GLOBAL MARKET FOR MEDICAL DEVICE COATINGS TO REACH NEARLY $8 BILLION IN 2017 Wellesley, Mass.

According to a new technical market research report, MEDICAL DEVICE COATINGS (HLC049C) from BCC Research (www.bccresearch.com), the global market for medical device coatings is estimated to be worth nearly $5.8 billion in 2012. This figure is projected to reach nearly $8 billion in 2017, a compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of 6.7% between 2012 and 2017. The medical device coatings market can be broken down into four regions: the United States, European Union, other developed nations, and the rest of the world. The United States is projected to account for nearly $3 billion in 2012 and should reach nearly $4.4 billion in 2017, a CAGR of 8.1%. The European Union is projected to account for nearly $1.5 billion in 2012 and should reach nearly $2.1 billion in 2017, a CAGR of 7%. The segment made up of other developed nations is projected to account for $939 million in 2012 and should reach $1.1 billion in 2017, a CAGR of 4%. The rest of the world is projected to account for $375 million in 2012 and should reach $379 million in 2017, a CAGR of 0.2%. A highly specialized niche within the U.S. painting and coating industry little more than a decade ago, the medical device coatings business has become a valuable contributor to improving healthcare. Today, as many as four out of five medical devices require at least one type of coating product or treatment process. Coatings that enhance biocompatibility have improved the quality of implanted electronic devices and artificial joints. Antimicrobial-coated catheters and examining room surfaces have become frontline defenses against antibiotic-resistant infections. The medical device coatings industry is both an old and new business. The original function of coatings was similar to their uses in other industries, as means of providing protective and aesthetically pleasing finishes to metal structures. With the advent of blood storage and the wider use of catheters came the demand for functional coatings, initially lubricity. The introduction of the implantable cardiac pacemaker opened new business opportunities, with functional coatings becoming more specialized as devices warranted. This study will be of interest to stakeholders in the medical device industry; the coatings and surface treatments industries; suppliers of alloys, ceramics, polymers, and other materials used in the manufacture of coatings; manufacturers of chemicals, pharmaceuticals, and energy sources

that can be incorporated into coatings; coating and medical device importers; medical device contract manufacturers; and the regulatory community and healthcare policy analysts. It will also provide useful insights for those exploring investment opportunities in what remains a vibrant and growing segment of the medical device industry despite regulatory and economic uncertainty.
