Post Traumatic Stress Disorder: A Wartime Disease

By Joe Olvera , 2012

Rafael Hernando, a
combat war veteran, wants for the U.S. to do more for young men and women suffering from PTSD, because, according to him, they are not being treated and many of the sufferers are homeless, living under bridges and living with war-driven anxieties. One of the major problems is that, for years, it wasnt recognized as a disease, Hernando, 63, said. Many of us vets, who fought in Vietnam, came home to a nation that hated us for doing our duty, for fighting in an unpopular war which caused so much turmoil at home. Some of us never really got over the hatred that was spewed on us, with people calling us baby killers and other horrible epithets. While those who fought in our most recent wars, Iraq and Afghanistan received a better welcome, many of them still havent reconciled their military service with civilian life.

Rafael Hernando
my daily life trigger my darkest memories. The way I fight my PTSD is to keep busy. Even though Im in a wheelchair, that doesnt stop me. I stay active, but PTSD has affected my whole life, my relationships, and whatever. There is a disconnect concerning jobs, school, and life in general. Hernando says that, as a veterans advocate, he speaks to young vets and he sees many of them walking around as if they dont belong. He said he speaks to many vets who are living under bridges, and while many of them are Vietnam vets, hes seeing more of them from more recent wars. Statistics from the

federal government and from the Veterans Administration bear him out. He said the military is not doing enough to remedy the situation. He doesnt totally believe in medications, but, by combining meds with professional counseling, progress can be made. One of the most effective medications is called selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors used to make a sufferer less worried or sad. And what is the VA doing about it? Not much by some experts reckoning. In an article by Courtney Mabeus on July 15, 2012, in the Frederick News Post, both the feds and the VA admit that the problem is not going away, but, theyre working on it. Efforts to team up to study drugs that could help resolve the issue, are slow and will take years for the FDA to approve them. Providers have found certain drugs help aspects of PTSD, but, nothing has been studied to the FDA level, said Major Gary Wynn, an officer at Fort Detrick. Only two drugs, paxotene, known as paxil, and Zoloft are approved for treating PTSD. Although the Defense Department and the VA are making strides in identifying and treating people with PTSD, both need to do much more to improve access to health care. Of the 2.6 million active-duty soldiers, reservists and national guard members who have deployed to Iraq and Afghanistan since 2001, an estimated 20 percent have or may develop PTSD. A total of 476,515 vets with PTSD received treatment in VA medical centers in 2011.

get worse, with more suicides and more anxiety-ridden young men and women who cant cope with life, Hernando said. Even though I have PTSD, Im not really

being treated for it. I dont receive VA benefits for that problem, just for losing my leg in combat. I still get up at 5:30 every morning, just because I want to see the sun come up every day. Even though I have tried to get treatment and benefits for it, the VA says I cant possibly have it because Ive managed to survive for more

than 40 years. They just dont know the problems Ive had to overcome. Im not too worried about myself, however, Im more concerned with the young vets, those young men and women who sacrificed their lives to insure our freedom. They are the ones with whom we should be concerned.

Post Traumatic Stress Disorder, or PTSD, is a severe anxiety disorder that can develop after exposure to any event that results in psychological trauma, overwhelming the individuals ability to cope. Diagnostic symptoms
for PTSD include re-experiencing the original trauma through flashbacks or nightmares or difficulty falling asleep, anger, and hyper-vigilance. Hernando, who was in combat in Vietnam in 1964, lost his right leg when he triggered a land mine. He still remembers seeing his leg flying off in one direction, while he went in another. Even after all these years, I still have nightmares about the incident, Hernando said. I suffer from flashbacks and many things in

More than half the country is experiencing drought conditions. El Paso and southern New Mexico is included in this statistic even though we have had a very good early start to our monsoon. As of this writing, we are just a bit above normal with our rainfall so far this year. Let's hope it continues. In the meantime, the National Climate Data Center indicates our national temperature for the first six months of the year was 52.9 degrees which is 4.5 degrees above average. We can blame this on the jet stream. The jet stream is what directs our weather and storms and it has stayed well to our north keeping the colder air from making its way south. Not only has this kept many of us warmer than normal but also drier than normal. Farmers throughout the country are seeing their crops dry out as they beg for rain. More than one-thousand counties in 26 states have been declared a disaster area and that hurts all of us. Agricultural experts warn that food prices continue to go up and will only get worse. The price of corn is now up just over a third. Corn is an ingredient in many food items and drinks. Not only do we need to worry about corn but higher prices for hamburgers and steaks will also go up as feed for cows is also hard to come by and becoming very expensive. The exact impact of this drought won't really be felt until September when farmers get out in the field to harvest. Most farmers will not feel a huge impact on their pocketbooks since many of them take out crop insurance to protect them from natural disasters. But for consumers, there's no insurance to rely on; all we can do is try and take advantage of sales and clip coupons.

