Executive Summary

Besides the protagonist, there were key management competencies associated with other characters as well characters, with darker shades of grey, were not completely black. Around half of the competencies found, were from these other characters thereby making the learning process multidimensional. We first define management competency and its use in the business world today. The movie has 8 distinctly identifiable managerial competencies, most of which can be associated with the protagonist. However, 50 percent of the managerial competencies identified, were also found in other characters in the movie. Other than managerial competencies, there were other learnings in the movie from which a manager or any working professional may draw inspiration to move up the value chain.

Management Concepts in the movie and their implications

Plan A plan is a list of actions arranged in whatever sequence is thought likely to achieve an objective --- John Argenti

Various characters in the movie exhibited this managerial concept. One such character was Chatur Ramalingam. He used to meticulously plan for his exams beforehand so that he could cope with the ever mounting pressure and perform well. In an organizational setup, planning is among the most important management concepts. Some of the advantages of planning are: Lead Reduces uncertainty Gives direction Helps in decision making Helps prepare a plan B Helps identify chinks in the armour, if any

The task of leadership is not to put greatness into people, but to elicit it, for the greatness is there already --- John Buchan The movie showcased that the dean, Viru Sahastrabuddhe had lead the college successfully. He, at one point says that he took the college from No 28 to No. 1 position. Similarly, leadership is very important for an organization to grow, succeed and touch new heights. Communicate Effectively The art of communication is the language of leadership." --- James Humes The movie had examples of both, good and bad communication. While bad communication landed Chatur in trouble, good, clear and crisp communication helped Raju get a job, helped Farhan to convince his parents about his dream and helped the trio deliver a baby. In an

organization, people spend around 75% of their time in interpersonal situations. Mentioned below are some of the advantages of good communication in an organizational setup: Clear communication helps achieve the desired goals in less time as no extra time is wasted in trying to understand the problem Reduction in interpersonal conflicts It helps individuals understand the mission and vision of an organization better

Motivate
Ability is what you're capable of doing. Motivation determines what you do --- Raymond Chandler

Rancho, through his effective communication, inspired and motivated his friends to follow their dreams. Motivation, similarly, in an organization can lead to decrease in employee turnover, happy employees and successful realization of goals.

Learnings

Seek excellence and success will follow: If you do what you are passionate about, without worrying about the outcome, you will not only achieve excellence but also success, as is aptly proved by the character of Rancho in the movie.

Learning never stops: There is no age bar to learning. You can learn from the most unexpected of people in the most unexpected situations. This point is very well proved when we see the strict and stubborn dean turn soft at the end of the movie. The dean learnt that there is more to life than just exams and competition. In fact, the same point was proven by a worker named milimeter, who started studying at a very late age.

Team work: The biggest of obstacles can be mounted if people work in teams. No one individual is perfect and thus by working in teams we can capitalize on the strengths of the individuals to achieve the task at hand. The movie gives a very good example of this when Rancho and Farhaan team up with Pia to save the life of Rajus father.

Make best use of the resources: As a manager you always have to make the best possible decisions given the resources at hand. You will not always have the ideal resources but it is your managerial competency that will make best use of these resources. In a scene in the movie, Rancho helps in the delivery of a baby by using non medical items such as a vacuum cleaner.

Recommendations:

The movie advocates and propagates a myriad of experiences and learnings that almost everyone can take something back. And, even if one imbibes just a part of this something, it has the potential to do wonders. Some recommendations for both a corporate executive and a commoner are mentioned below: One should focus on building long term relationships and this definitely helps one being in good stead in the long run. Competition is a good thing but working under its pressure definitely lowers ones performance. One should work with a pragmatic and composed approach and the outcomes are supposed to improve invariably. One must be passionate about what one does. This ultimately leads one to reach the epitome of excellence. As an added benefit, success does follow. Being content is the key to exploring life to its full potential. One should try to be content even while facing the toughest of the situations. One should work on keeping oneself and ones peers motivated. Work completed with an added ingredient of motivation speaks for itself. One should be innovative and creative. One should communicate effectively so that the right message gets conveyed to the intended recipient in the right way. One should aspire to be a leader and thus lead by example. One should have a foundation built on strong ethics. One should develop risk taking capabilities and be willing to venture into unexplored avenues. One should constantly aspire to learn and improvise.
