SomeclaimedthatTeslawasagenius,butatroubleone,whosepsychoses andirrationalbehaviorcompromisedhisscientificdiscoveries.Othersspread rumorsthathewasnothingmorethanacharlatan,usinghisscientificgrants wastefullyonoverblownprojectsthatwouldneverwork,anddidnotdeserveto seethelightofday. Despitealltheopposition,Teslamovedforwardunfetteredforyears, succeedinginmanyregards.This,unfortunately,wasntthecaseofhisgreatest invention:theTeslafreeenergygenerator. Designedasawaytogatherandtransferenergywirelesslytomultiple devices,theTeslageneratorwasconceivedyearsbeforetheadventofjet engines,wirelessInternet,orInternetatall,forthatmatter. directcurrentempire,andfurthercementhimselfastheselfproclaimedKingof Electricity. WhatEdisondidnotexpectwasTeslastenacity,andthepuregeniusthat laywithin,slumberinglikeasleepingdragon. Teslatoiledforyears,workingagainstThomasEdisontomake alternatingcurrentthedefactopowersupplyfortheUnitedStates,andhe succeeded(formoreinformation,readTheTeslaConspiracy).Thatwouldforever behisgreatestandmostwellknowninvention.

Notasmallfeatbyanymeans,theunfortunatetruthwasthatTeslawas capableofsomuchmore.Unwillingtocontinuetoilinginthemediocrityof

knownelectricalengineering,TeslabeganworkinginforaysEdisoncouldnever competewithhim.Teslabegantoimaginebizarreandamazingcontraptions.He begandesigningdrawingandthinkingofcreationsthatcouldonlybedescribed asmonumentallyparadigmshifting.Teslasdesignsforthedaywereconsidered asfuturisticasDaVincisflyingmachineinitstime.Teslawasaheadofthecurve. Themostnotoriousoftheseideaswasthegenerator.Teslasdesign documentssuggestedthatthegeneratorcouldmerelysitoutsideallday,and collectenergy,whichcouldthenbeusedonanydeviceconnectedtothe generator.

 Confidentinhisintelligence,abilityandsheergenius,Teslatookthe concepttoJohnPierpontMorgan(hischieffinancieratthetime),andaskedfor fundingtodevelopthesystem. Morganbeganfinancingtheprojectinearly1900,financingbothits researchanddesign,aswellastheconstructionofitslimitedtestinfrastructure. Alreadyinvolvedinmakingmoneyfromelectricalcurrentuse,Morganhoped thisnewwirelesssystemwouldbeafantasticwaytomakeevenmoremoney. WhenMorganfinallyvisitedtheNewYorktowersitetocheckonTeslas progresswiththenewsystem,hefamouslyaskedhimwherehecouldattachthe meter. TeslassilentlackofresponsewasenoughforMorgan.Ifhecouldnot makemoneyontheproject,thenitwouldn'tbemadeatall.Hestartedbypulling hisfinancingimmediatelyandorderingthedeconstructionoftheentire infrastructure.HethenspreadfalserumorsaboutTeslasreliabilityand charactertootherpotentialinvestors,inhopesthattheprojectwouldbeentirely scrapped.Withnoinvestmentinflux,thefreewirelesspowerprojectwoulddie quickly,andMorganwouldhavenoreasontoworryaboutcompetingwithafar lessattractiveandagingpowersupplysystem. Teslasdreamtofotherdevicesafterthat,andconstructedagreatmany prototypes,buthisdreamoffreewirelessenergyfortheentireworlddiedthere. Firmground.Thismaybeanobrainertoseasonedbuilders,butthis isanincrediblyimportantpiecetokeepinmind.Yourdeviceisgoing toendupbeingaround16fttall,andstrongwinds,precipitationand otherunforeseencircumstancescanleadtoseriousdamageifthebase foryourdeviceisntsecure.Looseearth,sandorliquidbasesarea definiteno. 2. Levelground.Muchlikethepreviouspoint,youwanttomakesure thatyourdeviceisinlevelground.Aslightgradewontpresentahuge problem,butasevereslopewillcompromisethestabilityofthe device.Sincethebaseismeanttobeburied,asteepslopemight compromisethedepthofoneormoresides. 3. Proximitytootherobjects.Makesurethedeviceisplacedaway fromclotheslines,fences,yourownhouse,andawayfromother peoplesproperty.Again,thiswillbelargelya16ftpole,andother objectscanpulldown,bend,orcompletelydestroyapartorthewhole ofthedevice. 4. AvoidFlammableMaterials.Whenconstructingyourcircuit,besure tostayawayfromflammablesurfacesorobjectsinthevicinity.Youll noticethatdespiteworkingonawoodenbenchwhenconstructingthe circuitinourvideo,thereisapaneofglassplacedovertopforsafety. Linoleumcountertopisnotabadeither,andneitherisametal surface.Consultthesafetyinstructionsforyoursolderingkitbefore starting. 2. Keepyourworkareaclear.Diodesandcapacitorsarefarsmaller thanyoumightbelieve.Keepingacleanandorganizedworkbench couldmeanthedifferencebetweenawasteofmoneyandastressless project.Keepyourcapacitorsanddiodesorganizedandseparated. Thelastthingyouwanttodoispermanentlysoldertwoofthewrong capacitorstogether,ruiningtheprojectentirely. 3. Keephandsawayfromthesolderingiron.Aselementaryasit sounds,solderingironsgetincrediblyhotwhentheyreon.As temptingasitmaybetoflickaneyelashorsomedirtoffthepointof thesolderingiron,donotdosowhileitison.Unplugtheiron,and leaveittocool.Thencleanitwithapapertowel. 4. Dontrestthesolderingirononthetable.Solderingstationswill comewithastandtoplacetheironinwhenyourenotusingit,but inexpensivestarterkitsmightnot.Itisimportantthatyoubuyastand beforeundertakinganysolderingtask.Youmaynotwantto constantlyplugandunplugthesolderingironifyouresimplyputting itdownforaquicksecondtobendacontactorpickupanother

