Book Signing
By Skeet Wolters
In conjunction with the 175
th

Anniversary Celebration of St. Henry,
the Mission Club held a quilt show
in the St. Henry Catholic Church
basement. Approximately 80 original
and vintage quilts were displayed along
with various other quilted items. The
treasures were hung in neat rows from
the ceiling of the much-welcomed
air-conditioned space. The mood was
festive and stimulating as young and old
alike strolled the aisles.
Upon immediate entering, the view
was the handsome quilt made by the
current 4
th
grade students of St. Henry
elementary school. The dark blue
blocks created by the students were
strategically positioned, bound by a
white border, framed in red, and then
seamed and quilted by Dorothy Schmitt
of St. Henry. Art teacher, Shelly
Zeller and principle, Sandy Stammen
coordinated the project. Jerry Buschur
was the winning bidder of the quilt that
was auctioned off on Sunday evening.
Marge Niekamp, and grand
committee of 18, coordinated the quilt
show and ironically many of the quilts,
old and new, had Dorothy Schmitts
name attached to them. She is well
respected by locals for her handwork
and eye for loveliness.
Eleven-year-old Janel Stachler, of St.
Henry, was adorable in her long skirted
dress, shaw, and sunbonnet hat, as she
sat at her framed quilt with threaded
needle in hand. She is the granddaughter
of Rita Stachler and daughter of Ted and
Joan Stachler. Grandma Rita exhibited
a 50 States Quilt that she embroidered,
pieced and machine quilted. It featured
each states bird and flower along with
the outline of each state.
Many contemporary quilters are
purely artistic in their creations and
construct amazing items and comparing
them to the vintage quilts is perhaps a
mistake. The vintage quilts utilized
scrapes of fabric from many uses and
most of them were utilitarian, meaning
used for warmth or as bedspreads.
Strategically placed among the
vintage quilts were several modern
surprises including a purple and gold quilt
made from bags that once held bottles
of Crown Royal. Doris Rutschilling
pieced this quilt that brought smiles to
many viewers including myself.
Congratulations and thank you to
the quilt committee for an inspiring and
motivating viewing experience.

DoLLARS!! Does that sound
like a lot of money to you?
Is it a figure with which you
are familiar? If you are like
me then you realize that is
a lot of money to be passing
around. In case you missed
it that amount of money
will be spent on Television
advertising for the up coming
political campaign.
I can think of a better
way to spend that amount of
money and get a better return
for my dollar than the election
regardless of who gets elected.
The really scary thing about
all this is the ones in charge
look at that amount of money
as being just incidental to the
re-election campaign. Im
glad I am not a politician! I
dont think I could sleep well
at night let alone face my
constituents and try to explain
the condition of the economy.
If any of you out there has
a good prayer for rain I would
suggest you get very busy with
it. From the looks of some
of the crops, both beans and
corn, here in Mercer County
and surrounding counties
it may be too late all ready.
There may be some hope for
the bean crop if we can just
get some rain. you hear all
sorts of numbers related to
the success of the corn crops,
some say 40%, some say even
more is all ready lost. Either
number is not good and one
just hopes most of the farmers
have a good crop insurance to
cover all their losses. Lets
hope the Government steps in
and helps our farmers here at
home instead of sending all
that money overseas!!
Thats My opinion.....

Your 401(k) offers tax-deductible contributions, tax-deferred growth of
earnings potential and a variety of investment options so its a great tool
for building retirement savings. Yet like all tools, your 401(k) must be used
properly to get the best results. Thats why you should review your 401(k) at
least annually and make whatever adjustments are needed.
Depending on where you work, you may get some 401(k) review help
from your plan provider. But if that assistance isnt available, you might want to
consult with a financial professional to make sure youre getting the maximum
benefit from your plan.
As you begin to review your 401(k), your first question should probably
be this:
How much should I contribute? At the very least, try to put in enough to
receive your employers matching contribution, if one is offered. If you dont
earn this match, you are essentially walking away from free money. Beyond
this, though, the amount you put into your 401(k) might depend on what other
retirement savings vehicles you have available. For instance, if youre eligible,
you may also want to contribute to a Roth IRA, which offers tax-free growth
potential, provided youve had your account for five years and dont start
taking withdrawals until youre 59.
Of course, its not only how much you put into your 401(k) that determines
its success its also how you choose to allocate your investment dollars.
(Keep in mind that asset allocation does not guarantee a profit or protect
against loss.) Your 401(k) may have a dozen or more investment choices,
such as stock funds, bond funds and money market funds. To choose the right
investment mix, youll need to consider a variety of factors, including these:
Your age Generally speaking, the younger you are, the more
aggressive you can afford to be with your 401(k) investments, because
youll have decades in which to potentially overcome the inevitable down
periods of the market. As you get older, you may wish to invest somewhat
more conservatively, but youll still need some growth potential in your 401(k)
portfolio.
Your goals Everyone has different goals for retirement. You might
want to retire early and travel the world, while your co-worker desires to
work as long as possible and then, upon retirement, stay close to home and
pursue hobbies. Because you each have different goals, with different income
needs, you also may need to follow different investment strategies within your
401(k).
Your other retirement income sources If you have a variety of
retirement income sources a pension from another job, an IRA, a spouse
with generous retirement benefits you may need to invest differently,
perhaps less aggressively, than if you had fewer options for retirement
income.
Apart from putting away as much as you can into your 401(k) and
choosing the right investment mix, what else can you do to get the most out
of your plan? Heres a suggestion: If you have worked at various jobs and
acquired multiple 401(k)s, consider rolling them over into one account. You
might save money on fees and reduce paperwork, but more importantly,
youll be able to concentrate your resources and pursue a unified investment
approach, with your investment dollars working together toward your ultimate
retirement goals.
As you can see, a 401(k) review and rollover can reward you in many
ways so do whatever it takes to maximize your 401(k)s performance.

