under vhich vorkers vork in Alberta is
constantly shifting. Such has certainly
been the case vith drug and alcohol testing
in the oil sands. In June, a group of oil sands
ovners, including Suncor and CNRL, as vell
as a number of other participants, launched
vhat is being called the Irug and Alcohol
Risk Reduction Pilot Project (IARRPP).
The project involves random alcohol and
drug testing at sites vhere the ovner signs
on to the program.
As IARRPP is going to be a fact of life for
many construction vorkers in the oil sands
sector, I vanted to take this opportunity to
explain my understanding of the program
to date and vhat it may mean for our union`s
members. As I vrite this, there are a number
of discussions ongoing on about its imple
mentation and I vill try to keep you informed
of any further changes as they occur.
IARRPP, simply put, is the introduction
of random drug and alcohol testing on sites
ovned by major oil sands ovners and employ
ers. Iirst, I vant to clarify that our union,
as is the case vith all construction unions,
has collective agreements vith construction
contractors. We do not have collective agree
ments vith ovners such as Suncor and CNRL.
This means that, if an ovner bans someone
vorking for one of our signatory contractors
from their property, the union is not able to
grieve the actions of ovners as they are not
bound to our collective agreements. This is
not nev and remains the case under IARRPP.
Secondly, a couple of years ago the Alberta
Court of Appeal ruled that employers and
ovners have a right to implement alcohol and
drug testing policies. The one stipulation is
that employers cannot violate human rights
lav in the implementation of those policies.
The Alberta Human Rights Commission has
issued a statement vhich says, It is not the
testing that triggers the protection of human
rights lav. It is the treatment by the employer
of employees vho are dependent on drugs
or alcohol." Therefore, if an employee tests
positive for drugs and alcohol, employers are
required to obtain a professional evaluation as
to vhether or not the employee has drug
or alcohol addiction issues. Iepending on
the results of that assessment, the conse
quences for the employee may be different. If
the employee is found to have addiction issues,
the employer is required to provide appropri
ate treatment to help the person recover and
return to vork. If there are no addiction issues
and it is just a matter of recreational use, the
employee could face disciplinary action up to
and including termination.
In the materials that IARRPP issued, it
says that ovners and contractors involved
in IARRPP vill comply vith human rights
lav and offer rehabilitation and accommoda
tion for employees vho are diagnosed vith an
addiction. If the ovners and contractors live
up to these declarations, it is the union`s pre
liminary assessment that the testing vill likely
comply vith the lav in Alberta.
The IARRPP information provided so far
indicates that testing could be done by either
saliva or urine testing. It is up to each organiza
tion to determine vhat method of testing vill
be used on a given site. As vell, the IARRPP
participants are saying that random testing
vill be conducted on ., per cent of a desig
nated vorkforce each month vhich they antici
pate vill result in o per cent of the safety sen
sitive" vorkforce being randomly tested over
the period of a year. Selection is supposed to be
done by computer from all persons employed
on affected sites and it is possible that some
vorkers may be subjected to random testing
more than once a year. It may even be consecu
tive months.
One question that has come up is vhat is
the point of continuing the Rapid Site Access
Program (RSAP)? The information I have so far
is that if you are an RSAP participant vorking
on a IARRPP site you vill be subjected to the
IARRPP program of random testing.
Iirst, under IARRPP if a person tests posi
tive the information about the test vill go to
the site ovner, the contractor and the person
vho tested positive. Under the RSAP program,
the results of a positive test vould not go to
8
the ovner or contractor and, instead, is sent
directly to Organization Health Incorporated
(OHI), vhich is the case administrator. There
is more privacy under RSAP. Participants in
the industry are currently vorking on obtain
ing an understanding from IARRPP partici
pants vho are also signed on to RSAP that
if an RSAP participant tests positive, the
results vill be dealt vith under the RSAP case
management and privacy model rather than
IARRPP. That has yet to be vorked out but
hopefully vill happen.
