The Spirit of the Lord is upon us, because the Lord has anointed us to proclaim: Ecce Agnus Dei - Behold the Lamb of God; Behold the Good News of Jesus Christ.
Inspired by Luke 4:18 & John 1:29
If there is something distracting on your clothes, choose something else to wear. When we dress for Church we should consider Jesus and we should consider other people. We should ask ourselves this question: If I wear this or that, will I be a distraction to other people there at Church? In one parish a few years ago visitors came to Church and each family member had on a shirt with a very large, graphic picture of the devil on the back. It must have been a sports team, at least I hope it was. At the top of each devil shirt the word DEVILS was written in large letters. Outside, after Mass the mom from a family who sat behind the visitors spoke to the mom with the devil-shirts. In a respectful mom to mom manner, she mentioned that the devil shirts had been a great distraction for them. The visitor mom with the devil shirts was offended and stormed off as if she had been insulted. Are we now at such a low point in our society that those wearing devil shirts to Church can claim not to have been insulting? What principles could the parents with the devil shirts use to explain how they had been offended? Isnt it rather obvious that the devil has no place in Gods House, at Mass? Obviously, not! If what you wear to Church is revealing, you must think of how that might cause others in Church to take their eyes off Christ in Word and Sacrament. Think of how embarrassed one would be if a parent walked out of the house in their pajamas, nightgown with or without a bathrobe. How embarrassing? What about you? By the way, I have seen a person wear pajama bottoms to Mass! When it comes to God we should give Him ONLY the best of what we have. Wear your best clothes for the season to Church. At Church and elsewhere, thinking of how you dress will have an impact on you and others around you. This applies to both men and women, as well as to teenagers and children. We must learn that we do not live on an island. We do not live in solitary isolation. Jesus taught us that the Temple was the place of Gods Presence [Just as our Tabernacles and Altars are today in our churches]. Modesty is a very neglected virtue in todays day and age. The mentality of if youve got it, flaunt it is rampant (even among those who do not, ummmmhave it). While inappropriate imagery of Satan or other evil things are one thing, a probably far more common problem is clothing that is far too revealing. Some people have shared that they are amazed at what passes for suitable attire for Church. Some revealing clothes look like they are more appropriate for an evening at the local bar but not for Church. Try to dress nicely, not for your benefit, or for anyone elses, but for respect for the Lord, because we love Him and want to take small steps to show both the reverence in which we hold the presence of Jesus Christ in Mass and our love for God and Christs Sacrifice. We can at least try to dress nicely and modestly; we can make one small effort to dress nicely (and modestly) at Mass! One of the most challenging tasks confronting parents is that of instilling within their children a proper set of values. This makes parenthood a tremendous responsibility because such values will provide them with motivation and guidance throughout their lives (Prov. 22:6). There is no better basis for selection of values upon which to base our own or our children's lives than the two principles Jesus suggested in Matthew 22 as the great commandments: "You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart, with all your soul, and with all your mind" (v. 37). "You shall love your neighbor as your self" (v. 39).

Sixteenth Sunday in Ordinary Times The readings today draw us closer to God. Jesus, the Good Shepherd, through the shedding of His blood, has reconciled us with God and with each other. He has broken down the barriers of hostility between us so that we may live in peace. As our Good Shepherd, Jesus provides for us and nourishes us in body and in spirit. In turn, He asks us to be his Stewards
of the Kingdom.
Here are just a few of the many offerings to God from the youths of St. John the Baptist. Keira, Kailey, Joseph, Katherine and Natalie all donated money to the church this week. Natalie watered for her grandpa. Katherine washed the dishes. Joseph helped pick up branches after the storm. Kailey cleaned up from the storm. Keira walked the dog.

St. Johns PADS Homeless Ministry Thank you for the warm reception this past weekend when I spoke at all the masses about St. Johns PADS shelter. Our hosting experience on Monday nights at St. Johns has been an unqualified success. We were even open during the storm several weeks ago when the power was out, using a generator for lights and fans. There are two different volunteering opportunities that I wanted to address. First, here is a schedule of upcoming shelter nights: July 23, 2012: July 30, 2012: August 27, 2012: St. Johns and Roselle Methodist are hosting; Central DuPage is staffing so no St. Johns help is needed; Last night of shelter at St. Johns. Were hosting, along with Roselle Methodist. The Knights of Columbus will be having a cook-out. And this is the night that well need SJs volunteers.
Once our summertime commitment is over and we are no longer hosting for St. Isadores, our next step as a church is to find an existing DuPage PADS shelter in our area that can use our assistance. This is when our St. Johns Homeless Ministry will step in. In general, PADS shelters need about 40 people to run the shelter for the evening. Additional volunteers are needed to provide and prepare food. So, we have lots of volunteer opportunities. If you are interested in becoming part of the St. Johns PADS Homeless Ministry, please contact me, Rick Loechl, cell phone 630-222-5455, email rloechl@prodigy.net Rick Loechl, Parish Council

Illinois Catholic Advocacy Network, or I-CAN I-CAN invites you to sign up for occasional e-mail updates from the Catholic Conference of Illinois (CCI). Catholic Conferences in other states are developing similar networks, recognizing the need for more creative forms of engagement for the laity. You can sign up online at http://www.ilcatholic.org/take-action/join-i-can If you are interested in signing up but do not have e-mail, please contact Catholic Conference of Illinois at 65 E. Wacker Place, Suite 1620, Chicago, IL 60601, or phone 312-368-1066. CCI realizes that Catholics, both as citizens and Church members, need to become more engaged with state and federal policies that affect the Church and her mission. The loss of state foster care and adoption contracts for Catholic Charities and the federal HHS mandate forcing insurance coverage of abortion-inducing drugs, contraceptives and sterilizations highlight the need for Catholics to be informed about the Church's role in the public square. Catholics want a voice, especially when the government is increasingly encroaching on the mission and the operations of the Church. The enthusiastic participation of every Catholic is needed in this important endeavor to challenge unconstitutional attacks on our religious freedom. For more information, please visit: www.ilcatholic.org Attention all special needs teens/ adults The Children of Mary group meets every Friday from 10-2 pm at Corpus Christi parish, 1415 Lies Rd., in Carol Stream. Please have your son or daughter bring his or her lunch. The Children of Mary incorporate prayer, scripture and lots of fun activities like swimming, horseback riding, fishing, camping, biking and taking the train to Chicago. Volunteers are needed to help on these Fridays; teens and college students are welcome who are planning on majoring in special education. Please call Debbie at 630-788-6382 or email at luvkids4life@yahoo.com