John M. Yoder, Financial Advisor
The investment world can be complex so you may not want to navigate it alone. But when it comes
to getting professional advice, you certainly have an abundance of choices. How can you know which
approach is right for you?
The answer depends, to a large extent, on how you choose to work with a qualifed fnancial advisor
someone with the training and experience to help you work toward your fnancial goals. When you work
with a fnancial advisor, he or she will analyze your fnancial situation your income, current assets, family
status and short- and long-term investment goals, such as helping pay for your childrens (or grandchildrens)
college education and attaining a comfortable retirement.
You can choose different ways of working with a fnancial advisor and a deciding factor may be how
hands on you want to be with your investment strategy. To illustrate this concept, lets look at two common
ways investors interact with fnancial advisors:
* Taking recommendations and making choices After evaluating your fnancial situation, goals, risk
tolerance and time horizon, your fnancial advisor can recommend appropriate investments. Over time, your
fnancial advisor will communicate with you regularly to keep track of changes in your life and to suggest any
changes you may need to make in your portfolio. Of course, you have the fnal say in accepting or rejecting
these recommendations, which is why this method is considered a hands-on way to invest.
* Investing through a managed account In this situation, your fnancial advisor will help you create,
implement and refne your long-term fnancial strategy, but the money managers will make the daily
investment decisions, relying on a variety of criteria pertaining to your situation. For example, if your portfolio
has become overweighted in a specifc asset class, such as stocks or bonds, and is no longer aligned with
your goals, it may automatically be brought back into balance.
So which method of investing is better for you? Theres really no one right answer for everyone. If
youre the sort of person who likes to make all your own decisions, then you might be better off following
the hands-on approach with your fnancial advisor. On the other hand, if you are particularly busy and just
dont feel you have the time to be actively involved with day-to-day investment decisions, you might want to
consider a managed account.
In any case, youll want to be comfortable with the method of investing that youve chosen. So do your
homework beforehand. Whether youre interested in a hands-on relationship or a hands-off approach, you
still need to interview several fnancial advisors to fnd one who has worked with people in your situation
and who seems genuinely interested in helping you. During these interviews, make sure you understand
everything related to working with a fnancial advisor the fees involved, the way decisions will be
communicated to you if you choose a managed account, and so on.

Myths & Facts about Ticks
This year we are hearing from pet owners that they are seeing many ticks and feas. This week I
am sharing an article with you about ticks. Next week, I will discuss the escalated fea problem we are
having this year.
Ticks are disease-carrying ticks to dogs and people wherever they live. The U.S. Centers for
Disease Control (CDC) that the number of tick-borne illnesses is increasing, and that ticks in every U.S.
state carry disease. The signs of tick-borne disease are hard to recognize for both pets and humans,
so simple preventative measures and understanding are the best ways to keep safe. Here are some
myths and truths about ticks from DogsandTicks.com to help you understand:
Myth: The best way to remove a tick is with a lit match fngernail polish, or petroleum jelly.
Fact: None of these methods cause the tick to back out, and all of them may result in the tick
depositing more disease-carrying saliva into the wound, increasing the risk of infection.
The best way to remove a tick is to grasp it as close to the skin as possible with tweezers and pull
the ticks body out with a steady motion. Wear rubber gloves, and clean the skin with soap and water
after removal. Dispose of the tick by placing it in alcohol or fushing it down the toilet.
Myth: Lyme disease is the only illness that ticks can transmit to dogs and humans.
Fact: Lyme is the most widely known and common tick disease, but there are many others that
ticks carry and can transmit to both people and dogs. These include but are not limited to Rocky
Mountain spotted fever, anaplasmosis (sometimes referred to as dog fever), ehrilichiosis and some
emerging diseases with potentially devastating effects.
Myth: Ticks arent a problem in the winter when its too cold for them to live outside.
Fact: In most areas of the country, high season for ticks runs from April to November. Experts
recommend year-round protection as an infection can occur at any time of the year. In the winter, for
example, some tick species move indoors and are in closer contact with people and pets, while others
make a type of antifreeze to survive the winter months.
Myth: Ticks live in trees, and if I dont visit a wooded area, I have nothing to worry about.
Fact; Ticks live on the ground no matter the locale, an urban park or rural area. They
typically crawl up from grass blades onto a host and migrate upwards, which is why they are
often found on the scalp.
Myth: Ticks are insects.
Fact: Ticks are a species of parasites called arachnids that belong in the same family
as mites .

