Emotions are often thought of as a feminine attribute. Boys are taught to hold back their tears; not to show fear, and squelch any excessive display of feeling, as it supposedly displays weakness,. However, all human beings possess emotions, or feelings. In fact, scientists are discovering that
emotions are major players in "higher" brain functions.

Much of the' recent research oxi emotions centers on the amygdala (a-'rnig-dala) , an almond-shaped structure lodged in the lower part of the brain which scrutinizes information for its emotional weight (an emotional "filter").

If, for example, the information is the sight and sounds of a growling bear, the amygdala sends signals to other brain structures that can generate
emotional reactions such as fear or anxiety.

On the other hand, the cerebral cortex, or the outer part of the brain, generates a more complete picture of what has he&n perceived. It may quickly

override signals of alarm sent by the amygdala. Perhaps the qrowling bear startles you: the amygdala has triggered a feeling of fear, A~split second later you realize the bear can't get you because you're standing in a crowd
gazing at him through the bars at the San Diego Zoo.

If

information has emotional significance, it is more likely to be recorded with clarity in one's memory. Almost everybody who's old enough can remember what they were doing when Kennedy got shot. That memory is etched in your mind forever because of the emotion you felt. (Try to remember the day before the
event . . no way!)

Not only does the amygdala influence memory, but scientists have found that

emotional development in the human brain begins in the amygdala even before
the cerebral cortex is fully formed. The parts of the cortex that can counter an emotional reaction do not operate fully in a human baby until

sometimes between 18 and 36 months--several months after the amygdala becomes active* The delayed maturation of the cortex may have profound consequences. Researchers believe much emotional information is recorded permanently by the
amygdala before it can be overridden by the cortex. This subconscious emotional record could exert a strong subconscious influence and explain some
phobias.

For example, suppose we are bitten by a dog at age one. Later, as adults, we don't remember being bitten, but throughout life, we break into a cold sweat when we ccme too close to a canine creature. What happened is this: when we were bitten at that young age, our amygdala signaled the emotion of fear, but the information about the experience couldn't be stored, because the cortex wasn't fully formed yet. Consequently, we weren't able to reason that not all dogs are vicious--just ones whose tails we are pulling!

which we were unable to look at "logically." As a result, we are not even aware of who we are, why we are the way we are, and all of the influences that caused us to be this way. Foolishly, as so-called mature adults, we

emotional parts of our character, saying "that is the devil," ignoring the

fact that Yahweh purposed our emotions.

He made the amygdala!

(Or did you

make yours?) The amygdala (emotional filter) is activated before our cortex (logically thinking mind) is formed, so we have more emotions or feelings than we can even remember. Then pile on top of that all of our efforts to squelch our emotions--wow, no wonder we' don't know ourselves.
Well, what is the Gospel, anyway? Is it learning about Moses at the burning bush, and bringing the children of Israel up through the Red Sea ., .. . night after night repeating the same correlations? Is it delving into the intricacies of the three-fold pattern and finding out how many new correlations we can come up with--matching this with that and that with this? Or is the true Gospel coming to a profound understanding of the Father operating His purpose within
us. We contend that the latter is true.

You might say, what does all of that have to do with the Gospel?

Looking at the purpose, Immanuel said, "Think not that I am come to destroy the Law and the Prophecy; I came not to destroy but to fulfill-" He came to put an end to the correlations. That's what fulfill means: to bring to an

end, to close out, as in a contract: when you fulfill a contract, it is over, finished. Likewise, we are supposed to be learning that our entire Law and Prophecy (childhood and period of time before we came into class) must be fulfilled, or brought to an end. But we are not supposed to destroy our past. Just as Immanuel didn't come to destroy, we are not to destroy our past, but fulfill it. And the only way to fulfill it is to see it and -~

understand it.
Emotions are a" vehicle by which we can remember our Law and Prophecy, so that
we might fulfill it. They etch experiences into our mind. In essence, we are our emotions. Without them, we would be robots, or lifeless objects. So, in examining ourselves, we have seen that Yahweh set up our emotions as vehicle of learning. Therefore, it would be foolish to try to get rid of
them, for they are tools to see what must be fulfilled in us before we can

In this class, we have been taught to try to control

our emotions, not let

them control us. Once we understand how to do it, it won't be something that we will have to work up on: we will do it automatically. The way to control emotions is to first believe that Yahweh is running the show (easy statement,
hard reality).

For example, suppose we are the type of person who flies off the handle easily. Somebody does something we consider to be stupid, and instead of

accepting the fact that the person is indeed stupid (at times) , we get angry
at that person every time they display their stupidity. Put on the mind of Spock now: what would he do? Remember, he has no emotions. Well, he would do one of two things: avoid dealing with the stupid person, or when he was

forced to deal with him, he would just accept the fact that the person was going to act like an imbecile. Why get hot and bothered by it? Aaah, that's the key. ffluc.. Why, why, why. Evidently-we don't believe that Yahweh is running the show in the other person, causing them to be stupid about

insults us and says that we're an asshole. Our immediate reaction is to lash out, and defend ourselves. But, wait a minute. Our emotions have taken

Therefore, when someone calls us a name, we can agree with them. Yes, I'm that. And there goes the argument. But, don't just say it, know it. Check yourself out; check out your law and prophecy, and find out just how ignorant you've really been all your life. Then maybe you'll be able to keep your emotions in check and enjoy them as something that Yahweh set up for His pleasure.
