Ferroalloys—Sampling
AS 3586.2—1997
This Australian Standard was prepared by Committee MN/6, Ferroalloys. It was
approved on behalf of the Council of Standards Australia on 16 December 1996 and
published on 5 February 1997.
Review of Australian Standards. To keep abreast of progress in industry, Australi an Standards are subject
to periodic review and are kept up to date by the issue of amendments or new editions as necessary. It is
important therefore that Standards users ensure that they are in possession of the latest edition, and any
amendments thereto.
Full details of all Australian Standards and related publications wil l be found in the Standards Australia
Catalogue of Publications; this informati on is supplemented each month by the magazine ‘The Australian
Standard’, which subscribing members receive, and which gives details of new publications, new editi ons
and amendments, and of wit hdrawn Standards.
Suggestions for improvements to Australian Standards, addressed to the head office of Standards Australia,
are welcomed. Notification of any inaccuracy or ambiguity found in an Australi an Standard should be made
without delay in order that the matter may be investigated and appropriate acti on taken.

Australian Standard
Ferroalloys—Sampling
1 SCOPE This Standard sets out the methods of sampling ferroalloys in molten form for
both routine and special purposes to provide samples for preparation for chemical analysis.
As such, the Standard deals only with the collection of molten increments, subsamples and
gross samples. Where subsamples and gross samples are to be constituted, this may be done
only by direct combination of solidified increments. Any reduction and division of the
solidified sample is considered to be sample preparation, which is the subject of another

Standard.
3 DEFINITIONS For the purpose of this Standard, the definitions below apply.
3.1 Gross sample —a quantity of ferroalloy consisting of all the increments taken from a
consignment; also, the composite of all the increments or the subsamples having been
individually crushed or divided as necessary.
3.2 Increment —a quantity of ferroalloy obtained by a sampling device at one time from
a packed unit; also, a quantity taken by the increment division method.
3.3 Lot —a quantity of alloy delivered at one time; it may comprise one or more sampling
units.
3.4 Manual sampling —the operation of sampling whereby the increments forming
subsamples and gross samples are taken using a hand-held implement.
3.5 Mass-basis sampling — the taking of increments at or within uniform mass intervals
throughout the lot or sampling unit.
3.6 Quality variation (σw ) — a measure of the heterogeneity of a lot. It is the standard
deviation of the quality characteristics of the increments taken from a lot. It is determined
experimentally for each alloy.
3.7 Sampling unit — the discrete units (trains, sections of belt, daily production) that
comprise the lot.
3.8 Subsample — a quantity of ferroalloy, consisting of a number of increments taken from
a part of the lot and combined; also, a composite of a number of increments each having been
individually crushed or divided as necessary.
3.9 Systematic sampling — the taking of increments whereby the alloy being sampled is
divided into strata, one increment being taken at the same location within each stratum.
3.10 Time-basis sampling —the taking of increments at or within uniform time intervals
throughout the lot or sampling unit.
