SUNIDHI CHAUHAN: A spectacular performance

Finally, the original Sheela Ki Jawani sizzled on the stage of Telstra Clear Centre and what a show it was. Sunidhi Chauhan, with all her talent, had to deliver a great show. She made the auditorium thrilled with her lovely numbers and left the crowds gasping for more. The versatile singer has come out of the shadow of big names like KK and Shaan, with whom she has performed earlier. Yes, she is a star on her own right and rightfully so. People remember Sunidhi adding grace to the KK show last year, but this year seeing her perform solo, was a whole new experience. Sunidhi started with a bang with some fast numbers and then dolled out melodies in the middle of the show. Both were very well handled by her. She was also getting the grasp of keeping the audience involved with her frequent songs for Punjabis and the Gujju crowd. The live orchestra was very good giving a very great support with the music. Another mention has to be made of the actor in her troupe, Raviraj Kande, who came in the intermission with his great comic act on various actors and their styles. He also did a

slapstick gig on various Indian communities like the Gujju, Punjabis and South Indians. People were rolling with laughter in this entertaining piece. The show was supported by very good event management by CFI events (Ram Iyer). The promoter, Dave, thanked his team without whom this event would not have been possible: Ram Iyer, Dinesh Raniga, Tasheel, Hiren and other team members. The sound, which is of essence in such a show, was very well executed. The technical team did a good job of keeping the show up to the mark. Dharmesh Parikh did the light and sound for the show and Litu managed the video screens. Kudos to promoter DJ Dave and his team for bringing a great talent to Auckland and doing a lovely show out of it. A day after the show Dave told us, the managers were very happy with the way the show went, the hospitality offered to the crew and the success of the show. Im sure the Desi girl left Auckland with some good memories of a great show, just as we did.

They identified that the school has lot of different cultures, religions, languages and backgrounds that make up MHP's diverse school community. The group, calling themselves Team TEACH (Technology, English And Cultural Helpers), came together as part of their Community Problem Solving (CmPS) project and identified the growing community and possible disconnect between the school and the community after brainstorming a range of potential problems within the wider community.

Immigration policies Recent family category changes

Immigration has always been a concern to all the migrants in New Zealand. In the last 20 years, there have been a number of significant changes in immigration policies in New Zealand. One of the recent changes to the immigration policy is the change to the family category. There are a number of family residence categories which provides residence to family members of New Zealand citizens and permanent residents. Immigration New Zealand has made some changes recently in Family Residence Category that will help New Zealand attract and retain skilled migrants, and ensure that family migrants can settle well and are self-sufficient. To grow New Zealands economy, New Zealand always looks for skilled migrants. Being able to sponsor the parents to live in New Zealand is an important pathway to hold skilled migrants in New Zealand. These policy changes introduce more systematic and easy process for the skilled migrants who wish to sponsor their parents for residence. The key changes to the policy are: Parent Category In July 2012, new requirements for the Parent residence category will come into effect. The requirements include: Expression of Interest: After July 2012, people will be able to express their interest in applying for New Zealand residence under the Parent Category by completing the appropriate EOI form and submitting it to INZ, along with a NZ$420 fee. EOIs will be entered into the Parent Category pool under either tier one or tier two, depending on the requirements they claim to meet. EOIs will be drawn from the pool every three months. After this, the people who submitted these EOIs will either be invited to apply for residence or have their EOIs declined Two Tier System: The new Parent Category will have two tiers with separate requirements applying to each. Applications that meet the tier one criteria will be given priority processing. All applicants must meet the general requirements of family relationship (with their sponsor), and being of good health and character. Tier one People applying under tier one must meet the following requirements: l They must have either: - a guaranteed life-time minimum income of $27,203 per annum for a single person or $39,890 per annum for a couple, or - minimum settlement funds of $500,000 which they bring to New Zealand, or - a sponsoring adult child who has an income of at least $65,000 per annum or $90,000 per annum when combined with the sponsors partners income, and l They must not have any dependent children, and l They must meet at least two competencies of International English Language Testing System (IELTS) Level 4.0, meet an equivalent requirement or pre-purchase English for Speakers of Other Languages tuition at a cost of $1,735. Tier two People applying under tier two must meet all of the following requirements: l They must have a sponsoring adult child who has an income of at least $33,675 per annum. l If the applicants have other adult children, the children must all live lawfully and permanently outside the country in which the parents live. l They must not have any dependent children. l They must meet at least two competencies of IELTS Level 4.0, meet an equivalent requirement or pre-purchase English for Speakers of Other Languages tuition at a cost of $1,735. Sibling and Adult Children Category Applications for Sibling and Adult Child Category will close permanently on 16 May 2012. From this date New Zealand citizens and residents will no longer be able to sponsor their siblings or adult children for New Zealand residence. However, applications already received will continue to be processed. In addition: siblings and adult children will continue to receive 10 points within the Skilled Migrant Category on the basis of their family relationship Residence requirements for young adult children The young adult children aged 18 to 20 may be eligible for residence - even if they have a job in their home country - provided they are single, have no children and are included, or were declared, in their parents residence application. Previously adult children in that age group were not able to be included in their parents residence application if they had a job in their home country. Those aged 21 to 24 will still only be eligible to migrate if they can show that they are financially dependent. Changes to the sponsorship period Sponsorship includes a responsibility on the New Zealand sponsor to ensure the sponsored person has accommodation and maintenance for a specified time while in New Zealand. Sponsors are also responsible for the costs of outward travel (if repatriation or deportation is required). The sponsorship term for parents will initially remain at five years, but the Government has decided it will amend the Immigration Act 2009 at some time in the future to extend the sponsorship term for family-sponsored migrants to 10 years. The timing for this amendment has not been decided. The way to rebuild the Indian Ocean region

ARVINd KUmAR
An over-arching joint business council of the countries in the Indian Ocean region/Indian sub continent has been proposed to better take care of enterprise in the region. This was one of the suggestions at a recent gathering of the regions political and New Zealand business leaders at a luncheon in Auckland titled Rebuilding the Indian Ocean Region. Keynote speaker at the luncheon address, organized by the International College of Auckland (ICA), was former Sri Lankan Prime Minister Ranil Wickremsinghe, who emphaenjoys. India has the advantage of the diaspora in some of these countries. The Tamils in Singapore and Malaysia, Mumbai trading links with the Gulf, and the millions of Indian migrant workers in the Middle East, eat and South Africa also has influential Indian community consisting mainly of Gujaratis, whether Hindus, Jains or the minority Muslim sects of Borahs and Ismailis. Eighty per cent of Mauritians are of Indian descent. This network helps Indian investments and trade in the region. There are also other major players in the region such as

sized the changing global economic activity and how countries in the Indian Ocean region could provide mutual benefit to each other. ICA principal James Zhu welcomed guests to the luncheon also attended by keynote guests Bhav Dhillon, managing director of Cemix Ltd based in Auckland. The rising populations and the rising incomes of the Indian Ocean Region will put in place the building blocks for intra-regional trade development, said Mr Wickremsinghe, the current Sri lankan Leader of the Opposition. With doubling of population there will be more mouths to feed. As incomes increase the people will also move up the food chain creating a bigger demand. Feeding an additional 1.8 billion people, over half of them from South and South East Asia is both a challenge and an opportunity, Mr Wickremsinghe said. The excess land to feed the additional mouths is available in Mozambique, Malawi, Zambia, Tanzania, Uganda, Southern Sudan and Madagascar. The low cost global producers such as Thailand, Australia can help Africas commercial cultivation of crops, and the breeding of animals. Furthermore, manufacturing inputs such as fertilizer as well as value addition to these agricultural products will help to increase Africas jobs and income, Mr Wickremsinghe said. The logistics of bringing the food to the retailers in Asia will also result in the development of ports and shipping. Therefore, combining the hungry mouths of Asia with the empty lands of Eastern Africas Savanna zone, bringing together the investments and technology globally will be a win-win for all starting from the subsistence of small holders of Africa. Mr Wickremsinghe sadid the emerging Indian Ocean regional economy would not be based on the hub US and spokes model of the APEC. While US is the hub, India, which is the lead economy, will also be the third largest by 2050 it will not have the dominance that US

Malaysia, Singapore, Middle East Oil States, Australia, China, Japan, US and the EU. This will enable India to take the lead in co-ordinating the development of intraregional trade. It has to persuade the heads of Government of the region to buy in to a new mechanism for economic co-operation. IOR-RA certainly does not fit this bill, Mr Wickremsinghe said. If it is to succeed, India has to address two issues. Firstly, the status of China in the Indian Ocean. With the establishment Gwadar and another port in Myanmar it can and will claim a statute similar to the landlocked countries of Nepal and Afghanistan. Secondly, the establishing of a special vehicle to provide long term development finance for the regional enterprise development. Today the World Bank and ADB focuses mainly on poverty. Wenceslaus Anthony, chairman of the advisory board of the IAC and chair of the IndiaNZ Business Council, lauded the initiatives proposed by the speakers. As a dynamic young politician, Mr Wickremesinghe initiated radical educational reforms in the 1980s aimed at the qualitative improvement of school education with a special focus on English, Technology and Computer. He also restructured the Education Administrative Service and energised the youth services in Sri Lanka with extensive motivational and skill development programmmes. Later on, as the Minister of Industries, Science and Technology, he was responsible for Sri Lankas second round of economic liberalisation that commenced in 1989 with the focus on financial de-regularization and industrial promotion in rural areas through infrastructure development and the institution of industrial estates, Mr Anthony said. By then a seasoned legislator, Mr Wickremesinghe was appointed the Leader of the House, and then Prime Minister in 1993. The man behind the whole function, James Zhu, principal of the International College, presented distinguished guests with mementos.

