Review of Australian Standards. To keep abreast of progress in industry, Australian Standards are subject
to periodic review and are kept up to date by the issue of amendments or new editions as necessary. It is
important therefore that Standards users ensure that they are in possession of the latest edition, and any
amendments thereto.
Full details of all Australian Standards and related publications will be found in the Standards Australia
Catalogue of Publications; this information is supplemented each month by the magazine ‘The Australian
Standard’, which subscribing members receive, and which gives details of new publications, new editions
and amendments, and of withdrawn Standards.
Suggestions for improvements to Australian Standards, addressed to the head office of Standards Australia,
are welcomed. Notification of any inaccuracy or ambiguity found in an Australian Standard should be made
without delay in order that the matter may be investigated and appropriate action taken.

This Standard was issued in draft form for comment as DR 97360.

PREFACE

This Standard was prepared by the Standards Australia Committee CH/27, Reference
Gases to supersede AS 2719 — 1984, Traceable reference gases — For analysis of emission
gases of internal combustion engines and motor vehicles — Preparation, analysis and
certification.
This Standard is part of a series as follows:
AS
3536 Reference gases
3536.1 Part 1: Preparation and certification of gravimetric standards
3536.2 Part 2: Preparation, analysis and certification of traceable reference gas mixtures
Within Australia, measurements made for any legal purpose including trade and
government regulation must be traceable to the Australian primary standards of

measurement. When measurements are made for legal purposes, the appropriate
measurement units are prescribed as legal units of measurement and demonstration may be
required in courts of law of the traceability linkages between a measurement tendered as
evidence and Australia’s national measurement standards. There are specific legal
requirements for reference materials used to calibrate measuring instruments used to make
measurements for legal purposes. The National Measurement Act 1960 defines a certified
reference material as one that has been certified under the relevant provisions of the
National Measurement Regulations. As required by Section 10 of the Act such certified
reference materials have one or more of their property values traceable to Australia’s
primary standards of measurement.
The objectives of this Standard are as follows:
(a) Augments the range of available concentrations of reference materials by defining
and specifying additional gases traceable to International Standards. These are
defined as Reference Gas Mixture (RGM).
(b) Describes a protocol for the preparation, analysis and certification of RGM.
It is hoped that this Standard will improve the availability of such reference gases, reduce
their cost and reduce the preparatory work required to calibrate analytical instrumentation
in this field of application.
The term ‘informative’ has been used in this Standard to define the application of the
appendix to which it applies. An ‘informative’ appendix is only for information and
guidance.

Part 2: Preparation, analysis and certification

of traceable reference gas mixtures

1 SCOPE This Standard sets out requirements for the preparation, analysis and
certification procedures of traceable reference gas mixtures. This Standard applies to the
preparation, analysis and certification of a reference gas mixture (RGM) whose range of

concentrations is dependent on the commercially available certified reference gas mixture

(CRGM,) and primary gravimetric standards (PGS); for this Standard, RGMs are limited
to, from 50% of the lowest concentration CRGM or PGS available, up to 200% of the
highest concentration of CRGM, or PGS available.
NOTE: While this Standard applies to the preparation of any RGM, a typical end use is
automotive emissions, an example of which is found in Appendix A.

1777 Seamless aluminium cylinders for compressed gases (0.10 to 130 litres)
2030 The approval, filling, inspection, testing and maintenance of cylinders for the
storage and transport of compressed gases (known as the SAA Gas Cylinders
Code)
2030.1 Part 1: Cylinders for compressed gases other than acetylene
