This list includes opportunities nationwide in several different areas. The list is organized alphabetically and is broken down into 2 subsections: Enrichment Opportunities and Research Opportunities. The list includes programs appropriate for those interested in medicine, dentistry and veterinary medicine. This list has been compiled from many different resources, and therefore its complete accuracy cannot be guaranteed. Please contact me if you discover any misinformation. I would like to keep the list as current and accurate as possible. In addition, please be aware that this list is not comprehensive but just a place for you to begin your search for health-related summer opportunities. You may be aware of other opportunities in your hometown that do not appear on the Summer Opportunities List. I encourage you to continue to investigate other prospects in your area of interest. Description: Summer MCAT Prep Program includes coursework in scientific reading, science problems, organic and bio-chemistry, physics, quantitative analysis, biology, verbal reasoning, reading and writing. Study and test-taking skill development is an essential element of the program. Academic counseling and assistance with AMCAS preparation is provided as well as mock MCAT tests. Books and a stipend are included for eligible students. University of Medicine & Dentistry of NJ/ Robert Wood Johnson Medical School Piscataway, NJ
Description: The Biomedical Careers Program is designed for minority and disadvantaged undergraduate students interested in the health care fields and biomedical research. Participants take part in a variety of science enrichment and health care oriented activities. The program has 3 levels. LEVEL 1 is designed for students who have just begun preprofessional studies and have completed at least one year of college including one semester of introductory biology and one semester of introductory math. It consists of 2 courses: Intro to Microbiology and Intro to Organic Chem., as well as workshops and seminars. LEVEL 2 is designed for students who have completed at least 2 semesters of general biology plus one semester of college math. The curriculum includes: advanced biology, generally either Intro to Genetics or Intro to Biochemistry, Lab in Genetics or Microbial Physiology and either Intro to Organic Chem or MCAT Science review plus workshops and seminars. LEVEL 3 is designed for students who are at or near the point of applying to professional school and have completed nearly all pre-professional science requirements. The curriculum includes: Advanced biology, generally either Intro to Immunology or Intro to Neuroscience, either MCAT Science Review or another advanced biology course plus workshops, research and seminars. This program can be taken for college credit. Eligibility: The program has been designed specifically for those students belonging to racial or ethnic groups currently underrepresented in medicine and other biomedical careers. Special consideration will also be given to students who come from socioeconomically disadvantaged backgrounds regardless of their race or ethnic background. Because the Biomedical Careers Program is supported by NJ state institutions, priority will be given to students enrolled at Rutgers University, EOF-eligible and students who are legal residents of NJ. University of North Carolina School of Medicine Medical Education Development Program Premedical/Predental Summer Session Chapel Hill, NC
Description: The MED program provides a demanding academic core on the level of beginning medical/dental studies in Gross Anatomy, Histology, Physiology, Microbiology/Immunology and Clinical Biochemistry. It also may include a special dental theory and technique course for pre-dental students as well as individualized work in learning, study, reading and test-taking skills. Seminars, workshops, pre-professional counseling and orientation to the medical and dental school environment will also be provided. Eligibility: Criteria for selection are based on a number of factors including 1) showing educational promise and a strong commitment to a health career but lack of past opportunities (educational, social and economic) that may place a student from a nontraditional background at a disadvantage in seeking admission and successfully entering medical or dental school. 2) Must have completed at least 3 years of college coursework including Organic Chemistry. Description: The Institute for Genomic Research is a not-for-profit research institute with interests in structural, functional and comparative analysis of genomes and gene products. The summer fellowship program provides an environment the enables hands-on science training in methods in molecular biology, informatics and DNA sequencing. Each fellow will be assigned a mentor who is a member of the Institutes faculty. The mentor will have responsibility for training the fellow and assigning, supervising and reviewing the fellows work Undergraduate fellows will receive between $600-$710 stipend biweekly. Eligibility: All applicants must be eligible to work in the United States. Students must have completed course work in Biology, Microbiology, Molecular Biology, Biochemistry, Genetics or Computer Science, or have an equivalent background. Moffitt Cancer Center & Research Center at the University of South Florida Tampa, FL
Description: Summer Intern Program is available to high school graduates and college undergraduates who are interested in pursuing careers in biomedical science. Interns are placed with an appropriate mentor according to their research interest. Students receive different experiences based on the goals and research interests of their mentors laboratories. Students are encouraged to attend weekly seminars at the Cancer Center and to interact with other members of the faculty. Students work 40 hours a week and receive a stipend of $2500. Description: The Stanford Summer Research Program in Biomedical Sciences is a residential internship program which provides hands-on laboratory experience for undergraduates who would contribute to diversity in graduate study in the biological and biomedical sciences. This program is designed for students who would like to prepare for and enter PhD programs in these fields. The program combines a rigorous research experience with comprehensive mentoring and advising. Stanford will provide students with summer housing, meals, and travel to and from the summer research program. Additionally, all SSRP participants will receive a $2000 stipend. Eligibility: Eligible candidates are US citizens or permanent residents enrolled at undergraduate institutions why by reason of their culture, class, race, ethnicity, background, work and life experiences, skills and interests, would bring diversity to graduate study in the biological and biomedical sciences. The program especially encourages applications from Black/African Americans, Hispanic Americans, Native Americans, and Pacific Islanders. U. of Connecticut Schools of Medicine & Dental Medicine College Summer Fellowship, Farmington, CT
Description: Fellowship program designed to provide a research enrichment experience and some exposure to clinical medicine or dental medicine. Approximately 30+ hours will be spent on research project and 8-10 hrs on clinical experientials. A $2,500-$3,000 stipend is provided Eligibility: Undergraduate students who are interested in careers in medicine, dentistry or biomedical research should apply. Students who have finished their junior year are given preference. Applicants should have completed some college coursework in biology and chemistry (preferably through organic).