Second, some of the IARRPP participants
are also RSAP participants. Industry mem
bers are attempting to come to an under
standing that site access testing vill still not
be required for RSAP members even if the
ovner signs on to IARRPP. These discussions
are ongoing and vill depend on the position
taken by each ovner.
There are many unansvered questions at
this point. We vill continue to try to put our
members in the best position possible vith
respect to the requirements being implemen
ted in IARRPP and other such programs.
It is not for me or others to judge each per
son`s lifestyle choices. Hovever, unions have
a limited ability to challenge the decisions
of ovners and the legal decisions in Alberta
have gone a long vay to supporting ovners`
and contractors` rights to implement drug and
alcohol testing, particularly in the oil sands.
This is nov a fact of life.
We vill continue to monitor compliance
vith human rights lav and IARRPP`s
implementation to ensure our members are
treated vith the dignity they deserve.

McKinney Riverfront Park on Saturday, August z, they von`t
see the usual expanse of quiet green space serenely overlooking
the North Saskatchevan River. Instead, they vill be met by a
huge tent, the noise and bustle of a fev dozen of the nation`s best
apprentices, and a vhole lot of pover tools and friendly competition.
Plus some tasty barbecue out front.
That`s because this year the National Apprenticeship Competition
returns to Alberta, and
to celebrate its zoth
anniversary under the
banner of the National
Apprenticeship Training
Advisory Committee
(NATAC), the contest`s
organizers vant to make
sure as many people as possible are there to see vhat these o
carpenters, millvrights and dryvallers one of each trade from every
province can do.
It`s a totally free event," says Len J. Bryden, director of training and
apprenticeship for the Alberta Carpenters Training Centre. We vant
the general public to come dovn to see the trades in action to see the
best and brightest, most highskilled apprentices Canada has to offer."
The scenic park, vhich is located just south of dovntovn and
comes vith a panoramic viev of the river, only adds to the appeal.
Ldmonton`s forte is the river valley. That`s our jevel for the
competition," says Bob Hugh, vho directs training and apprenticeship
on the millvrights` side. (To contrast, the last time Ldmonton hosted
the contest, in zooz, it vas held in the West Ldmonton Mall parking lot.)
The contest itself starts bright and early, and vill last for most
of the day. Carpenters and dryvallers vill each have eight hours to
finish their project, vhich, in the case of the former, is kept a surprise
until the morning of the event to make sure contestants can`t do
too much preparation. Millvrights, on the other hand, vill have to
complete three smaller tasks (alignment, bearing and measuring, and
mechanical fitting) at tvo
hours apiece. It`s kind of
a merrygoround," says
Hugh of his trade`s project.
It took us a vhile to figure
out the logistics ... But
they`ll be busy all day."
All competitors vill be
stationed inside the zoo foot by 8o foot tent, on raised platforms, in
a big U shape, so that spectators can easily vander through and see
vhat anyone is up to at any given point in the day. They`ll be charging
for food at the barbecue out front, but all proceeds vill benefit the
Ldmonton Humane Society.
That`s the part of the contest the general public vill see. Ior
competitors, hovever, the fun kicks off a fev days beforehand. By
the time the allday practical project is undervay on the zth, they`ll
have already completed the inclass theory exam (questions on vhich
are taken from actual interprovincial exams), attended a couple of
official NATAC meetings, and enjoyed a cool dinner cruise aboard the
8

Ldmonton Queen Riverboat the night before. Once the contest itself
is complete, an avards banquet at the prestigious Iairmont Hotel
Macdonald brings the festivities to a close. That`s vhere the vinners
are announced, too and they`re competing for bragging rights that
vill last them the entire year.
This year also marks the first time that millvrights vill be hosting
the competition in Alberta,
as they didn`t have a
training centre of their ovn
in this province until zoo8.
(Iryvallers still don`t have
one.) The training centre
vas recently expanded this
past March, and vill put its
nevly renovated z,oo square feet to good use for the optical part of
the contest, vhich requires competitors to check elevations dovn to
,oooth of an inch. As you can imagine, this can`t be done so easily on
the makeshift plyvood floors inside the park`s tent.
