THE HISTORY
OF THE NEW YORK PALACE AND CAF
C ommissioned by the n ew y ork i nsuranCe C ompany , New York Palace was built according to the plans of Alajos Hauszmann, Flris Korb and Klmn Giergl. Sndor Steuer a member of a famous coffee-family opened the gem of the building the most beautiful caf in the world on 23rd October, 1894. The ground floor caf became the most splendid part of the imposing palace beside its windows with 16 devilish fauns el Ashmodai the ancient figure of coffee and meditation held the lantern in good style propagating the spirituality of New York Caf this way as well. The majestic building was built in eclectic style relying on Italian renaissance and baroque. As everything was made of marble, bronze, silk and velvet many people compared the building to the palace of the Bavarian King Louis II. The ceiling was decorated with the marvellous panel paintings of Gusztv Mannheimer and a fountain at the entrance by Ferenc Eisenhut, in the halls Venetian chandeliers dazzled visitors. According to the Pest rumour on the opening day a famous writer Ferenc Molnr together with his journalist friends threw the keys of the Caf into the Danube to have it open 24 hours a day. t he C af gained its literary rank when the Harsnyi brohters took over management. The New York from the first decade of the 20th century became renowned as a real literary caf one of the centre of the intellectual life of Budapest. Writers and journalists had their Home Circle here and soon the artists tables were formed. Shortly after, the editorial office of the highest standard literary journal of the age Nyugat (West) found its home here, too. Gyula Krdy, Ferenc Molnr, Zsigmond Mricz, Dezs Kosztolnyi composed their first writings here. An abundance of legendary personal waiters took care of the guests, each knowing intimately the regular guests wishes and habits. t he f irst w orld w ar put an end to the first golden age of the Caf and the Harsnyi brothers transferred management to Vilmos Tarjn. The Caf became one of the most elegant restaurants of the city and once again the centre of social life. After the threat of the world war the Caf temporarily closed its doors but it was reopened under the name of Hungaria in 1954, although not as a Caf but almost in its original splendour.

Nowadays
i n f ebruary 2001 the Italian Boscolo Group undertook the reconstruction of the legendary building. The new owners decided to open the Caf together with the renewed Palace. From spring 2006 the New York Caf welcomes its guests in all its former splendour recalling the milieu of the beginning of the 20th century with an addititonal modern design touch.

STORIA DEL PALAZZO E DEL CAFF NEW YORK

il palazzo new york venne costruito sulincarico della Compagnia di Assicurazioni New York, in base ai disegni di Alajos Hauszmann, Flris Korb ed Alajos Giegl. Il cuore delledificio, il caff pi bello del mondo venne aperto il 23 ottobre 1894 da Sndor Steuer, membro di una famiglia molto famosa con una lunga tradizione nel caff. La parte pi maestosa delledificio divenne il caff al pianoterra, accanto alle finestre del quale si trovano ancora oggi 16 fauni diabolici in bronzo (Luciferi) El Asmodj, mitica figura del caff e del pensiero -, rendendo pubblica anche in questo modo la spiritualit del Caff New York. Limponente edfico dignitoso vcenne costruito in stile eclettico che si basa sul rinascimento italiano ed anche le parti interne vennero disegnate sott il segno dellecletticit storica. Vennero utilizzati marmo, bronzo, seta e velluto e per il grandioso effetto dinsieme tanti lebbero paragonato al palazzo del re bevarese Luigi II. Il soffitto del caff fu decorato con affreschi meravigliosi di Gusztv Mannheimer e Ferenc Eisenhut; allentrata una fontana affascin i visitatori e nelle sale i lampadari veneziani diffondevano una luce magica. Secondo una leggenda di Pest il giorno dellapertura Ferenc Molnr, insieme agli altri colleghi scrittori e giornalisti dallumore scherzoso, gett nel Danubio le chiavi del caff, significando con questo gesto, che il caff dovesse rimanere aperto giorno e notte. il Caff ottenne il rango letterario quando lo presero in gestione i fratelli Harsnyi. Il New York divenne un vero caff letterario, uno dei centri della vita intellettuale della capitale a partire dal primo decennio del secolo ventesimo. Qui ebbe luogo il Otthon Kre degli scrittori e dei giornalisti.; inoltre presto nacquero anche i tavoli degli artisti. Di la poco venne spostata qui anche la redazione del Nyugat (Occidente), il periodico letterario pi famoso dellepoca: Gyula Krdy, Ferenc Molnr, Zsigmond Mricz, Dezs Kosztolnyi scrissero qui le opere prime opere letterarie. Uno dei redattori caop, Ern Osvt gest il periodico alla galleria del caff, come si vede ancora oggi sulla sua targa commemorativa. A partire dagli anni dieci si trasfer qui anche lelite del mondo dello spettacolo e del cinema: part di qui per conquistare il mondo anche Michael Curtis, regista del film leggendario, Casablanca per il quale vinse il premio Oscar, cos come Pongrc Kacs fu colto dallispirazione nel caff per imporre il famoso dramma lirico di Jnos Vitz (Eroe Giovanni). Anche Imre Klmn, compositore di operetta compose nel New York varie sue opere famose. Il New York fu un caff concerto: l dagli inizi si sent la musica zigana e dinverno si esibivano anche delle bande militari. I clienti e gli avventori vennero serviti e vezzeggiati in modo esemplare dai numerosi camerieri, che divennero, per questo, leggendari. Il periodo di gloria del caff ebbe fine con la prima guerra mondiale, quando i fratelli Harsnyi cedettero la gestione. Dopo la guerra il caff lo prese in gestione Vilmos Tarjn, sotto la direzione del quale ebbe inizio unepoca nuova. Istituirono una cucina calda, e nello spazio del mlyvz (aqua profonda) venne predisposto un ristorante ed il Caff e Restaurant New York divenne uno dei ristoranti pi eleganti della citt e centro della vita sociale. In seguito alla crisi economica degli anni trenta e alla II. Guerra Mondiale, la vita sociale si plac in tutta lEuropa, e cos il Caff New York temporaneamente chiuse i battenti e continu a funzionare come un magazzino, come il magazzino pi bello del mondo. Nel 1954 fu riaperto sotto il nome Hungria, sebbene non come caff, ritornando quasi al suo splendore originale.

I nostri giorni
Nel febbraio del 2001 il Gruppo litaliano Boscolo si assunto limpegno di ricostruire ledificio leggendario. I progetti del monumento darte sono stati preparati dagli specialisti del Centro Statale di Restauro e di Ricostruzione Monumenti, sotto la direzione del Hotels.