New Zealand
I went in to this interview with some preconceived notions of what a DJ was like but was pleasantly surprised after meeting Mirza Areeb Baig Taimoori, better known as DJ Areeb. A Network Engineer in the day and a DJ by night. And he donates all his income from deejaying to charity.
ShReyA BAKhShI
concert. He told me about the idea behind R Lounge a restaurant during the day and a night club at night. At that time I had reached a certain level in the Bollywood deejaying scene and was looking to play at mainstream night clubs in Auckland and was lucky to have played at places like Lennon, Carpark, Code and Bunglow 8. I was pushing boundaries for myself and was looking to play more English music, but went back to Bollywood with R Lounge. So we came up with the idea of a classy Bollywood night club for the youth and it worked. Our idea is to make R Lounge into a place which will see international artists coming in and playing from all over the world, but Bollywood fusion DJs. Deejaying started off as a hobby and I dont know when it turned in to something more serious. Even today when people say Oh youre a DJ and it takes me a second to register. I live my project engineer life separately, full time and this is still a hobby. I have never charged for deejaying. Whatever money I get from deejaying I give it to charity. Because I earn my living as a project engineer, that pays my bills. My whole idea was to start a charity organization and thats what I do with the money I get from deejaying. I dont and never have put a price on myself. I would like to produce more remixes in the future though and the ones I have done have been popular, but at the moment I dont have enough time. I have work, R Lounge, I give time to my family and then whatever little time I have left, I sleep, its my other hobby. Do you have any message for the young people who want to pursue their hobby like you did? You know, my parents were never in favour of deejaying. I come from a family where Indian culture and language were a primary focus. We always spoke Hindi at home. And then academics were always important. So I was like a black sheep in the family. Initially it was very hard to be a DJ. But then everyone saw that if your successfully pursuing your profession than there is no harm in pursuing your hobby. So I would like to tell all the young people that get your qualifications first, become successful in your profession and then pursue your hobby, because having a hobby is an excellent thing as long as you are sorted professionally. And one other thing is, be proud that youre Indian, because thats where you come from. Always stick to your roots no matter how long youve been in New Zealand.

The DJ with a

.Areeb, how long have you been in New Zealand? For about 20 years now, Ive done my schooling and university here. What did you study at University? I did three years of software engineering before I decided it was the most boring thing ever and then I changed my degree and started from scratch and did Network and Systems and now I work for Datacom and I do that Monday to Friday, though I get tied up with deejaying and this on a regular basis. Because here in the Desi scene, deejaying not just about going there, playing and getting out, you have to take care of your marketing and everything else that comes with it. So how did Deejaying come about? I was always interested in music, but deejaying just happened. There were a lot of night clubs here but there was no proper Bollywood night club. So we, friends, started having our own house parties and thats when the whole deejaying thing kicked in. I was doing well and so got myself trained in that. Our choice of music was slightly different than the typical Bollywood night clubs. The Bollywood night clubs here were serving the older generation. There as nothing for the younger Indian generation. So we thought that we should start something for the young Indians. We started off in St Lukes, but with much skepticism as we werent sure how people would take to a night club in a shopping mall. But we got a great response. We quickly

went viral and got a great response. After that we got a lot of publicity and got support from students. We required a quality Desi night club, the market was open and we took hold of the opportunity. How would you say your style of music was different from the typical music being played at the Bollywood night clubs? It was massively different, singers like Udit Narayan and Kumar Sanu were being played in night clubs and thats where the youth didnt connect. Times had changed rapidly in India, especially after the open market in 98. And this is something that needed to be picked up by the DJs here, but it didnt happen because they came from an older generation. This lead to declining numbers of youth in Bollywood night clubs and along with that there was a taboo attached to the Bollywood night club scene. People thought a Desi night club meant trouble and our biggest task was to change that. It can be classy as a mainstream night club. And I had an added advantage as I had worked with a lot of youth and knew the music scene. So our music was more Electro / House based. So we brought it to the level where both the white and the Desi crowd could connect. So thats where we were a little different in comparison to the rest. Was this kind of music an added advantage in terms of the kind of places you played at?

No, cause we started very low. But suddenly we gained a lot of popularity. People started following us. We learnt how to market ourselves. And then we got promoters for these Bollywood shows coming up to us, asking to promote their shows at our night clubs. When you think of typical Desi DJs, theyre just DJs, for most of them its a full time thing. But for us (me and my team), we were professionals. Were project engineers and we knew how to market things, how to manage a project. So our approach was more qualified in terms of the research we conducted as to why Bollywood night clubs didnt work. There were Indians, who were going out, but they just didnt go to a Bollywood night club and we took a professional marketing approach to the situation and looked to solve it that way. We researched on how DJs in India were playing and we found out that they were way ahead of us. They were competing at a world level. So we used that and mixed it with the local talent here and served it that way. So was this the idea behind R Lounge then, having a more youth focused place? R Lounge came much later. Before that we ran for 3 successful years in Moas Nest. We did our first show with Atif Aslam and then Imran Khan. Both shows were successful. So after this, Ravi from the Raviz group approached me, especially after seeing me at the Imran Khan

Cause I am a firm believer in the fact that a person who looses their roots is a person lost. So we want to stick to our roots. Culture is important and is my identity. So after all this success, where do you see yourself in the future, with deejaying?

Co-ordinated steps to An evening of classical gems minimise alcohol harm

The regions first alcohol harm reduction strategy has been adopted by Auckland Council, reinforcing the proposed actions from the Mayors alcohol and community safety taskforce. The strategy, adopted by the Regional Development and Operations Committee last week, will guide the council toward a single approach to the management of alcohol in Auckland. Along with the actions identified with our new taskforce, this strategy will help us reduce alcohol-related harm in our communities and create a safe, healthy city where alcohol can be enjoyed, not abused, Mayor Len Brown said. The strategy will clarify how Auckland Council should work with government and non-governmental agencies, community organisations, the health and education sectors, NZ Police and the hospitality industry. Both the strategy and the taskforce action plan look to balance responsible enjoyment of alcohol, the economic benefits of the hospitality and entertainment sector, while managing the social costs of alcohol. The council is looking to increase public education and industry awareness of obligations, work in collaboration with public service agencies, engage communities in local solutions, and work closely with police on the enforcement of liquor bans and licence breaches. The strategy will build the appropriate regulatory tools into the Unitary Plan and the council will continue to make submissions to central government on alcohol-related legislation. The Mayor is urging the government to prioritise passing the Alcohol Reform Bill so Auckland Council and local communities can have more say over the number, location and opening hours of liquor outlets and the policies that regulate alcohol in their areas. The taskforce weve put together and the strategy we have adopted have very clear objectives. Were aiming to curb anti-social behaviour caused by alcohol and make sure Auckland is a welcoming and safe environment for residents, workers and visitors, Mr Brown said. In order to succeed, we need the government to pass the Alcohol Reform Bill. Auckland ready to tackle waste

Auckland now has its first regionwide plan for tackling waste to reduce harm to the environment and help ensure Auckland is the worlds most liveable city. Auckland Council recently adopted a new Waste Management and Minimisation Plan (WMMP) to reduce the 1.2 million tonnes of waste Auckland currently sends to landfill each year an amount that would cover the rugby field at Eden Park to twice the height of the Sky Tower annually. Deputy Mayor Penny Hulse says the plan, well supported in public submissions, provides a blueprint for reducing household and commercial waste during the next few years and beyond. About 80 per cent of submitters supported the target of a 30 per cent reduction in domestic kerbside waste sent to landfill by 2018. Now its time to roll up our sleeves and work with the waste industry, businesses, local boards and the community to achieve this ambitious goal. Ms Hulse says the actions outlined in the plan will be rolled out in stages during the next few years, following work to ensure households and businesses are prepared for changes. Major changes to kerbside collections will not start until 2015, as current contracts expire. A lot of communication and community education will happen prior to ensure people know how they can reduce waste and keep user-changes to a minimum, particularly in Manukau and central Auckland where disposer-pays for rubbish will be new but where targeted rates for rubbish collection will reduce. Cr Hulse allayed fears illegal dumping would spike when disposerpays is introduced across Auckland. Council data shows illegal dumping did not increase when the former North Shore and Waitakere councils made the change to disposer pays. By carrying out comprehensive education, monitoring and enforcement action as they did were confident any increase in illegal dumping will be limited. Its important to note, too, that householders will be able to choose the size of refuse bin they use and how often they put it out for collection. So even if additional rubbish is added by another person, the householder will not pay more, as the charge is per lift, not by weight. Councillor Noelene Raffills, who chaired the hearings panel on the draft WMMP, says the final plan adopted shows councillors have listened to the public and addressed various community and industry concerns. Weve recognised the need for flexible options for rural areas, the Hauraki Gulf islands and multi-unit dwellings for example. Weve also responded to feedback about working collaboratively with the waste industry, community groups and others to pilot, develop or implement solutions. Key elements of the WMMP include: * standardising the way households pay for refuse collection (by extending disposer-pays region wide) and introducing wheelie bins across the region, with a choice of bin sizes from 60 litre to 240 litre in urban areas and the option of a pre-paid bag for rural areas and the Hauraki Gulf islands; * retaining a rates-funded recycling collection, with a choice of wheelie bins ranging in size from 140 litre to 360 litre and an increase in the range of recyclables accepted; * introducing a rates-funded organic waste collection in urban areas; * providing a rates-funded inorganic collection for households regionwide; * implementing communications and community engagement activity to help householders and businesses adapt to the changes and reduce waste to landfill.