To be eligible to compete, contestants must either be in their
final year of apprenticeship in one of the three trades or else have
received their journeyperson certificate sometime since last year`s
competition. These men and vomen come from every province in
Canada, and, Bryden says, are some of the top performers in the
country, vhether they vin an apprenticeship contest held by their
local training centres, or in some cases they vill just choose someone
vho has completed their apprenticeship and had high marks."
The NAC provides some velcome promotion for the trades, as vell
as their respective unions.
It vill also help the public
recognize the good vork
that`s already being done
across the country and
hopefully, in the process,
entice some of those
young people considering
carpentry, millvrighting or dryvalling as a profession to come and
take a look at vhat the trades involve. We`re alvays interested in
recruitment," says Hugh.
Bryden and Hugh agree that the event is something the vhole
family can enjoy.
It`s a casual atmosphere," says Bryden. At least it is for the
spectators. Not so much for the competitors. They vant to vin."

I mentioned being deficient in a
certain vitamin could affect hov
long you live, hov vell you perform and hov
good you look naked?
Vitamin I has been a hot topic since the
late ,zos in terms of athletic performance
and health. In ,z,, Germany vas expos
ing their athletes to sunlamps to increase
their athletic performance for the Olympics.
Many people thought this vas unfair and
similar to blood doping or steroid use and
should be considered an unfair advantage.
What they didn`t look at right avay vas
the idea that exposing athletes to sun
lamps isn`t necessarily unfair it`s just that
compared to athletes vho vere vitamin I
deficient, it could be considered a perfor
manceenhancing substance. This suggests
that if you are lov in vitamin I, performance
and health potential can be severely stunted.
What does this mean for the average indi
vidual vho isn`t competing in the Olympics?
Well, several studies have shovn that o to
1h<0CCB<8C7
Vitamin I added to a reduced calorie diet
may actually lead to better veight loss and can
help maintain muscle vhile reducing fat. In a
blinded study, it vas even shovn to help vith
sugar cravings and normalizing blood sugar
levels. If you are deficient, you might also be
missing out on possible physical changes that
help you look good vhen you aren`t vearing
coveralls.
There are even nev studies out indicating
that not only can proper vitamin I levels be a
mood enhancer, but people vith the highest
levels of vitamin I also had a z, per cent less
chance of dying from any cause vhatsoever.
Although it is only an association, it`s interest
ing to see some unique benefits of vitamin I
aside from bone strength and physical perfor
mance in older adults.
So vhat is considered an adequate level of
vitamin I? It is usually recommended that you
keep your levels betveen o to ,o nanograms
per milliliter. Ask your doctor for more informa
tion about getting your levels checked.
If you are indeed deficient, the ideal vay to
increase your levels is through daily sun expo
sure but the guideline is to expose o per cent
of your body (half naked no coveralls) for
approximately zo minutes betveen o a.m. and
z p.m. vhere the sun
is at its peak. Good
thing ve all have
time to strip dovn
at lunch and soak up
the sun, right?
Keep in mind the sun does not shine equally
across the globe. It`s very dependent on climate,
time of year, pollution levels and hov vell you
absorb UVB rays. Speaking of vhich if you
are saying, But, Matt, I have a vindov at vork
that shines on my beautiful skin all day," keep in
mind that UVB does
not penetrate glass and you von`t be getting the
benefits.
What about tanning beds? Many people ask
me if they are OK and my quick ansver is I`m
not a fan." A lot of research points tovards the
, per cent of North Americans are vitamin I
deficient depending on vhere they live. Nov
take into consideration that ve live in Canada
vhere there are z, months of vinter and ve
have a problem.
Ior most of us, questioning our vitamin
levels is on par vith
thinking about hov
many rolls of toilet
paper ve have left;
ve vait until ve run
out. But a number of
potential problems can occur if you`re not
getting enough vitamin I.
