Review of Australian Standards. To keep abreast of progress in industry, Australian Standards are subject
to periodic review and are kept up to date by the issue of amendments or new edit ions as necessary. It is
important therefore that Standards users ensure that they are in possession of the latest edit ion, and any
amendments thereto.
Full details of all Australi an Standards and related publications will be found in the Standards Australia
Catalogue of Publi cati ons; this informati on is supplemented each month by the magazine ‘The Australi an
Standard’, which subscribing members receive, and which gives detail s of new publications, new edit ions
and amendments, and of withdrawn Standards.
Suggesti ons for improvements to Australi an Standards, addressed to the head offi ce of Standards Australia,
are welcomed. Noti fi cati on of any inaccuracy or ambiguity found in an Australian Standard should be made
without delay in order that the matter may be investigated and appropriate action taken.

PREFACE

This Standard was prepared by the Standards Australia Committee on Rolling Bearings. The method it
describes for calculating life and reliability of systems of rolling bearings is built upon those described in
AS 2729, Rolling bearings — Dynamic load ratings and rating life — Calculation methods, for calculating
life and reliability of individual rolling bearings.

STANDARDS AUSTRALIA

Australian Standard
Rolling bearings — System life and reliability

1 SCOPE This Standard provides a method for calculating the rating life of a system of rolling
bearings. It applies to those systems in which the failure of any one component produces failure of the
whole system.
NOTES:
1 The rating lives of component beari ngs, requir ed for the methods in this Standard, would normall y be esti mated using the
methods in AS 2729. The assumptions made in AS 2729 would then also apply here.
2 To maintain consistency wit h AS 2729 the methods in this Standard are based on beari ng revolutions, i.e. L10 lives. In some
cases li ves based on hours of operation, i.e. B10 li ves, might be preferr ed and Clause 9 of this Standard shows how this can be
accommodated, when required.
3 Guidance on application of the analysis, and a sample calculati on are given in Appendix A.

3 DEFINITIONS For the purpose of this Standard, the following definitions apply:
3.1 System of bearings — a set of bearings included in, or otherwise related to, a specified item of
equipment or a specified installation.
3.2 Nominated bearing — the nominated bearing for a system of bearings is the bearing chosen as
reference when specifying the system life.
3.3 Life for an individual rolling bearing — the number of revolutions (or number of hours of operation)
which one of the bearing rings (or washers) completes in relation to the other ring (or washer) before it
is considered to have failed.
3.4 Life for a system of rolling bearings — either—
(a) the number of revolutions which one of the bearing rings (or washers) of the nominated bearing
completes in relation to the other ring (or washer) before the system is considered to have failed; or
(b) the number of hours of operation of the system before the system is considered to have failed.
3.5 Reliability of an individual rolling bearing — the probability that the bearing will attain or exceed
a specified life.
3.6 Reliability of a system of bearings — the probability that the system will attain or exceed a specified
life.
3.7 Reliability curve — the curve, presented on a graph, of reliability against specified life.
3.8 Basic rating life of an individual bearing — the life of an individual bearing associated with
90 percent reliability.
3.9 Basic rating life of a system of rolling bearings — the life of a system of rolling bearings associated
with 90 percent reliability.

4 NOTATION
BE — Life of a system of rolling bearing (in hours)
B10 — Basic rating life (in hours)
Bi10 — Basic rating life of an individual bearing (in hours)
Ki — Ratio, assumed constant, of individual bearing speed to nominated bearing speed
for any individual bearing in a system
Li — Life of an individual rolling bearing (in revolutions)
LE — Life of a system of rolling bearings (in revolutions)
L10 — Basic rating life (in revolutions)
Li10 — Basic rating life of an individual rolling bearing (in revolutions)
LE10 — Basic rating life of a system of rolling bearings (in revolutions)
n — Number of rolling bearings in a system
n — Number of identical rolling bearings in a system
Ri — Reliability of an individual rolling bearing
RE — Reliability of a system of rolling bearings
