INTRODUCTION WelcometothethirdannualbirdreportforLesvosLesvosBirds2011.Thereporthasbeencollated, writtenandeditedbymyself. BIRDRECORDSUSEDFORTHISREPORT Mypleaforrecordscontinuestobeheardwiththe2011databasecontainingover22,000records.Thisisa tremendousachievementandcompareswiththenumberofrecordssomeBritishcountyreportsreceive. LesvosresidentTerryRobinsonagaincontubutedahugenumberofrecords(48%ofthosereceived).Terry inputshisdailysightingsstraightintoOrnithotopos,theGreekonlinerecordingsectionofworldbirds.org operatedbyBirdLifeIntetnational.OtherGreekbirderscontributetotheLesvosrecordsonOrnithotopos, includingtheotherLesvosresidentbirder,EleniGalinou.Intotal,Ornithotoposrecordsmakeuparound 55%oftheLesvosrecordsdatabade. ObservadoisanotheronlinerecordssubmissionsiteandStevenWytemasetupasectionforLesvosin 2010(http://lesvos.observado.org).Thishasprovedverypopular,especiallywithDutchbirders,andthis datasetcontributedover5,000recordsforthereport. Theremainingrecordswerecollatedfrommyself,frommyownrecords,theLesvosBirdinglogattheHotel Pasiphae(SkalaKallonis),recordssentdirecttomeorgleanedfromreportsIhavecomeacrossonthe internet. Thankyoutoeveryonewhohascontributedonewayoranother.AlistofallthoseIknowappearsunder acknowldgementsbelow. COVERAGEIN2011 In2010coveragebenefitedfromahandfulofbirderswhovisitedinearlyspringfromlateMarchintoearly April,producingsomefantasticrecords(e.g.YellowbrowedWarbler,GreaterSpottedEagles,early migrants).Wehadnosuchcoveragein2011withthefirstofthespringbirdersarrivingon11Aprilandthe firstoftheUKchartersarrivingon14April. Asinmostyearsseveralbirderswerepresentduringsummerbetween19June17Julycontriburingsome importantrecords. Autumncoveragecommencedon27Augustwithquiteafewvisitingbirderspresentto12October. Asever,thetwowinterperiodswerethepreserveofthetworesidentbirdersTerryRobinsonandEleni Galinou. SUBMITTINGYOURBIRDRECORDS Iwillcontinuetocollaterecords(asdetailedabove)forfutureyears.Allrecordsofrareandscarcespecies (seekeytotheSystematicListbelow)willbefollowedupandpassedontotheLesvosBirdsRecords Committee(LBRC)orforGreeknationalrarities,forwardedtotheHellenicRaritiesCommittee(HRC). THENEWENVIRONMENTALCENTREATSKALAKALLONIS Veryfewbirdersvisitedthecentrein2011,andIsuspectthatduetotheongoingeconomiccrisisinGreece, thecentrewillnotbeopenin2012.IfitisIwillpostnewsontheLesvosBirdingwebsite (www.lesvosbirding.com)andthevariousbirdingforumsinearlyApril. DRIVINGOFFTHEMAINROADS Careshouldbetakenwhenleavingthemainmetalled/tarmacroadsanddrivingalongthedirtroadsand tracks.Somecarhirecompaniesdonotincludethesedirtroadsandtracksintheirinsurancecovercheck yourcarhiredetails.Eventhosethatdocoverthisnowhaveadisclaimerstatingthatyouareliabletothe fullcostofrepairingtheundersideofahirevehiclebecauseofpreviousproblemswithdriversdriving acrosscountry. Ifyoudochosetodrivealongsomeoftheminordirttracks,pleasetakecare.Evenifamap,mybookor someoneindicatestoyouthatitissafetodoso,trackscanquicklydeteriorate,andcanchange considerablyfromyeartoyear,sopleasetakecare. TRESSPASSINGANDDISTURBANCEOFBREEDINGBIRDS Wecontinuetoseeunnecessarytrespassanddisturbanceofbreedingbirdsinsomeareas.Theproblems encounteredin2010(atthePotamiaOlivetreeWarblerandSkalaEresouPendulineTitsites)ledtothe suppressionofsomerecordsofrarebreedingspecies(suchasanotherPendulineTitnestfoundin2011). Wewillcontinuetosuppressanyrecordofrarebreedingspecieswhichwefeelarevulnerableto