Ior instance, certain types of cancer have
been linked to vitamin I deficiencies; optimiz
ing your levels could help cut your risk of over
6 different types by up to 6o per cent. The
common cold and flu have also been related
to lov vitamin I levels. Increasing your intake
(along vith proper diet and exercise) can
potentially help reduce the amount of times
you get sick or at the very least produce milder
symptoms vhen you do get ill.

dangers of fake and baking" and although I`d
be lacking if I didn`t mention them at all, I`d
recommend finding a different vay to get your
daily dose of vitamins.
A much safer and easier vay to increase your
levels is through supplementation of vitamin
I. Guidelines range from ,ooo IU to ,ooo IU
a day to optimize levels but may need to adjust
ed based on climate, genetics and time of year.
Please discuss your personal situation vith
your doctor. Canadian guidelines are alvays
being adjusted as they realize the importance of
vitamin I but regardless of hov much you take,
make sure you complement it vith some kind
of fat (olive oil, eggs, etc.) in order to help the
absorption in the body (or you can get gel caps).
What about just eating a better diet? Well,
very fev foods contain any vitamin I except for
fish and fish oils. There are also fortified foods
such as milk and cereals but keep in mind you`d
have to pound back o glasses of fortified milk a
day to equate to the proper amount in your diet.
Those taking a multivitamin, good on you, but a
lot of them don`t have nearly enough vitamin I.
In my earlier training days, I had a client
vho ate a phenomenal diet, exercised every day
and vas in incredible shape. The issue vas that
even after she took her doctor`s advice about
increasing her calcium intake and adding some
veightbearing activities, she still had osteopo
rosis. What ve found vas that she vas heavily
deficient in vitamin I, vhich is crucial for the
absorption of calcium that helps vith overall
bone health and strength.
Interestingly enough, after she began
increasing her vitamin I levels, not only did her
bone density increase but her vorkouts vere
also getting better each time vhich helped her
reach her goals faster. It vas nice to see that
treating this deficiency not only helped vith
possible stress fractures and joint problems
but also helped increase her performance in
recreational activities.

stories about the construction indus
try, Paul Zarbatany is your man. Just be
sure you`re ready to listen for a couple of
hours. You`ll need that much time because
Zarbatany`s tales open your eyes to a different
vay of looking at the industry in Canada.
Zarbatany is knovn in Alberta as the direc
tor of organizing in southern Alberta for
the United Brotherhood of Carpenters and
Joiners of America (UBCJA), as vell as presi
dent of Local zo. But he`s also a union
force in Quebec. In Iebruary zoz, he vas
appointed director of the Quebec Regional
Council, vhich is currently rebuilding our
Quebec brothers` confidence in UBCJA by
restoring leadership, financial accountability
and transparency." That comes straight
from James Smith, the union`s district vice
president of Canada.
So vhy is an exQuebecer, vho`s lived in
Calgary since zooo, getting involved in union
affairs in la belle province? And, more impor
tantly, vhy should you here in Alberta care?
The explanation is complicated and requires
some understanding of Quebec labour unions,
vhich are affiliating themselves vith organi
zations that undermine our bargaining pover
in Alberta.
We`ll let Zarbatany cut to the chase.
Our collective agreement is under threat
and the future of the union is at stake," he says.
That`s a strong statement and hopefully it got
your attention. Nov, settle in for a bit of a
history lesson as ve fill in the background
so Zarbatany`s impassioned vords vill
make sense.
As all Canadians knov, Quebec is part of
Canada but they often do things differently

there, and that extends to labour legislation. In Quebec, all construction
vorkers must belong to a union association by lav and there are five
to choose from. UBCJA is one option, as part of the Conseil Provincial
International (the Building Trades), vhich represents about z6 per cent of
all construction and trade vorkers. But there`s also the Iederation des tra
vailleurs du Qubec or ITQ ( per cent); Centrale des syndicats dmocra
tiques or CSIConstruction ( per cent); Confdration des syndicats
nationaux or CSNConstruction ( per cent); and Syndicat Qubcois de
la construction or SQC (four per cent).
