Architectural Graphic Standards CD-ROM is based on and contains all of the information from the tenth edition of Architectural Graphic Standards, the classic architectural reference work that has been the standard of the industry for over seventy years. Architectural Graphic Standards (AGS) has been an integral part of almost every architects practice since it was first published in 1932. AGS offers a unique value to the reader: a set of practice guidelines that represents the commonly accepted methods that the architect can use as is, or adapt to meet the needs of a particular design problem. INTRODUCTION

INDUSTRY LINKS UPDATE Registered AGS CD-ROM users can visit the AGS CD-ROM Web site to download the new and updated Industry Links. E-MAIL LINKS AGS CD-ROM includes references to e-mail addresses for Industry Links. As initially configured, those e-mail links are not active. Users, at their discretion, can make a simple change to the AGS CD-ROM INI file to activate the e-mail addresses. See Customization to Activate E-mail Links in the Online Help for more information. When the e-mail addresses are active, AGS CD-ROM will launch your email software using the e-mail address as the mail to default. SAVE OPTIONS The Options menu pulldown includes Save Options which, when checked, will save user settings for Scroll Bars and Return to Main. If unchecked, the Options will return to default (Scroll Bars unchecked, Return to Main checked).

USING AGS CD-ROM

Using AGS CD-ROM is simple. Two easy steps help you instantly find the information you need: (1) Search and (2) Examine, Explore, and Use. SEARCH There are several simple and intuitive ways to search for information: Chapterthe traditional organization of AGS, generally based on the CSI MasterFormat structure Building Systemsinformation organized by systems and components for several common building technologies Special Interestedited collections of information that cross topic boundaries (e.g., Americans with Disabilities Act)

Wordspecify a word or word string to locate information in AGS CD-ROM Indexscroll through alphabetic listings of information in AGS CD-ROM Chapter, Special Interest, and Building Systems Search methods start with major categories of information. Pick a category and a list of topics appears to focus your search. Each topic instantly links you to collections of objectsdrawings, diagrams, tables, charts, and text on a particular topic, building system, or area of special interest. Select and browse any collection from the content list to pinpoint the information you need. Word Search provides direct access to objects that contain specific words in the object title or text body while offering a number of options to focus your search. There is also an online Index for quick subject matter navigation. EXAMINE, EXPLORE, AND USE Pick an object from the collection to examine in greater detail. Organize and compare information from different searches to answer your design questions, or link to more information on the topic you are researching. With Version 3.0 Industry Links, users can connect to a variety of Web sites for related information. Take the information you have found, copy it to the clipboard, print it, or save it as a file on your hard drive. Selected information can even be inserted directly into Windows-based CAD programs, such as AutoCAD, MicroStation, Visio, and other programs that support DWG, DGN, or DXF vector data formats. AGS CD-ROM also provides raster and text data that can be copied into a variety of Windows programs.

Before installing AGS CD-ROM, check your system for the following characteristics. AGS CD-ROM requires 1.5 megabytes of free disk space on your hard drive for installation. You can also run AGS CD-ROM executable off the CD; however, it will run slower off the CD than if directly installed on your hard drive. AGS CD-ROM will run under Windows 95, Windows 98, and Windows NT. Installation of AGS-CD ROM to be used on a network CD-ROM or a network hard drive will require site licensing. Please contact the AGS Sales Manager at John Wiley & Sons, Inc. at (800) 753-0655, 8:00 AM to 5:00 PM MST, or (719) 548-1212 (fax), to discuss licensing for a network version of AGS CD-ROM . INSTALLING THE DEMO VERSION The Demo Version of AGS CD-ROM Version 3.0 is designed to allow users to experience the full functionality of AGS CD-ROM, but with access to only a limited portion of the data. The Demo Version provides access to the following content: From the Chapter Search method, all of the information in Chapter 4Masonry Construction. From the Building Systems Search method, all of the information accessible from the Steel Bar Joist and Bearing Wall Building System. Information on Manufacturers, Associations, and Resources for Masonry Construction (Division 04). 1.0 2.0 To install, insert AGS CD-ROM Version 3.0 into the CD-ROM reader. In most systems, AGS CD-ROM will start up in Auto Run mode. If AGS CD-ROM does not start up in Auto Run mode follow these steps: 2.1 From the Start Menu, choose Run . . . 2.2 From the Run window, type in D:\SETUP.EXE (where D is the name of your CD-ROM drive). 2.3 Click the OK button. A License Agreement will appear. You must read the agreement and click Accept License to continue the install process. A dialog box will appear prompting you to Run Demo or Install Full. Select Run Demo and the install process is complete and AGS CD-ROM will be launched in Demo Version mode.

