Were pleased to share an essay from an outstanding student in our community:

ve moved around a lot. Its a pretty common occurrence for a military family. You live in some out of the way place for three years, and you make it homey. Soon you pack it all up in the blink of an eye, and with a Sayonara and another picture to add to the photo album, Homes over the Years, voila. Youre off to another new home. One would think that with so much relocating, the idea of home would not even resonate with me. I couldnt disagree more. I cant say I have a favorite. Its almost as if choosing a favorite between children; its morally wrong in a sense. And if you do have a favorite, you absolutely must whisper out of earshot of the others and justify later why you love them as your second, third, and fourth favorite. Taking the backfire of others though, I would call Virginia my favorite. The house on the cul-de-sac, it was called. The backyard was the epitome of backyards: the trails, tire swing, flower garden; even a little

A Homey Memory
bridge over a small river in the back near the fence. Fond memories are had from the backyard of that home. Practicing Kung-Fu with my dad (pretending he was the ever forsaken enemy, and I the masterful warrior princess), endless games of tag with my sister and the bunnies of the backyard (always pretending one was the rabbit from Alice and Wonderland), and hours of riding the tire swing. Walking away from the memories of this home on the cul-de-sac seemed surreal; almost like a waking dream. Washington is the place Ive stayed the longest, and every day I am still amazed that Im still here. Five years to some people may seem like a drop in the bucket but to me, it is eternity plus some. Most become sick of a state after a while, but here, I find the beauties rather than the flaws. When you move around so much, you learn to cherish what you have, rather than what you dont. I cant say I love the endless rain, but I do enjoy the way the air smells after a fresh rain, the blossoming buds of cherry trees when spring awakens, and the enormous evergreens my dad dubs, The Gentle Giants. The trees seem alive here, and while waking up and looking out my kitchen window, past the golf course and toward the trees, I cannot help but smile. With the potted plants everywhere, the green painted walls, and the landscape paintings, my home here almost seems to emulate the trees. I know that whenever I see a beautiful nature scene in the future, the memories of this home will come to my mind. Ive moved around a lot. Many think that since Ive been to so many places, I dont know what home is. I suppose I could agree with that reasoning, but instead I say to those people, Home isnt a place; its a collection of memories.