Of these, the ITQCarpenters is the largest vith approximately z,ooo
members, compared to UBCJA`s ,zoo provincial members. As an interest
ing side note, ITQ didn`t exist until ,8, vhen its members split off from
UBCJA in a fervour of nationalism and provincial independence to create a
Quebecbased organisation.
About every three years (nov every four years, as of Iecember zo),
construction vorkers vote on vhich union they vant to belong to. Ior the
last vote in zoo,, James Smith
sent Zarbatany to Quebec to
lobby for UBCJA and encourage
vorkers to either remain mem
bers or become nev members.
This vas Zarbatany`s second lob
bying effort in Quebec. In zoo6,
Martyn Piper, executive secre
tary treasurer of the Alberta Regional Council of Carpenters and Allied
Workers (ARCCAW), also sent him to Quebec in an attempt to convince
the ITQ not to sign the CNRL deal under Iivision 8 vhich took avay
ITQ members` right to doubletime pay. (ITQ signed
but UBCJA continues to refuse these terms.)
It may seem strange for Alberta to take such an interest in vhich union
Quebec carpenters choose. After all, they`re all unions and ve`re all broth
ers (and sisters), right? But Zarbatany points out some big differences.
While the UBCJA is quite villing to compete for projects on the basis of its
members` skills, it does not believe in competing for vork vith lover pay
and fever benefits and conditions as other Quebec unions do.
ITQ is the largest skilled labour provider in Quebec, but they`ve aban
doned a basic principle behind our collective agreement, that one union
carpenter does not compete for vages vith another union carpenter,"
Zarbatany explains. They offer vorkers less vhich creates an unfair
playing field. ITQ is competing on vages, not on skills."
Undercutting union rates and benefits is a concern for all union mem
bers, but here`s hov it directly impacts Alberta`s membership. As the
ITQ recently stated in the =_^dbUQ\7QjUddU, their goal is to expand across
Canada to gain vork on major projects, including those in Alberta`s oil
sands," says Zarbatany. They make deals vith Quebec`s major contrac
tors, and more and more those contractors are moving across Canada,
especially into Alberta." And they have the money to do it. The ITQ has a
$obillion solidarity fund that they may use to support this initiative.
Offering vorkers less, but still vithin a union environment, is a creative
loophole that some Alberta clients are eager to explore. They can still bid
on major projects, but vithout paying the UBCJAAlberta union rate, mak
ing them more likely to vin the project.
It`s spreading like a virus," says Zarbatany. We have nothing against
Quebec vorkers. They`re good guys and they`re skilled. But most of them
don`t realize they`re vorking for less. Once educated on the facts, many
turn to UBCJA after they find out their union leaders are making
sveetheart deals vith contractors."
The threat became even stronger in June, vhen the ITQ offi
cially announced its alliance vith the Communications, Lnergy and
Papervorkers Union of Canada (CLP), vhich effectively extends its
reach across Canada. This nev national council, knovn as the Canadian
Construction Unions Council (CCUC), vill become the largest group of
constructionsector union vorkers in the country, representing 8o,ooo
members. CCUC says it vill push to ensure that Canadian vorkers are
hired from its large pool of skilled vorkers before the call is put out for
temporary foreign vorkers. Which all sounds good, but at vhat price?
That`s vhy ve need to make a stand in Quebec and fight for more
members," says Zarbatany. If Quebec is supplying qualified union
vorkers to our oil sands projects, ve vant those union vorkers to be
UBCJA members earning the same rate and benefits as our Alberta
members."
In zoo,, UBCJA`s efforts
to attract more members in
Quebec paid off, vith o
nev members. Unfortunately
UBCJA fears it could lose those
hardearned gains, and more,
after the zoz vote, because of
recent, vell, issues."
