First Term Exam- Idealistic Proposal re: DreamCatcher

Janrozl Campo BA_Psych3 One of the aims of Psychotherapy is for an individual to understand his whole self, both his conscious and unconscious self. The paradox in this great aim is how can one study something that is not cognized intentionally? How can one study the unconscious? In the Psychoanalytical perspective it can be studied through dreams. That is why dream therapy plays a great role in Psychoanalytic Therapy since dreams are reported to be a playback of our vast unconscious mind. The problem is 90% of our dreams are forgotten 10 minutes after we wake up. There are studies that suggest that waking a person during REM (Rapid Eye Movement) sleep are more likely to recall vivid dreams than those who have had a full sleep but there are also studies stating that deprivation of REM sleep lead to symptoms of Psychosis. It is true that an EEG (electroencephalograph) can record our brain activity but it cannot record the actual dream and the images along with it. This is where the DreamCatcher comes in. In Native America a dream catcher is talisman meant for doing away with nightmares and retaining good dreams. The dream catcher this research proposes is one that catches all dreams both forgotten and recalled. The DreamCatcher is a machine that can record and reflect the images from the dreams. A person undergoing dream analysis can use the machine to record the actual series of dreams while he sleeps and then later on playback the data and analyze it with his therapist. How will this work you ask? With the Parietal Lobe, Radio Signal and a Frequency Amplifier. The Parietal Lobe is responsible for the Visuo-Spatial aspect of cognition, imagery occurs in that part of the brain. So the pictures seen in dreams are processed in that particular area. Radio signaling is the technology used by satellite television to send images through space from the broadcasting station to the satellite dish where a TV set can be found. A Frequency Amplifier is a device that can amplify (increase) the frequency of brain waves. Radio waves operate on about 30 kHz while auditory waves (sound) operate on 4 kHz-21 kHz, the frequency our brain also operates on. Though brainwaves and radio waves dont operate on the same frequency the FA can be used to synchronize the frequency of the brain wave to that of the radio signal and then later on be encrypted and decoded to produce a picture. A headphone like apparatus will be attached to the upper part of the head where the parietal lobe can be found. This headphone like apparatus will be responsible for transmitting the brain waves during the dream phase of the patient. The transmission will then be sent to the FA to match the low frequency to that of a radio signal. After synchronizing the frequencies the transmission will now be sent to a receiver that will encrypt the data into MPEG (Moving Pictures Experts Group) standard. This standard requires data to be compressed into transmissions that a readable through television or moving pictures. The now MPEG file will be decoded into a monitor to show the actual pictures from the dream. Of course a recorder will also be attached to the monitor to document the dream film for further analysis. With the DreamCatcher the unconscious mind can now be opened, explored and studied. Psychoanalysis and Dream Therapy will have reached its full potential and psychology and psychiatry will have a great breakthrough. With the DreamCatcher, scientists can now venture into what was once the unknown.