Public Encouraged to Take Preventative Measures
El Paso, Texas The City of El Pasos Environmental Services Department is taking precautions to protect the community against mosquito-borne diseases by controlling the mosquito population now that monsoon rain has arrived in El Paso. Code Compliance inspectors assigned to Vector Control will be checking and aggressively treating areas across El Paso County continuing where mosquitoes are likely to breed, such as drainage ditches and canals and other low-lying areas. Residents can also help prevent and reduce the mosquito population. Environmental Services encourages residents to:

In my life, musical tastes have evolved

When I started life as a
youngster in the old barrio of Rivera and Estrella, music filled my life from the inception. My siblings and I were Chicanos, so our musical tastes ran the bilingual gamut. My father, of course, had been born in Mexico so his first love was Mexican music. To boot, he was part of a trio who played in cantinas on Alameda Avenue for money. As I grew and developed, I was introduced to such singers as Pedro Infante, Jorge Negrete, Antonio Aguilar, Jose Aceves Mejia - or as we used to say, Jose Aveces MeHacia LOL. The Mission Theater on Alameda, across Coffee Joes was the site where I learned to tap my toes to Mexican Rancheras. That theater was bilingual as well, so we could view movies with Lucha Villa, Sarita Garcia, Maria Felix, Lola Beltran, and movies starring Bela Lugosi as Dracula, Boris Karloff as Frankenstein, and such stalwarts as Gene Autry, Roy Rogers and Lash Larue. My father, who didnt speak much English, was always amazed that we could understand both idioms. While Mexican music was my first love, as I grew and evolved, however, I started liking such singers as Ricky Nelson can you believe it? I also liked Elvis, even though there were rumors that he had said something about Chicanas to the effect that he would rather kiss a dog than a Mexican. I never believed he said that, but, most Chicanos and Chicanas hated him. But, not me. Why, I even liked Pat Boone. Pat Boone????????? Yes, Pat Boone. I once bought with my shoe-shining money a pair of white shoes with the red soles which he made popular. I got into plenty of fights because I dared to wear such shoes openly. Later, my smooth cousin, Manny Segura, and I, would sneak into Rustys Place where we listened to such greats as Fats Domino, Little Richard, Arthur Wheeler, and others. You see, we were bilingual, and we were color-blind, so it didnt really matter if the stars were white, black, or brown. We enjoyed them all, and we could dance to them all, whether the music was boogie, rock and roll, cumbias, corridos, or mambos. My brother Dario Junior was a mambo-dancing fool, with all the girls clamoring to dance with him. Then came the Beatles, or as we called them, Los Biroles. By then I was in the Air Force, stationed at Travis AFB, Califa. I didnt initially like the Beatles when they burst on the scene with the long hair and their Yeah, yeah, yeahs. But, they grew on me, especially when I was discharged and I joined the Hippie Movement. Oh, yeah, I was a hippie with the long hair, the patched clothes and the living on three acres of farm land in Socorro. Once they came out with their album Sgt. Peppers Lonely Hearts Club Band, they captivated me with such hippie anthems as Lucy in the Sky With Diamonds, When I Turn 64, and other psychedelic classics. With the Beatles, of course, came the Rolling Stones, Neil Young, Steppenwolf, and many others who kept us hopping and singing along. That Hippie era was one of the most enlightening eras of my life, of anybodys life. I remember when I was attending Columbia University in New York City, and had gone to Plattsburg, NY with my buddy, Leo. Now, Leo was a Hippie before the word became popular. He had dropped in on me after having hitchhiked from El Paso to Canada. And, he was on his way back. With his frizzy hair, beard and mustache, he surprised me. In fact, I almost hitch-hiked with him because I was scared of going to Columbia. But, no, I decided to tough it out at the prestigious school. Plattsburgh was country-living and the place where we stayed was a Hippie paradise. It was beautiful, green, but cold in summer. I tried to look like Leo, but, I was too square, too straight-laced to be a Hippie. I tried, but I didnt quite make it. I was Joe College trying to be something I was not. Then came my country music period. I had always loved country, enjoying such stars as Patsy Cline, Kenny Rogers, Willie Nelson, Merle Haggard, and others who played music that was known to Chicanos and Mexicans as Rancheras Gavachas. Kenny Rogers was my favorite, and I even got the chance to interview him on one of his visits to El Paso. Country music had a haunting quality to it, which attracted me. Then, also, there was Vicente Fernandez. He came on the scene with his wide-ranging vocal talents. He blew us off our chairs with such hits as El Rey, and many others. He not only sang, but he acted in movies becoming El Idolo de Mexico. And, then, of course, theres Juan Gabriel a Juarez kid who started by singing for pesos aboard city buses. He kept at it, composing his own songs and music. I guess, now, in my old age, Ive come full circle. Ive gone through all those changes, evolved through the years as a lover of all types of music. But, my all-time favorite, the one who still serenades me with his magical voice is none other than Jose Alfredo Jimenez. I used to memorize his songs, playing his records over and over until I had them down. Then I would sing in the shower or in the car with my frog-like voice where nobody could hear me, where nobody could criticize me. In fact, I still have some of his tapes and CDs. Who can ever forget tunes like Muequita Negra, Llego Borracho el Borracho, A Mis Aos, estoy Enamorado, and other spine-tinglers. He may have died years ago, but, through his music, he lives. Orale! Certain types of mosquitoes can carry West Nile Virus, which can be deadly to humans and horses. Residents should wear long sleeves and long pants and use mosquito repellent containing DEET if they plan to be outdoors during dawn and dusk hours. So far this year, two batches of mosquitoes collected by Vector Control have tested positive for the West Nile virus. Last year, five pools of mosquitoes tested positive for the virus.

Residents are encouraged to report mosquito breeding by calling Environmental Services at 599-6290.

Each year, 500 billion to 1 trillion plastic bags are doled out worldwide. That's more than 1 million bags per minute. More than half that amount 380 billion plastic bags are used in the U.S. alone. About 1 percent of these bags are recycled, and about 10 percent are reused. Many of these bags wind up as litter. Plastic bags have been dubbed the "national flower" in South Africa because so many can be seen flapping from fences and caught in bushes. Plastic bags also have become the most common man-made item seen by sailors at sea. If tied together, these bags would form a chain long enough to go around the world 37 times. These ubiquitous little buggers are wreaking havoc on the environment. Plastic bags photodegrade, meaning they break down into smaller and smaller toxic bits, contaminating soil and waterways and entering the food chain. Hundreds of thousands of sea turtles, whales and other marine mammals mistake bits of bags for food. On land, many cows, goats and other animals die from ingesting plastic bags while foraging for food.