disturbancefromthefewwrecklessindividuals.Ifyoufindsomethingwhichyouareunsureaboutwhoto tell,thenfeelfreetocontactme(00447767787287)foradvice. Thedisturbanceofrarebreedingbirdsalsohasasecondaryimpact.Manyareasoftheislandareunder increasingpressurefromhunterswhoarebeingrestrictedmoreandmore.Ahuntingbanhasrecently beenplacedontheareasaroundtheKalloniSaltpans,muchtotheangeroflocalhunters.Forbirdersand photographerstothencausedisturbancetotheseprotectedareasunderminesthecasetokeepthesesites huntingfree. Birdersandphotographersareagainrespectivelyaskedtoavoidsuchincidents. NOTESONBIRDINGSITES IneachreportIwillaimtoprovideanysignificantupdatestothemainbirdingsitesmajorchangesin habitat,accessrestrictions,etc.AsstatedinABirdwatchingGuidetoLesvosItryandfollowthenamesused ontheblueRoadEditionsmapoftheisland(whichIrecommendyougettouseonyourvisit).Page numbersrefertothesitepageswithinABirdwatchingGuidetoLesvos. SkalaKallonisPool(p.97) Thepoolremainsaghostofitsformer,gloriousself.Itisovergrownandwithhighwaterlevelswithlittle visiblemargins,andwhenthewaterdoesdrop,manymarginsarenotvisibleduetothetallvegetation. Despitethis,itisstillworthcheckingforwaterfowl,heronsandmarshternsandthesurroundingareastill attractsmanymigrantpasserines. Negotiationswiththeownersregardingthefutureandimprovementofthesitehavesofaryieldednothing fromourendbutwewillcontinuetomaintaincontactjustincasethepossibilitydoesarise.

Christou(Kamares)River(p.98) ThisriverisnamedasChristouRiverontheRoadEditionsmap,butisknownlocallyastheKamaresRiver (andiscalledthisonthenewinformationboardbytheroadbridge).Iwillcontinuetousetheabove presentationonmywebsiteandinreports. In2011FantailedWarblerwasagainfoundbreedingalongthetarckdownthewestsideofthemarsh leadingtotheviewingscreen(inthemarshtotherightoftheshephardsbuildingbeforethescreen). PotamiaValley(p.99) TheminireservoirisnotmarkedinABirdwatchingGuidetoLesvos.Themaponp.101showsthree parkingsites(P).Theminireservoirliesdownatrackontheleftnearthemiddle(P).Thereislimited parkingandviewingisnotthateasythroughthefenceandbushes,butawalkdownfromthemaintrackis worthwhile. MetochiLake(p.102) Parkingremainsanissuehereattimes(usuallyearlymornings).Pleaseparksensiblyleavingenoughroom fortractorsandtruckstopass.Thelargerpullinatthenorthendofthelakeshouldbekeptasfreeas possibletoallowpeopletousethisasaturningpoint. Dontforgetthattheareaaroundthelakeisworthexploring,particularlytheculvertrunningalongthe westernsideofthelakewhichoftenholdsheronsandcrakes.RockNuthatchbreedstothenorthofthe lake.Bothareascanbeviewedifyoutakethecircularwalkaroundthelake(seebookfordetails) KalloniSaltpansarea(p.108) Viewthesaltpansonlyfromtheperimeterroad(inc.thesouthhidejustwestofthesaltworksentrance), thenorthwestcornerhide,theeasttrackandtheAlykesWetlands(seebelow)allroutesmarkedinA BirdwatchingGuidetoLesvos.ViewingfromthemainKalloniMytiliniroadcanbedangerous.Thereisno accesstothefieldsaroundthesaltpansotherthantheeastern(main)AlykesWetlands(seebelow). In2011,thesmallpooltothenorthofthemainKalloniMytiliniroad(betweentheturndownthewest sidefothesaltpansandtheturnnorthtoAgiaParaskeviandNapiValley)provedexcellentforwaders(inc. TemmincksStintandMarshSandpiper)andalsoattractedCitrineWagtailandWaterPipit.Thereisalarge pieceofroughgroundimmediatelytotheeastofthepoolwherecarscanpullin.Viewingisbestdonefrom vehiclesasgettingoutwillonlydisturbthefeedingbirds.Ifwinterrainshavepilledthispooltoits