ECORSE Police have a 37-year-old man in custody in connection with a homicide, but charges had not been filed as of Friday afternoon, Public Safety Director Gerald Champagne said. He said charges likely would come over the weekend. The detective assigned to the case has been working on a warrant request with the Wayne County Prosecutors Office. The victim, a 59-year-old Ecorse man, was shot once in the heart at close range while riding his bicycle at Seventh Street and Salliotte Road at about 10:45 p.m. Wednesday, Champagne said. He was taken to Wyandotte Henry Ford Hospital, where he was pronounced dead. Champagne said the shooting did not appear to have been random
and the victim and the shooter likely knew each other. Police have not established a motive, but Champagne said it was not a robbery and did not appear to be gang-related. We dont have a motive at this time, but theres nothing to indicate either one of those two, he said. Champagne declined to release the name of the victim, saying some relatives have been notified but he wasnt sure if his closest kin had been told. A published report said the man was shot after an argument with a neighbor over politics. Champagne could not verify those details.