Council votes to step up focus on heritage matters

Auckland Councils Regional Development and Operations Committee (RDOC) has agreed unanimously on a raft of recommendations to strengthen the focus on built heritage through the planning process. The committee met today to discuss the issue of built heritage. There is still a lot of work to be done in this area, said RDOC Chair Ann Hartley. We need to be clear what is going to be notified and what is not, under the forthcoming Unitary Plan. We also need to extend the protection for historic homes and buildings throughout the Auckland region, not just those in the inner city suburbs which are in Residential 1 and 2 zones. Cr Hartley thanked council staff for their professional approach in dealing with heritage and character matters, and said that there was also an improved attitude among developers. She noted the ongoing interest of local boards in heritage matters and their collaboration with staff and councillors through the development of the Unitary Plan, and acknowledged the long history of the issue of built heritage, noting that the protections that exist today are the result of many years of hard work by previous councillors. Cr Hartley said the Britomart Precinct is a great example of where Aucklands heritage was protected and enhanced, and said that prior to 2005 the demolition of buildings in many of Aucklands older suburbs was automatically permitted. The committee heard expert evidence on where special circumstances provision in the RMA could enable notification of resource consent applications for the demolition or significant modification of pre-1940s houses in inner city suburbs (Residential 1 and 2 zones). Committee members agreed that it would be useful to provide guidelines on when special circumstances might apply to such applications. In recent months there have been three cases in which council considered there were special circumstances warranting notification and this test is routinely applied to all resource consent applications, said Cr Hartley. The councils Heritage Advisory Panel has recommended against making changes to the District Plan itself to allow notification of such applications, as this would be too time-consuming and costly. The Mayor says he is looking forward to the drafting of Unitary Plan rules, where the community would have the opportunity to discuss these issues. Council has agreed that the best outcome is to ensure that there are clear rules in the upcoming Unitary Plan to ensure that heritage and historic character buildings are dealt with in a way that meets the expectations of the wider community, says Len Brown. Auckland Council is currently reviewing all land use and regional controls. Its recommendations, which will form a new Unitary Plan for the whole of the Auckland region, will be open for public review in March next year.

On Board the Special Aircraft, June 23: Prime Minister Manmohan Singh on his way back to India after attending the G20 Summit in Mexico's Los Cabos and then the UN sponsored Earth Summit on sustainable development in Rio de Janerio in Brazil answered many questions of journalists ranging from the ongoing economic crisis and fall of rupee to the troubles with the United Progressive Alliance (UPA) allies like Trinamool Congress. Excerpts:
IWK BUReAU
QUESTIon: Sir, at G20 India indicated contribution of 10 billion US$ to IMF kitty to sort out Euro crisis but surprisingly even this well intentioned move has been wrongly interpreted in the country. Would you like to say something? PM: We are members of the International Monetary Fund and we would like the IMF to play an important role in resolving various difficulties that are on the horizon in the international economy and financial system. And if this Fund has to play its requisite role then it has been agreed at Los Cabos that the member countries of the Fund will contribute 450 billion Dollars to enable the IMF to come to the rescue of countries in need. As a responsible member of the international community, it was our bounden duty also to make our contribution. And let me say that before making this announcement I had a discussion among the BRICS leaders and all BRICS leaders have made similar contributions. So I dont think there is anything wrong in our contributing to the IMF. This contribution will be used only when needed and it will also continue to be part of Indias reserves. QUESTIon: Sir, during your address in Mexico you spent a long time talking about the sharp slowdown in the Indian economy, putting in place transparent and stable policies, correcting some of the inherent constraints and taking tough decisions including controlling subsidies. Do you think equations have changed enough in the run up to the Presidential polls to push forward some of these tough decisions quickly? PM: We owe it to our country to take all the necessary decisions which would return the country to a high growth path. There are problems with regard to the fiscal management. We will tackle that problem effectively and credibly. There are problems with regard to management of the balance of payments deficit on the current account. Those problems also we will tackle. QUESTIon: I have a question on black money. What was the sense during G20 on black money and has it become irrelevant or has there been any improvement? PM: It is too early to say one way or the other. The problem is there but there are no magic solutions available. I think it is going to be a slow process. QUESTIon: Are you going to reshuffle your Cabinet soon? Are you going to see some new partners joining UPA? PM: I think that is a legitimate expectation. You will get to know about it when it takes place. QUESTIon: You said that you are going to take a number of steps to restore confidence in the Indian Economy but three of the most im-

We have to work harder than ever before to restore the economy Manmohan Singh

portant things are really state subjects- land, energy and water. When we talk to businessmen, they say that without these three things they are unable to proceed with investments. So how does the Central Government propose to resolve issues which can actually be solved by State Governments? PM: We are a semi federal polity and therefore cooperative federalism makes it incumbent on all political parties, those ruling at the Centre and those ruling in States, to work together to find credible ways and means to get this country moving again on to the high growth path which we have achieved until 2011-12. QUESTIon: Indian economy is liberalised for 20 years now of which 5 years you were the Finance Minister and then for 8 years you were the Prime Minister. So you know the economy inside out well. What has gone wrong or right in all these years which is now forcing us to debate once again what has gone wrong in all these years? PM: Let me say that a lot of things which are not going right, they have their origins outside India. The 2008 financial crisis affected our growth rate. Our growth rate fell from 9% to 6.7% and we recovered in next 2 years but then came the Euro zone crisis and therefore there is a flight of capital from large number of develop-

ing countries. Capital in search of safety wants to go to Germany, wants to go to the United States and therefore all developing countries, including China, are experiencing a deceleration of growth rates. Having said that let me say that there have been problems in our own country. We have to work harder than ever before in restoring fiscal balance. We have to work systematically to ensure that the balance of payment problem is managed properly and the climate for foreign investment, both direct and portfolio is also favourably motivated. QUESTIon: To keep UPA united and intact, would you request Mamta Bannerjee to reconsider her decision on supporting Presidential candidature and would you appeal to BJP to withdraw their candidate for the Presidential post? PM: As soon as we decided upon the nomination of Sh. Pranab Mukherjee, I rang up Sh. L.K.Advani ji, I rang up Smt. Sushma Swaraj ji, I rang up Arun Jaitly ji requesting them to work with the Government and the ruling coalition to ensure that Pranab jis election takes place unanimously. As far as the Trinamol Congress is concerned, Trinamol Congress is still part of the UPA and I have still not given up hope that Trinamol Congress will also find its way to support the candidature of Sh. Pranab Mukherjee.

LK Advani slams UPA govt for Pranab

New Delhi: Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) patriarch LK Advani on Monday slammed the Congress-led United Progressive Alliance (UPA) government over its Presidential election candidate Pranab Mukherjee and said it did not create a consensus for the poll. Advani wrote on his latest blog: "In political circles, it is fashionable these days to raise the question: should not an election to this high constitutional office be a unanimous election, based on a consensual agreement arrived at between Government and the Opposition?" "This question is often hurled at us in the BJP as if by deciding to support Sangma sponsored by two eminent Chief Ministers against Congress Pranab Mukherji, we are doing something improper. I hold that the answer to this question depends entirely on the attitude of the ruling party," he said. Advani blogged Indian Prime Minister Manmohan Singh called him immediately after Congress supremo Sonia Gandhi announced the name of Union Finance Minister Pranab Mukherjee as UPA's candidate for the titular post in order to gain the support of the main opposition party of the country. "When within minutes of Soniaji announcing the name of Shri Pranab Mukherjee, the P.M. phoned me to tell me that the UPAs candidate would be Pranab and requested for our support," Advani said. He said: "My comment was: 'You are now only informing us.; would it not have been better if you had consulted the Opposition before making the announcement?' His reaction was: 'Well, it is never too late to mend'."

He said Mukherjee also called him to inform about his nomination but did not ask for 'support'. "Shortly thereafter I received yet another phone call: from Pranab Da (Pranab Mukherjee) himself. He conveyed that he had been nominated. But he did not ask for support," Advani said. "He (Mukherjee) just reminisced about how since 1970 we had been together in Parliament, sharing bonds of mutual esteem and affection," he said. The senior BJP leader said: "For several decades since independence, the Congress Partys vote share in the Electoral college was so overwhelming that I presume that they never even thought of consulting the opposition." "In contrast, when in 2002, the NDA as the ruling coalition thought of putting up Dr. Kalam (APJ Abdul Kalam) as its candidate for Presidentship, Vajpayee spoke to Soniaji and Mulayam Singh and brought them on board to support the NDA candidate," he said. The BJP on June 21 announced former Lok Sabha Speaker PA Sangma as their candidate for the titular post. Pertinently, Advani's blog was published on a day when the Congress Working Committee (CWC), highest decision making body of the party, convened a special meeting to bid a formal farewell to Mukherjee. After the meeting, Mukherjee told reporters: "Today my long association with the Congress Working Committee since 1978 came to an end. I met the Prime Minister. Tomorrow I will be putting in my paper [as finance minister]."

Corporate India is behind Pranab: Sangma

New Delhi: Presidential contest candidate and former Lok Sabha speaker P A Sangma on Sunday took his rival UPA candidate Pranab Mukherjee calling him responsible for the financial mess in the country and held him also responsible for the various scams concerning his department. "Who is responsible individually? Individually the finance minister is responsible for

Mukherjee," said Sangma hinting at a corporate-politician nexus in the elections. Union Finance Minister Pranab Mukherjee, who visited his ancestral home in Birbhum district in West Bengal on Saturday, has once urged all the political groups who are still undecided about whom to support in the presidential poll to back his candidature. He said if needed he would speak to Trin-

the financial condition," said Sangma, who is supported by a part of the National Democratic Alliance (NDA), especially the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP). He also held him responsible for the financial scandals. Sangma, who has been backed by Odisha chief minister Naveen Patnaik of BJD and Tamil Nadu chief minister J Jayalalithaa of AIADMK, said collectively the Prime Minister and his cabinet is responsible for the mess but Pranab Mukherjee as finance minister is individually responsible for the situation. "The entire corporate world is with Pranab

amool Congress chief Mamata Banerjee again. Mukherjee also visited Belur Math, the Headquarters Ramakrishna Math & Ramakrishna Mission, in Howrah and prayed there besides meeting the monks. Mukherjee earlier said: "There are many parties outside UPA which are supporting me. Parties like Forward Bloc, CPI-M, JD (U) and Shiv Sena are supporting me." "I am urging those who have not made up their mind yet to support me as the UPA candidate," said Mukherjee. The Presidential election is scheduled to take place on July 19.