you ask why am I announcing
a November event in the middle
of the summer in July? I have
one good reason. I need your
help. Everywhere I go, in Celina
or Saint Marys, or Montezuma,
or around the Lake, I see old
photographs of this Lake posted
in the restaurants, and other
businesses. you Lake Residents
know stories of history related to
this Lake!
The people who know about
the Landings, Restaurants,
Marinas, and Parks around the
Lake, are not always local citizens.
Many of our Summer time Lake
Visitors come from Lima or
Dayton or Springfield, or other
ohio or Indiana communities.
People who live around the Lake,
whether just in the summertime,
or all year around, have old
photographs and post cards, etc.
of Grand Lake Saint Marys.
May I ask you readers if you
will help the Historical Society
by loaning old photos, etc.,
for this November 11 Exhibit?
September would be a good time
to contact me about this exhibit.
That will give you time to check
out your own collections of
Memories from this Lake.
Look at the Post Card
Photograph of Grubbs Cottages,
with the names Dora-Lin
posted at the front door. you can
date this photograph by the age
of the automobile in front of the
Cottage. The front of the cottage
reminds me of some of the older
cottages along West Bank Road,
at Celina. I looked in the old
Directories, and found Russell
Grubb, living at Montezuma, in
1916. Later, I found Lawrence
and Melvenah Grubbs, living at
303 Jay Street, Celina, in 1953;
Lawrence worked at Mersmans
Company. Thats it. I know
no history of Grubbs Cottages.
Who can write me or email me,
about information for the Grubbs
Cottages?
The Mission of the Mercer
County Historical Society is
to preserve Mercer Countys
history and to educate the public
about that history. Please help
the Historical Society to preserve
the history of Grand Lake
Saint Marys, by sharing your
photographs and your knowledge
with us.

Celina Couple Receives Albert Heckler
Award from Cheryl Ann Programs
Louis and Dorothy Hoyng never imagined that theyd be-
come involved with Cheryl Ann Programs.
They were raising three happy, healthy boys in their Celina
home. Louie operated his custom upholstery shop next door,
and Dorothy worked in the high school cafeteria. They were a
typical family.
Then a very atypical thing happened. Their middle son,
Brian, was struck by lightning in 1981 when he was 16. With
that bolt out of the blue, the Hoyngs lives changed forever.
The odds of being struck by lightning are one in 280,000,
but the Hoyngs couldnt afford to spend much time thinking
about their terrible luck. They had a son who needed them
more than he ever had. The first years after Brians accident,
which left him with severe disabilities, were very difficult,
they said, as they searched for someone who could help them
help Brian.
Their school district helped as much as it could. Finally, then-
Superintendent Ralph Stelzer recommended a place the Hoyngs
knew about but had never visited as parents: Cheryl Ann.
Cheryl Ann was the best thing that ever happened to us,
Louie Hoyng said. It gave Brian his life back.
The people of Cheryl Ann helped Brian with his everyday
life. They gave him a place to go and jobs to do. He made new
friends, and enjoyed everything about his experiences there,
up to and including the bus ride out to Mud Pike.
When he would see Sam Morden (his bus aide) he would
just smile, and the people in Adult Day Services really knew
how to make him laugh, Dorothy Hoyng said.
It wasnt long before the Hoyngs were finding ways to re-
pay Cheryl Ann for its help. They were regular volunteers.
Louie Hoyng completed upholstery jobs for the unique
equipment used at Cheryl Ann, and often, said Superintendent
Mike Overman, Louie would forget to send us a bill. He
also served a term on the county MRDD board and was the
board president.
For all that, and for their tireless advocacy on behalf of
their son, the Hoyngs received the Albert Heckler Award at
the staff appreciation banquet in March. The award is given
each year to a Cheryl Ann family that exemplifies service and
advocacy.
The Hoyngs both served as good examples of first-rate
advocates for their son, Overman said. They rarely ever
missed a day spending time with him, and they always spoke
up to be sure his needs were being met. They were really spe-
cial parents for Brian, and really good supporters of our pro-
gram.
Brian Hoyng died in February 2008 at the age of 43. In the
years after the lightning strike he taught his family a lot about
patience, hope, endurance and acceptance. He introduced the
Hoyngs to a world they had only seen from the outsidebut it
was a world where they found welcome and acceptance.
We met some wonderful people during our years at Cheryl
Ann, Dorothy Hoyng said. They worked their hearts out
helping us with Brian.

