Susquehanna River Valley

BY Jessica Benhamou hether you want to challenge a mountain lion to a staring contest, plunge into the largest river on the east coast, or feel your heart drop out of your stomach as you race and rattle along on the Phoenix Roller Coaster like a bat out of hell, the Susquehanna River Valley has it all. This criss-crossing river of blue, which slices across the rolling landscapes as if the land itself was liquid, is less than a three-hour drive from New York. You can boat, fish, water ski, Jet Ski, kayak you name it undisturbed, for over 13 miles. The Susquehanna River Valley is home to all kinds of exotic wildlife. A whole kingdom of sleek and suave mambas, vipers, cobras, and pythons awaits visitors at Reptiland, as well as Butterfly and Animatronic Dinosaur Exhibits during the summer. At the refuge park for wild animals, T and Ds Cats, the pluckiest can, at 8 feet away, contemplate the razor-sharp canines on their lions and tigers. If this is too close for comfort, hop on a Jurassic Park style tour at Lake Tobias, where you can watch the emus, ostriches, and deer from the safety of a convertible school bus. The petting zoo offers yet another wildlife alternative for those with young children, granting them the opportunity to befriend lovable farm animals. One of

the regions most popular family destinations is the Amusement Resort in Elysburg, Knoebels, one of the few remaining free admission amusement parks in the U.S., which has over 50 rides including The Phoenix, recently ranked as the number two top wooden roller coaster in the country by Amusement Today. For art lovers and theatergoers, national and international artists or productions are showcased and performed at the Williamsport Community Art Center, the Williamsport Symphony Orchestra, the Degenstein Gallery and Degenstein Center Theater at Susquehanna University, to name a few. Take a stroll downtown, overflowing with boutique shops, quaint dining venues, and historical Victorian buildings. There are hundreds of antique dealers and mills as well as four annual antique festivals. When the sun sets, award-winning, fine-dining restaurants are just around the corner, offering all kinds of cuisines, including traditional Pennsylvania-Dutch dishes. So why wait? Overnight venues include tent-camping, rustic and high-end cabins for romantic getaways, historic bed and breakfasts and inns, spacious homes and of course, familiar hotel franchises. At just under 200 miles away from the city, about a three-hour drive, Susquehanna River Valley is the perfect weekend getaway.

The Inn at Pocono Manor

I
f youre looking to escape in the mountains without springing for a plane ticket, the idyllic Inn at Pocono Manor offers yearround outdoor activities just two hours north of the city in the picturesque Pocono Mountains. Along with shooting, hiking, fishing, golf and horseback riding, the Inn at Pocono Manor offers a full service spa for visitors who would prefer to spend their vacation being pampered with hydrotherapy, aromatherapy, tanning, waxing and a variety of massage services offered by a certified, professionally trained staff using the most luxurious spa products available including the Inns signature line. Visitors have been seeking refuge from the stresses of the city at the Inn at Pocono Manor for over 110 years and this rich history is on display throughout the Inn with antiques dotting the rooms and common areas. Though there is no shortage of rustic charms, the Inn recently underwent a $5 million renovation ensuring all the most modern comforts and amenities. I love the sense of history, recalling an earlier era when guests arrived for the summer, said Ken Ellens of the Inn at Pocono Manor. What I love about The Inn is the escape one feels when driving up the mountain to the main lodge, which is an historic building wonderfully preserved. The Inn at Pocono Manor is one of Pennsylvanias historic springs resorts and the grounds include picturesque natural waterfalls, crystal clear springs, 3,000 acres of trails and dramatic views of the Delaware Water Gap. One can still visit an original spring house on the property, Mr. Ellens said. Though the Inn is a perfect destination for families with a variety of kid-friendly activities, it is also an ideal location for a romantic retreat or wedding in one of the lush ballrooms with mountain views that can accommodate groups of 25 t
