Testing
iPod touch Testing Notes
Note: Always check for updates to verify that the most current procedures are being used. If iPod touch has a blank screen and does not wake up, connect iPod touch to a USB power adapter only (do NOT connect it to FireWire). If after 10 seconds iPod touch does not wake up while charging (with the USB power adapter), fail the iPod. iPod touch can be connected to FireWire for charging or power ONLY if it is able to wake up on its own battery charge or with USB power. For battery charging complaints: - If the screen is blank and does not wake up, connect iPod touch to a USB power adapter. If it does not wake up after 10 seconds, fail the iPod. - If iPod touch wakes up under its own power or USB power, perform a USB Charge Current Test (see iPod Testing Procedures). When performing a USB Charge Current Test, put iPod touch to sleep by tapping the Sleep/ Wake button. Disk Mode is not applicable Hard disk scan is not applicable A restore to factory settings must always be performed on the iPod (if possible) before a hardware failure can be verified. iTunes restore and media sync is the same as for video capable iPods, except: - Videos cannot be automatically synced when restoring. Either drag the test movies from the iTunes library to the iPod touch icon, or select iPod touch in the Source list, then select the Movies tab. Check the Sync movies check box, if only the test movies are in the iTunes library. If not, then select the testing playlist, and click the Sync or Apply button. For battery life testing, perform only the music test (video cannot be set to repeat play) In addition to usual functional testing for music, photos, and video the following are also tested:. - Touchscreen - Accelerometer - Auto-Brightness adjustment - Wi-Fi connection - Safari Internet connection If iPod touch will be returned to the customer, a final restore procedure must be performed to remove all test media (see iPod Testing Procedures).

Verify Battery Charge

iPod touch must have power to proceed with testing. Important: If the iPod touch screen is blank, do NOT connect it to FireWire. 1. Either: Press hold the Sleep/Wake button for a few seconds to turn iPod touch on (Apple appears) or wake it. Connect it to a USB (only) power adapter to wake it. If iPod touch wakes up, check the battery icon in the upper right corner of the screen: If there is enough battery charge, continue testing. If there is NOT enough battery charge, or one of the low-battery images (below) appears, connect iPod touch to either a USB or FireWire power adapter, for up to 10 minutes before continuing, or connect to a FireWire/USB splitter cable with FireWire power adapter.

2. 3.

Warning: If after charging 5 minutes the iPod is unusually hot, disconnect and fail the iPod. Do not leave these units unattended overnight.

Battery Charging Complaint

For iPod touch with a battery charging complaint, do the following: Do NOT connect iPod touch to FireWire. If the iPod touch screen is blank and it does not wake up or you cannot turn iPod touch on, connect it to a USB power adapter. If it does not wake up after 10 seconds, fail the iPod. Battery Life Tips

To conserve battery power, the customer might try any of the following: Turn off Wi-Fi, or the Ask to Join Networks feature. Set manually when needed, in Wi-Fi settings. Lower the Brightness setting. This also affects the levels when Auto-Brightness is ON. Setting Auto-Brightness ON can save battery life, especially in low light conditions where it adjusts the display brightness lower (in bright conditions, it adjusts the brightness level higher). Set the Auto-Lock to activate sooner. Lock iPod touch when not in use by tapping the Sleep/Wake button. Turn off equalization (EQ), in the Music settings. Verify that music is not playing when locking iPod touch, unless intended. Music continues to play when iPod touch is locked.

For Battery Life Testing

iPod touch cannot set videos to repeat play, so only music testing is used to test battery life. Follow iPod Testing Procedures to setup iPod touch for battery life testing. Charging iPod touch for battery life testing: Charge iPod touch for at least 4 hours. If after 5 hours the battery is not charged, fail the iPod. If after disconnecting iPod touch from the power adapter the Charged icon continues to show in the upper right corner, fail the iPod. The following instructions are for setting iPod touch to repeat all songs: 1. When starting the first song, tap the middle of the screen to reveal the Repeat icon the left of the scrubber bar.

Cant add or play a song, video, or other item

The media may have been encoded in a format that iPod touch doesnt support. The following audio file formats are supported. These include formats for audiobooks and podcasting: AAC (M4A, M4B, M4P, up to 320 Kbps) Apple Lossless (a high-quality compressed format) MP3 (up to 320 Kbps) MP3 Variable Bit Rate (VBR) WAV AA (audible.com spoken word, formats 2, 3, and 4) AIFF The following video file formats are supported by iPod touch: H.264 (Baseline Profile Level 3.0) MPEG-4 (Simple Profile) A song encoded using Apple Lossless format has full CD-quality sound, but takes up only about half as much space as a song encoded using AIFF or WAV format. The same song encoded in AAC or MP3 format takes up even less space. When you import music from a CD using iTunes, it is converted to AAC format by default. Using iTunes for Windows, the customer can convert nonprotected WMA files to AAC or MP3 format. This can be useful if they have a library of music encoded in WMA format. iPod touch does not support WMA, MPEG Layer 1, MPEG Layer 2 audio files, or audible.com format 1. If they have a song or video in their iTunes library that isnt supported by iPod touch, they may be able to convert it to a format iPod touch supports. See iTunes Help for more information.

Cant purchase music from the iTunes Wi-Fi Music Store

To purchase songs from the iTunes Wi-Fi Music Store (only available in some countries), the customer must have an iTunes Store account, and they must have been signed in to that account when they last synced iPod touch with iTunes.