INDOORCONSTRUCTION HowtoSolder Beforeundertakingthisproject,itsimportanttounderstandhow solderingworks.Ifyouareaseasonedsolderingexpertandarefamiliarwith solderingelectricalcomponentstogether,feelfreetoskipthischapterofthe guide.However,ifthisisallnewtoyou,itsimportantthatyoureadand understandthis. Solderinginvolvesyoursolderingiron,thesolderitself,andthe componentsyouwanttoconnect.Mostcomponentswillhaveexcesswiringat eachend,anditisrecommendedthattheseendsbecutoffbeforeapplying solder.Foranexampleofhowtodothis,watchtheincludedvideoguide.

Whensolderingparts,itsimportanttosecureyourpartsinsomefashion toavoidasloppysolderingjob.Oncethepartsaretouchingeachother,holdthe

spoolofsolderovertheconnectionwithapieceoutstretched.Touchthesolder totheconnectiontomakesurethepartsarehot,andapplythesolderslowlyto theconnection.Oncethesoldertakes,removetheiron,andthenthesolder.If thesolderrefusestosticktoeitherpart,theymightrequireacleaning.Dirt particleswillinterferewiththeadhesionprocess. Cleaningisaseasyasbrushingcontactsandtheirontipofyoursoldering ironwithafiberglassfilamentbrush.Trytokeepyourhandsawayfromthe contactsuntilafterthesoldertakes,asoilsordirtonyourhandscanalso compromisethesoldersadhesionprocess.

Solderingisnotjustascience.Itsalsoanart.Solderingpartstogetherwill takepractice,anditsprobablybeenaverylongtimesincehighschoolscience class.Mostofthecapacitorsanddiodesyouwillbebuyingforthisprojectwill comeinpacksfarlargerthanwhatisrequired.Usetheseexcesspartsas

solderingpractice.Learnhowtoproperlysoldercleanconnectionsbefore undertakingtheproject. Ratherthanasafetyprecaution,thisistoavoidfrustration.Nothingis moreannoyingthanmakingacircuitunusablebecauseofashoddysolderingjob. Whenapplyingsolder,makesurenottoaddtoomuch.Toomuchcan causeshortcircuitswithadjacentconnections,andisawasteofvaluablesolder. Toolittlesoldercouldcompromisethestrengthofyourconnection,anditcould fallapart.Applyingjusttherightamountisnotanexactscience,andwillonly comewithpractice. Remember:PRACTICE,PRACTICE,PRACTICE.Solderingisanart,andall artistsneedtopracticetheirtrade.Dontbecomeimpatient,andimmediately startonyourproject.Youwillbethankfulwhenyoureasolderingexpert. ConstructingtheCircuit Allofthestepsoutlinedinthissectionareonthevideo,soifyoufeelyou areamorevisualperson,thevideowillbeanindispensibletoolforyou. However,especiallywhenbuildingyourveryfirstcircuit,itsimportanttowatch thevideoandreadthetextinstructionsbeforemovingontothenextstep. Itsalwaysagoodideatotakeyourtime,especiallyifthisisyourfirst circuitryproject.Thiswillnotonlygiveyoutimetoproperlycheckyourwork, butitwillgiveampletimeforyoursoldertosetcompletely.

