The Need
Business with a heart
Most educated rural youth migrate to cities in search of job opportunities since their villages offer little or none. These helpless youth have no choice but to leave their families and the proud village culture behind and flock the cities with the hope of making a decent living. With fragmented families and increasing corporatisation of agriculture, farming as a means of income for the lower income rural population is becoming less appealing. The economic progress the country is experiencing today is only limited to the urban areas and benefiting middle class and above. This progress will not sustain in the long term unless rural India is brought into nation-wide development. To prevent migration, we must provide non-agricultural income and employment opportunities in rural areas to sustain the economy.
The Initiative
A group of successful and like minded professionals, with the intention of doing their little mite to address this dire need, have launched an initiative to set up business processing centres in rural areas. Remote processing of non-critical business transactions such as data entry, simple book keeping, expenses handling, document digitization and archival, etc., requires very basic infrastructure with reliable network connectivity and enthusiastic youth who can be trained. Today, most of the corporations are getting this kind of work done in metros by luring people from outside the cities. These companies can benefit immensely by taking the jobs to the people where they are rather than bringing people to the jobs. When we can successfully break the stigma of offshori8ng among the Western Industry, there is no reason why we cant stretch the same concept to our own rural areas and bring similar cost benefits to the domestic organizations. Hence the initiative is christened as RuralShores.

The Objective
Establish one RuralShores centre in each of the 500 rural districts of the country thereby providing sustainable employment to over 100,000 rural youths by 2020.

Driving Principles
The initiative incorporates the following operating principles: Training is a critical part of the program and the employees are provided minimum 3 months of training in basic English and computer skills. Preference is given to people with disabilities and from low-income families Jobs are offered in accordance with education levels and profile Each centre is run as a professional business for profit to ensure sustainability
The basic human values and ethics are the pillars of the entity
Win-Win Proposition
Though each RuralShores centre would be carried out on commercial principles providing cost arbitrage and quality deliverables to clients, this initiative is intended to bring immense benefits to the society, country and corporates.
Centres of Operation
Currently RuralShores has 12 centres in operation in Karnataka, Gujarat, Andhra Pradesh, Rajasthan, Uttar Pradesh, Madhya Pradesh and Tamil Nadu, employing more than 1000 rural youth. Five more centres in Himachal Pradesh, Punjab and Bihar will become operational by Q III 2012. Each centre has an average 100 seats with a capacity for 180 people in two shifts.
The Business Proposition

The business model is to continue to keep a sharp focus on building skill sets and provid employment to the deserving rural youth and build character while fostering the rural economy. and in the process make it a serious business case for corporations. To achieve its goal, RuralShores employs a robust business model with emphasis on sustainability, scalability and security (information), while delivering quality and cost advantages to clients.
Customer Processes
Today, RuralShores is managing nearly 30 different processes for more than a dozen clients from various industries including Banking, Insurance, Telecom, Micro Finance, Logistics and Healthcare. Most of the processes are rule based transaction processing and some are local language voice support.
People Profile
Most employees have 12th Standard level education. They are provided two types of training: Foundation training which includes Basic English read and write, basic computer skills and soft skills followed by process specific training.
Social Impact
Standard of living of employees and their families has undergone a tremendous uplift since the time they have been given sustainable employment at the centres. In an internal study done recently, it was found that employees have invested in household conveniences, besides providing for higher education for themselves and their siblings.
Skills Academy
This has been set up for training in the rural areas since both undergraduates and graduates do not find an opportunity to develop professional skills. The objective is to train approx.150,000 youth in the next 10-12 years and develop Typing, Basic computing and English comprehension skills.
Quality Management
The target is to decrease errors by improving the performance levels of Data Entry, productivity & accuracy. Some of the measures undertaken include. Implementing lean six sigma methodologies across all processes Reducing Cost of Poor Quality (COPQ) for all processes Driving Six Sigma Quality function deployment for all centres in corporate and operational domain Imparting Six Sigma Yellow Belt training to all Process leads and Centre Managers Implementing Customer Operations Performance Centre (COPC) and ISO audits for the centres