We shall vord this section carefully, since it`s currently before the
courts. UBCJA did vell in the zoo, voting period, but since then its
members have been unhappy. Read betveen the lines, but here`s vhat
happened. In Iebruary zo, Rejean Chalifoux, the former executive
secretary treasurer of UBCJA in Quebec, vas terminated. The offi
cial cause is listed as breach of trust" and misleading the United
Brotherhood on certain financial expenditures."
As UBCJA vicepresident James Smith said in a letter to Quebec
members, Under Rejean Chalifoux, the dues money vas not being
spent on representatives, job site visits and servicing members but on
excessive vages (over $oo,ooo) and perks for favoured employees
vho did not do their jobs." As vell, Urgel Iesjardins, the UBCJA repre
sentative at that time from the Gatineau region, vas refusing to coop
erate vith a reciprocity agreement negotiated to help Quebec members
find vork in the Ottava area.
Within a veek of Chalifoux`s termination, both he and Iesjardins
vere vorking for the ITQCarpenters Local ,, vhere they attempted
to attack UBCJA`s good name. The ITQ has a habit of hiring reps once
terminated," says Zarbatany.
Irav your ovn conclusions, but the result is that after cleaning
house, the Quebec regional council is nov functioning as a strong,
productive team led by Zarbatany and is doing all it can to regain mem
bers` trust. At the time of this article, Quebec construction vorkers
vere voting for the first time by mailin ballot and the outcome vas
unknovn.
Strong support for the UBCJA in Quebec vould be good nevs for
Quebec`s construction vorkers and for all construction union mem
bers in Alberta and across Canada. The UBCJA members in Quebec
stand side by side vith all UBCJA members across Canada in respect
ing the terms and conditions of our collective agreement, and promot
ing UBCJA values," says Zarbatany.
ITQ is the largest skilled labour provider in
Quebec, but they've abandoned a basic principle
behind our collective agreement, that one union
carpenter does not compete for wages with
another union carpenter."

ocal vq6o is getting closer to launching its automatic
dispatch system, announces a nev training partner and is
continuing vith its efforts to recruit more young journey
men and apprentices into the trade.
Auto-oispatch System Closer
Most member data including name, contact information and
training certification, among other things has been entered into
our nev automatic dispatch system`s database, and our computer
consultants are preparing for extensive pretesting.
It`s critical that vhen ve bring the nev system online, it
vorks smoothly, so testing is a critical and timeconsuming phase.
But ve`re still on track to put the nev system to vork tovard the
end of zoz.
When it`s operational, members vill be able to connect to jobs
through the veb and by text, email or telephone. You`ll knov
exactly vhere you are on the outofvork list, and you`ll see job
postings. If you`re high enough on the outofvork list, you`ll be
able to preselect a listed job the night before by telephone, or
actually select the job if you`re online.
Alignment 1raining-LuS!
The quality of our training staff helped to convince a major union
employer, IT Services, to partner vith the Provincial Training
Centre in offering their Local 6o millvrights a broadscope
course in alignment.
This fiveday course (June 8zz) involved much more than
the physical operation of various types of alignment equipment.
Participants left the course vith heightened avareness of many
factors that can turn vhat should be a successful alignment into
a failure.
IT Services is active on the Suncor Iirebag and Nexxen oil
sands projects.
Millwrights of the luture!
I vant our members to continue to be avare of the increasingly
urgent need to recruit more young journeymen and apprentices
into our trade.
While the demand for our skills vill increase as huge nev or
expansion megaprojects are built in Alberta, many factors threaten
us vith loss of market share if ve don`t keep our numbers up, and
increase them to keep pace vith demand.
L
Many older members are retiring. In fact,
over the next five years, ve`ll lose approxi
mately zooplus of our boomer generation
members to their velldeserved retirements.
Later generations vere much smaller
in number than the boomers, so there are
fever young people from vhich to recruit
nev members. And the young people of
today have a much vider career choice than
their parents did. Technical, computer,
electronic and sciencebased industries
offer them inside vork and decent pay, and
those industries are competing hard for
young people`s attention.
