A Brussels family in London

Hv sos vtt born in London,
but now, at eight and 10, theyre
entirely Belgian: they get nervous in
crowds and stand dreamily in front of the
Tube doors, blocking irate commuters.
Would a proper tourist trip help them
rediscover their inner Londoner?
London with children can seem
overwhelming: there are so many
monuments and museums clamouring
for your custom, its easy to get
frazzled and over-stimulated. We
made sure we leh time to potter and
people-watch; we also enlisted my
nine-year-old niece, Millie a proper
Londoner to give us some pointers.
The South Kensington museums
were an obvious starting point. Millie
loves the V&As frocks (vam.ac.uk) but
we stuck with an early-morning dash
to the interactive Launchpad gallery at
the Science Museum, which allows you
to investigate all manner of scientic
phenomena in fun ways: we built
bridges, popped bubbles and admired
a bewitching display of dry ice.
Our other educational destination,
the British Museums Egyptian
Galleries, was a surprise hit. The boys
gory imaginations were captivated by
the mummies, not only human, but
also cat, crocodile and even a stag
beetle (britishmuseum.org).
Aher all that culture, the seven
acres of Coram Fields playground in
Bloomsbury were perfect for letting o
steam there are slides, swings and
sand, but also sheep, chickens and a
huge paddling pool in summer. We
wandered along the South Bank, too,
on Millies recommendation. The
waterfront from Westminster to the
Millennium Bridge has become one
of the citys most brilliant free
adventures, with street performers,
art installations and activities.

de vrais petits Belges : incommods
par la foule, ils restent rveurs
devant les portes du mtro, nervant
les travailleurs dont ils bloquent le
passage. Un circuit touristique les
aiderait-il rveiller le Londonien qui
dort en eux ?
Londres avec des enfants peut
sembler insurmontable : monuments
et muses y abondent, plus allchants
les uns que les autres. On risque den
ressortir reint, les sens saturs.
Mais, nimporte quel ge, visiter
une ville nest pas que culture. Nous
avons veill mler des moments de
farniente et de contemplation aux
attractions incontournables et avons
emmen ma nice Millie, 9 ans, pour
ses tuyaux de Londonienne pur jus.
Point de dpart vident, les muses
de South Kensington. Malgr la
passion de Millie pour les robes du
V&A (vam.ac.uk), nous nous sommes
limits une rapide visite matinale de
la galerie interactive du Launchpad,
au Science Museum, o nous avons
construit des ponts, perc des bulles et
admir, fascins, du CO2 solide.
Autre destination ducative, les
galeries gyptiennes du British
Museum (britishmuseum.org).
Je craignais que les garons ne
sennuient, mais les momies
dhumains, chats, crocodiles et
mme scarabes ont su captiver leur
imagination gore souhait.
La saturation culturelle guettant, les
2,8 ha de Coram Fields, Bloomsbury,
sont arrivs point nomm pour
se dfouler sur les toboggans,
balanoires et bacs sable ou proter
des moutons, des poulets et de la
gigantesque pataugeoire ouverte en
t. Sur les conseils de Millie, nous

(artbox.co.uk) et ses babioles japonaises
puis essayage de T-shirts chez David
& Goliath (davidandgoliathco.com)
lambiance cartoon.
Les enfants sont incroyablement
gloutons et les casse-crote rapides et
abordables sont un des points forts de
Londres. Ultrasophistiqu, le comptoir
tapis roulant du Yo! Sushi de Saint
Pancras a fascin mes petits Belges de
ls (yosushi.com). Nous avons aussi
djeun dcontract au Girae (girae.
net) de Soho, caf world food qui sait
plaire aux enfants. Burgers, ballons
et smoothies sont apprciables, mais
pas autant que le personnel, toujours
irrprochable de bonne humeur,
gentil et stoque mme face aux plus
exigeants des petits.
Un hbergement central et familial
a facilit notre sjour. Les garons nen
revenaient pas de lventail de jeux
vido et de grignotages gracieusement
mis a leur disposition dans notre vaste
appartement familial LAthenaeum,
avec trottinettes, jeux de socit,
yo-yo et mme graines pour pigeons
(athenaeumhotel.com). Une chasse au
trsor a mme t organise un matin
au Green Park voisin par Sharky et
George, les deux animateurs de lhtel.
Le meilleur moment du sjour , ont
immdiatement dcrt les garons.
De tels moments, il y en a eu
beaucoup et nous avons juste e eur
la surface. Nous reviendrons et la
prochaine fois, sans bloquer de portes.

Shopping was a priority, so we
headed to Covent Garden, where
colourful Cybercandy (cybercandy.
co.uk) sells weird and wonderful
sweets from around the world. We
settled on a bacon lollipop and a giant
gumball, then browsed Japanese
trinkets in Artbox (artbox.co.uk) and
tried on cartoony T-shirts in David &
Goliath (davidandgoliathco.com).
Children need an unfathomable
quantity of food, and good quick snacks
are one of the things London does best.
Yo! Sushis conveyor belt at St Pancras
was the last word in sophistication for
my Belgian boys (yosushi.com). We
also had a relaxed lunch in the Soho
branch of Girae (girae.net), the
world food cafe that raises child-
friendliness to an art form. Better even
than the burgers, balloons and smoothies
are the sta: theyre unfailingly
good-humoured, kind and unfazed by
even the most demanding infants.
Staying somewhere central and
family-oriented made the whole trip far
easier. The boys were stunned by the
Athenaeums array of video games and
complimentary snacks laid on in our
huge family apartment, along with
scooters, board games, yo-yos and
even birdseed for the pigeons
(athenaeumhotel.com). The hotels
entertainers, Sharky and George, even
organised a treasure hunt in nearby
Green Park one morning, which the
boys instantly declared the best bit.
Actually, there were lots of best bits
and we barely scratched the surface.
Well be back: and next time well know
to stand clear of the closing doors.
