SECTION 413-06: Horn DIAGNOSIS AND TESTING

2000 Crown Victoria/Grand Marquis Workshop Manual Procedure revision date: 06/21/1999

Horn Refer to Wiring Diagrams Cell 44, Horn/Cigar Lighter/Clock for schematic and connector information. Special Tool(s) 73 Digital Multimeter or equivalent 105-R0051

Inspection and Verification 1. Verify the customer concern by operating the system. 2. Visually inspect for the following obvious signs of mechanical or electrical damage.

Verify that the horn retaining bolt is tight Verify that the horns are not touching surrounding sheet metal or other components Damaged steering wheel pad horn switch (part of driver side air bag module [043B13])

3. If the fault is not visually evident, verify the symptom and refer to the Symptom Chart.

PINPOINT TEST A: THE HORN DOES NOT SOUND

CONDITIONS

A1 CHECK ANTI-THEFT SYSTEM OPERATION (IF EQUIPPED) NOTE: If the vehicle is not equipped with anti-theft, go to Step A2.

Operate the anti-theft panic feature.

Does the horn sound?

Yes GO to A6. No GO to A2. A2 CHECK POWER SUPPLY TO HORN RELAY CIRCUIT 460 (YE/LB)

Measure the voltage between horn relay connector Pin 86, Circuit 460 (YE/LB), harness side and ground; and between horn relay connector Pin 30, Circuit 460 (YE/ LB), harness side and ground.

Are the voltages greater than 10 volts?

Yes GO to A3. No REPAIR the circuit. TEST the system for normal operation. A3 CHECK HORN RELAY Check the horn relay; refer to Wiring Diagrams Cell 149.

Is the horn relay OK?

Yes GO to A4. No INSTALL a new horn relay. TEST the system for normal operation. A4 CHECK STEERING WHEEL PAD HORN SWITCH SIGNAL TO HORN RELAY

Measure the resistance between horn relay connector Pin 85, Circuit 1 (DB), harness side and ground under the following conditions: Steering Wheel Pad Switch Position Pressed Released

Resistance Less Than 5 Ohms Greater Than 10,000 Ohms

Are the resistances correct?

Yes GO to A5. No GO to A6. A5 CHECK WIRE BETWEEN HORN RELAY AND HORN(S)

Measure the resistance between horn relay connector Pin 87, Circuit 6 (YE/LG), harness side and horn C1000, Circuit 6 (YE/LG), harness side.

Measure the resistance between horn relay connector Pin 87, Circuit 6 (YE/LG), harness side and ground.

Is the resistance less than 5 ohms between the horn relay connector and the horn connector (s), and greater than 10,000 ohms between the horn relay connector and ground?

Yes INSTALL a new horn. TEST the system for normal operation. No

REPAIR the circuit. TEST the system for normal operation. A6 CHECK WIRE BETWEEN HORN RELAY AND AIR BAG SLIDING CONTACT CIRCUIT 1 (DB) Deactivate the air bag system; refer to Section 501-20B.

Air Bag Sliding Contact C283

LCM C2026 Measure the resistance between the air bag sliding contact C283 Pin 3, Circuit 1 (DB), harness side and horn relay connector Pin 85, Circuit 1 (DB), harness side.

Measure the resistance between LCM C2026 Pin 4, Circuit 1 (DB), harness side and horn relay connector Pin 85, Circuit 1 (DB), harness side.

Are the resistances less than 5 ohms?

Yes GO to A7. No REPAIR the circuit. TEST the system for normal operation. A7 CHECK AIR BAG SLIDING CONTACT Disconnect the steering wheel switch harness from the air bag sliding contact. Measure the resistance between upper air bag sliding contact connector Pin 5 (DB) (component side), and air bag sliding contact C283 Pin 8 (DB) (component side).

Measure the resistance between upper air bag sliding contact connector Pin 4 (BK) (component side), and air bag sliding contact C283 Pin 1, (DG/OG) (component side).

Are the resistances less than 5 ohms?

Yes GO to A8. No INSTALL a new air bag sliding contact. REFER to Section 50120B. TEST the system for normal operation. A8 CHECK STEERING WHEEL SWITCH HARNESS

Measure the resistance of the DB wire between the steering wheel pad horn switch connector harness side and steering wheel switch harness connector Pin 5 (DB) harness side.

Measure the resistance of the BK wire between the steering wheel pad horn switch connector harness side and steering wheel switch harness connector Pin 4 (BK) harness side.

Are the resistances less than 5 ohms?

Yes GO to A9. No INSTALL a new steering wheel switch harness. TEST the system for normal operation. A9 CHECK STEERING WHEEL PAD HORN SWITCH

Measure the resistance between the horn pad switch connector Pin 1 and Pin 2 under the following conditions: Steering Wheel Pad Horn Switch Position Pressed Released

Resistance Less Than 5 Ohms Greater Than 10,000 Ohms

Are the resistances correct?

Yes GO to A10. No INSTALL a new driver side air bag module. REFER to Section 50120B. TEST the system for normal operation. A10 CHECK WIRE BETWEEN AIR BAG SLIDING CONTACT AND SPEED CONTROL SERVO CIRCUIT 848 (DG/OG)

Measure the resistance between air bag sliding contact C283 Pin 1, Circuit 848 (DG/OG), harness side and speed control servo C234 Pin 6, Circuit 848 (DG/OG) harness side.

Is the resistance less than 5 ohms?

Yes GO to A11. No REPAIR the circuit. TEST the system for normal operation. A11 CHECK SPEED CONTROL SERVO GROUND CIRCUIT 676 (PK/OG) Measure the resistance between speed control servo C234 Pin 10, Circuit 676 (PK/OG), harness side and ground.

Is the resistance less than 5 ohms?

Yes INSTALL a new speed control servo. REFER to Section 310-03. TEST the system for normal operation. No REPAIR the circuit. TEST the system for normal operation.

PINPOINT TEST B: THE HORN SOUNDS CONTINUOUSLY

Does the horn continue to sound?

Yes REPAIR the circuit. TEST the system for normal operation. No GO to B2.

B2 CHECK HORN RELAY Check the horn relay; refer to Wiring Diagrams Cell 149

Is the horn relay OK?

Yes REINSTALL the horn relay. GO to B3 . No INSTALL a new horn relay. TEST the system for normal operation. B3 CHECK CIRCUIT 6 (YE/LG)

Does the horn continue to sound?

Yes GO to B4. No RECONNECT air bag sliding contact C283. GO to B5 . B4 CHECK THE LIGHTING CONTROL MODULE (LCM)

Does the horn continue to sound?

Yes REPAIR Circuit 1 (DB) for short to ground. TEST the system for normal operation. No INSTALL a new lighting control module (LCM). REFER to Section 419-10. TEST the system for normal operation. B5 CHECK AIR BAG SLIDING CONTACT Deactivate the air bag system; refer to Section 501-20B. Disconnect the steering wheel switch harness from the air bag sliding contact.

Does the horn continue to sound?

Yes INSTALL a new air bag sliding contact. REFER to Section 501-20B. TEST the system for normal operation. No GO to B6. B6 CHECK STEERING WHEEL SWITCH HARNESS Visually inspect the steering wheel switch harness for short or damage.

Is the steering wheel switch harness OK?

Yes INSTALL a new driver side air bag module. REFER to Section 501-20B. TEST the system for normal operation. No INSTALL a new steering wheel switch harness. TEST the system for normal operation.