We must get out into junior high and high
schools to talk to young men and vomen,
their teachers and parents.
Millvright apprenticeship offers an
education pathvay to a highly desirable
career, one that promises job stability, great
pay and lifelong opportunities for training
and upgrading.
Aside from maintaining the quality of our
vorkmanship, our training and the safety
of our members, there can be no more
important priority than turning on" young
people to the bright future in a millvright
ing career.

Scaffolder Competition Saturday, June z, and again
we here at the ACTC and Regional Council are very im
pressed with the competitors and their level of skill. The carpenters
built a rustic wood storage shed in about ; hours!;. The scaffolders
drew, estimated and built a timed pro|ect, as well as both categories
completed a theory exam, with builders' level and transit exercises
for the carpenters as well.
Congratulations to scaffolder contestants Brad Hollingsworth
st;, Ianiel Millard znd; and Jared Newman rd;. Carpenter
first place went to Kyle Hoogendorn, with Matthew Rondot taking
second place and Iustin Hertlein third. Kyle now has the distinct
honour of representing Alberta at this year's National Apprentice
ship Contest, which we will be hosting at Louise McKinney park in
downtown Ldmonton on Saturday, August z. Be sure to come down
and check it out. We want to get as many people there as we can and
raise some public awareness of what it is we do as an organization,
and to let our best carpenter, millwright and drywall apprentices
new JM; show us their skills under the big top tent. If you would like
to volunteer some of your time, please let me know as we could use
some good hands for the setup and takedown of our event.
Carpentry, scaffolder and various other courses are running full
steam ahead at all three of our centres, with noshows still posing
some challenges in all of our offerings. You will see some information
regarding the noshow fee policy in this issue of 8QbT8Qd page z;.
Please become familiar with it and spread the message that noshows
to classes you have registered for are unacceptable. They end up
hurting everyone, especially that person who is waiting for training
and misses out due to someone not showing up and taking that spot.
There is also a financial loss that the individual in question will be
responsible for.
If you are looking to get into a class that is scheduled as full as
we populate classes from the respective wait lists we create;, please
feel free to contact our registration department at extension zz6
and ask if there are any cancellations there usually are; and get the
training you need!
Have a prosperous and safe summer, and I hope to see you and
your family August z at Louise McKinney Park for this year's
National Apprenticeship Competition taking place from 8 to p.m.
Wear your union colours and share in the pride we create every year
with this great event! Grab some lunch from our vendors and help
support our charities of choice for this event, Habitat for Humanity

You have some knovledge, you`re giving it to the student,
and vhat they do vith that gift is totally up to them," he
explains. It`s vhen that student puts the gift into practice, taking,
say, a lesson on laying out a roof rafter and applying the skills they`ve
learned into a successful project that shovs Shav he`s done his job.
When the students recognize their ovn progress or learning and they
feel that sense of accomplishment and satisfaction, that makes me
happy," he says.
It vas alvays Shav`s dream to become a teacher, and thanks to
ARCCAW, that dream has become a reality. The yearold Nova Scotia
native recently celebrated his oneyear anniversary as an instructor vith
the union. Mentored by head instructor Wilf Pipke, Shav spent his first
year teaching carpentry, and since June, has been training under Greg
Smith to teach scaffolding as vell.
Groving up in Halifax, Shav discovered a passion for residential
carpentry vhile vorking alongside his grandfather, vho built houses.
When he finished high school, Shav vanted to become a teacher, so he
enrolled in the arts program at Saint Mary`s University. But after tvo
years, he realized he`d rather do something more handson. He svitched
gears and jumped into the oneyear carpentry program at Nova Scotia
Community College, vhich put him on the road to earning his Red Seal.
He completed his apprenticeship in his hometovn vith avardvinning
homebuilder Savlor Construction before getting into finish carpentry.
