Getting Started with a Starter Disable Installation

Personal Safety Guidelines

Read the applicable Locator installation guide, which contains personal safety guidelines. To avoid injury, read all instructions before installing the starter disable feature.

Starter Disable Description

Using either an MDT or Locator, the Webtech starter disable feature provides customers with the ability to prevent an engine from starting or restarting once a vehicle has come to a full stop and the engine is turned off. The starter disable feature is optional and requires both installation and configuration on the Locator or MDT. Customers purchase the WebTech Starter Relay kit (part number 03-14-0001-00.0), which is installed to a telemetry output of the WebTech Locator or MDT. The feature is then activated over-the-air (OTA) by Technical Support. The starter disable feature is configurable on WT5000 Series and WT6000 Series Locators using telemetry outputs (usually output 7). The MDT2000E uses output 2. The feature can also be combined with either the MDT or Locator Driver ID kits to allow only valid drivers to log into a vehicle and start the engine. Current versions of this and other manuals are available on the customer portal at www.webtechwireless.com.

Locator Starter Disable Limitations

Potential Vehicle Tow Charges with Locator Installations

Note

This limitation is NOT applicable to MDT installations. Over-the-air (OTA) telemetry commands cannot be sent to a vehicle or Locator that is outside a cell or wireless coverage area. For this reason, installing the starter disable command feature with a Locator may result in a vehicle tow charge. The starter disable feature prevents an engine from starting or re-starting once the vehicle has come to a full stop and the engine is turned off. The engine does not start in a vehicle that is both outside a cell or wireless coverage area and has the starter disable command issued. The vehicle needs to be towed to a coverage area where OTA commands can be sent to start the engine, re-set the starter disable command, and allow the engine to be started.

Module 2

Installing the Starter Disable Relay with a Locator

The Locator Starter Disable Feature
Refer to the applicable Locator Installation Guide and to one of the figures below for starter disable relay installation. If required, navigate to the Quadrant Portal on www.webtechwireless.com to download the Locator installation guide or contact Technical Support for assistance. Use of the Locator starter disable feature is configurable on WT5000 Series and WT6000 Series Locators, usually using telemetry output 7. The feature can also be combined with a Locator Driver ID kit to allow only valid drivers to log into a vehicle and start the engine. Note The starter disable feature can be activated EITHER by an over-the-air command OR using the Driver ID kit login, not by both.

How to Install the Locator to Use Starter Disable

Important In some installations, a diode must be installed across the relay coil. The diode protects the Locator from any reverse voltages, which could reach 200 Volts. The diode absorbs the reverse voltage spike. You may need to supply the diode: IF the relay is included with the Locator shipment, the diode is already connected in the relay. Refer to Figure 2-1 for the wiring diagram. IF the relay is NOT included with the Locator shipment, you need to supply the diode. The diode is part number 1N400x (x=1-7). Refer to Figure 2-2 for the wiring diagram. 1. 2. 3. 4. 5. Locate the ignition harness wire from the starter switch (+12V with key in crank position) to the starter relay or solenoid. Cut the starter wire on ignition harness. Connect wire from starter switch to pin 87A. Connect wire to starter relay/solenoid to pin 30. Connect output 7 to pin 85. a. If the relay is NOT supplied by WebTech, the installer is required to connect the diodes anode (use the side without a stripe) to pin 85. 6. Connect ignition switch +12V to pin 86. a. If the relay is NOT supplied by WebTech, the installer is required to connect the diodes cathode (use the side with the stripe) to pin 86.

Installing the Starter Disable Relay with an MDT

The MDT Starter Disable Feature
Refer to the MDT Installation Guide and to one of the figures below for starter disable relay installation. If required, navigate to the Quadrant Portal on www.webtechwireless.com to download the installation guide or contact Technical Support for assistance. The MDT2000E is set up to disable the vehicle starter using an external relay. The MDT controlled I/O is accessed through the flying leads on the MDT cable. The starter disable feature can be combined with an MDT Driver ID kit to allow only valid drivers to login to the MDT and start the engine.

How to Install the MDT to Use Starter Disable

Important In some installations, a diode must be installed across the relay coil. The diode protects the Locator from any reverse voltages, which could reach 200 Volts. The diode absorbs the reverse voltage spike. You may need to supply the diode: IF the relay is included with the MDT shipment, the diode is already connected in the relay. Refer to Figure 3-1 for the wiring diagram. IF the relay is NOT included with the MDT shipment, you need to supply the diode. The diode is part number 1N400x (x=1-7). Refer to Figure 3-2 for the wiring diagram. Note The I/O are grounding (open collector) outputs that require an external power supply to operate. 7. 8. 9. Locate the ignition harness wire from the starter switch (+12V with key in crank position) to the starter relay or solenoid. Cut the starter wire on ignition harness. Connect wire from starter switch to pin 87.

10. Connect wire to starter relay/solenoid to pin 30. 11. Connect output 2 to pin 85. a. If the relay is NOT supplied by WebTech, the installer is required to connect the diodes anode (use the side without a stripe) to pin 85.