maximum,thenitoverflowstothewestofthemainpoolintoafieldimmediatelyoppositetheturndown thewestsideofthesaltpans.Thisareacanbeviewedonfootviathegatedtrackoppositethesaltpans road. ThoseaccessingthebeachpastthePysosbeachcaf(Ivebeeninformedthatthiscafhasbeenillegally erectedontheNatura2000protectedcoastalstrip)areremindedthatgroundnestingspeciessuchas Stonecurlewoccurhereandbirdersareaskedtotakecaution.RufousBushrobincanoftenbefoundin thetamarisksalongthebeachhere,andyouareaskednottoharassbirdsbypushingthemfrombushto bush.Stayatasensibledistanceandthebirdswillusuallycomeoutandperform. ThetrackoffthemainMytiliniroaddowntheeastsideofthepans(fromthehideintheNEcorner)should onlybeaccessedonfoot.Somebirderscontinuetodrivedownthistrackwithlittleregardforthosebirding onfoot.Ifyoudo,thenyouwillsoonfindthetrackunmanageableandturningroundcanbedifficultyou havebeenwarned.

AlykesWetlands(p.112) TheseasonallyfloodedfieldsonthesouthsideofKalloniSaltpansoppositethemainsaltworksentrance formpartoftheAlykesWetlandsandwereagainarealmagnetforbirdsandbirders.Attimesitcanget verybusy,especiallyalongthetrackbeyondthesaltworksentrancewhichisthemostpopularviewing area.Pleasetakecarewhendrivingpastgroupsofbirdershere,andthoseonfootpleasebeawareof traffic!Pleaseparkononesideoftheroadonly(usuallythepoolsside). Thefieldsandmarsheseastofthesaltworksshouldbeaccessedonfootonly.Parkattheendofthe racetrackbytheconcretebridgethereisplentyofroomformanycars.Careshouldbetakenwhen approachingthesaltpanspermiterfenceasgroundnestingspeciesincludingStonecurlewandKentish Ploverbothbreedinthisarea.Ifindoubt,donotapproachthefencelineandviewfromorneartothe maintrack.Pleasetrytoavoiddisturbingthewadersonthepoolsasthosebirdersarrivingafteryouhave gonewouldliketoenjoythesebirdstoo. Soumouria(KalloniMiniSoccerPitch/ScopsCopsep.115) Nofurthertreethinninghasoccurredheresince2009andthesitecontinuestobethemainsiteforScops Owl. Anotherpleaforphotographersnottogettooclosetoroostingbirds.Severalindividualswithonlypoint andshootcameraswereseengettingfartooclosetotheowlsin2011.Ifyouwitnessanysuchbehaviour askthoseresponsiblepolitelytoretreat.Oncedisturbedbirdsarerarelyrefound. Platania(p.120) NotethatthebestwaytoaccessthePlataniatrackfromtheNapiValleyendistoapproachfromthenorth (iftravellingfromthesouthdrivepasttheturntoPlataniaandthenturnroundsafelyneartherubbishtip andreturnsouthtoapproachfromthenorth). Takecarepullingoffthemainroadontothetrackastheimmediatejunctionwasagainunstablein2010. Thetrackitselfremainspassableformostcarswithcare,butareminderthatyouwillbechargedbyyour hirecompanyforthecompletecostofanydamagedonetotheundersideofahirevehicle! ThedistancesgiveninABirdwatchingGuidetoLesvosareincorrect.Thecattlegridsiteisonlyc.2.5km fromtheroad.Also,ataround2kmthereisaforkinthetrack.Ignoretheturntotheleftandproceedon themaintrack(toright). YoumightthinkaboutparkingoffthemainNapiValleyroad(e.g.atthetrackrunninguptothemastsat Mavria)andwalkingthePlataniatracktothecattlegrid(2.5km).Thisisafabulouswalkwithmanyofthe NapiValleyspecialtiesfoundalongitslength. Kavaki(p.124) ThisremainsthemainsiteforRppellsWarbler.Viewonlyfromthelaybyareasandtheroughtrackup thehillonthesouthside.Pleasedonotenterthescrubareaswherethebirdsbreed. Thisspeciescontinuestodeclineontheisland,mirroringthenationaldeclinethroughoutGreece,withonly threepairsnowpresentinthisarea.