INSTALLING THE LOCKED VERSION The Full Working Version of AGS CD-ROM provides full functionality and access to all of the data on the CD-ROM. When a user wants to upgrade to the full version of AGS CD-ROM they are asked to provide an Unlock Code.

To obtain an Unlock Code for the full version of AGS CD-ROM Version 3.0, contact John Wiley & Sons over the Internet at http://www.wiley.com/ags/unlock or call 1-800-753-0655 (voice) from 8:00 am to 5:00 pm MST or 1-719-548-1212 (fax). Outside of North America, please call 1-719-548-4900. Once you have the Unlock Code, rerun AGS Setup to permanently unlock your copy of the CD-ROM. You will need to exit the Demo Version of AGS CD-ROM before running Setup. 1.0, 2.0, To install, insert AGS CD-ROM Version 3.0 into the CD-ROM reader. Enter your User Name and Unlock Code exactly as provided by John Wiley & Sons. Once entered, click Finish. A Select Destination Directory window will appear prompting you to specify the directory on your hard drive for software installation. Note: AGS CD-ROM includes an uninstall program. Click on the Uninstall AGS CD-ROM icon and follow the instructions on the screen. Users can also uninstall AGS CD-ROM by selecting Settings from the Start menu and then choosing the Control Panel. In the Control Panel, select the Add/Remove Programs icon to open the Add/ Remove Program Properties dialog box. In this dialog, highlight the Version of AGS CD-ROM that you wish to uninstall and select the Add/Remove button.

AGS CD-ROM uses specific terms to define navigation. The following descriptions and illustrations will help you understand the use of those terms:

1. Menu Bar. Menu pull-downs provide alternate access to major AGS CD-ROM features. 2. Search Methods. Choose between Chapter, Building Systems, Special Interest, Word, and Index. 3. Categories. Categories are major groupings of information. Categories are presented as a group of buttons found on the left-hand side of the Search screen. 4. Topics. Topics are subjects of interest within the particular categories and are presented as lists in the Chapter and Special Interest

2. Collection. A collection is the thumbnail image of a group of objects. Move your cursor across the collection to get more information about each object. Click on an object to select it for further examination. Only one collection can be open at any time. On occasion, an outline will highlight more than one object. When selected, the objects title bar will display a Paper Clip icon, indicating the presence of a hotlink to additional information.

1. Hotlink. Additional information that should be viewed with active object. Select the Paper Clip icon to view closely related information. 2. Object. An object is an individual piece of information from AGS CD-ROM. You may have many objects open at the same time, but there is a practical limit based on your systems available resources.

The active object is the one that is currently selected and will have its title bar highlighted. AGS CD-ROMs additional functionalityincluding Hyperlink, Industry Links, Copy, Save, and Printworks on the active object. 3. Toolbar. The toolbar contains icons used to perform actions on the active object. 4. Minimized Objects and Content Lists. When objects and content lists are minimized, icons will appear on the workspace, indicating the name of the information. 5. Status Bar. The name of the active object or function is displayed in the status bar. Each object in AGS CD-ROM has a particular type and format. Object Type refers to the nature of the information that is displayed and falls into one of the following categories: 1. Drawings include plan, section, elevation, isometric, perspective, and detail views of information in AGS CD-ROM. 2. Diagrams and Charts provide graphic illustrations of design rules and concepts. 3. Text and Notes include paragraph text and explanatory notes. 4. Tables provide statistical and dimensional values for design and planning. Object Format refers to characteristics that influence how information is viewed in AGS CD-ROM and how it is used in other applications. An object in AGS CD-ROM is in one of three different formats: 1. Raster Data is scanned data that can be copied to the clipboard (in bitmap format) and then into an extensive variety of Windows applications. Notes and dimensions that are in the same object as raster data are stored as raster data, not text data. Raster data can be saved to your hard drive in TIF format.

