than that. There seems to be a rapidly growing realization of how telepresence improves time management by facilitating communication between widely separated participants," Allen added.

Spatially Immersive Systems Fakespace Systems' CAVE products simulate a VR environment for various purposes, such as testing the design of a new building (train station above) or learning how to operate a Caterpillar bulldozer (below). In the latter, the steering wheel on the left meets the real steering wheel on the right in virtual space. CAVE was developed by the Electronic Visualization Laboratory at the University of Illinois in the early 1990s. 3D Immersive Viewing System

Now this is what I call a 3d Screen. The Visionstation is a 3D Immersive Viewing System that can be used for many applications. Sure it can be used for business and stuff but what I think were all reallly interested in is using it for gaming. This screen has a 160 degree display that uses the depth of it to give off the illusion of 3D minus the goofy glasses. It is 1.5 meters tall and the price.well it isnt posted on their site. So.it is probably a couple thousand dollars.

INNOVATING EDUCATION IN SOUTH AFRICA: FORMULA INTERACTIVE PRESENTS A VIRTUAL, YET TANGIBLE CHEMISTRY LAB. Formula D Interactive recently developed a Virtual Chemistry Lab, as a safe, low cost alternative to the standard chemistry laboratory in schools. The heart of the system is a so called object recognition table. The interactive platform consists of a 50 High Definition rear projected screen prepped with lots of computing power. Sophisticated pattern recognition technology allows users to navigate content information by placing physical cards onto the tables glass surface.