Stateline Writers Meet
At the April meeting of the Stateline Writers Club, members read
profiles they had written about someone, living or dead or make-
believe, and member Eileen Whitsetts special activity of having mem-
bers combine pictures of particular scenes with a person or people
assigned to them to put into that scene brought interesting results.
Sue Miller and Gretchen Bollenbachers proposal for a special
meeting designed to attract new members was described and approved.
Members will be hosted by the Coldwater Public Library in June for
a reading of their best work.
At the next meeting, which will be on Saturday, May 16, mem-
bers will rehearse for their special program in June.
Stateline club members meet the 3rd Saturday of each month at
10 a.m. at the Celina Mercer County Library. Anyone interested in
coming to a meeting or becoming a member is cordially invited to
attend.
Celina Rotary Dog Park Dedicated
BY: BETTY LOU DENNEY/HALL
Opening day at the Celina Rotary Dog Park received
rave revues from the dogs. As the gates opened for the first
time on Tuesday May 12, dogs of all sizes were seen mak-
ing their way to the park to get a chance to run in over 3
acres of wide open spaces of the chain-linked fenced in
area. Small dogs area is an acre and the large dogs have
over 2 acres. The new park, which is one of newest and
biggest things happening in the State Parks around the coun-
try, was made possible due to the efforts of Deborha Borns,
Rotary Club President. Her friend, Darlene Lynskey, is also
working on getting a State Dog Park in her home town of
St. Marys. The two dog lovers along with many volunteers
worked many hours with the help of the State and Craig
Morton, who is the regional manager of Grand Lake St.
Marys. Together they cleared away debris from the previ-
ously unused land. The Park is located at the end of West
Bank Road
Deb Borns saw her idea come to life with the help of the
Celina Rotary Clubs major donation and businesses as well
as individuals who helped with labor and monetary dona-
tions. The idea came to her after visiting another dog park.
At the dedication ceremony Deb thanked many of the
people who made the park possible. Jeff Larmore, Past
Rotary President and Celina City Council Member spoke
as his 150 pound Newfoundland, Bentley checked out the
park. Jeff is also a large contributor to the park in honor of
the recovery of Bentley after he had been lost for several
days. Craig Morton, Regional Manager of State Park Gand
Lake St. Marys and John Hunter, Assistant Chief of the
Division of Parks and Recreation also spoke at the dedica-
tion ceremony. Deb concluded her speech with some wise
lessons that she has learned from her own dogs. A few of
which were: Never leave home without your leach and
your ID. If you stare at someone long enough, you will get
what you want. Last, if it is not wet and sloppy it is not a
real kiss.
One of the many visitors enjoying running free on dedi-
cation day was a lab /poodle mix owned by Dave Hochstien,
professor at Wright State University. He has other dogs at
home but decided to only bring one at a time. He com-
mented that this was the first time his dog had this much
exercise since he got him a year ago.
There are a few small problems to work out with the
park, such as the water faucet would not shut off and there
was a small hole under the fence in the small dog side of
the park, which of course was found by one of the little
furry visitors on dedication day. These problems will be
easily fixed. Memberships ($10) to Fur Ever Friends are
being sold to help with the upkeep of the park. The use of
the park is free to the public. One of the additions they
would like to have is benches added to the park for the
comfort of the owners.
The green stations placed around the fence for the dog
wastes were given at a discount by Florida based company
named DogiPot. Gary Brown, Assistant Operations Man-
ger, heard about the plans for the park and wanted to help
by giving discounts on the pots. The company has all Oxi-
biodegradable bags inside the pots for your dog waste. Gary
flew in from Florida to be a part of the ribbon cutting and
opening of the park. More of their products can be found
by going to: www.propet.org.
If visiting the park remember to follow the rules that are
posted at the entrance. Common sense is your guide such
as:
Dogs should have their current shots
The park has little dog and big dog sections, keep
dogs in their own spaces.
Dont leave dog unattended
Do not bring a dog that shows aggressive behavior
Keep small children under close supervision
Clean up after your own dog
Never bring a dog to the park that has an illness.
These are just a few precautions to remember. Check
the rules before entering the park and you and your dog
will have a great time The Park is open daylight to dark
everyday.
Deb Borns prepares to cut the ribbon at the Dedication of the Celina Rotary Club Dog Park. Helping to hold the ribbon
is Darlene Lynskey and John Hunter, assistant chief of the Ohios Division of Parks and Recreation. On left is Craig
Morton, Regional Manager of Grand Lake St. Marys. Right: Jeff Larmore and Bentley. Photo by Roy Hall.

Henry Hank Lefeld spoke to
the Coldwater Kiwanis Club on
July 10 about the early days of
baseball in Coldwater. Hank was
introduced by Lou Brunswick.
Though he has lived in St. Henry
all his life, Hank played for the
Coldwater baseball team, known
in their early years as the Eagles,
but later the Merchants, and more
recently the Moons, for about 15
years. Hank said Joe Lefeld was
the teams manager at the time he
played. The team played games
on Thursday evenings and Sunday
afternoons for many years. They
passed the hat through the crowd
to raise money to defray expenses.
Many local communities had
teams in those days including the
Cassella owls, the Montezuma
Ducks, and the Sharpsburg Speeds
to name a few. In fact, one of the
first lighted diamonds in the state
was constructed west of St. Henry
in 1938. Hank was signed by the
New york yankees and played for
a time in the minor leagues. Lou
followed Hanks presentation with
a brief history of ACME Baseball
and a glimpse at club member Jim
Kings baseball career.

