DVD or any other substitution technology Visual clue in a document a documents title, headings, subheadings, figures and figure captions; words in boldface and italics; and numbered and bulleted lists; Distortion Power on a TV and when use hairdryer nearby you can see spots and lines on the TV screen that are caused by the electromagnetic energy generated by the motor in the hairdryer. Place a mobile phone next to a radio you will often hear beeps on the radio as the phone sends signals to the phone network. One key that influenced the development of the video market. Camcorder Telephone Input device in a PDA Small keyboards Touch screens An electrical storage medium Flash Word-processing software Microsoft Word A component in an RFID system Tag Reader Host computer A limitation on barcodes o Barcodes cant identify an item individually and uniquely for example, the twohundred-and-thirtieth 100 g jar of Cafe Direct coffee to roll off the production line on the 15th July 2005. o Barcodes can not provide access to other information like the length of time it was stored in the warehouse, the name of the carriers who shipped it to the supermarket, the length of time it has been displayed on the shelf, Recycling information about the bottle. o The scanner and barcode have to be within line-of-sight of each other, and correct recognition is dependent on the optical clarity of both of them. But RFID tags dont require line-of-sight so can still be read through obstructions like packaging and pallets, and some tags can be read from distances of several tens of metres. o Barcodes may suffer damage - the checkout staff making several attempts to scan a barcode, only to end up entering the number manually into the checkout system? But RFID tags can suffer some damage and still be read, theyll work in environments that are hot and dirty,

2)

List three benefits of smart home technology. ( 3 marks)

T175A Form A 4/7

T175A Final Exam Fall 2010-2011

1) Relieving user of the tedium of performing a lot of routine tasks. 2) Saving in energy the technology could bring for instance by switching off devices (TV, radio, hifi, heaters, lights) when theres no one there to use them. 3) Independence provided for the elderly or infirm a key consideration in an ageing society. 4) Automating routine tasks 5) Devices could feed information back to a monitoring system so that if, for example, a kettle hasnt been used or a door opened for some time, carers are alerted to a potential problem. 6) A user can monitor and control his/her home remotely. 7) If I found I was going to be unexpectedly late returning home I could arrange for curtains or blinds to be drawn, a light to be switched on to deter intruders, and the heating cycle to be delayed. 8) Ask the house to report certain conditions to owner when he/she was away burst pipes, equipment failures or overheating appliances, for example. 9) Insurance companies might charge lower premiums for household insurance if such monitoring systems were in place. 10)crime reduction - the ability to monitor buildings from a remote location might lead to crime reduction. 11)Monitoring children - With suitably placed closed-circuit TV cameras, a smart home network could help parents keep an eye on children in different rooms. Indeed, with a smart home network linked to the internet, parents could also monitor older children at home on their own

3)

Explain how the problem of messages competition in networks has been solved. (3 marks) Solution is by using segmentation. A segment is a discrete portion of a network in which all nodes share the communication link. A switch or bridge: are devices used to join segments together. Switches and bridges will examine each frame as it arrives and read the destination MAC address to establish whether or not to pass the frame onto an adjacent segment. (1 mark) A segment will receive only frames destined for nodes within it or frames that need to be routed through it to reach other segments further along the network. 4) Explain how medium is shared in the following types of networks. ( 4 marks) a) Infrastructure WiFi network. (2 marks) All the stations in a WiFi network share the same communication channel only one station at a time can be allowed to send data. A station waits until it detects a period of inactivity and then uses a special protocol which prevents two or more stations sending data at exactly the same time. The exchanges involved in these protocols are another example of management data. b) Bluetooth piconet. (2 marks) The master unit controls all aspects of the communication within the piconet, designating dedicated time slots when each slave can communicate. This prevents slaves from sending data simultaneously.

Part 3
Problem Solving: (20 marks)

T175A Final Exam Fall 2010-2011

1) Estimate how many times faster the data rate of the WiFi network of 30 Mbps is, compared to the data rate of a ZigBee network of 250 kbps. (3 marks) 30 Mbps = 30 000 000 bps 1 mark 250 Kbps= 250 000 bps 1 mark 30 000 000 / 250 000= 120 1 mark WiFi data rate is faster than the ZigBee data rate by120 times

2)

Giving the following figure which shows voltage across wires as measured 200 m away from switch in a circuit with one battery. Explain why the corners are rounded and why the pulse is less than 1.2 volt. ( 3 marks)

o Distortion alters the pulse, rounding the corners and generally changing the shape.
Qualitatively, the smoothing of the corners is because the wires do not allow the voltage to change instantaneously -- there is a sort of electrical drag as the pulse travels along the wires. More random distortion effects are caused by what is referred to as noise. Noise is the unavoidable effect where signals develop unwanted, meaningless distortions. o Attenuation reduces the height of the pulse, so that it does not reach 1.2 volts any more. Some of the voltage has been lost as it travels the 200 meters because some energy from the electricity is absorbed by (very slightly) heating the wires and some energy is radiated into the air as the wires act as a (very inefficient) aerial. Award 1 mark for stating the problem and half for explaining it. 3) Using the following block diagram, write the block description for the following processes. ( 5 marks)

Store files to be printed in buffer which is a portion of the printers memory before being processed.