New Delhi: The Reserve Bank of India (RBI) in consultation with the Government of India on Monday announced certain measures to check the slide of the currency and also boost the economy. The RBI enhanced the limit for investment by Securities and Exchange Board of India (SEBI) registered foreign institutional investors (FIIs) in Government securities (G-Secs) by a further amount of USD 5 billion. The existing limit for investment by Securities and Exchange Board of India (SEBI) registered foreign institutional investors (FIIs) in Government securities (G-Secs) has been enhanced by a further amount of USD 5 billion, read a statement issued by the RBI. This would take the overall limit for FII investment in G-Secs from USD 15 billion to USD 20 billion, it said. In order to broad base the non-resident investor base for G-Secs, it has also been decided to allow long term investors like Sovereign Wealth Funds (SWFs), multilateral agencies, endowment funds, insurance funds, pension funds and foreign central banks to be registered with SEBI, to also invest in G-Secs for the entire limit of USD 20 billion, the statement said. The RBI said the sub-limit of USD 10 billion (existing USD 5 billion with residual maturity of 5 years and additional limit of USD 5 billion) would have the residual maturity of three years. The terms and conditions for the scheme for FII investment in infrastructure debt and the scheme for non-resident investment in Infrastructure Development Funds (IDFs) have

been further rationalised in terms of lock-in period and residual maturity, the statement said. The RBI said Qualified Foreign Investors (QFIs) could now invest in those mutual fund (MF) schemes that hold at least 25 per cent of their assets (either in debt or in equity or both) in infrastructure sector under the current USD 3 billion sub-limit for investment in mutual funds related to infrastructure. However, the measures announced by the RBI was not successful in giving a boost to the market as the Sensex lost nearly 90 points at the ending sessions on Monday. The BSE Sensex dropped by 90.35 pointsto stand at 16,882.16. NSE Nifty moved down by 31.4 points to stand at 5,114.65. Union Finance Minister Pranab Mukherjee on Saturday had said the government will announce steps on Monday to counter the slide of the rupee, a day after the rupee hit a new record low against the dollar. Speaking to reporters in Kolkata, Mukherjee had said along with the steps which the government has taken, shortly the Governor of Reserve Bank of India, with whom the Secretary, Department of Economic Affairs, had consultation, would announce measures. "We will be able to take certain measures which will be announced on Monday, which will improve the market condition," he said. Market sentiment in India has been downbeat on the back of one worrying sign after the other as growth rates continued to slide, inflation surged and financial institutions forecast difficult times for Asias third largest economy. New Delhi: Janata Dal (United) supremo Sharad Yadav said last weekend there was no rift within the National Democratic Alliance (NDA) and that it would remain united. His remarks came at a time when the JD(U) leaders and the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) exchanged barbs over numerous issues. The JD(U) on June 21 announced it will support United Progressive Alliance (UPA) candidate Pranab Mukherjee in the Presidential election while the BJP said it will back former Lok Sabha Speaker PA Sangma for the titular post. "The support of the JD(U) to UPA presidential candidate Pranab Mukherjee is no indication of any rift in the NDA. It is united and will remain so," Yadav told reporters. To avoid miscommunication, Yadav said he will ask his partymen to make comments only after speaking to him. "I will like to tell them (party leaders) not to make comments on any issue without asking me. If the matter is about Bihar, then leaders should only comment after asking Nitish Kumar," Yadav said. Pertinently, the JD(U) is a key ally of the BJP led NDA. JD(U) leader Shivanand Tiwari earlier said that the BJP should think again over its stand on supporting Sangma. He said that the economic condition of the country would not have been 'different' even if senior BJP leader Ravi Shankar Prasad was the Finance Minister of the nation. Bihar Chief Minister and JD(U) leader Nitish Kumar earlier this week slammed Gujarat Chief Minister and BJP leader Narendra Modi and said he did not perform 'Raj Dharma' during the riots in Gujarat in 2002. Kumar said Modi 'mishandled' the Gujarat

riots and that resulted in the loss of the National Democratic Alliance (NDA) in Lok Sabha polls in 2004. "Modi's mishandling of Gujarat riots made NDA lose its power in 2004," said Kumar. He said former Indian Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee was not happy with Modi and the manner in which he handled the Gujarat riots. He said Vajpayee wanted to remove Modi from the Chief Minister's post after the riots. Kumar on June 19 created a new embarrassment for the BJP as he said the BJP must name their Prime Ministerial candidate for 2014. His move seemed to be aimed at the growing influence of Modi with whom he exchanged several barbs in the past. In an interview to The Economic Times, Kumar said the voters must know who the BJP is selecting in the general elections in 2014 as the PM candidate. "The leader of the coalition should have secular credentials and liberal frame of mind," he said, reminding of Modi's image after the 2002 Gujarati riots in which the Muslims were killed. "It should be someone who has absolute faith in democratic values. In a multi-religious and multi-lingual country like ours, the leader should not have rough edges in his personality," he told the financial daily. Kumar and Modi have exchanged barbs over numerous issues in recent times. Kumar on June 11 criticised Modi for saying that caste-based politics has ruined Bihar and said he should first look into the condition of his own state. "Bihar was an excellent state but caste politics destroyed it," Modi had earlier said.

Freedom is not given, it is taken. - Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose

The future is in good hands

Judging by the antics of some of our youth today, we sometimes feel that the future of our society is heading for the dumps. Often parents can be heard of complaining of their teenagers or young adults taking the wrong decisions in life and ending up in dire straits. But the story of one Kiwi Indian, featured in this newspaper on page 7, is an inspiring one and gives credibility to the thought that the future of the society is in good hands. DJ Areeb, an Auckland systems network engineer by day and DJ by night this focused young man has a good head on his shoulders and his story is sure to inspire others who dream of pursuing their hobbies to greater heights. While letting his systems engineer work pay his bills, DJ Areeb donates all proceeds from his deejaying efforts to charity. How often do you hear of one parting with their income for the benefit of others? I live my project engineer life separately, full time and this is still a hobby, Areeb told the Indian Weekender recently. I have never charged for deejaying. Whatever money I get from deejaying I give it to charity. Because I earn my living as a project engineer, that pays my bills. My whole idea was to start a charity organisation and thats what I do with the money I get from deejaying. I dont and never have put a price on myself. Prime Minister John Key, a self-made wealthy man, also reportedly donates part of his salary to charity. While some never tire in their efforts to run after money, DJ Areebs inspirational efforts towards those less fortunate has been like a breath of fresh air. And credit should also go to his parents and elders for a fine upbringing. And he has a motivating message for others, too: So I would like to tell all the young people that get your qualifications first, become successful in your profession and then pursue your hobby, because having a hobby is an excellent thing as long as you are sorted professionally. As well known English author and philosopher Sir Thomas Browne (1605-1682) once said: Be charitable before wealth makes thee covetous. With young men like DJ Areeb leading the way in the community, we can safely assume the future of our society, and the country, is indeed in good hands. Arvind Kumar

Two spiritual leaders who spread Hinduism in the West

PAdmINI GAUNdeR
A.C, Bhakthivedanta Prabhupada, the founder of the ISKCON (The International Society for Krishna Consciousness) and Sivaya Subrahmunia Swami who established the Saiva Siddhanta Church are two Hindu leaders, after Swami Vivekananda, who did a lot to propagate Hinduism, especially in America. They were very different from each other but similar in the work they did. Prabhupada was born in Bengal and went to America later while Sivaya Subrahmuniya Swami was an American born in California who went to Sri Lanka at an early age and became a Hindu. Prabhupada renounced worldly life in 1959 after leaving his sons in charge of family and business affairs. In 1965, at the age of 69, he got a free passage to America in an Indian freighter. He first went to New York. After establishing centres in America he sent hia devotees to London where the Beatles came into contact with them. George Harrison, in particular, became interested and became a Hare Krishna devotee and remained one till the end. Prabhupada emphasised chanting the name of Krishna and publishing books on Lord Krishna and His life. The followers of ISKCON, better known as the Hare Krishna Movement, have given out millions of copies of Bhagavad Gita throughout the world. To propagate the movement the devotees go through the streets of major cities, chanting Hare Krishna and dancing. (They are also seen in Auckland sometimes.) They also distribute prasad (vegetarian food which is offered to the deity during prayers) from time to time in city centres and places like the universities. Moreover, they also have a free feast for everyone who goes to their temples on Sundays and takes part in their worship. In Fiji, the Punja family, especially Deoji Punja, became a devotee of Prabhupada. The Punjas were behind his visit to Fiji and the establishment of the first Hare Krishna tural land was purchased at Riverhead, a rural district north-west of Auckland city. Slowly the Sri Sri Radha Giridhari temple was built which was opened in January 2004 and the deities which had been installed by Srila Prabhupada himself were brought to their new home. With the temple as the focal point, now there is a farming community there and wherever they are there are Hare Krishna restaurants which serve only pure vegetarian food. They also do not use garlic or onions. Unlike the work of the devotees of Hare Krishna the work of the followers of Sivaya Subrahmuniya Swami (Gurudeva as he was affectionately known among his followers) is not so open and visible. Sivaya Subrahmuniya Swami took tries to inform and inspire Hindus worldwide and people interested in Hinduism; and at the same time it tries to dispel myths, illusions and misinformation about Hinduism. In 2000 a few months before he died he also started Hindu Press International, a daily news service (web based) that highlights anything of interest to Hindus anywhere in the world. Gurudeva was influenced by Swami Vivekanandas teachings. So though he was a devotee of Siva he worked for the propagation of Hinduism without any difference of sect. When in 1985 Gurudeva visited Fiji I met him for the first time. It was an unforgettable experience. He was tall and looked powerful but compassionate and there was spirituality oozing from his calm and gentle face. He came again to Fiji for the opening of the new Siva Subrahmania Temple in Nadi in the early 1990s. In 1986 Gurudeva was honoured in New Delhi as one of the Hindu spiritual leaders who had most dynamically promoted Hinduism outside India. Prabhupada had done a similar thing. While Prabhupada has his growing number of followers who go chanting in public places, distribute Bhagawad Gita and vegetarian food, Gurudeva has his publications which continue to promote Hinduism. Hinduism Today is a unique publication as I do not think there is any other magazine on Hinduism comparable to that anywhere in the world with the aim to cultivate an abiding solidarity among all Hindus without any distinction of nationality or sect.