~Why I Should Be Miss Lake Festival This Year~
Two years ago, my family witnessed first hand the
consequences of texting and driving. As Miss Lake
Festival 2012, I would spread the word about the dangers
of driving while distracted. Not only is it a hazard to
other drivers, but a potentially lethal endeavor for both
motorists and pedestrians.

~Why I Should Be Miss Lake Festival This Year~
The reason I have chosen the Miss America System is because
the young adults who compete in this system inspire so many
little girls. My leadership roles have given me confidence,
commitment, and charismatic personality to be a good role
model for these children to look up to. I am going to combine
my two favorite passions, reading and running by collecting new
and gently used books as an entry fee for 5K runs with which
I can then give back to the community and children in need.
The Miss Lake Festival title will not only help me to achieve this
goal, but provide me with many more opportunities to continue
community service and grow as a person.

Fresh Country Air
MATT REESE
My job as an agricultural
journalist is fun because it al-
lows me to travel this fascinat-
ing state on a regular basis, of-
ten on ohios 26 beautiful des-
ignated scenic byways (five of
which have a national designa-
tion). The five National Scenic
Byways in the state highlight
some of the states finest fea-
tures, including ohios bounti-
ful agricultural production.
lake Erie Coastal National
Scenic Byway
June is wine month and there
is no better route in the Midwest
to travel for fine wines than
ohios northern coast. ohios
wine business is booming and
gaining more international rec-
ognition every year for its high
quality wine production along
the temperate shores of Lake
Erie.
This route also offers ample
natural attractions for fishing
and bird enthusiasts and the
thrill-seeking appeal of Cedar
Point. Roller coasters, walleye
and wine, how can you go
wrong?
Historic National Road
National Scenic Byway
Much of this byway is lined
with interesting agricultural at-
tractions. Dull Homestead Farm
in Montgomery County features
a diversified operation including
hogs and seed corn, but the real
attention getter is the farms tow-
ering windmills and dedication to
renewable energy. The Dulls
have a visitors center to inform
guests about the farm. Devine
Farms and Pigeon Roost Farm in
Licking County offer pumpkins
and a myriad of fun family ori-
ented activities in the late sum-
mer and fall. The trip through
Belmont County passes near the
states largest Christmas tree
farm run by the Feisley family.
The renowned Dickinson Cattle
Co. Longhorn Cattle Ranch is
also near the route, just outside
of Barnesville. Also, be sure to
note the productive corn and soy-
bean fields lining much of Route
40 that are pumping dollars into
the economy and biofuels into
our vehicles.
Amish Country National
Scenic Byway
Few routes through ohio of-
fer more picturesque glimpses of
modern and Amish agriculture
than this byway winding through
the heart of the nations largest
Amish community in and around
Holmes and Wayne counties.
Grazing dairy cattle, rolling hay
fields and plenty of down home
Amish appeal (and merchandise)
attract many visitors each year.
ohio leads the nation in Swiss
cheese production, and ranks
high in other types of cheese pro-
duction, largely due to this region
of the state.
Ohio River National Scenic
Byway
It is hard to beat the rolling
landscape, charming towns, his-
torical and agricultural attractions
that ooze from this 452-mile
route along the ohio River
through 14 counties. A few of my
favorite stops along the way, or
nearby the designated byway, in-
clude Sweetapple Farms (agri-
tainment), Stacy Family Farms
(strawberries) and Grimms
Green Acres (apples) in Washing-
ton County; the bridge from
Galia County to Point Pleasant,
West Virginia, home of the mys-
terious Mothman that inspired a
book and movie; the appealing
murals in Portsmouth; and some
tasty Montgomery Inn ribs and a
Reds game in Cincinnati.
The Canal Way National
Scenic Byway
This byway runs from Cleve-
land to Dover along the path of the
ohio and Erie Canal and offers
several agricultural destinations.