2. Vector Data provides drawings that can be saved in DWG, DGN, or DXF format for use with many popular CAD systems. Vector data is copied to the clipboard in two formats. AutoCAD R12, R13, R14, and 2000 will read the AGS CD-ROM clipboard vector file format that supports layers, accurate scale, and editable text by doing a direct paste (Ctrl V) into AutoCAD. Other applications will use the standard Windows Metafile (WMF) format, which does not support layers, accurate scale, or editable text. AGS CD-ROM vector data with layers, editable text, and accurate scale can be saved on your hard drive as DGN, DWG, or DXF files. 3. Text Data can be copied from AGS CD-ROM to the clipboard in RTF (Rich Text Format) and conventional ASCII where it can be pasted into an extensive variety of Windows applications.

METHODS

AGS CD-ROM provides several easy-to-use methods to search for information. Each of the search methods offers a different way to explore the breadth and depth of AGS CD-ROM. Search methods can be selected in several different ways: 1. From the Opening screen, choose any of the five main Search methods. 2. From any of the main search screens, select one of the major Search buttons in the upper left-hand corner of the screen. 3. Select a Search method from the Search pull-down on the menu bar. 4. From Examine mode, choose the top icon on the toolbar and then select one of the major Search methods on the flyout.

You can also use Ctrl F to activate the Search flyout.

CHAPTER SEARCH
Chapter Search helps you find information generally organized according to the industry-standard sixteen division MasterFormat (1995 Edition) scheme for construction information. If you are familiar with the way AGS chapters are organized in the print edition, Chapter Search will be a convenient method for finding information in AGS CD-ROM.

As you move your cursor across the Chapter buttons, each of the major categories of design or construction information is highlighted. A description of each category also appears to the side of the button. Pick one of the buttons to get a list of topics in that category. Select a topic and AGS CD-ROM displays a content list of collections for that topic.

BUILDING SYSTEMS SEARCH

Building Systems Search presents graphic images that highlight structural, mechanical, interior, and envelope subsystems and components for several common building technologies.

Select one of the major systems categories to display an image of that system. Move your cursor across the image to display hotspots indicating available content on subsystems, components, and other information. Click on one of the hotspots to display a content list of collections and individual objects for the system you selected. Individual objects are noted with a closed bullet () whereas collections are noted with an open bullet (). Choose a collection from the list to view thumbnail images of the information you requested. As you browse, your cursor highlights information about each of the objects. Pick an object to examine it in closer detail. Choose an individual object from the list to view it in greater detail. When you select an individual object, AGS CD-ROM

transitions from Search to Examine mode. Your Search screen is cleared to clean up your workspace. You can also use Ctrl B to activate Building Systems Search.

SPECIAL INTEREST SEARCH

Special Interest Search provides access to groups of information that cross traditional chapter boundaries. Select Egress Planning, for example, to get all of the information in AGS CD-ROM on Egress Planning for Historic Buildings, Door Design, Elevator Design, Fire Escapes and Stair Design in wood, concrete, metal or stone.

Pick one of the Special Interest buttons to get a list of topics for that category. Select a topic and AGS CD-ROM displays a content list of collections and individual objects for the topic you selected. Individual

If you select the Industry Links button, you are presented with options for Associations and Resources, Product Manufacturers, and References included with AGS CD-ROM. Select Associations and Resources: Alphabetic Listing to get a complete listing of entries for each of these options. Select Associations and Resources: Topic Listing to display an indexed list of topics for that option. In all index lists, typing in the text box will cause the list to position the cursor at the entry that most closely matches what you have typed. As you move to the next level of detail, AGS CD-ROM displays your selection from the previous pick.
Note: If you have selected Product Manufacturers: CSI 1995 MasterFormat Listing as the main option, you will be presented with a list of CSI MasterFormat Divisions (1995 Edition), instead of topics, followed by the broad and medium scope numbers for that division.