Srila Prabhupada made his first visit to New Zealand in 1972 and established an ISKCON centre where he installed the deities of Krishna and His consort Radharani, whom he named Sri Sri Radha Giridhari.
as well as the Hare Krishna school, which is a state integrated school that has from Years 1 to 8. Prabhupada continues to live through his books and his temples. Wherever there is a Hare Krishna temple opposite the main shrine, at the other end of the hall, there is an image of Ptabhupada seated on a chair. He had always insisted that he was not God, not even a servant of God, as a servant of God is no ordinary person, but he was trying to be a servant of God. Though he emphasised publishing and chanting, I believe that one of his greatest contributions was also popularising vegetarianism in the west. Today we see Hare Krishna devotees all over the world initiation from Sri Yogaswami of Jaffna, Sri Lanka. After returning to America he established the Saiva Siddhanta Church. He moved to Kauai, a beautiful island in the Hawaii group and started the Kauai Aadheenam (religious establishment). He also built a temple there and called it the Iraivan Kovil (Temple of God). He founded the Himalayan Academy in Kauai. His most important contribution was the establishment of the quarterly magazine, Hinduism Today which he started publishing in January 1979. It highlights anything that is of importance to the Hindus. Its main aim is to foster Hindu solidarity as a unity in diversity among all sects. It also

Srila Prabhupada made his first visit to New Zealand in 1972 and established an ISKCON centre where he installed the deities of Krishna and His consort Radharani, whom he named Sri Sri Radha Giridhari. In 1978 it was decided that a farming community should be developed to demonstrate how Krishna consciousness could be practically applied in the lives of everyone. Lifting student achievement

KANWAlJIT SINGh BAKShI, NATIoNAl mP
Our community, whether in New Zealand or anywhere else in the world, places high value on education. We, like most parents, understand that education is a pillar towards an individuals and their familys success both economically and socially. This National-led Government had based the changes in its recent education policy based on this shared thinking. Our aim is to ensure that we raise the success rates for our kids to five out of five, from the current rate of four out of five. Our policy is based on our aim; we want to ensure that our kids are capable of competing in the 21st century. We want to lift those who are left behind, and encourage those who are doing better to do even better. Our approach to reaching this aim is to invest in quality teaching and professional leadership, as this has the biggest effect on raising student achievement. Keeping in line with our approach, we had decided to invest $60 million in quality teaching initiatives, largely funded by making minor changes to teacher:student funding ratios. This would have saved the country $174 million over four years. However, this Government does not believe in imposing our thinking on New Zealanders. We strongly believe in the democracy we are. It became apparent that the proposed minor adjustments were causing a disproportionate amount of worry for parents. This was never our intention. We listened very closely to concerns of parents and teachers, and have moved to put their minds at rest by reversing this part of our education plan. We will no longer change the teacher:student ratios. This does mean that the Government is no longer in a position to invest $60 million towards quality teaching. We will also have to cover the shortfall of $114 million over the budget forecast period. I assure you that our Government will work through managing this shortfall in a balanced and considered manner, and will still return to surplus by 2014/15. The reversal does not affect the extra $511.19 million that National is investing in to education over the next four. This takes the total Government investment in early childhood education and schooling to a record $9.6 billion for 2012/13. We remain committed to lifting student achievement through raising teaching quality. Our focus is on working with education sector organisations to address quality issues. We want to identify who is delivering successful teaching practice and make that common practice, to ultimately lift student achievement. By raising achievement we can help ensure all children have the opportunity to succeed and make the most of their lives.

Coral Triangle Fishers Forum: Stop Big guns on show as Fiji illegal fishing through traceability hosts Oceania Womens
The importance of implementing seafood traceability as a measure for combating Illegal, Unreported and Unregulated (IUU) fishing was emphasised at the opening of the second Coral Triangle Fishers Forum practices. Therefore seafood traceability from the catcher to the plate is essential to eliminate IUU practices, Holden added. IUU preys on millions of tons of fish stocks within the Coral Trikeep it that way, Natuva said. WWF South Pacific Programme Representative Kesaia Tabunakawai said nations of the region need to acknowledge that their fisheries are a finite resource that needs sustainable management for everyones sake. Traceability under a catch documentation scheme is a useful tool in identifying legally and sustainablycaught fish from others, Ms. Tabunakawai said. I am a Pacific islander and live surrounded by the sea. I grew up in an oceanic environment and was brought up with an appreciation for the offerings of the sea especially for our daily sustenance. My work has allowed me to appreciate even more the bounties of the sea in providing food, employment and the bedrock of many economies. No doubt we must treat conservation and management with a sense of urgency and recognise that we are dealing with a finite resource that requires regional and joint actions to ensure its long term security, shared Tabunakawai. The Coral Triangle the nursery of the seas is the worlds centre of marine life, encompassing around 6 million sq km of ocean across six countries in Asia-Pacific Indonesia, Malaysia, Papua New Guinea, Philippines, Solomon Islands, and Timor-Leste. It is home to 76% of the worlds known coral species, 37% of the worlds coral reef fish species, and commercially-valuable species such as tuna, whales, dolphins, rays, sharks, including 6 of the worlds 7 known species of marine turtles.

Marine Stewardship Council Pacific Fisheries Manager Bill Holden said the Asia-Pacific region must work to remove the market for IUU products and this could be achieved by tracing the source of the fish. The ultimate deterrence to stop fishers engaging in IUU practices is if they have no markets to sell their catch to, Mr Holden said. However there are always temptations and grey areas that cause some to turn a blind eye to certain

Friends of Fiji Health (FOFH) steps up another gear with its latest health mission to Fiji which left Auckland June 22. FOFH has, through generous contributions from Gilles Avenue Hospital in Auckland and other donors installed a laparoscopic tower at Lautoka Hospital and this mission will be training local doctors in advanced methods of laparoscopic surgery. This is step change for Fijis medical system as less invasive surgical methods will now be readily available to local surgeons through the most up-to-date technology said Dr Pillay. I am very pleased for the people of Fiji and excited that this has been made possible through FOFH, Dr Pillay said. Dr Pillay will be working with Dr Rajendra Kumar an experience specialist in Obstetrics and Gynaecology from Waitemata Health. It has always been the vision of

mission takes a giant step towards achieving that goal. We are working in partnership with the Obstetrics and Gynaecology Department at Lautoka Hospital, and the Medical School through the Fiji National University. We will be conducting teaching sessions at the University and practical sessions at

Lautoka Hospital where we have installed the laparoscopic tower, Dr Pillay said. The second addition to this mission is a team that will be based in Labasa (Vanua Levu) for the first time. Two surgeons, Dr Ravindra Raj and Dr Shiu Kumar, will be providing respite for local doctors as well as scoping future missions to that region. I am particularly thankful for the contributions we receive from several suppliers including Johnson and Johnson, 3M, Olympus and Big Green Medical Supplies who will also send an expert to Fiji, Dr Pillay said. FOFH funds its missions through fund raising activities and for every dollar raised it provides eighteen dollars worth of medical services in Fiji. The team will assemble at Auckland International Airport at 10 am on Friday and will leave on the 1 pm flight arriving in Nadi at 4 pm. They will be available to the media.

New passports arrive, finally

SOME members of the public who had applied for a new passport since August last year received the unique book on Tuesday. More than 200 people queued up at Immigration Department in Suva as early as 6am excited to receive their passports. People came from as far as Wainibuka in Tailevu and Namosi to collect their passport books. However, it was a disappointment to some who did not check on the dates on which their passports will be issued. Immigration director, Major Nemani Vuniwaqa said close to 1000 passports were issued. He reiterated it was important that members of the public checked on the dates to avoid any disappointment. He said the department had a list of dates when people could collect their passports. People are advised to check the dailies for these lists before going down to the immigration office to collect their passport books to avoid disappointment.

The cost of a new passport will increase soon, Immigration director Major Vuniwaqa said Tuesday. The present cost of processing a new passport is F$76 but Major Vuniwaqa did not say how much it would cost to apply for a new passport. The Immigration Department made a proposal of the new price to Defence Minister Joketani Cokanasiga earlier this year. Major Vuniwaqa said they were only waiting for the right time to implement the new price as they have deprived members of the public for a long time. He said there would be no room for fraudulent activities with the new features included in the new passports.
From left: Bevan Reagan (technician from OptiMed NZ), Dr Roger Dethlefs (ophthalmologist), Dr Gary Phelps (RANZCO Teaching ophthalmologist) and Dr Biu Sikivou (Ophthalmologist in-charge of the Diabetes Eye Clinic).

New documents to cost more

"People may try if they want, but we have securities and special features that will detect them," he said "We have decided a new price but we implement it when the time is right," Major Vuniwaqa said. He said the cause of delay by Oberthur Technologies in France was because of the special and unique paper used to make the new booklet. "This paper has never been used by any other country except Fiji," Major Vuniwaqa said. Major Vuniwaqa said the new price should meet the quality and validity of the new passports. The department had ordered about 76,000 passports that will be enough for two years.