DEAR ABBY by Abigail Van Buren

GRANDMA SHARES BATH WITH GIRL AND LANDS HERSELF IN HOT WATER
DEAR ABBY: What do you think about a grandmother getting into a Jacuzzi with her 6-year-old granddaughter? This has caused a big rift in our family. At a large recent family gathering, my daughter couldn't accommodate all of us sleeping at her home, so some of us rented rooms at a nearby motel. My son-in-law's parents took my granddaughter "Charise" to their room to spend the night. The bathroom had a Jacuzzi tub in it, and Grandma and Charise bathed in it together. When they told my daughter about it the next day, she became upset because she thought it was inappropriate for an adult to be in the tub with her young daughter. My daughter's mother-inlaw said she was not ashamed of her body and she refused to apologize to my daughter for what happened. My son-in-law has sided with his mother. What do you think? -- SHOCKED IN CINCINNATI housewife who takes care of his mother who lives with us (another story). I can't go anywhere. I'm at home all day, every day, except when his mother needs to go to the doctor. He refuses to get another car because he's "afraid" I'm going to meet someone else if I go out. I'm at my wits' end. Howard doesn't like my friends -- the three that I do have. He has taken church away from me because he believes a husband and wife should go to church together, and he doesn't, therefore neither should I. He's verbally abusive and manipulative. I feel I can't do anything right, and he proclaims to be a perfectionist. Everything revolves around him and his likes, needs and wants. This is a second marriage for both of us. He admits that he's insecure. I love him, but I can't take this anymore. I want to leave, but I don't know how or where to begin. If I were to go home, I'd have nothing -- no home, no car, no job or money. We have no children together. What is your advice? -- TRAPPED IN THE SOUTHWEST DEAR TRAPPED: By now you must realize there is no way to assuage your husband's insecurity and need to control. No wonder this is his second marriage. I'm betting it won't be his last, either. Look at it this way: He has a housekeeper, a built-in caregiver for his mother and someone whose every move he can control. There are worse things than going home, starting from scratch and rebuilding your life. The first that comes to mind is continuing to live in a marriage like this one. So please, pick up the phone and ask your family to come and get you. And if you are afraid that he could become violent, call the National Domestic Violence Hotline. Recently, a cow was found dead in the streets of New Delhi, where cows are considered sacred. Indian media reported that it had some 35,000 plastic bags in its digestive system. Eight billion pounds of plastic bags, wraps and sacks enter the waste stream every year in the U.S. alone. Many bags collected for recycling never actually get recycled. Some are shipped off to developing countries with lax environmental laws that allow them to be incinerated, creating massive air pollution and soil degradation. Recycling centers are diminishing for plastic bags because it is not economically feasible to recycle bags. "It costs $4,000 to process and recycle one ton of plastic bags, which can then be sold on the commodities market for $32," says Jared Blumenfeld, director of San Francisco's Department of the Environment. San Francisco is the first major U.S. city to outright ban plastic bags. Ireland passed a "Plastax," which reduced bag consumption by 90 percent, saved more than 180,000,000 liters of oil and raised $9.6 million dollars for its "green fund." South Africa's bag tax appears on printed grocery store receipts to remind consumers how much money they could have saved by bringing their own bags. Taiwan expanded its bag ban to include disposable food containers. Bangladesh and India both implemented bag bans after discovering that the littered bags choked drainage ditches, causing flooding and casualties. (The Bangladeshi ban has coincidentally led to a revival of the jute bag industry and other sustainable alternatives.) Hong Kong has implemented a campaign of "No plastic bag, please," and prohibits retailers over a specified size from providing free bags. Voluntary bag limits have reduced plastic bags by 24 percent in one year in Australia. Ninety percent of Australia's major retailers charge customers for shopping bags and offer on-site recycling bins where

This is our civilization in decline, eating uncontrollably, unable to throw up to our leaders what needs to be done in the face of our current obesity crisis. playing sports to watching them on TV, but I did find myself riveted to the flat screen the other day, witnessing one of the most amazing athletic competitions I've ever seen.

The finals at Wimbledon? The

pre-Olympic trials for U.S. women's gymnastics? No, it was the Nathan's Famous Hot Dog Eating Contest the Super Bowl of competitive eating and I simply couldn't take my eyes off 42-year-old Sonya Thomas as she pounded down her 39th, 40th and 41st hot dog. It was a miracle! They must have been kosher. Sonya's gorging technique is the stuff of stars. Sonya crammed the hot dogs into her normal-size mouth with both hands, jumping up and down to move the megawad past her throat, down her legendary esophagus, into her amazing expandable stomach. The average human stomach is the size of two fists, so you've really got to hand it to Sonya whose nickname, by the way, is The Black Widow (I'm not sure why, but it's perfect for the web). By the time her 10 minutes were up, Sonya had shoved in 45 hot dogs, and let's not forget the 45 buns, which she dunked in water before sending them down the chute. Keeping it all down is part of the magic. The ability to relax your throat and expand your stomach to the size of a chateau in France is the hallmark of a competitive eater, I learned later. Competitive eaters do risk their stomachs exploding, but these guys and gals take their training very

are athletic, of average weight and, of course, nuts. Sonya, still jumping up and down, still digesting her huge victory, was very excited after her win. She's ranked fourth in the world a "multi-food sensation" who is also a world champion in crayfish eating and not only was this her second win in a row, it was a personal best. The woman who placed second only managed to eat 33 hot dogs and buns. Pathetic. Off camera, she was probably eating crow, while Sonya went on to explain the secret of her success. "It's all mental," she told the reporter from ESPN2. Sonya set a goal, pictured herself eating 45 hot dogs in 10 minutes, and then, in competition, did it for real. See how important goal-setting is? Visualization? See what you can learn on a hot summer's day just sitting at home watching wacky sports on ESPN2? I can hardly wait for the Olympics. After the female hot dog eaters competed, it was the guys' turn. A trim-looking fellow named

