WRITE UP: Countries that are core countries have a significant presence in the world market, but countries that do not have much of significance in the world market are considered periphery countries, while semi-periphery countries are powerful but still depend on core countries. I noticed that in a periphery country like Trinidad & Tobago, most citizens go into the service industry with almost 63% of all jobs being related to services, followed by

Janiene Smith Sociology 20% of the occupations going to construction and utilities. This fact surprised me because it explains why Trinidad & Tobago is a peripheral country, most of the occupations relate to the direct benefit of the country itself, with no consideration to the global market. In a core country like Germany most occupations go to services, but 20% go towards industry, which explains why Germany is a core country (because of their presence in the world market). I noticed that in a peripheral country like Trinidad the population was only 1.2 Million while in a semi-peripheral country like South Korea the population is 48 Million, Germanys population is 81 Million. I would like to believe that the more populated and educated a country is, the more likely that they can compete on a global scale.

I was not surprised to find that most of my clothing items were made in China. China is considered a semi-peripheral country, but with a high population and education standards Im surprised that they are not considered a world power or a core country. I would think that the unequal wealth distribution is holding China back from their full potential and therefore causing social problems.

Because my major is Business, we discuss things in my classes and I understand why many of the things we own are made in third world countries. In class we discuss things such as outsourcing and sweatshops. American businesses prefer to send jobs oversee to countries where the labor is significantly cheaper. Although many businesses in America are fighting to get rid of the illegal use of sweatshops many of their franchises are still working under their own set of rules separate from the mother company to gain profit. While I was doing this report I realized that many countries in the world benefit if they would focus on the

Janiene Smith Sociology well being, and wealth of the citizens in their country rather than global interdependence and maximizing their profits.