The Diabetes Eye Clinic in Suva opened last week, representing a significant milestone in increasing local capacity for the management of patients with diabetic retinopathy as a part of the standard diabetic health check. This will facilitate the opportunity for early detection, patient education and follow-up of diabetic retinopathy, a leading cause of blindness in the Pacific Island region. Recent population based data shows that 27.2 per cent of known diabetics and 4.2 per cent of newly diagnosed diabetics in Fiji have retinopathy. Good management of diabetes and hypertension significantly reduces the risk for diabetic retinopathy. Furthermore, early detection and treatment of established retinopathy can greatly reduce the risk for visual loss. We need to screen all diabetics in order to catch the retinopathy really early, and educate them, said Dr Biu Sikivou, ophthalmologist in-charge of the Clinic. The Royal Australian and New Zealand College of Ophthalmologists (RANZCO) partners with the Pacific Eye Institute and The Fred Hollows Foundation NZ to support the Diabetes Eye Clinic. The Pacific Eye Institute trains ophthalmologists and ophthalmic nurses for the Pacific region.

Diabetes, and its eye complications, is a huge regional problem. Screening and treating diabetic retinopathy requires highly organized health-care systems, well-trained personnel and sophisticated equipment. The RANZCO involvement is funded by AusAID through the International Agency for the Prevention of Blindness and the Vision2020 Global Consortium. Through co-ordinated RANZCO Fellow sub-specialty teaching visits, and the RANZCO teaching ophthalmologist based in Suva, Dr Gary Phelps, RANZCO is helping to support the clinical capacity building of Pacific Eye Institute ophthalmologists and trainees. Professional standards are enhanced, benefiting the wider Pacific Islands region. The collaboration also includes the provision of diagnostic and therapeutic equipment, in particular tripling the number of lasers for the treatment of diabetic retinopathy. The old clinic only had the capacity to manage one-fifth of the estimated diabetics requiring treatment. There is now increased capacity which should go some way to address the backlog of patients, said RANZCO ophthalmologist Neil Murray.

Is the Panchatantra just the bed time stories?

RAm lINGAm
If you are from India, you are more likely to know at least one story from the Panchatantra. Many feel that the 2300 year old Panchatantra is a story book for little children. However a careful look at it beyond the narrative tells us a different story. If looked at closely, the Panchatantra could well be classified as a creative teaching methodology. The Panchatantra could easily be termed an approach that validates as a practical and fun way of life coaching for all age groups. The Panchatantra, originally written in Sanskrit, remains as one of the most influential contribution to world literature. It has also been the most frequently translated literary product of India. The Panchatantra has over 200 versions in more than 50 languages. Literary critics have even noted a strong similarity between the Panchatantra and Aesops fables and that the Aesop fables has stories from the Panchatantra. Commenting on the impact of the Panchatantra on the world, Sir William Wilson Hunter , an early Indologist writes: The fables of animals, familiar to the Western world from the time of Aesop downwards, had their original home in IndiaPanchatantra was translated into the ancient Persian in the 6th century A.D. from that rendering all the subsequent versions in Asia Minor and Europe have been derived. The most ancient animal fables of India are at the present day the nursery stories of England and America. This graceful Hindu imagination delighted also in fairy tales, and the Sanskrit compositions of this class are the original source of many of the fairy stories of Persia, Arabia and Christendom. Franklin Edgerton a translator of the Panchatantra in 1924 said As early as the eleventh century this work reached Europe, and before 1600 it existed in Greek, Latin, Spanish, Italian, German, English, Old Slavonic, Czech, and styled, re-branded and animated in a new avatar in the USA or Japan, we celebrate. According to the Panchatantra itself, Amarashakti the King of Mahilaropya (perhaps in southern India) was concerned about the governing capabilities of his three princes. Apparently the three princes were not interested in learning and after a suggestion made by his minister, Shaastra which teaches us, how to relate to and understand people, reliable friendships, problem solving through tact and wisdom and how to live in peace and harmony in the face of the many pitfalls in life. Interesting methodology of the Panchatantra It is very interesting to note that Panchatantra is a clever piece of story telling but with a difference and reveals the creative storytelling powers of the author. Panchatantra is not about the five sets of stories but about five tantras or principles. The garland of stories completes one tantra. Each tantra starts with a main story with other stories inside the story. The characters in a story tell other stories, based on different situations or contexts. The narrative seems suitable to children but the underlying theme can be key knowledge for grownups. The author uses a modern day case study method to make a point and validates the teachings with a practical tip to apply in life. How the Panchatantra transcends time and culture As the story characters are mostly animals, many mistake these for pre-school nursery stories or fables. This is a gross misconception. It was the genius of Pundit Vishnu Sharma that the stories using manly animals are created without any cultural bias because animals are animals in any culture. The Panchatantra can change our perspectives on the many daily challenges that we face in life. The stories relate to everyday life situations and show a moral and realistic approach to successful living. The learning is always close to what a person will face in day-to-day life. Even though the book was written more than two thousand years ago the ideas and wisdom expressed transcend time and culture because it teaches us how to be wiser, how to recognize frauds and cheating, how to make friends and how to live life using our intelligence. Many things to many people All in all, the Panchatantra can be many things to many people a fun reading for adults, gift for young or old friends, education on ethics, practical approach to life, creative teaching methodology and of course an excellent story book. There are also a good number of kindle versions of the Panchatantra these days and quite cheap as well. The Panchatantra are designed as bed time stories but daytime constructs of wisdom where life is understood by constructing meaning and intellectual stimulation. The Panchatantra is one such shining jewel from ancient India that has stood the test of time and that provides life coaching and mentoring to everybody be it kids or even adults. Lets not dismiss the Panchatantra as a set of animal stories only for children. In fact, Panchatantra is Neeti-Shaastra. Ram Lingam blogs his insights on India and Indian culture at www.indiasutra.co.nz

perhaps other Slavonic languages. Its range has extended from Java to Iceland. In France, at least eleven Panchatantra tales are included in the work of La Fontaine . Misconceptions about Panchatantra When we hear about Indias cultural assets and literary products such as the Panchatantra we tend to dismiss it as old and irrelevant to modern times. We think that the Panchatantra is a story book after all. We hastily declare that it is just a childrens book of fables with animal stories that has morals. We hardly make an effort to go through the source book to know the real purpose of the core script nor do we bother to find out what the author says in his introduction. It is quite sad when the same sets of Indian stories gets published completely re-

the King decided to engage a wise Pundit Vishnu Sharma for awakening or igniting their intelligence of his princes. And it so happened that the Princes became wiser. So, what is the main theme of the Panchatantra? About the Panchatantra, here is what the author Pundit Vishnu Sharma says, A man who has studied this Neeti Shaastra or listened to its principles will never be defeated not even by Indra the lord of the Heaven. The main theme of the Panchatantra is Neeti which is hard to translate in English. Neeti roughly means practical worldly conduct or even a wise conduct of life. That makes the Panchatantra connected with one of the branches of ancient Indian science known as the Neeti-

A culture is developed only when a group of people living in a certain geographical area follow a set of common practices and values to be in harmony with each other. A nation has a particular culture, a society has a culture, our workplace has a culture and nay the effect of culture is seen even at an individual level. We can easily distinguish the cultured from the uncultured at a bus queue for example, where one patiently waits for their turn to board the bus whereas the other breaks the line and barges in disrespectfully. Samskriti (Culture in Sanskrit), means that which is purified or that which purifies! The values and practices of a culture are meant to purify ones mind and improve their thinking so that they can lead a healthy life of joy, growth and harmony. Hence, a culture has many aspects which are meant to purify both the individual and the society. The first two aspects are reflected in the social living, whilst the last two intimately affects the individual and makes them stronger from within. A culture can be defined based on its purpose into 4 main aspects: i. Customs & Practices ii. Traditions iii. Values and; iv. Philosophy

Aamir Khan meets parliamentary panel

Mumbai: Bollywood star Aamir Khan last week met a parliamentary panel to discuss medical problems plaguing India, highlighted in episodes of his new television show Satyameva Jayate. Khan, along with members of his Satyamev Jayate team, attended the meeting to which he was invited by Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) Rajya Sabha MP Shanta Kumar who heads the Parliamentary Standing Committee on Commerce. The 47-year-old actor, who is known for taking social causes to the masses successfully through his films, is expected to discuss issues like doctors taking monetary cuts and other unethical medical practices spotlighted on an episode of his debut TV show. After his show broadcast episodes on female foeticide and medical wrongdoings, the Maharashtra Medical Council (MMC) temporarily suspended the registration of 13 doctors in the state who were charged of revealing the sex of foetus. The council decided to suspend the doctors from various corners of Maharashtra including Beed, Jalagaon, Pune and Osmanabad by taking into consideration various provisions of the MMC Act and the Pre-Conception And Pre-Natal Diagnostic Techniques Act (PCPNDT). In another success story for the show, the Maharashtra government has planned to open medical stores across the state that will have adequate amounts of generic medicines available for patients. The government said measures would be taken to make generic medicines available in all government-run hospitals in Maharashtra. Khans show also attracted controversy after it was criticised by certain section of medical practitioners and the Indian Medical Association (IMA) demanded an apology for what they termed as sending wrong message about the medical community in his programme. The episode about medical wrongdoing on Star TV network angered the doctors who said Khan sent all the wrong messages and undermined the doctor-patient relationship. "Satyamev Jayate is a good programme, but Aamir Khan in the last episode presented doctors in a totally wrong way. He should have invited the doctors against whom allegations were brought concerned or the representatives of the medical association for a balanced picture," Dr DR Rai, secretary, Indian Medical Association, said. The theme of that particular episode showed that while people trust medical practitioners, believing that they are equipped with the knowledge and skills to safeguard their health, this knowledge is misused to exploit this trust and medical care becomes a nightmare. "The profession is riddled with unscrupulous doctors and hospitals out to make big bucks at the cost of patients, but there are still medical p r a c t it io ners who stand up for the Hippocratic Oath, and those who want to clean up the profession," according to the summary of the show that Khan presented on May 27.

I learn about gadgets from Arbaaz

Malaika Arora Khan is not a tech savvy person but doesnt mind learning about them from husband Arbaaz Khan . SREyA catches up with the gorgeous Bollywood item girl as she launched Taiwan Excellence Campaign 2012 in Mumbai
So how do you learn about gadgets? Whatever I have to learn about gadgets, I learn from my husband (a c t o r- d i r e c t o r Arbaaz Khan). He is very, very technology savvy and keeps me updating with the latest. What Taiwanese products will you choose for your two famous item girl avatars-Munni (from Dabangg) and Anarkali (from Housefull 2)? If I have to think from the perspective of Munni I would have gone for cool Taiwanese headphones they look quite interesting. As Anarkali I would use Taiwanese external hard drive so that she can get music for her disco. How is that one aspect in your life which you can never let go? I am quite a travel bug. I love to travel. I am very adventurous whether its in terms of adventure sports, travel, bag-packing, trainswhatever it takes to enjoy a place, I am absolutely open to that. Every time I go to a new place, I try something different whether it is skydiving, Bungee JumpingI make sure whenever I travel to a new place, I learn something. I believe the experience and knowledge you can gather by travelling, no book can offer you that. Do you prefer an all girls trip or travel shouldnt be gender-centric? It is essential to travel either as a part of an all girls trip or an all boys trip. That way you explore and enjoy far more. Have you been to Darjeeling in North Bengal? Unfortunately, I have never been to Darjeeling though I love Darjeeling tea. If I get a chance, I will surely visit the hill-station. What do you have to say about people who every other day file a petition in a court if they find anything objectionable in a song or a film? I would like to keep it very simple - if you dont like a particular film or song, dont watch or listen it. Whenever there is an item number in a film, people expects you to do it Thats a question everyone asks me but I dont have an answer to that. Every time somebody has a song in a film or a guest appearance, people ask me why I am not in it. But its not physically possible for me to be seen in every item song. Somebody asked me why I am not in song (Character Dheela) in Ready (2011 film starring brother-in-law Salman Khan) since it was such a good one. But I cant possibly be part of everything. When I find it necessary for me to be a part of something or viceversa, things definitely work out. Whats your take on the Pregnancy Clause in Bollywood which says actresses shouldnt get pregnant while they are working on a particular project? I dont know how much these clauses are going to work and what will come out of it. Its understanding that matters. I remember, I was with MTV when I was pregnant and I had a great work relationship. When I got to know about my pregnancy, I informed them and they were very gracious about it and let me take my necessary break and even gave me the option to come back to work if I want. Pregnancy is something which just happens, you cant say Three months from now and I will be pregnant. At the end of the day, its about how much professional you are. You should have the presence of mind to inform people you are working with and they will understand.

Are you a tech-savvy person? I dont believe I am technology savvy, but I decided to launch Taiwan Excellence Campaign because it is a great opportunity to get involved with so many different brands. Life is always a learning process and you are never too young or old to learn something.

Dance is impossible without

Actor Madhuri Dixit is busy judging the fifth season of celebrity dance reality show Jhalak Dikhhla Jaa along with filmmaker Karan Johar and choreographer Remo DSouza. TWF correspondent Sreya Basu catches up with the dance diva of Bollywood in Mumbai
What are you looking at while judging Jhalak Dikhhla Jaa 5? Grace, expressions, how they project themselves and how much they enjoy. I think these are the few criteria that I look for when I see a performance. Dance is impossible without adas. Your promos already ensure TRP even before the show went on air (on June 16) Thank you. I have spent so many years in this industry...the factors that remained constant through eras are singing and dancing. We got such great dancers across the eras that we decided to pick one from each era and recreate them since the show is all about dancing. From Meena Kumari to Kolaveri Di, how did you prepare yourself for the performances? All I did was to think about the heroines of that particular era and their style of dancing and just recreated that. Which one of all promos is your favourite? The one featuring Motiyon ki ladi hoon main (Loafer, 1973) for sure. I had never done such style of dancing before and I enjoyed it very much. We heard you are a good cook. From where did you learn it? From cookery books, mostly of Sanjeev Kapoor (celebrity chef). I dont know about others, but my kids (Arin and Ryan) and husband (Dr. Sriram Madhav Nene) love my cooking. Were you always inclined towards cooking? No. Cooking was challenging for me because until I got married, I didnt use to enter kitchen too muchI used to keep busy with shooting. When we moved to the United States after marriage, I was on my own and there were lots of experiments, as in, something got burnt, something got exploded. Cooking has always been a challenge and I love challenges. What is your husbands favourite dish? My husband loves North Indian food very much...chicken tikka masala, nun and everything. Madame Tussauds London gallery now boasts of your wax statue. How did it feel while you unveiled the statue (in March) ? The first thing I thought when I looked at the statue for the first time was Had I had a twin sister, she would have exactly like this. Its very flattering and I am honoured. You know, something like this is for posteritythe legacy I will leave behind. I am thankful to all my fans who have supported me through all these years. You are famous for your smile so much so that you have been roped in for Oral B Smile India Movement as the chief smile officer. Whats the secret of your smile? (Laughs) There is no secret but happiness. Also its that I am confident and have good teeth and take care of them. So now that you are a chief smile officer, what tips would you give to our cavity-prone nation? Brush your teeth twice a day for two minutes and visit your dentist every six months. Thats all I would say. You are considered an inspiration by todays actresses including Vidya Balan and Katrina Kaif. What do you have to say about that? I dont know. I have always worked hard and believed in whatever I have done. It feels wonderful to be recognized and liked by them.

Mumbai: Bollywood's first superstar Rajesh Khanna, 69, was admitted to Mumbai's Lilavati Hospital on Saturday, June 23, after his health suffered setbacks. His manager Ashwin on June 21 said Khanna has stopped taking food for three-four days. "Rajeshji is unwell. He is not even being able to eat anything since the last three-four days," Ashwin told reporters. However, Khanna's son-in-law and Bollywood actor Akshay Kumar later Tweeted, saying his father-in-law was doing fine now and on the road to recovery. "All those spreading rumours, a humble request, get your facts right before reporting. And for those genuinely concerned and inquiring about my father in-law's health, he is doing fine now and on the road to recovery. Thank you for your good wishes," Akshay posted on his Twitter page. Khanna on June 21 waved at his fans, who had gathered outside his Mumbai bungalow 'Aashirwad', from his balcony. He also showed them 'victory' sign to clarify that he was fine. Shahid, Deepika to pair up for Karan? Aishwarya finds motherhood a 'bliss'
Aishwarya Rai Bachchan is surely enjoying her motherhood and says it's bliss to be a mom. "Being a mum, I love it. It is like bliss," Aishwarya told media.Asked if she is readying for a comeback in Bollywood, the actor said: "We will see as things go. Right now, it (motherhood) is blissful." Abhishek said he feels guilty for not being able to spend time with his baby. "I am guilty. I don't spend enough time with the baby to change her nappies. She (Aishwarya) does all the hardwork," The Bachchan couple tied the nuptial knot in 2007. Aishwarya gave birth to a girl, later named Aaradhya, in November last year. Shahid Kapoor and Deepika Padukone will reportedly share screen space in a Karan Johan film soon. Hema Malini has been busy these days preparing for her daughter Esha Deols marriage scheduled for today, June 29. SREyA BASU catches up with the original Dreamgirl of Bollywood as she was seen promoting Just Chill Summer Camp 2012 in Mumbai
How is the preparation for Eshas marriage going on? Its going on pretty wellvery well. What have you shopped for yourself for the marriage? You are asking very personal questions now. With lifetime awards being given away to senior actors at every award function, how much value would you add to them? You are right. Lifetime achievement awards are something which everyone keeps getting every other day. We have crossed that stage in terms of age. So kahi bhi kisi bhi award function mein who mil jata hai. Its a happy thing for usthey give the award and we take it. But life is a long process to keep on learning every minute. Why is that you are against heroines doing item numbers? Top actresses must never do item songs thats what I think. There are other girls who are meant for those songsthey have practiced for thatthey have conditioned their bodies and everything for that kind of item. So, I feel, it does not look very comfortable to see heroines doing item numbers which the other girls should do. While you ended your Rajya Sabha term, your friend Rekha has been joined the Upper House of the Parliament as a MP. Did you give her any tips? There is no need to give her any tips. She will learn on her own like I did. Nobody teaches you everything in life you have to learn on your own. Presidential election is scheduled for July 19. Who would you like to see as the next President of India? Its better if we get someone non-political. Of course, he has to be a highly qualified person. The Presidents position is too high and we need someone non-political to handle it, who will understand everything and yet not from any particular political party. Why are you promoting a summer camp of all things? Summer vacation is a time for extra-curricular activities. The kind of activities Just Chill Summer Camp is offering is really good. Now-a-days kids world is very competitive. They have to study too much. The children take a lot of stress; even the parents put a lot of stress on them. But if mind gets diverted to outdoor activities, games and health, then the concentration level in studies increases. Name a film of yours which is still preferred by todays kids. Sholay is a very popular film. Even today kids want to do an act out of that. What tips would you like to give to all kids in the rat race? The kids should understand the body is a very beautiful creation of God a gift from God, and that they should preserve it very nicely. According to Shastras (scriptures of Hinduism), there are many Gods and Goddesses inside our body. You dont have to search outside. Parents should make kids understand that God is inside them and teach them little meditation. Meditation will help them concentrate in their studies also. Music and dance also help a lot. When my children (Esha and Ahana) were studying, there was a time when they were doing very poor in mathematics (like many children). Then I put them to dancing and said, You have to learn it. When you dance, it requires a lot on concentrationthere is a need for coordination of hands, eyes, expression, legs, in fact the whole body. And their concentration power automatically improved.