Joey Chestnut the favorite, who holds 27 world records won his competition by eating 65 hot dogs in 10 minutes, a jaw dropping 20 more than Sonya. According to information on the Nathan's website, each hot dog has 290 calories, 17 grams of fat and 710 milligrams of sodium. If my very rough calculations are correct, in 10 minutes Joey Chestnut consumed enough calories and suspicious nutrients to feed 1,000 youngsters in Texas who don't know where their next meal is coming from. Go Joey! I saw a picture of Champion Chestnut mixing it up with the

Passion, pride and drama are in store for the length of this transit, which lasts until August 22. ARIES (March 21-April 19). You'll lose yourself and find yourself many times in a lifetime. You may come to decide this week that it doesn't matter either way. Being "lost" or "found" is a matter of perception; it's merely an opinion you're having at the moment about yourself in regard to your surroundings. That opinion can always change. TAURUS (April 20-May 20). Your work will be intensely satisfying this week. You might feel funny talking about this when there are those around you who struggle to find enjoyment in their work. Don't worry. They will be inspired, rather than discouraged, by what you decide to share. GEMINI (May 21-June 21). Family relationships won't just happen naturally this week. Q: What should I do with a large collection of pictures? My late stepfather loved old sailing scenes. He left me 20 pictures, different sizes, but all matted and framed alike. We love them, but all our walls are taken. A: Hmmm. Considering how special the collection sounds, I suggest that you weigh the pros of vacating one of your walls in their honor. An arrangement of like artworks can make a wonderful statement in a room. Hung close together, they become almost architectural a trick I've often seen top professional designers employ to give a plain room better "bones." Another thought: Look for wall space in places you might not have thought of, like the stair hall in the photo we show here. Walls that were underachievers become an art gallery that makes it well worth climbing the stairs. Green Cooling
Cooling our homes in the summer can account for 45 percent of our home energy use, yet it could be reduced to 10 percent or less with a few thoughtful changes. Incorporating natural ventilation into your home will help you slash your energy use and carbon emissions drastically. Become aware of the seasonal wind patterns and the air flow around your home. Most areas have gentle breezes in the summer that can be directed into your house through landscaping and opening certain windows. If you don't know which direction the prevailing winds are coming from, hang laundry on the line and watch. Once you find the wind's direction, look at your landscape and geography. Are there trees and bushes that help to funnel the breeze toward your home, or are you parking your car right in the way? stats that turn them on automatically as the room warms. People will tolerate warmer temperatures as long as the air is circulating well around them. Ceiling fans work best in the summer when they are adjusted to pull the air up from the floor and circulate the cooler air. Switch the fan blade direction in the winter to have the fans push the warm air from the ceiling toward the floor. Ceiling fans use a fraction of the energy of an air conditioner, and can be more effective at cooling the whole space when well placed. Using ceiling fans in combination with natural ventilation can usually eliminate the need for air conditioning in a well-insulated, tightly sealed home. Twenty-five years ago, most architects and builders were beginning to incorporate passive solar into new structures. Our reliance on cheap oil trumped our common sense. Now we are seeing a resurgence in passive solar, as more people realize that we have to live more consciously. Part of conscious living is aligning our lives with the seasons and the region. Our survival once depended on knowing what local foods were in season, what local weather to expect and how to use seasonal landscaping to our benefit. Now our future generation's survival may depend on it. Shawn Dell Joyce is an award-winning columnist and founder of the Wallkill River School in Orange County, N.Y. Continued from page 10 As Howard writes, her client's collection of engraved hunt scenes "were of special importance to them, so I hung them on the staircase walls where they are enjoyed on a daily basis."

A couple of pointers for hanging such large collections:

Work out the arrangement on paper or on the floor in advance so you can preview how well it balances. Hang the art close enough together to create a cohesive grouping, say, with only a few inches of wall space showing between frames. Mix sizes and shapes within the arrangement, but include vertical and horizontal alignments. Be aware of the comparative visual "weights" of different-sized pictures. Here, for example, three smaller artworks equal two larger ones.

Q: I grew up in a house where my mom used wallpaper everywhere.

I'd come home from camp or college to find my room changed new wallpaper! But now I can't bring myself to pick a design I'd be living with forever. Is my "fear of commitment" weird? Curable?

Windows make a big difference in the temperature of a room. Keep

windows open on the side of your home facing the wind. If they are double hung, have both open so that cool air flows in the bottom window, and warm air flows out of the top. If you open windows on two opposite sides of your home, you create cross-ventilation. This is increased by opening bottom windows on the windward side and top windows on the opposite side.

A: Not weird at all. Why else would so many Americans live within plain white walls with all-beige furniture? They're simply afraid to make a commitment to real color.
Fear no more. You can have your colorful wallcovering and hedge your bets, too, thanks to an attractive family of creatives: artist C. Ashley Spencer, sister Lindsey Wood of Denver, and Lorre Lei Jackson, their mother, who lives in New Orleans.

