Ohms Law Lab

Physics

Name:________________ Block: ______

Objective
Verify Ohms law using a multi-meter, batteries, and resistors. Construct a graph using the information in the table of data that you generate. Determine if the resistance of a resistor is linear (Ohmic) when plotting current v. voltage.

Procedure
Verify Ohms law using a multi-meter, 1.5V batteries, and resistors. DO NOT USE 6 VOLT (LANTERN) BATTERIES!! Use a circuit as shown in the diagram to the right. Using two different resistors, complete the table below, measuring voltage and amperage each time.

Resistor # 1 1 1 1 1 1 2 2 2 2 2 2

# of Batteries 1 2 3 4 5 6 1 2 3 4 5 6

Analysis
Construct a graph using the information in the table of data. Considering that V = IR, and you are looking to experimentally determine R, on which axis should you place V, and which axis I? Draw a line of best fit on your graph and find the slope. Include units.

Slope of graph:

Resistor 1: ___________

Resistor 2: __________

Using the multi-meter for a direct measurement, determine how many Ohms each of your resistors is.

Direct Measurement:

Resistor 1: ___________

Resistor 2: __________

Determine the % difference between your slope from the graph and the directly-measured value.

What are the sources of error in this experiment? Be specific!
