PREREQUISITE SUBJECT : Thermodynamics I

(A) SYNOPSIS

The course emphasizes on the application of thermodynamics laws in engineering applications,

exposing the working principle of power plants, machines and engines that operate based on
thermodynamics system. The systems include steam and gas power plants, heat pump and
refrigeration system, reciprocating compressor, internal combustion engines and non reactive
mixtures, and cooling tower system.

(B) GOALS The goal of this course is to enhance the understanding,

knowledge, and skills of the students in thermodynamics
applications.

(C) OBJECTIVES

The objectives of this course are to enable the students to:

(1) apply thermodynamic theories to Engineering applications.

(2) analyze the thermodynamics cycles and systems to determine their performance and
behaviors
(3) evaluate thermodynamics cycles and systems based on their performance and
characteristics.

(D) LEARNING OUTCOMES

At the end of this course, the students would be able to:

(1) interpret the processes of the thermodynamic cycle and translates it into a schematic and
property diagram such as the T-s, p-h and p-v diagram.
(2) apply the theories and related techniques to determine the characteristics of the
thermodynamic cycles and thermal systems such as the efficiency, the work ratio, and the
working fluid consumption rate.
(3) evaluate the performances of studied power plants, compressors, refrigeration systems, and
internal combustion engines based on their characteristics.
(4) apply the laws of mixture to obtain the properties and characteristics of gas to gas mixture
and gas to vapor mixture.
(5) communicate and work effectively in a group through given assignments and presentations.