Q: We're considering enrolling

our daughter in preschool this fall, but we're not sure about the idea of consigning her to an institutional setting for hours every week. What do you recommend?

PARENTS UNSURE IF CHILD IS READY FOR PRESCHOOL

Jim: When it
daughter into a genius or position her in the academic pack in order to "keep up with the Joneses," you should reconsider. This phase of her life needs to be characterized by a strong emphasis on relationships, and you can seriously jeopardize that if you push too hard too soon. In short, evidence suggests that children reap the greatest benefits, both educationally and socially, when they're protected from peer pressure and a formalized educational setting until they're mature enough to handle it. But there are also situations in which a good preschool might be valuable for a child. Those are questions only you can answer. Continues on next page

FOCUS ON THE FAMILY...

Q: My son is almost 20 years old and currently is in college. He has really struggled focusing on his classes the last two years and his grades have suffered in return. It is so important to me that he finishes college, but I don't know if it's appropriate for me to continue to monitor his work. When should a parent "let go" and let their adult child make his own mistakes? **

Juli: A lot of parents can identify with

your concerns. Ironically, as kids get older, we prepare them most effectively by letting go. You wrote that it is "so important to me that he finishes college." The key is whether or not it is important to him! Motivation is something that a parent and child can't both equally carry. When your son was little, it was your job to provide the motivation for him to do well and to try his best. Now that he's a young adult, he has to learn to be self-motivated. This means that you have to let go of your goals for him so he can discover his own -- which may or may not be graduating from college. You can help your son most by making a way for him to succeed in college and by not providing for him to fail. If he wants to go to college and puts forth a reasonable amount of effort, offer to pay for some of his college expenses. However, if he continues to get grades below what you know he should be getting, let him foot the bill or drop out and get a job. Instead of monitoring his work, set an objective standard (like a 3.0 GPA) that he should be able to maintain. The most valuable lesson you can teach your son is how he must learn to take responsibility for his own choices in life. This may mean giving up your dream of him receiving a college diploma, but it will give him the best chance of succeeding in all of his endeavors. ** (Jim Daly is president of Focus on the Family, host of the Focus on the Family radio program, and a husband and father of two. HELP YOUR PETS act like family GET ALONG Dont expect predators and prey to
By Gina Spadafori Universal Uclick Last month, after years of dreaming about it, I moved onto a small property that allowed me to have my horses live in my backyard instead of at a boarding barn. There is also room for my pet chickens and ducks, and of course, my dogs and my cat. All the animals get along, not only the farm animals, but also the more traditional household pets. This happens not because were all one happy family, but because I know enough about animals to realize that we are not family at all. In more than 30 years of writing about pets and a lifetime of living with them, I have shared my life with everything from hermit crabs to parrots to bunnies to snakes to horses and a lot in between, along with the more common pets of dogs and cats. For the most part, the interactions have been safe ones because I take care to keep them that way. Heres how:

cause you think theyre family. Theres

never a bird born who can truly see a cat as a brother, and never a dog who isnt fighting instinct to look at Brother Rabbit as an appetizer. And be aware that, in general, some breeds of dogs are highly unlikely to be safe around smaller pets. Even if you had a Jack Russell who ignored your daughters pet mouse, dont expect most Jack Russells to do so. Learn not only about the species of your pets and whats generally normal behavior in a pet household, but learn in particular about dog breeds and what they were bred for. A sight hound such as a greyhound may be very placid when everyones relaxed, but if your cat dashes across the yard, your hound may give chase. Respect the nature of things. Big dogs are born predators, even those whod seemingly never act on their genetic coding. Small dogs and cats are both predators and prey (although small dogs often dont seem to know it). Almost everything else we keep as a pet is viewed by some other animal as lunch. Thats especially true for rabbits and pet rodents, and true as well for parrots and

Dont anthropomorphize, but do generalize ... a little. You love all your pets, so
its natural to expect that your pets not only love you, but also feel at least warm toward each other. Let me put it this way: Even though you loved your siblings growing up, I bet there were times when you punched them, right? And youre the same species.

Dont expect pets to get along be-

backyard birds such as chickens and ducks. Its even true of many reptilian pets. When you mix predators and prey, you take chances. And you must never forget that. If you want a houseful of different species, look for those more likely to get along, or be determined to keep them forever apart. And even then, never take chances: Always oversee the interactions of your pets. The lion may lay down with the lamb from time to time, but thats not how the smart money bets on the interaction. Dont let predator and prey species such as cats and birds play together. Divide to prevent conquering. Good fencing may make good neighbors, but secure barriers have kept many a small pet alive. When you are not actively engaged in overseeing your pets, keep small ones such as rabbits and birds in their enclosures, and use baby gates to add a layer of protection by keeping dogs out of a room where small animals such as hamsters are in cages that can be easily broken into. In my case, I have my chickens and ducks in a spacious yard with good, standard fencing supplemented by electric fencing, not only to deter any wild predators, but also dogs my neighbors and even my own.

I love living with many kinds of animals Im adding a pair of pet goats after
Im well settled in but Im always aware that my pets would not choose to live with one another if I didnt make them do so. That means Im always careful to keep everyone safe, because ... were family, even if they dont think so!

Many people love to keep as pets the kinds of animals who would not get along well in the wild.