When you have completed your selection, a text window opens with information about the group, including their Web and E-mail address, if available. Refer to the Links and Navigation Tools section for information on linking to the Web site. The topics listed under the Industry Links button include links to a variety of Web sites that provide additional detail drawings, building designs, and industry standards to help you gather information for your design.

Industry Links and Web sites data will be updated on a regular basis. Registered AGS CD-ROM users can download new and updated information from the AGS CD-ROM Web site maintained by John Wiley & Sons, Inc. Refer to the Links and Navigation Tools section for more information. You can also use Ctrl N to activate Special Interest Search.

WORD SEARCH
Word Search lets you search by specifying key words (including names) related to the content you want to find. The Word Search dialog asks you to specify three pieces of information: the word string to Look For, the objects to Look At, and the types of Desired Content to be returned. LOOK FOR: In the type-in box, enter the word or words you want Word Search to look for. When Word Search looks at titles, it considers the name of an objects collection as it scans individual object titles. For example, if you ask Word Search to Look For Concrete Footings, AGS CDROM finds the word Concrete from the Concrete Foundations collection and concatenates with the word Footings to return the object Spread Footings from this collection.

Spaces between words act as and in the search string (it is not necessary to type and between the words). This is an exclusive search that looks for occurrences of all words entered in an object title or text. For example, if you enter Stone Stairs, the search will return only information where both the words Stone and Stairs appear.

An inclusive search, specified by entering or between words, will find objects whose titles or text contain any of the words entered in the type-in box. For example, if you enter Stone or Stairs, the search will return information where either Stone, Stairs, or Stone Stairs appear. Word Search also looks for the occurrence of your string contained within other words. For example, specifying Arch will return content described by Arches or Architecture. CSI MasterFormat (1995 Edition) numbers can be specified in the Look For text string. When doing so, select Manufacturers as the Desired Content. Consider Proximity. When you search for more than one word at a time, checking the Consider Proximity box will cause Word Search to sequence its results based on the proximity of the words to each other.
Note: Consider Proximity has no effect on inclusive searches.

Exact Match. Whether you enter a single word or multiple words, checking the Exact Match box will cause Word Search to find only the information that contains the search string exactly as requested and in the sequence specified. Partial occurrences of words are ignored in Exact Match searches. The use of operators such as and and or are considered part of the search string and will be included in the search; however, punctuation and upper- and lower-case letters are not considered for an Exact Match. LOOK AT: Modify your search by specifying where you want Word Search to look for the specified word string. Select from one or more of the following: Titles. Searches the title of AGS CD-ROMs content collections and individual objects. When you are searching titles, Word Search may return an object whose title does not contain the words you specified. This occurs because Word Search also considers the words in the collection to which an object belongs. For example, the object titled Accessible Nosings is returned for a Word Search that specified Stair in the Look For string, because the object is part of a collection on Wood Stairs. Titles and Text. Searches the full text on AGS CD-ROM, including collection and object titles. This search will take longer than searching only titles. Titles for graphic objects (raster or vector drawings and tables) are searched, but the text inside these objects is not considered in a full text search. In order to perform a full text search, you must select Text, Associations, References, or Manufacturers as part of the Desired Content. Contributors. Search a list of contributors who provided content for AGS CD-ROM. When searching Contributors, you must select Collections as one of the types of Desired Content.

DESIRED CONTENT: Filter the results of a Word Search by specifying the type or types of Desired Content that you want. Select one or more from the list of AGS CD-ROM object types: Drawings. Drawings include plan, section, elevation, isometric, perspective, and detail views of information in AGS CD-ROM. Charts and Diagrams. Charts and Diagrams provide graphic illustrations of design rules and concepts. Tables. Tables provide statistical and dimensional values for design and planning. Text. Text includes paragraph text, many of the explanatory notes, and some of the tables. Notes and tables provided in graphical elements will not be searched. Associations. Associations provides the name, address, phone number, and when available, Web sites and E-mail addresses for associations and resources. Manufacturers. Manufacturers provides the name, address, phone number, and when available, Web sites and E-mail addresses for product manufacturers. Web site locations may be included for the Architects First Source (AFS) Profile Pages for the manufacturer, as well as the manufacturers own home page. INDEX SEARCH
Index Search lets you search through an alphabetic list of categories and topics in AGS CD-ROM. Scroll through the first list to select the category you want. In all index lists, typing in the text box will cause Index Search to position the cursor at the index entry that most closely matches what you typed. As you move to the next level of detail, AGS CD-ROM displays your selection from the last list. Click on the up arrow at the top of the list box to move back to the previous list. You can also use Ctrl I to activate Index Search.