Ipsilou(p.147) TheoldmonasterypathfeaturedinABirdwatchingGuidetoLesvossawanincreaseinusethisyear.Thisis notaproblembutseveralpeopleslippedonthepaththisyear(sheepdroppingsandtroddeninvegetation makesthepebbledsurfaceslippery).Pleasetakecarewhenusingthispath.Mostpeoplechoosetowalk downthepathwhichiscertainlyeasierforbirding. Pleasedonotventureofftheroadsoroldmonasterypath.Apartfromunnecessarilytramplingtheground floraanddisturbingnestingbirds,theslopesarehazardouswithlooserockswhichcouldcauseyouinjury ortoothersiftheyaredislodgedandrolldownthehillsides. Areminderthatphotographyisnotpermittedinsidethechapelinthemonastery.Therewereagain incidentswerepeoplewereejectedthisyear.Also,ifyouaskforthemuseumtobeopened,oryouvisitit whenitis,bepreparedtomakeadonationtothemonastery. Faneromeni(p.151) IamamzedthatsomepeoplearestillseemunabletolocateFaneromeniLowerFord!Itisarrowedonthe maponp.151ofABirdwatchingGuidetoLesvos.AlongthemainFaneromenitracktaketheturndown towardsthebeach(signed)andthentherightturn(signedchapel)andfollowthistotheford. Birderschoosingtowalkalongtherivercontinuetogetaverbalbashingfromotherbirdersforflushing birdstheywerewatching.Walkingalongtheriversjustservestopushbirdsawayfromthemainfordareas wheremostbirderschoosetoviewfrom. PandeleimonasPools ThesepoolslieseveralkmeastofEresosnorthofthemainroadtoMesotopos.ThissiteisntincludedinA BirdwatchingGuidetoLesvos,butnowthepoolsarematuring,morepeoplearestoppingontheroadside hereandviewingfromthecarandbeingrewardedwithsomegoodwetlandspeciesincludingLittleCrakes andheronspecies.Viewonlyfromtheroadsidethereisnoaccesstothepools. Vergias(Chalandra)River(p.162) Thisisanotherriverwithtwonames,soinreportsandonmywebsiteIwillusetheabovepresentationto avoidanydoubt. AchladeriForest(p.167) TwopairsofKrpersNuthatchbredatthetraditionalKofinaspicnicsite(openareawithwhitebuilding). Whilstthisremainsthebestsitetoseethespecies,itisbynomeanstheonlysitewithover600pairsin pinewoodsinthecentralandsoutheasternareasoftheisland.TheforesttracktothenorthofKofinasis alsoworthexploringwithbirdsseenfrequentlyhere(seep.167ofABirdwatchersGuidetoLesvos). KrpersNuthatchcanalsobefoundatnearbyPessaWaterfalls(c.2.5kmsouthofAchladerionthewest sideoftheroadlookfornoticeboardsandfollowforesttrackstofalls). Ididnthearofanyincidentsbetweenphotographersandbirdersatthissitein2011thefirsttroublefree yearforawhile!Ithankallthosewhohaveheededbyadvisethatphotographersarerequestedtorespect boththebirdsaswellasthosewatchingthemandbirdersfornotdisturbingphotographerswhoaresat quietlynearthenest.Ifthereisclearbehaviourfromthebirdssuggestingdisturbancethen photographer(s)shouldbeaskedpolitelytomovefurtheraway.Aresponsiblephotographershouldhave noproblemretreatingifrequested. Asusual,whenthemilitaryareinresidence,donotattempttoenterthesite.