There are trance DJs who can rock a party, a club, a festival. And there are acts that can write songs that will bring out the goose bumps in you. But theres only one band that can do both: Above & Beyond. This three piece have remixed Madonna, won Essential Mix of the Year, and played to one million people in Rio de Janeiro. More importantly theyve written songs with the power and the melody to en-trance that one million-strong crowd, many of who were singing along, word for word.

ABOVE & BEYOND

Above & Beyond make music, pure and simple. That music happens to be electronic. And it connects. Were a group, says Above & Beyond founder Tony McGuinness. And what were trying to do is exactly do that, connect with people. You try and describe something in your own life, but in a way that will resonate with other people. When you see people singing along as passionately as they do, I guess youre getting it right. This makes Above & Beyond unique, not just in trance, but in popular music as well. We like to think of ourselves as songwriters first, says Paavo Siljamaki, who with Jono Grant makes up the trio. Thats our approach to music. The most challenging thing is to write a song that really touches the listener. Above & Beyond are not people who like to do things by halves. Witness their latest release, Anjunabeats 100 a collection of the very best tracks from their universally respected Anjunabeats label. The album also includes a DVD documentary, which captures the two shows the band played over Christmas and New Year 2007. First they travelled to Goa, India, the spiritual home of trance and their label Anjunabeats, to play an unforgettable sunset set at an open-air beach festival. Days later they flew to Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, another stronghold of the international trance sound, to headline a New Years Eve show on Barra de Tijuca beach in front of one million people. Dressed in the traditional white of Brazilian New Year, Above & Beyond captivated Rio with a set that was truly magical. Many of that crowd were fans who had travelled from all over Brazil. It was life-changing, says Tony. It was amazing to look out and see that many people. In some ways it was too big to comprehend! From club gigs in Eastern Europe to major festivals like Coachella in California, Above & Beyond have the ability to entrance audiences. Their music has grandeur and melody, but its edged with steel too. There are dark shadows but sweet moments too. And its bigger than any genre. Trance is too small a word for what they do. All three are experienced musicians who know their way around a studio without the need for engineers. Tony McGuinness was marketing director for Warner Brothers Records but for years previ-

ously was the guitarist/songwriter of cult indie band Sad Lovers & Giants. Asked to organize a remix of Chakras Home in 2000, he joined together with Jono Grant and Paavo Siljamaki - and Above & Beyond was born. By coincidence we ended up putting three individuals with complimentary and different talents into the mix, says Tony. Pete Tong quickly latched on to their talents: that debut remix for Chakra quickly reached Number One on the club charts. Its been a rollercoaster ride ever since. Jono Grant first discovered dance music when he borrowed his brother Jamess cassette of Paul Oakenfolds classic Goa mix and fell in love with its sweeping melodrama. He was already training as a classical pianist and played guitar. But that mix inspired him to start building his own studio, taking on part time jobs to buy bits and pieces of equipment. I managed to save up enough money from mowing the lawn to buy a drum machine, he laughs. By the time he arrived at Londons University of Westminster, he had a small, yet compact studio, which completely filled his tiny 4 x 2 metre university room. His first production was a remix of Strikes Top Five hit U Sure Do. Paavo had arrived at the same university from his native Finland, where he had already fallen in love with electronic music and composed music for theatre. Also classically trained on cello and piano, he

was studying music business. The two met one beery night in university halls and Jono proceeded to play his latest productions. I love this kind of music, Paavo told Jono. Let's write a track together. Jono loved the idea. They pooled their studio resources in one mad taxi dash, and Anjunabeats was born. It is now one of the most famous labels on the world stage. What audiences around the world also respond to is the professionalism and enthusiasm that Above & Beyond bring to their art. There is a warmth about the trio that people love. Tony is the one who gives it all on stage. Tony is really the rock n roll star of the whole crew. Hes the guy with the most experience, in life, in many things, says Paavo, and he still manages to be the kid of the group. Tony sums up his band members with equal enthusiasm. Jono is ambivalent about the incredible talent he has. He has a lot of energy, he is fearless when hes DJing and is always in a good mood. If Jonos contribution is an effortless musicality, says Tony, Paavo adds heart and soul. What he brings in a sense is how to bring out the emotion in a track. They work instinctively as a team, constantly striving to get better. You get more out of life by collaborating, notes Tony. Were always trying to grow, were always trying to learn and were always trying to get better at what we do. And what they do is make music with melody, movement and meaning. Music, in short, that matters to people across the globe. You can do stuff that is popular without selling out, says Jono. If you do something of good quality, people respond to that. Which is why even when they are half a world away, audiences always make Above & Beyond feel at home.

Spiral control
The tilt and turn is a post-impact continuation of the downswing motion that is absent in the swings of most high handicappers, especially those who have been taught to stay down. The correct motion after contact consists of a spiraling up of the upper body as it winds itself around the spine and the forward leg. When you think rotation, you will rotate. When you think tilt, you will tilt. Neither is exactly correct, so be careful what you think. If all you do is rotate your body, your club is dragged across the ball at impact, producing pulls and slices. If all you do is tilt, your clubhead comes to the ball too steeply, causing fat shots and shots that fly to the right of the tar-

Kahne is able
hen Kasey Kahne and his crew chief Kenny Francis took over the No. 5 Chevrolet at Hendrick Motorsports at the beginning of this season, many in NASCAR figured theyd be a pretty sure bet to make the Chase for the Sprint Cup. After 19 of 26 regular season races, theyve lived up to those expectations, but it could have easily gone the other way. Kahne won at New Hampshire Motor Speedway on Sunday, his second win of the season, the other coming in the Coca-Cola 600 at Charlotte in May. Hes now atop the Chases wild card standings with the two victories and a 12th-place spot in the overall standings.