HYPERLINKS
Hyperlinks provide an immediate link to additional information about the active object and organize the information into categories and topics to help you pinpoint the information you want.

Select Associations and Resources to display a text window with an alphabetic list of professional and trade associations on the topic being researched. The text window may include the Web site links and E-mail addresses for an Association. When you select the Web link, AGS CD-ROM will launch your default browser using the URL as the location. You can also print the text or copy it to the clipboard for further use.

Select one of the broad or medium scope MasterFormat (1995 Edition) numbers to display a text window with a list of manufacturers that provide building products for the components or information represented in the object. The text window may include the Web site

links and E-mail addresses for the manufacturers. Web site locations may be included for the Architects First Source (AFS) Profile Pages for the manufacturer as well as the Manufacturers own home page. Note: A bracketed N [N] displayed next to the MasterFormat (1995 Edition) number in the Industry Links list indicates that there are no manufacturers listed for this reference. Check the AGS CD-ROM Web site for future updates. When you select a Web link, AGS CD-ROM will launch your default browser using the URL as the location. You can also print the text or copy it to the clipboard for further use. You can also use Ctrl L to activate Industry Links.
A note on launching your Web Browser. When you select a Web site, AGS CD-ROM will provide that information as a location to your Web browser. Depending upon the configuration of your software (and operating system) selecting a link may automatically launch you to the Web site you specified.

UPDATING AGS CD-ROM INDUSTRY LINKS

AGS CD-ROMs update feature allows licensed users to keep their version of AGS CD-ROM Version 3.0 current and up to date. At regular intervals, John Wiley & Sons, Inc. will post updated content, including Industry Links, to the AGS CD-ROM Web site. To incorporate updated content, users first download a copy of the updates to their hard disk. Users then execute a simple setup routine that automatically installs the new content onto their hard disk for use in the AGS CD-ROM. From the Help pull-down menu, select Updating AGS CD-ROM. Follow the instructions on screen to connect to the Wiley Web site for downloading updates. From the Wiley Web site, click on Update AGS CD-ROM Links button and follow the instructions.

HOTLINKS
Hotlinks are AGS CD-ROMs way to highlight closely related information. When you select an object that has a hotlink, a Paper Clip icon will appear in the title bar of that object. Pick the icon to open all additional windows that further explain the object you are viewing. A table, for example, that includes dimensional values for variables shown in a drawing or diagram will be hotlinked and displayed when the Paper Clip icon is picked. It is possible for several pieces of content to be hotlinked. When any hotlinked object is active in AGS CD-ROM, all windows containing objects that are hotlinked share the same border color with the active window, even if they are not active.

GO BACK AND GO FORWARD

The Go Back and Go Forward buttons provide a convenient method for users to navigate through AGS CD-ROM. Select either icon to retrace your steps and open the objects, lists, and search methods that have been used during a session. Go Back and Go Forward allow you to page through each item that you have opened a window for. It does not track mouse clicks. You can also use Ctrl K to activate Go Back and Ctrl D to activate Go Forward.
Note: AGS CD-ROM also maintains a History List of the last fifty objects that have been opened. History List can be selected from the Search pull-down menu. Select from the list of objects to reopen and view the information.

ANAGING

WORKSPACE AND CONTROLLING OBJECT DISPLAY

Each time you search for and select an individual object from AGS CD-ROM, it is displayed in its own window. Like other Windows software, AGS CD-ROM uses standard functionality for moving, resizing, minimizing, maximizing, and closing windows. AGS CD-ROM also provides the ability to control the size and scale of objects inside the active window through its display functions. Display functions are accessed from the four Display icons on the toolbar.