I want to make sure Im eat-
ing the proper portion sizes, but I
dont want to weigh and measure
everything I eat. Is there an easy
way to estimate servings of differ-
ent foods?
Actually, there are a number of
ways to do this, and one is right at
your fingertips.
The 2012 Complete Food and
Nutrition Guide from the Academy
of Nutrition and Dietetics (for-
merly the American Dietetic Asso-
ciation) includes a Visual Guide to
Amounts, using an average-sized
hand to help you estimate. Its an
important topic, as portion sizes
have swelled (along with the aver-
age waist) over the years.
you can use these tips to make
sure you eat enough (or more) of:
* Vegetables, fruit, cereal, or
cooked beans, rice or pasta: A cup
is about the size of your fist.
* Nuts, seeds or dried fruit: An
ounce fits in a small cupped hand-
ful.
* Seafood: Three ounces of
cooked seafood is about the size of
your palm (no fingers).
And use similar guides to limit
these servings:
* Meat and poultry: Three ounc-
es is about the size of your palm.
* Cheese: An ounce is about the
size of your thumb, from the tip to
the base.
* Peanut butter: A tablespoon
is about the size of the tip of your
thumb, down to the first joint.
* Butter, margarine, mayon-
naise, oil or sugar: A teaspoon is
about the size of a fingertip, from
the tip to the first joint.
of course, your hand size may
vary, so you might want to weigh
or measure a few items after you do
an initial estimate. That way you
will know if you can choose a pork
chop, for example, thats slightly
larger than the palm of your hand,
or if you should take one thats a bit
smaller.
The plate method is another
way to estimate portion sizes. All
you do is imagine your dinner plate
is divided in half, and then one side
is divided in half again. Use the
first half for non-starchy vegetables
-- broccoli, zucchini or salad, for
example. Use one-fourth of the
plate for lean meat, fish, poultry
or other lean protein. And use one-
fourth for starchy vegetables, such
as potatoes, corn or peas, or other
starchy foods, including beans and
such grains as rice or pasta.
you can find another good vi-
sual guide on WebMD at http://bit.
ly/WebMDvisual. It uses common
household objects to help estimate
appropriate portion sizes (for exam-
ple, a small potato is about the size
of a computer mouse; 1.5 ounces
of hard cheese is about the size of
three dice). Take a look and see if
thats even more helpful (if not as
handy) as the other methods.

RoSSBURG, oH (July 14) --
All hail King Sammy XXIX. And
IX. And XVI. Sammy Swindell, the
veteran driver from Germantown,
Tenn., held off a spirited challenge
from Kerry Madsen over the final
five laps Saturday night to win his
third Kings Royal victory at Eldora
Speedway. He wasnt the only one
celebrating. Randy Hannagan
swept the National Racing Alliance
(NRA) Sprint Invaders weekend
with a pair of wins, including
Saturdays victory.
In the Kings Royal, the $50,000
winners check is the goal for
the World of outlaws Sprint Car
Series drivers, regional racers and
others who want to test their skill
against Eldora. But there are other
items the Kings Royal champion
cherishes in a post-race celebration
like no other. once dressed in the
red cape and holding his scepter,
Sovereign King Doug Wolfgang
presented Swindell with the Kings
Royal crown as the 56 driver took
his place on the oversized throne.
In the 29th running of the
prestigious and lucrative Kings
Royal, Swindell took the lead
from Daryn Pittman after 10 laps
and then clicked off the next 30 in
the 40-lap feature. An appreciative
and impressive crowd that packed
the grandstands and spilled out
onto the hills ringing the turns
cheered Swindells first Kings
Royal victory since 1999. He also
won in 1992.
Pittman and Paul McMahan
traded the lead the first four laps,
with each leading two. Pittman
then pulled away to lead laps 4-10.
Swindell worked his way around
Pittman to lead lap 11 and never
looked back. A caution bunched
up the field for a double-file restart
with 28 laps complete. But Swindell
quickly restored his advantage to
1.5 seconds as Madsen, Pittman
and Jac Haudenschild engaged in
a wild battle behind him. Madsen
finally broke free from the pack
and with five laps left made his
last-gasp move. He got underneath
Swindell in turns 1-2 but couldnt
hold the momentum.
I think he was trying to do all he
could, Swindell said. I couldnt
see where he was. I think we had
to be fairly evenly matched. If he
was faster I think I wouldve seen
him quite a few times. We must
have had fairly equal cars.
Swindell, who started third,
should have been celebrating a
repeat. He led 39 of 40 laps
last year before his right rear tire
shredded coming out of turn 4. He
avoided back luck this time, a day
after Friday the 13
th
.
Ive been close on quite a few
back during the years where if
things would have held together
we would have won, Swindell
said. you never know. The last
five laps it felt like the tire was
getting low or something. you
start looking at every little thing.
you try to concentrate on driving
and making good laps.

Henderson and Kraig Kinser
made up the top five. Pittman,
Joey Saldana, Donny Schatz, Greg
Wilson and Steve Kinser, who
grabbed the final transfer spot
in the B-Main feature to qualify
for every Kings Royal feature,
rounded out the top 10.
Its harder to win these things
and harder to do this. I really
love this place, Swindell said. I
always have. To win here is great.
you really have to have a good car
but you have to be smart. you have
to put the car in the right place and
keep the car under you. Its a tough
track but I enjoy it.
Minnesotas Craig Dollansky
was the fastest of the 50-cars
around the .500 mile oval in 13.338
seconds (134.953 mph).
Chad Kemenah, Justin
Henderson, Daryn Pittman,
Sammy Swindell, Paul McMahan
and Tim Kaeding all won heat
races. Dallas Hewitt won the
C-Main. Donny Schatz won the
B-Main.
In the NRA feature, Hannagan
survived a green-white-checkered
finish to add to his NRA points
lead. It was also his third win at
Eldora this season.
When you get the white flag
you want to make one more circuit
and then guys crash, Hannagan
said. Thats just the way it is. We
do the best job we can.
Kyle Sauder, Butch Schroeder,
Dustin Daggett and
Hud Horton rounded
out the top five.
Its good win
here, Hannagan said
following his sixth
NRA win. It helps
coming back to the
same race tracks. Im
really familiar with
them.
Kyle Sauders lap of
14.490 set fast time in
NRA qualifying. Dallas
Hewitt, Hannagan and
Dustin Daggett won
heat races. Luke Hall
won the B-Main.
The Kings Royal
will be broadcast on
SPEED TV on July
28th at 2 p.m. It will re-
air on July 29th at 1:30
a.m. and on July 30th
at 8 a.m. All times are