Defending Sprint Cup champion Tony Stewart added an ESPY to his list of accolades. Stewart won the 2012 ESPY for Best Driver at the 20th annual ESPY Awards on ESPN, beating four-time IndyCar champion Dario Franchitti, F1 champion Sebastian Vettel and NHRA Top Fuel champ Del Worsham.

Remarkable turn around after early woes

His current positioning reflects a remarkable turn around from the crashes, driver mistakes and mechanical issues that had him 31st in the standings after the sixth race of the season, at Martinsville, where he started on the pole but blew an engine and finished 38th. While the victory at New Hampshire gave him an advantage over the other contenders who have just one win apiece for the two wild card spots, Kahne said in his winners interview that the pivotal win likely was the one in the 600. Charlotte to me was a big turning point for us, he said. It got our team really excited and

going. [The New Hampshire win] is just another bonus. This should give the team some more confidence, myself some more confidence, and carry some momentum into these final [seven regular season races]. At New Hampshire, Kahne benefited from a miscommunication between Denny Hamlin and his crew chief Darian Grubb. On the races final pit stop, Grubb called for a four-tire stop, thinking that was what Hamlin wanted. It wasnt, and while others who changed two tires quickly returned to the track, Hamlin went from the lead to 13th. He charged back to finish second, but was unable to overtake Kahne.

Kahne said that in racing the breaks have a way of evening themselves out, and this time he was a beneficiary. You have good luck at times, bad luck at times, he said. Some of ours wasnt bad luck. At Phoenix it was straight up driver error. We had some bad luck, some straight up mistakes, things to learn from. When you do that or have those mistakes, as long as youre learning from them, youll be all right. But, yeah, the luck changed [at New Hampshire]. We had great luck today. For those guys to miscommunicate, that helped us a ton. Ill take em any way we can.

Fellow drivers take wait-and-see Harvick, wife welcome new son stance on Allmendinger
While the NASCAR world awaits the results of tests on A.J. Allmendingers B sample, Allmendingers fellow drivers generally are withholding comment about his suspension for failing a drug test. Allmendingers publicist has said that the A test of the urine taken at Kentucky Speedway showed a stimulant, and many are wondering if it could have been ingested as part of an energy supplement of some sort that the driver took. Matt Kenseth said hes among those taking a waitand-see approach. I think itll become probably more clear one way or the other once we hear the rest of the details from his side and from NASCARs side what it was, if we ever find out, he said during his regular media appearance at New Hampshire. I think everybody hates to see that, from the fans to especially the competitors. Kenseth said he does like having the drug testing program. I know Ive never in my life done an illegal drug, and I dont use any supplements, he said. I dont do any of that stuff. I know a lot of people do a lot of different workout stuff, I just dont take any of that stuff. Carl Edwards said hed like to see some changes to the testing program. I think the drivers need to get together, and we need to have our own group that is paid by us, that works for us, to be here in tandem with the NASCAR drug testers and have them test us at the same time so that we have not just an A and B sample, but an A and B testing facility, and we can all agree on that facility, he said. I dont think it would be a contentious thing, I think that would remove almost all doubt in any situation of a positive test. Between racing at Daytona and at New Hampshire Motor Speedway, Kevin Harvick became a new father. Keelan Paul Harvick was born on July 8, the day after the Daytona race, giving Harvick several days to be with his wife Delana and their son. He said mom and baby did fine during delivery, even though he didnt get great reviews on his part. We went in, and she did a great job, and had a baby within about two hours, Harvick told media at New Hampshire. Dad waited a little long to get her to the hospital. I was obviously not her favorite person, as they told her they wouldnt give her an epidural. She did good. She had it all natural, no drugs or nothing. We had a healthy baby boy, and that was the most important part. And like many a driver before him, Harvick agreed that family matters far outweigh anything that happens on the race track. That was the best moment Ive ever got to experience in my life, he said. It is pretty neat. In a sign of the times, the Harvicks already have a Twitter account and website in their sons name, even though itll be years before he can use

Allmendinger

Obviously, when youre out there racing at 200 miles an hour, you want everybody to be right, he said. Thats what the program is for, so if there was something wrong, you dont want to be out there with somebody if theres something wrong with them. Kenseth also said he doesnt use supplements.

them himself. Well, Keelan has his own everything because I didnt want some crazy fan getting hold of his Twitter name or his website, he said. So he has everything that you could imagKevin Harvick ine from top to bot(NASCAR photo) tom just as more of a personal security Its more of just kind of protecting him than anything. Harvick said that while history shows that his son is likely to try racing at some point, hes not planning to encourage that. Were hoping for golf clubs, he said. Were hoping that we go in a different direction there. But, whatever he wants to do. At New Hampshire, Harvick was poised to win Saturdays Nationwide Series race, but he lost the lead to eventual winner Brad Keselowski in the closing laps while trying to pass the slower car of Amber Cope. In Sundays 301, he finished eighth to remain sixth in the standings.

