The Automotive Research Association of India (ARAI) is the nodal center for Research and Development in automotive engineering. ARAIs objectives are:

Background: Life Cycle Assessment is one of the important tool to assess the environmental performance of the vehicle in a holistic manner using cradle to grave approach which enables company to evaluate the environmental impact at various stages of the life cycle of vehicle i.e. raw material extraction, transport, manufacturing of vehicle, use stage and recycling. Life Cycle Assessment approach has been adopted by almost all the major vehicle manufacturers worldwide. The result of the study is being used to set the environmental goals of the next 5-10 years on various environmental impact parameters such as Global warming potential, primary energy consumption, acidification potential etc. Improvements in various processes as well as at different stages of life cycle is evaluated on regular basis in order to achieve the targets.

To carry out R&D work along with development and certification testing. To prepare and harmonize automotive standards. To disseminate information and create a forum for knowledge sharing.