Eldora Speedway
hosts the USAC
National Sprint cars
and celebrates their
partnership with a special 50-lap
feature on July 28, honoring the
50th anniversary of USACs first
appearance at the historic track. A
minimum $10,000 payout awaits
the winner of the feature. The
National Racing Alliance Sprint
Invaders and Eldora stock cars
will also be in action. Tickets for
the Summer Sprint Car Shootout

ON GOING TRAGEDY AT
UNHAPPY VAllEY

We do not have many true heroic
figures in football and now perhaps the
story of our finest is ending like a Greek
tragedy. Joe Paterno appeared to be the
best example of what was good in big
time collegiate football. He apparently
believed fair play, academic excellence,
hard work, and true character could
produce consistent winners and even
national championships. Football
players at Penn State, no matter how
successful, played for the team and did
not seek personal glory. Unlike other
universities, players did not wear their
names on the back of their jersey when
playing for Paterno and Penn State.
Perhaps most impressive was the fact
he did not do this for a few years at one
institution before jumping ship at the
first opportunity for more money or
better athletes. Joes coaching career
was measured in decades not single
seasons and he chose to live those very
successful years in a modest home in a
college town where he could walk to
work daily.
Paterno, like a Greek heroic
icon, had a fatal flaw. He knowingly
encouraged the concealment of child
molestation activities involving his
principal assistant coach. Failure to
report potential abusive incidents
involving minors is about as serious a
breach of duty as exists in the people
business. It may well get one fired or
jailed. Joe Paterno apparently made
a terrible mistake, but I personally
would like to understand his official
and perceived duties at Penn State. He
was the head college football coach
with more longevity and potential
influence than any other coach, but did
he hire or have major approval rights in
the hiring of his superiors, particularly
his Athletic Director, University
Vice President, and President. In
theory, football head coaches should
be recruiting student athletes,
supervising assistant coaches, and
teaching kids. Superiors by definition
are charged with the supervision of
employees. If one comes up with a
bad idea or action at work, one should
expect his superiors to supervise and
say, No this is wrong.
Paterno made a very poor
decision. It is unfortunate he is not
alive to explain his actions. It is also
unfortunate that no one helped him in
this matter. Just perhaps his age and
culture may have been a factor. once
my mother, who was then in her late
60s, had just watched a TV talk show,
and asked me if there really was this
homosexual thing?
I read that in ancient Egypt during
the reigns of the Pharaohs, it was not
unusual for a new administration
to attempt to wipe the name of his
predecessor from existence. At that
time it meant removing carvings in
stone and destroying monuments.
The new administration at Penn State
must now decide if the Paterno statue
near the football stadium will go
and if sufficient house clearing has
already been done in the University
administration.

As part of State of the Hearts
Get Teed UP FoRE State of the
Heart Hospice golf outing Friday,
August 10 in Portland, the non-
proft agency is holding a raffe
to help raise funds in conjunction
with the outing. Four gift baskets,
each containing items worth over
$100 each, will be raffed off in
the next several weeks leading up
to the golf outing.
Were already getting inter-
est in purchasing raffe tickets,
explained Christena Subler, a
State of the Heart employee who
is coordinating the raffe. She has
solicited businesses in the various
communities served by State of
the Heart and gotten gifts for the
baskets. Each one has a theme.
She has wrapped them in a color-
ful display basket.
Tickets for the basket raffe
are $1 for one chance and fve
tickets for $6. If you purchase
several tickets, you can mix and
match your tickets depending on
which basket you would like, she
explained. The baskets will be on
display in the agencys Greenville
offce the week of July 16. The
baskets will be at the Coldwater
offce the week of July 23, and
in the Portland offce the week of
July 30 until the date of the outing.
The raffe is open to staff members
and to the general public.
To purchase a ticket, visit
the Greenville offce at 1350 N.
Broadway; the Coldwater offce at
230 W. Main St., and the Portland
offce at 1237 W. State Rd. 67 near
WalMart on W. Votaw St.
Each basket has a theme, Sub-
ler explained. The baskets are all
unique with a variety of items.
one basket, donated by Grilliot
Alignment of Greenville, has a va-
riety of Starbucks coffees, mugs,
and gift certifcates. Another bas-
ket is designed to pamper your-
self, Subler said. It has a variety
of lotions and gels, massage and
pedicure certifcates. One basket
is titled A Day at the Salon, and
it includes a massage, VIP hair cut
and style, styling gels and aides.
This was donated by A Cut Above
in Portland. Another basket is con-
sidered a Grillers Paradise as
it contains grilling utensils, vari-
ous spices and seasonings, and 20
pounds of ground beef.
It was fun putting these bas-
kets together, Subler said. I
think it will help make our golf
outing a great fund raiser for State
of the Heart.
This is the frst year for State of
the Heart to hold a golf outing in
Portland. It will be at the Portland
Golf Club. Proceeds will provide
care for patients who need hospice
services but lack the funds to pay
for the care. The agency also plans
to use a portion of the proceeds to
purchase grief support materials
for school offcials in Jay County
schools.
Registration for the tournament
is at 10:30 a.m. with a shotgun start
at noon. The outing is open to all
golfers, stated Ryan Gathard, Fund
Development Director for State of
the Heart. The format is best ball
scramble. The cost is $200 per
team, and the cost for sponsoring
a hole is $100.
Were excited about our frst
golf outing in Portland and look
forward to having many in the
community support our cause
for patient care and for placing
the grief support materials in Jay
County schools, Gathard said.
For more information about the
golf outing, to sign up, or spon-
sor a hole, please call Ryan at