Hondas top-selling CR-V just keeps on getting better

By Christopher A. Randazzo
Its really hard to top the Honda CR-V. Month after month it always seems to find its way in the list of the top 10 selling vehicles. And its no wonder the CR-V does everything well, making it the number one compact-crossover SUV. And not about to let the competition catch up, Honda has just redesigned the CR-V, making it even better. For the most part, the 2012 Honda CR-V is all-new. Both the interior and exterior have been restyled, and although the drivetrain is basically the same, it has been upgraded to get better fuel economy and make more power. The CR-Vs new clothing is an evolution of the last CR-V and now features an Accord-like front-end. The soft round winto be a strong point. Up front, the seats are nicely padded and shaped so a trek across Texas shouldnt wear you out. In back, the seats no longer slide fore and aft due to the fact they can now auto-fold into the floor at the tug of a lever, almost mini-van like. But there is plenty of leg room in the back of the CR-V that anyone this side of LeBron James should fit nicely. And kids will be happy to know that Honda now offers a rear-seat DVD entertainment system in the CR-V. Under the hood, you still wont find six cylinders. Instead, you will see the same Honda 2.4 liter four-cylinder engine from last years model. For the new CR-V, the engine gets a 5 hp bump which brings the total horsepower up to 185. Torque is increased to 163 lb-ft up 2. There is no engine option, but you can choose between frontwheel drive and Hondas Real Time 4WD system (really an all-wheel drive system). What this system does is keep the CR-V operating in front-wheel drive mode under normal conditions, which is great for fuel economy. But when the Real Time system identifies some form of wheel slippage, it automatically engages and delivers power to all four wheels. There are no buttons to push or levers By The Numbers: to pull. This system is perfect for unpredictable weather conditions, but those looking for a true off-road SUV need look elsewhere. All CR-Vs continue to use a five-speed automatic transmission. With five different trim levels, buyers can choose the CR-V that meets their needs. The base CR-V is the LX. It includes steel wheels, full power accessories, cruise control, keyless entry, a stereo with CD player and even a rearview camera. If at all possible, try to jump up to at least the EX which gives the CR-V alloy wheels replacing the ugly steel ones and a better audio system, a sunroof, and foglights. Splurging to the EX-L adds in leather interior, power drivers seat, and front seat heaters. The EX-L with Navigation gets, you guessed it, a navigation system while the EX-L with Rear Entertainment Systems gets the above mentioned rear-seat DVD system. Unfortunately the nav system and rear DVD system cant be had together. Behind the wheel of the CR-V feels, like, well a Honda. There isnt a lot of power, especially down low, making you wish Honda would give it a V6. But once moving, the CR-V does drive nicely. The ride is smooth and the steering and suspension feel tight. And you wont find yourself hanging out at the gas station with all the other SUVs, for the CR-V brings in around 22 miles per gallon in the city and 30 mpg on the highway both of those numbers are up from last year (21/28). Like the previous model, the 2012 CR-V is a very wellrounded sport-utility vehicle. And when it comes to pricing, Honda is right with the competition, if not below it. A base two-wheel drive LX starts at around $22,495, where as a fully loaded AWD EX-L with the navigation system will come in at around $30,605. A lot of SUV at a great price and from a company like Honda. No wonder its the best-selling SUV in America and will probably continue to be.

dow curves of the old CR-V are noticeably gone - exchanged for a more angled look. The overall styling of the new CR-V is pleasant and easily recognizable. Inside is where bigger changes can be found. The cabin looks larger and is better-looking than before. All the materials used

are high-quality making the interior feel Acura-like. Missing is the open space between the front seats in last years sub EX-L models; now all CR-Vs come with a full front center console providing more storage compartments and thus more utility. Seating in the CR-V continues

Bayne to honor Coach Summitt

Tennessee native Trevor Bayne and the people at Bristol Motor Speedway will honor a home-state sports legend during the Food City 250 Nationwide Series race on Aug. 24. Baynes Ford will sport a We Back Pat theme in honor of Pat Summitt, the all-time winningest coach in NCAA basketball history, who won eight NCAA national championships while coaching the Tennessee Volunteers womens basketball team. The sponsorship is intended to promote the Pat Summitt Foundation in Ricky Stenhouse Jr. its efforts to fight Alzheimers disease. Sum- (NASCAR photo) mitt was diagnosed with early onset Alzheimers disease a year ago and retired in April. Summitt also will be the grand marshal for the 250 at Bristol. Growing up in Knoxville, Ive always been a big UT fan and an even bigger fan of Pat Summit, Bayne said in a team release. I have always respected what she stood for and how she conducted business Now we need to carry on her winning tradition. The Bristol start will mark Baynes sixth in the Nationwide Series this year. His Roush Fenway team parked his car after the first five races due to lack of sponsorship. Bayne returns to the Sprint Cup Series July 29 in the Wood Brothers Ford at Indianapolis Motor Speedway.

Stenhouse collapses after race

Nationwide Series driver Ricky Stenhouse Jr. turned in a gusty performance in Saturdays race at New Hampshire Motor Speedway even though he didnt win, and lost a $100,000 bonus to Austin Dillon. Stenhouse, who had been ill all week before the race, drove his No. 6 Ford to a fifth-place finish, but collapsed after he climbed from his car. His crew chief Mike Kelley told reporters that Stenhouses illness, coupled with the heat at New Hampshire, was too much for him. Kelley visited with Stenhouse in the tracks care center, where he was given fluids before being released. He remembers we didnt win the $100,000, and we didnt get the finish we wanted, Kelley said. I know hes alert, but he remembers pretty much everything out there. We talked about it a little bit, and I think hes going to be fine. The $100,000 bonus is offered by series sponsor Nationwide Insurance through its Dash 4 Cash program to the highest finishing series regular in select races this summer. It is intended to raise the profile of the series regulars, who often lose the spotlight to the double-dipping Sprint Cup drivers who win the majority of the Nationwide races. Sprint Cup regular Brad Keselowski, who won the F.W. Webb 200, collected $38,700, while Dillon earned $131,643 for his third-place finish.
