Studies in Applied Statistics

Dear Postgraduate Statistics Student I am pleased to welcome you to the Swinburne Statistics program in Applied Statistics for Semester 2 / Teaching Period 5, 2012. Please find enclosed some information on the study units, in which you are enrolled. For students enrolled in HMS770, HMS771, HMS772, HMS777, HMS780, HMS786 and HMS791 there will be no weekly lectures. For some of these units voluntary weekend workshops will be held on the Hawthorn Campus on the dates indicated on Pages 6 and 7. Please inform your lecturer via email if you will be attending these workshops. We will cancel these workshops if we do not have at least 5 enrolments. For students enrolled in HMS781, HMS782 and HMS794 there will be weekly classes available on the Hawthorn Campus, one evening a week. If possible we will be obtaining Lectopia recordings for these lectures. However, we do encourage you to attend the lectures in person because it will give you the opportunity to be more involved in class discussions and to have additional hands-on experience with the software. I am the Academic Head for Statistics. I will deal with all general academic matters relating to the program but your first contact about unit matters is the unit lecturer as given on Pages 6 and 7. The Facultys Graduate Office, (details below) looks after all your enrolment and general administration issues related to your course including your personal details, semester address, contact phone number, email etc. The forms can be found from the website http://www.swinburne.edu.au/studentoperations/forms/higher-education.html NB: Any changes must be made on the appropriate forms, just telling a staff member is not sufficient. Please read through the attached pages and keep this important information about your studies and student resources at Swinburne. If you have any further queries please feel free to contact me or your lecturer. We look forward to assisting you with your studies. Yours sincerely

Communications
You need to have good access to the internet both for accessing the web and email. The main form of direct communication with you will be by email. This will normally be done via your Swinburne email, but make sure we have your current private email. If you access your email through a provider other than Swinburne, it is your responsibility to ensure that your Swinburne email is redirected to your private email address. To redirect your Swinburne email, go to
https://www.swin.edu.au/chdets/login.php

Note The login details are given below.

My.Swinburne and Blackboard (iLearn)

My.Swinburne is your personalised home page as a Swinburne student and includes access to your Blackboard site, important information about your units, examination timetable, results, student evaluations and your Swinburne email. This site is accessed from the Current Student website at http://www.swinburne.edu.au/student/. Please check it at least once a week. To login to My.Swinburne your username is your seven digit student number and your password is your birth date in ddmmyy format (eg 21 June 1976 would be 210676). NB: Never respond to messages requesting your login details. Your first contact about academic matters is the unit lecturer as given in the unit outlines. For each of the units in which you are enrolled you should have access to an online Blackboard site. This is the site that you should visit for most resource materials, assignments and quizzes associated with your units. Click on the subject home page to access material for each study unit. To access these sites use the My.Swinburne website. To see your progressive marks for assignments and quizzes go the Blackboard site for the unit and select the Mygrades. tab on the left hand side. There is also a special Organization Blackboard site for the Postgraduate Applied Statistics program where job adverts, seminar notifications and exam information are supplied,

To get help with Blackboard, go to the Blackboard Help page at http://www.swinburne.edu.au/ads/support/ and http://ilearn.swin.edu.au/ to log into the system. For enquiries regarding Blackboard, please contact: Blackboard Helpdesk Mon-Fri 9:00 am to 5:00 pm Blackboard@swin.edu.au Tel: (03) 9214 5295

Announcements and materials

You should regularly check the Blackboard and My.Swinburne websites where announcements and new materials and events will be posted. Please note that it is your responsibility to check your Blackboard sites and your Swinburne email at least once a week, preferably every day.

Unit outlines
Weekly details of your units will be found in the Unit Outlines which are posted on the Blackboard sites for each unit.

Text books and notes

In all units you will be supplied with unit outlines, handouts and other materials during the semester. Information about some of these may be provided with this letter, but in some cases, will be available on the Blackboard website for the unit. Certain units use a prescribed textbook which you need to purchase separately from the Swinburne bookshop. Enquiries Supervisor (Danielle Sleep, Email: dsleep@swin.edu.au, Telephone: (03) 9214 5493)). Also see the bookshop website www.bookshop.swin.edu.au/. If you find any sections in the notes to be unclear, please email the unit lecturer for clarification.

Assessment supervisor/invigilator
The assessment for each unit is set out in the Unit Outline. Any students based within a 100km radius of the Hawthorn Campus are expected to sit their exams at the Hawthorn campus. For all other students it will be necessary for you to arrange for an independent person to supervise your exams. You must complete an invigilator form, which will be available on the Organization Blackboard site for the Postgraduate Applied Statistics program. We require the name, address, position, phone and email details of your invigilator, eg work superior (not immediate family member please) so exam materials can be forwarded in time for you to take the exam. This obviously does not apply to students completing their examinations at the Hawthorn campus. Please note: Students who are unable to sit exams at the Hawthorn Campus will be liable for all invigilation costs. The faculty will not cover these costs. We therefore encourage you to seek out invigilation arrangements that are free of charge. Alternatively, you may wish to speak to our administration office regarding the possibility of completing your studies through Open Universities Australia (OUA).

SPSS Grad Pack V20

For most units, it is essential that you have the IBM SPSS Statistics package to work with. We recommend you use the IBM SPSS Statistics Grad Pack V20 (but SPSS Windows version 16 or higher is sufficient). You can obtain a copy by contacting the Swinburne bookshop, Enquiries Supervisor (Danielle Sleep, Email: dsleep@swin.edu.au, Telephone: (03) 9214 5493). Also see the bookshop website www.bookshop.swin.edu.au/. Please specify whether you want the MAC or PC version. Please note that students wishing to study HMS794 should purchase the Premium IBM SPSS Statistics Grad Pack if possible. Notes and exercises are written assuming you are working with version 16 or higher of SPSS for Windows. If you do have any difficulty please contact us.

The SAS Package

Those doing HMS781 (Further Statistical Computing), HMS782 (Forecasting), HMS786 (Survey Sampling) [and HMS794 (Statistical Tools for Marketing) in semester 2] will need to have access to the SAS Software, version 9.2. Through an arrangement we have with SAS, your lecturer will supply this at no cost. NB: Please note that this package ONLY RUNS on PCs with the following Windows operating systems
Microsoft Windows XP Professional - Service Pack 2 or later Microsoft Windows Vista - Enterprise, Business and Ultimate Editions Microsoft Windows 7- Home Premium, Enterprise, Business and Ultimate Editions

It cannot run on a MAC and it cannot run with

Windows XP Home Edition Vista Home Basic Edition Vista Home Premium Edition

Students enrolled in HMS781, HMS782, HMS786 (and HMS794 in semester 2) will receive an email from Elizabeth Ewing just before the start of semester, asking if you need SAS.

Adobe Acrobat
Some work is provided on the web in a special format called pdf. This can be opened using Adobe Acrobat. If necessary you can obtain a free copy of Adobe Acrobat to open the pdf files from the site http://www.adobe.com/products/acrobat/

WinZip
Sometimes data files will be provided on Blackboard in zipped format. To open you need a copy of WinZip. This can be downloaded from http://www.winzip.com/