Witness
By Nora Roberts

Reviewed by
Skeet Wolters

Nora Roberts is a favorite author
of the library and I, too, enjoy most
of her novels. Witness is no excep-
tion. I shy away from trilogies, as
they can often be repetitious. Witness
stands alone well and was an inter-
esting read. I learned of the witness
protection program and that nothing
is above the law.
Elizabeth Fitch is a very intel-
ligent 16 year old born to a single
mother through artificial insemina-
tion. This mother is a medical pro-
fessional in the full sense of the word
with little real concern for Elizabeth
other than breeding and raising the
perfect child. The woman is in total
control until the start of Elizabeths
freshmen summer when she rebels
for the first time ever. This one night
changes her life as she and her new-
found friend get involved with mem-
bers of the Russian mafia and she
witnesses the death of her friend. She
flees the local authority that was con-
spiring with the mafia. She changes
her name to Abigail Lowry, moves to
a small town in Arkansas, and leads a
quiet, unconventional life.
Enter Chief of Police, Brooks
Gleason, who takes a professional
and personal interest in her. With to-
days advanced technology, he slowly
finds out who she is and wants to help
her live a normal and social life in his
small town. Elizabeth is a very intel-
ligent lady who has developed an in-
tense security system for her country
home and is an excellent marksman
with the many guns she carries and
maintains close to her at all times.
Roberts spins an interesting plot
that will keep your attention and
cheering for the new life of Elizabeth
Fitch. I question how this mother
walked away to never again look for
her daughter or seem to care. This
not natural in my book. The library
has Witness in regular and large print
along with the C/D audio.
Nora Roberts fans will be please
to know that the library also has the
second book, The Last Boyfriend: of
the Inn Boonsboro Trilogy shelved in
the new book section. Happy Read-

Kurt Huelsman, St Henrys Pool
Manager and Summer recreation
Director, was the guest speaker at the
June 5th meeting. There are 15 life
guards at the pool this year. Some have
been there for several years, which is a
big help to Kurt. He said this is a great
summer job for girls. To be a life guard,
one has to be certified by the Red Cross
and Kurt is a certified life guard. Kurt
is in charge of the entire park, including
the rentals. Maintenance is done every
day at 7:00 a.m., including cleaning the
filters. In the morning the swim and dive
teams come in. There are also group
swimming lessons and water aerobics,
so it is being used all the time before it
is open to the public. There is not much
down time until the pool closes at 9:00
p.m.. Health inspectors come and they
work with them as well as the Mercer
County Health Department. The water
is heated at 80 degrees and tested three
times a day on the four different pools.
They also offer showers to Eldora race
fans. Kurt is a graduate of UD and will
coach St. Henry girls basketball.
Brother Nick Renner from St
Charles was the guest speaker at the
June 12th meeting. Bro. Nick has been
in Mercer County now for 50 years.
He started with 18 acres of no-tilling at
Burkettsville. He said cover crops help
maintain soil productivity. The goal is
to keep the soil in balance with mother
nature.
Ron Gelhaus, St Henrys
Administrator, was the guest speaker
at the June 19th meeting. Ron has had
this position now for one year. The
amphitheater, which is now complete
was a fun project. This is a great asset
to the community. Flyers containing
info on the upcoming events there
this summer were passed out. They
are working on the culvert on Eastern
Avenue. Plans are to work on the west
retention pond and eventually they want
to expand all the ponds in town. They
also want to add more sidewalks. There
will be no asphalting done this year.
The pool is the hot topic. The council
members are working on this and it may
be put on the ballot this fall. It is up to
the public to decide. If the resolution is
passed, they will start in August, 2013
and be open on Memorial Day, 2014.
Ron had a conceptual drawing of a
new pool, which would be in the same
location but larger in size. The current
pool will be 40 years old in 2015 but
it is still functional. They need support
from the community and the pool is an
important part of the community.
