A PAPER ON
Since the industrial revolution, the world has witnessed incalculable technological achievements & also population growth and hence corresponding increase in resources use.
SUSTAINABILITY
'... meeting the needs of people today without destroying the resources that will be needed ... by persons in the future; based on long range planning and the recognition of the finite nature of natural resources...'
GREEN ARCHITECTURE
Green Architecture is a term used to describe economical, energy-saving, environmentallyfriendly, sustainable development.
Global warming
The Four-R's:
Reduce
Recycle
Renewable Rethinking
GREEN MATERIALS
SELECTION CRITERIA:
Resource Efficiency:
1. 2. 3. 4. 5. 6. 7. Recycled Content Natural & renewable Resource efficient manufacturing process Salvaged, refurbished, or remanufactured Reusable or recyclable Durable Locally available
SELECTION CRITERIA:
Indoor Air Quality (IAQ):
1. 2. 3. 4. 5. Low or non-toxic Minimal chemical emissions Moisture resistant Healthfully maintained Systems or equipment
SELECTION CRITERIA:
Energy Efficiency
Water Conservation
Affordability
Impermeable.
Improved workability High strength Long life.
Aerocon blocks:
Made up of cement, fly ash, lime & water.
Light weight. High thermal insulation. Frost & water resistant. Fire resistant. Saves recurring costs of heating and cooling.
Green Paints:
Low- or no-VOC (volatile organic compound) paint . They release no significant pollutants. No odour . Improve overall indoor air quality. Generally cost the same as conventional paint .
Glazing Glass:
Optimizes energy efficiency. Enhance light penetration. Good visual and aesthetic
effects.
Proper selection and placement can reduce the
cost of construction.
Linoleum
Mixture of linseed oil, pine resin, sawdust, cork dust, limestone and jute. Natural alternative to resilient flooring. Extremely durable. Very less flammable. Flexible. Mainly used for flooring.
Cork :
Harvested every 9 years from the same tree. Elastic, anti-static, sound absorbing, insulating and anti-allergenic. Mainly used for flooring.
Bamboo:
When treated becomes extremely hard and durable. Light weight. Substitute for steel reinforcing rods. Cheap and high availability.
Enhance and protect ecosystems and biodiversity. Improve air and water quality. Reduce solid waste. Conserve natural resources.
Reduce operating costs. Enhance asset value & profits. Improve employee productivity and satisfaction Optimize life-cycle economic performance. Reduces future liability. Increase retail sales.
Improve air, thermal & acoustic environments. Enhance occupant comfort and health. Reduce healthcare costs. Improve employee satisfaction and morale Less absenteeism and turnover.
Green techniques:
Lighting:
Study the sun diagram and place the windows properly. Make use of CFLs and LED bulbs for lighting purpose. Make majority use of natural light.
Water Management
Design for dual plumbing Rain water harvesting. Use a water budget approach. Use of sprinklers and Drip Irrigation.
Energy Generation:
Installation of photovoltaic cell. Solar water heaters. Biogas plant. Small wind mills.
CASE STUDY
Materials
Red laterite stone for exterior walls. Jaisalmaier tiles for flooring. Recycled wood used for cupbords, almariahs & doors. Use of Green paints. Fly ash based aerocon blocks used for compound walls.
Natural Lighting
Glass Panels on the roof allow the natural sunlight into the house. No need of artificial lighting during day time. 90% of the building is day lit.
Energy Generation
20% of the buildings energy requirement is catered to by solar photo voltaic cells. Solar water heater systems are installed on top of the house.
Water Efficiency
Rain Water Harvesting
Garden
The house is surrounded by many trees such as palm, mango, coconut, papaya, chiku, etc. Also there are many flowering plants such as rose, chapha, gladiolas, jaswandi, orchids, jasmin, etc. Hence the house gets a fresh look and the people staying in the house feel pleasant.
Conclusion
Vast Applications.
Dominant in developed countries. Role of government & civil engineers.
Even if some materials or practices are costlier, it is the price to pay for safety !!!