ZOOM IN
Select the Zoom In icon to increase the size of the image. This icon provides two methods of operation: 1. Zoom RectangleSelect the Zoom In icon and move the cursor into the active window. Hold your mouse button down while you drag open a rectangle that describes the zoom area. 2. Zoom PointSelect the Zoom In icon and move the cursor into the active window. Click your mouse button at a specific location. AGS CD-ROM will zoom in on the information by 20 percent, using the location you selected as the center of the zoom window. You can also use Ctrl Z to activate Zoom In and toggle between Zoom In and Zoom Out.

ZOOM OUT
Select the Zoom Out icon to zoom out and see more of the object. This icon will decrease the scale of the image by 20 percent, using the location you selected as the center of the next view. You can also use Ctrl Z to activate Zoom Out and toggle between Zoom In and Zoom Out.

ZOOM EXTENTS
Select the Zoom Extents icon and then an object to fully display the entire object in the active window. You can also use Ctrl Shift Z to activate Zoom Extents.

PAN
Select the Pan icon to change your point of focus by moving the object in the active window. This icon cannot be activated when scroll bars are turned on. You can also use Ctrl Shift P to activate Pan.

RESIZING AGS CD-ROM WINDOWS

When an AGS CD-ROM window is resized to be smaller, part of the object displayed in the window is covered up. When an AGS CDROM window is resized to be larger, AGS CD-ROM first uncovers portions of the object that may have been hidden. When the window is large enough to fully display the object, further increasing the size of the window will increase the scale of the object.

SCROLL BARS
You can choose to turn scroll bars on or off in the Options pull-down menu. Once scroll bars are on, AGS CD-ROM knows when an object is not fully visible in the active window and automatically adds scroll bars to the window. When the Scroll Bars option is selected, scroll bars are added to all windows that require them. The Pan icon cannot be activated when scroll bars are turned on. You can also use Ctrl Shift S to activate/toggle Scroll Bars.

RINTING AND EXPORTING OBJECTS

A copyright notice is automatically attached as objects are printed, copied to the clipboard, or saved. When you paste AGS CD-ROM objects into another document, it is your responsibility to notify readers about the source of the content you are using. AGS CD-ROM should be credited when you copy or repurpose material. The Software License Agreement at the end of this document describes restrictions on the reuse of AGS CD-ROM data.

PRINTING OBJECTS
AGS CD-ROM lets you print the contents of the active window (the window whose title bar is highlighted) for reference. When the object you want to print is in the active window, click on the Print icon, or select Print from the File pull-down menu. Printer settings can be accessed by selecting the Printer Setup button from the File pulldown menu. Only individual objects can be printed. Vector objects are printed to best fit on a page. Raster objects will be printed at twice their original size when printing at 300 DPI. To achieve additional control over object printing, export the object to an application selected for that purpose. You can also use Ctrl P to activate the Print dialog for the active object.

COPYING OBJECTS
AGS CD-ROM lets you copy the contents of the active window (the window whose title bar is highlighted) to the clipboard. When the object you want to copy is in the active window, click on the Copy icon, or select Copy from the File pull-down menu. The image or text will be copied to the clipboard where it can be pasted into other applications.

Note: Text data is copied to the clipboard in two formats: RTF (Rich Text Format) and conventional ASCII. Text cannot be highlighted and copied. The entire content of a window is copied to the clipboard. Raster data is copied to the clipboard in standard BMP format. Vector data is copied to the clipboard in two formats: AutoCAD R12, R13, R14, and 2000 will read the AGS CD-ROM clipboard vector file format that supports layers, accurate scale, and editable text. Other applications will use the standard Windows Metafile (WMF) format, which does not support layers, accurate scale, or editable text. Another way to access AGS CD-ROM vector data with layers, editable text, and accurate scale is to save an object as either a DGN, DWG, or DXF file on your hard drive (see Saving Objects).

You can also use Ctrl C to Copy the active object to the clipboard.

SAVING OBJECTS
AGS CD-ROM lets you save the contents of the active window (the window whose title bar is highlighted) as a file on a disk that you designate. When the object you want to save is in the active window, simply click on the Save icon or select Save from the File pull-down menu. Vector data is saved with layers, accurate scale, and editable text. A dialog box will appear that allows you to save raster and vector data in the following formats:
