INTRODUCTION This module is designed to provide an introduction into the basic physics of a special class of materials : functional oxides, in specific conducting oxides for example semiconductor, photocatalyst, superconductor, electrochromic, noncentrosymmetric, ionic conductor, magnetic and magnetoresistance oxides. It will cover several essential topics on the crystal structure of the functional oxides and relating the structure to the intriguing properties that the oxides have. In this module, the synthesis, preparation and characterisation of several functional oxides (with properties stated above) will be elucidated. Part of the course will focus on the development of functional oxide in nanoscale. Overviews on the current and possible future technological applications of the functional oxides and other issues relevant for applications will be explored and presented via several case studies that will be presented and discussed. The ultimate aim of this course is to evoke interest of participants in this fascinating class of materials and also to equip them with essential knowledge on the pressing fundamental challenges in the formation, synthesis and applications of electronic functional oxides. COURSE OBJECTIVES OURSE 1. To explore the basic physics of functional oxides especially those with unique and interesting characteristics: conductor, semiconductor, photocatalyst, superconductor, noncentrosymmetric, magnetic and magnetoresistance oxides and on the current and possible future technological applications of these electronic oxides. 2. To expose the audience with common methods to synthesis several examples of these functional oxides and on the common characterisations methods employed to study the oxides. 3. To equip the audience with essential knowledge on the pressing fundamental challenges in the formation, synthesis and applications of the functional oxides.

COURSE FACILITATOR
Associate Professor Dr. Zainovia Lockman did her undergraduate work in Materials Science and Engineering at Imperial College London, UK. She graduated with a first class honours in 1999 and was a recipient of Lord Richardson Award for Outstanding Undergraduate Students in the UK and in the same year she received an Overseas Research Scheme Award awarded by the Committee of Vice-Chancellors and Principals of UK and Eire for her to peruse her doctorate degree in electronic materials. In 2003, she received her PhD on Electronic Materials in specific on oxides superconductor. Upon completing her PhD at Imperial College, Dr Zainovia first worked as a post-doctoral research assistant at Imperial College, and then moved to University of Cambridge, UK to continue her research works on the synthesis and characterisations of various nanostructured electronic oxides. She was also involved in the study of intermediate temperature superconductor. She now works at Universiti Sains Malaysia and has been focusing her research activities in synthesis and characterisations of electronic oxides. Her current research interest lies in the synthesis process of oxide nanotubes, nanorods and nanowires by physical, chemical and oxidation processes. Her research activities are funded by the Ministry of Higher Education and Ministry of Science Technology and Innovation, Malaysia through various schemes and she is also the recipient of several grants from international bodies, for example Nippon Sheets Glass Foundation, Japan and United Kingdom Prime Minister Initiative II Award. Dr Zainovia was awarded UNESCO-LOreal Malaysia for Women in Science Fellowship in 2009 for her outstanding performance in materials science and was a recipient of Springer Young Scientist Award 2010 at a conference in France. Recently Dr Zainovia received an award from Malaysian Association of Solid State Science and also from Electron Microscopy Society Malaysia. She has published more than 140 manuscripts especially in high impact journals and also in national journals as well as in conference proceedings. She has participated in several products innovation exhibitions and has organised and co-organised several international conferences related to nanotechnology, nanomaterials and materials sciences.