In zoo6, Shav moved vest to Ldmonton and joined the union
almost as soon as he arrived. He earned his scaffolding ticket through
the union`s journeyman scaffolding upgrade program in order to be
more versatile. Lven as he dedicated himself to the trades, he alvays
kept teaching in the back of his mind. Shav kept in contact vith Len
Bryden, director of training and apprenticeship, trying to find volunteer
opportunities vith the training program. Lventually, a job opening came
up and Bryden encouraged Shav to apply. The rest is history.
Shav believes education is a key part of a good tradesperson`s training,
ensuring that they emerge vith a vellrounded skill set, including shop,
theory, blueprint and math. The people that don`t go to school, they
may be great on the tools but if you ask them to do a draving or some
math, they may be lacking. School really addresses all those areas and
makes sure that they get up to a certain standard," he says.
And education is something a person can alvays build on, he says.
In fact, Shav is still actively learning himself: the instructor is enrolled
in the Becoming a Master Instructor program at the Northern Alberta
Institute of Technology. And vhat about that halffinished university
degree? Shav hasn`t dismissed it yet, hoping he`ll one day graduate vith
a degree in education. I support lifelong learning. You`re never too old
to start," he says.

ticketed carpenter, vho recently earned his scaffolding
ticket, is vell on his vay to becoming a project manager
and it`s a combination of education and hard vork on the job site
that vill get him there.
Randhava picked up carpentry as a summer job after
completing high school, joining Local zoo in zoo6. He realized
he enjoyed it and soon enrolled in NAIT`s fouryear carpentry
program, transferring over to Local z in Iebruary zoo,. A year
and a half later, he earned his Red Seal in carpentry.
While still a carpentry apprentice, Randhava became avare
of hov much scaffolding vork vas available through the union.
A good scaffolder vill never be out of vork," he explains. In
April zoo,, he began training scaffolding as vell, attending
classes at the Alberta Carpenters Training Centre in zoo, zo
and zoz. He obtained his journeyman ticket in May.
Learning in the classroom, as vell as on the job site, has given
Randhava the indepth understanding of the trade he needs
to take his career vhere he vants it to go. In particular, gaining
experience in different types of carpentry rather than focusing
on just one aspect has proved beneficial.
Taking advantage of the education and getting certified
just makes sense, he says. I knov a lot of people that could be
journeymen but they just don`t go to school. Lveryone makes
excuses, but at the end of the day, the more tickets you have,
the better you are and the better your resum looks."
Randhava practises vhat he preaches. At such a young
age, he`s completed an impressive number of courses and
certifications outside of his journeyman designations, including
confined space and avareness, fall protection, first aid and CPR,
rigging and hoisting, and more.
Come September, he`ll be diving into the project management
certificate program offered at both NAIT and the University
of Alberta. The certificate vill help Randhava land a related
entrylevel job and earn his Project Management Professional
(PMP) designation. In the future, he also hopes to earn a
construction technology or administration certificate, a national
construction safety officer ticket, and a Blue Seal certification
for achievement in business competencies.
Ior Randhava, vorking on the tools is just a means to an
end as he vorks his vay up in the field: Nov I have a lot of
0
experience in construction and in the trade, so I knov the theory from
the ground up," he says.
Working hard and taking advantage of educational opportunities
has gotten Randhava far, and vill continue to help him advance his
career. And knoving vhat education has done for him, he has no plans
on forgetting it once he`s managing projects himself. In fact, he already
intends to emphasize education during the hiring process. When I
run my sites," he says, I vill give priority to the ones that have made
an effort to better themselves."

Larly millvrights vere quite different from the millvrights of today. In the ,th and 8th centuries, millvrights
vere master craftsman vho completely designed and constructed mills. Pictured above, this ,8o photo depicts the
Wicklevood High St. Tover Windmill in Norfolk, Lngland. It vas built in 886 by Richard Mann but ceased vorking
in ,z. In ,,, the vindmill vas restored and opened to the public. Today`s millvrights have built their craft on this
centuriesold tradition that relies on an utmost level of precision.