1. Startbyshapingtheconnectionsoftheceramic0.1microfarad capacitorssoyoucansolderthemtogether.Fortheexactshape, checktheincludedvideoguide. 2. Soldertwoofthecapacitorstogether,andthendothesamefor twomorecapacitors. 3. Solderthesetwoconnectionstogethersothatyouhavealineof ceramiccapacitorssolderedtogether. 4. Next,letstestthediodes.Dialyourmultimetertodiodecheck mode.Thediodeswillhavealineoneoneside.Thisisthenegative side.Makesurethenegativeleadisconnectedtothenegative contact,otherwisethemultimeterwillnotdisplayanything. 5. Next,solderonediodeonthepositivesidetotheveryfirst capacitorinyourline. 6. Next,solderthenegativesideofanotherdiodetothelastcapacitor inyourline. 7. Finally,solderthefreeleadsoneachofthediodestoeachotherto getaflowertypeshape,asshownbelow:

8. Soldertheotherdiodeswhereyousolderedyourfirstdiodesto theirrespectivecapacitors.Thesediodeswillthenconnecttothe largercapacitorsfartherdown. 9. Onceyourlargercapacitorsaresolderedtotheouterdiodes, soldertheotherconnectorsoftheselargecapacitorstotheinside diodes.Checkthevideoguidetodoublecheckyourwork. 10. Makeasecondcircuitidenticaltotheoneyoujustmade.

11. Taketwopiecesof36inchwire,andstripbothends,sothatthey canbesolderedtoeithercircuit. 12. Solderthewireoneithersideofyourfirstcircuit,wheretheouter diodesconnectwiththelargecapacitorsatthebottom. 13. Soldertheotherendofeachwiretothesameplaceonthesecond circuit.Doublecheckyourworkwiththevideoguide. 14. Yourcircuitiscomplete.Makesuretochecktocheckyourfinished circuitwiththepicturebelow:

 15. Next,taketwomorelengthsofwireandtieoneendofeachtothe circuit,nearthelargecapacitorsononeofthecircuits..Theother endofeachwirewillbewherewecollecttheenergyforour generator.

OUTDOORCONSTRUCTION Buildingtheantenna Nowthatwevecompletedthecircuitportionofthedevice,itstimeto moveontotheoutdoorportionoftheconstructionprocess.Whenworking outside,itspreferableifyoucanperformthefollowingtasksinacloseproximity toyourfinallocation. 1. DrillawholestraightthroughyourPVCpipingnearthetop.Loop thewirethroughbothholes,andtwistittoformaloop.Securethe wirerunningdownthesideofthepipewithelectricaltape. 2. Next,tiethreeanchorstothecenterofthepole,tomakesurethat thepoleremainsstandingincaseofinclementweather.

3. Buryasteelpipeatleastafootintotheground,andplaceyourPVC pipingovertop.Thiswillactasyourbase. 4. SecuretheanchorropeyoutiedontothePVCpipingpreviouslyto makesurethepolestaysinplace. 5. Buryyourcopperpipeatleast1footintotheground,anddrilla holethroughthepipenearthetop.Thiswillserveasthe groundingforthedevice.Takeyourgroundingwire,andloopit throughbothholes,andtwistittosecure.

6. Nowitstimetotestthecircuit,andseehowmuchvoltageweget. Stripthegroundingwireononesideandconnectittothetopof thecircuit,betweentwoofthesmallerceramiccapacitors. 7. ConnectthewirefromthePVCpipingantennatothesecond circuit,betweenthetwocenterceramiccapacitors.Usepliersto twistthewirearoundyourcircuittoavoidinjury.

 8. Electricitywillbegintobuildinthecapacitors.Connectyour multimeterandcheckyourvoltage.Youwillnoticethatthevoltage continuestoriseovertime.Leavethecircuitconnectedtothe antennaforanotherfiveminutes,andcheckagainwithyour antenna.

9. Connectthewiresyoupreviouslysolderedtothecircuitintoa chargecontroller.

10. Connectyourbatterytothechargecontrolleraswell. 11. Fromhere,oncethebatteryhasbeencharged,connectthebattery toapowerinverter,sothatyoucangetusablepowerfromthe systemyouvejustputtogether. 12. Fromthepowerinverter,youcanchargeanydevicewithaplug, includingacellphone.Grabyourcellphoneadaptor,andplugit intothepowerinverter.Ifthephonenotifiesyouthatitischarging, yoursystemisnowsuccessfullyrunning!