WELLNESS by HOMOEOPATHy

Dr. (Mrs.) Pushpinder

Asthma is a chronic inflammation of the bronchial tubes (airways) that causes swelling and narrowing (constriction) of the airways. The result is difficulty in breathing. Asthma prone people have sensitive air tubes that react to allergies causing cough, wheezing and tightness in the chest. Severity of asthma may range from minor wheezing to life-threatening attacks. Long term medication is generally needed to control the disease and prevent the repeated attacks. Causes of Asthma Common reason is the combination of genetic tendency and exposure to allergens / irritants. Some common allergens are : l Pollen and moulds l House dust mites l Air pollution l Pet dander l Tobacco smoke l Chemical irritants l Perfumes other factors that can trigger an asthmatic attack are: l Intense emotions like anger & fear. l Physical exercise l Certain drugs / medication taken over a period of time. l Viral infections l Certain foods l Changes in weather l Hormonal changes as in pregnancy, menopause, thyroid disorders, etc. l Gastro-oesophageal reflux disease (GERD) l Heredity l Symptoms of Asthma The main symptom of difficult breathing could be accompanied with: l Breathlessness / dyspnoea l Cough- mostly dry l Wheeze-whistling when exhaling l Chest tightness l Difficulty in lying down l Restless sleep, tired feeling on waking l Tightening of neck muscles l Difficulty in talking l Excessive sweating (especially during an acute asthma attack) Diagnosis of Asthma Once your doctor has taken your history and examined you he will be fairly sure of the diagnosis. However, he may confirm it with some tests like: l Spirometry (Lung function tests) l Peak flow rate l X-ray chest. l Living with Asthma

Here are some tips for effective management of asthma: l Drink plenty of water to loosen the secretions l Avoid exposure to allergens / irritants l Avoid a sedentary life and start exercising as it helps to improve the lung function. l Learn stress management techniques l Green tea which contains antioxidants may give some relief in asthma symptoms l Many improve after including ginger in their diet l Stop smoking Homeopathic Treatment The treatment period may vary from case to case as it depends on certain factors such as age, duration of the illness, frequency and severity of complaints, medication taken in the past, etc. Presence of other systemic illnesses in the patient may prolong the duration of treatment. Reduced frequency and severity of attacks, shorter duration of the attacks, improved immunity / resistance and lesser fatigue after the attack are experienced as the main benefits of Homeopathic treatment. In Homeopathy the remedies may vary from person to person depending on the cause, duration, family & occupational history, food & seasonal allergies, previous treatment taken, mental & physical condition, etc. As assessed from a detailed history of the case. Myths and Facts Myth I have asthma only when I have trouble in breathing and the rest of the time I am free from asthma. Fact- It is important to understand that asthma has episodes of acute attack during which symptoms of breathlessness, cough and wheezing are seen. In between those attacks, the body still retains its asthmatic tendencies though they are not expressed outwardly. To provide effective long term control of the disease it is important to take medicines in between the attacks. Since the 1970s, yoga and meditation has been studied as possible treatments for stress-reduction, depression and anxiety. Yoga, originating in ancient India, can vary from gentle and accommodating to strenuous and challenging. The literal translation of the Sanskrit word yoga is union. The choice of style tends to be based on physical ability and personal preference. Hatha yoga, the most common type of yoga practiced, combines three elements: physical poses; controlled breathing; and a short period of deep relaxation or meditation. For many people dealing with stress, depression or anxiety, yoga may be a very appealing way to feel better and manage symptoms. Indeed, the scientific study of yoga demonstrates that mental and physical health is not just closely allied, but is essentially equivalent. The evidence is growing that yoga practice is a beneficial approach to improving overall health. Famous celebrities practicing yoga are Meg Ryan, Jennifer Anniston, Ricky Martin, and Madonna. Says Meg Ryan: "I started [yoga] about

five years ago. I will say, definitely, it changed my life. It made me calmer. It puts you right in the place of witness - which is great." Benefits of Yoga include: l Released tension l Decreased stress, anxiety, and depression l Improved concentration and memory l It is energising l Improved balance l It requires minimal effort and is very relaxing l Slow dynamic and static movements reduce risk of injury l Decreased resting heart rate l Decreased pain l Improved immunity l It is non-competitive and process oriented l It allows to focus internally. A study on rats concluded that administration of a diet rich in fructose leads to increased triglyceride and blood sugar levels and alters insulin resistance, possibly contributing to the development of metabolic syndrome. Fructose, in addition, reduces antioxidant activity and contributes to liver damage. Fructose is an ingredient used in beverages as a sweetening agent. Studies have shown that metabolic syndrome is associated with intake of western diets rich in sugars and saturated fats. Researchers from Brazil conducted a study to evaluate if a diet rich in fructose could alter metabolism in rats. The study was done on 28 rats divided into 2 groups. One group of rats was fed a fructose-rich diet over 8 weeks, while the second group was fed a normal diet. Some of the animals were euthanized at the end of the study to evaluate the effect of a high fructose diet on the liver and various metabolic parameters. At the end of 8 weeks, it was found that the rats fed on fructose-rich had similar weights compared to those rats fed with a normal diet. The authors thus concluded that a high fructose diet does not cause short-term changes in weight. The fructose-fed rats were found to have a reduced glucose tolerance and insulin sensitivity. Their livers also showed high levels of triglycerides; fructose is normally converted into triglycerides in the liver. The antioxidant activity was reduced in fructose-fed rats. Liver enzymes were also affected indicating liver damage. The liver damage was confirmed on microscopic examination of the liver. This study on rats thus indicates that a diet rich in fructose could lead to liver damage and cause metabolic effects that may contribute to the development of metabolic syndrome. Reference: 1. Botezelli JD et al. Fructose consumption leads to reduced aerobic capacity and to liver injury in rats. Lipids in Health and Disease 2012, 11:78 doi:10.1186/1476-511X-11-78

If it is left untreated, high blood glucose levels can lead to serious damage to the body. Complications of diabetes include blindness, kidney failure, heart disease, stroke and limb amputation. When you are diagnosed with diabetes, you may have had one of these symptoms; itchiness, blurred vision, loss of weight, always thirsty, frequent urination, tiredness, or leg cramps.
Prevalence of identified diabetes by ethnicity for the CMDHB population

What is Diabetes?
Diabetes is a condition where the glucose (sugar) level in the blood is too high. It develops when your body can not make enough of a hormone called insulin, or when you cannot use the insulin your body produces.

If you have noticed any of these symptoms recently, please talk to your doctor or nurse. Have you had a large baby weighing more than 9 lbs/4 kg? Have you had diabetes during pregnancy? Do you have impaired glucose tolerance (IGT)? South Asian people living in new Zealand are at high risk of developing diabetes, heart disease and high blood pressure. Weight gain, especially around the waist, increases the risk of developing these diseases.

If you are vegetarian, eat a wide variety of pulses/legumes or dahls to ensure you are getting enough protein. what fits in the palm of your hand e.g.:
3/4 cup meat curry (190g)

Milk provides essential nutrients including calcium, protein and some vitamins. The calcium is needed for strong bones and teeth. Serving size examples 1 glass milk (250 mls) 1 pottle or small cup yoghurt (curd) (150g) 1 glass of thin chaas (buttermilk) (250 mls) 2 thin slices cheese (40g) 1/3 cup paneer (40g)

1 chicken leg or breast or 2 drumsticks 2 eggs

1/3 cup nuts (small handful)

Tips
reduced fat (light blue top) or low fat (green, yellow top) is best for most adults children over two years old should have reduced fat (light blue top). children aged 1-2 years should have full fat (dark blue top)

1 cup cooked legumes / thick dahl 11/2 cups thin dahl

Tips:

The fibre in them helps lower blood sugar and cholesterol levels soya (chunks or minced) or paneer (cottage cheese) could be added as options. These can be mixed easily into vegetable or rice dishes, or stuffed in a bread roll or roti for lunch packs choose lean meat and trim fat off before cooking. Boil mince and drain fat off before further cooking or serving remove the chicken skin and fat underneath before adding to a curry aim for two fish meals a week if you are not vegetarian. Oily fish, e.g. surmai (salmon), paaplet (pomfret) and canned fish, e.g. salmon and tuna, have heart protective omega 3 fatty acids (refer page 9 for vegetarian omega 3 sources)

do not avoid milk because you are trying to lose weight. Change to a low fat variety instead use reduced or low fat milk for homemade yoghurt (curd). Choose non creamy yoghurts if low fat varieties are not available when buying if you have a raised blood cholesterol level, have low fat milk and milk products if you use soy milk, choose one with added calcium

Tips
include vegetables of many different colours as these are most health protective. Colourful vegetables, especially green leafy vegetables, are also low in calories so great to fill up on try different methods of cooking and serving vegetables such as steaming, stir fry or salads including vegetables roasted in very little oil. This will add variety and interest frozen and canned are just as good as fresh and sometimes cheaper

lassi (thick buttermilk) is high in sugar. Prepare it with low fat yoghurt and use fruit or artificial sweetener so that it is a healthy drink Vitamin D is needed for healthy bones, muscles and teeth as it helps with the absorption of calcium. Food (meat, egg yolk, fish) provides only small amounts of vitamin D. We need to make the rest through sunlight acting on skin. It is important to spend 20 - 30 minutes (more if you have darker skin) in the sun, before 11am and after 4pm, with parts of your body (for example face, arms and legs) uncovered. Talk to your doctor about a Vitamin D supplement if you are unable to do this.
