Niashure Rumen protected niacin

Background
Niacin is highly degraded in the rumen of both dairy (Santschi et al., 2004) and beef cattle (Zinn et al., 1987) (Table 1). This is likely the reason why responses to Niacin have been variable at best (NRC, 2001). However, recent research has shown that feeding large amounts of niacin Table 1. Ruminal disappearance of Niacin. Study % ruminal disappearance Santschi et al., 2004 98.5 Zinn et al., 1987 93.8 to transition cows in order to compensate for ruminal losses resulted in very positive responses in terms of reducing NEFA mobilization (French, 2004). This reduction in NEFA mobilization through improved carbohydrate metabolism is the suggested mode of action of niacin. Similarly, earlier research noted more positive responses to slug fed doses or larger doses of niacin (Jaster et al., 1983) than typical feeding studies. All of this points to the need to protect niacin from ruminal degradation in order to have efficient, effective responses.

Niashures properties
Niashure is protected using the same proprietary technology used to make Reashure choline. This technology is a research proven technology shown to consistently deliver rumen protected, bioavailable nutrients to dairy cows (ex. Deuschler et al., 1998). This technology when applied to Niashure has created a unique source of rumen protected niacin that has overcome the issues of rumen degradation of niacin, with a product that is approximately 85% stable in the rumen (Figure 1).

Cost effectiveness
Niashure is 8X more potent than raw niacin on delivering bioavailable niacin. As a result, Niashure can be used in one of two ways: o To lower the cost of niacin use and maintain biologically effective supply to the cow o To significantly increase the biologically effective supply of niacin at the same cost per cow per day as current supplements

Handling advantages
Niashures encapsulation creates a dust free, free flowing, safe and easy to handle product. Niashures encapsulation can prevent the niacin flush that is often associated with handling raw niacin and improve worker ease and safety when handling niacin as a ingredient in feed and premix mills.

Bottomline
Niashure can more biologically and cost effectively deliver niacin to ruminant animals than current forms of niacin on the market. From this, dairy producers and their feed companies and nutritionists can more effectively realize the benefits of niacin in their programs that they have been counting on for years. Furthermore, workers in feed mills can handle it safely without the typical side effects noted with handling raw niacin.
