CAMP MONTARA

: Camp Montara. The site was also known as Point Montara Radar Station J80, San Mateo County, CA.

IQCATIOW The site is on the northern California coast at Half Moon Bay in San Mateo
County approximately 15 miles south-southwest of San Francisco and approximately 37 miles northwest of San Jose, California (Figure 1 and 2).
: On 26 January 1943, the War Department acquired 135.00 leased acres from McNee Company (a ranch located at the site property) and 22.60 leased acres from Hibernia Savings and Loan Society (HSLS). Total acreage acquired was 157.60. 2,052.84 leased acres were scheduled to be leased from HSLS, however, that lease was cancelled. The site was primarily used as a radar site by the Army Air Force. Improvements to the site were constructed between 1943 and 1947, they included construction of two bunkers, concrete foundations for a radar tower, and presumeably an electric generator and a fuel oil underground storage tank. Both leases were terminated in November 1947. Army Corps of Engineers real estate records do not indicate if restoration was required.

The site is currently owned by the State of California Department of Parks and Recreation and by several private property owners. The majority of the site is currently used as a public park.

m A site visit was conducted on 05-06 February 1991 by Mr. Roger Norris and

Mr. Jenn-Yih Peng, the Earth Technology Corporation. The site visit team met with Mr. Chet Bardo, State Park Ranger. Mr. Norris presented a brief discussion of the DEW-FUDS program. Mr. Bardo was identified as the most knowledgeable person regarding the former Camp Montara site area. Mr. Bardo then led the site visit team on a tour of the area. Mr. Bardo identified two DOD-build bunkers and concrete remnants of a radar tower foundation. The DOD-built structures were abandoned by the m i l i t a r y and not beneficially used since DOD terminated occupancy of the site in 1947. The site visit t e a m found no evidence of a former electric generator or underground storage tank.
: BD/DR NOFA. The remaining DOD-built structures are not a structural, climbing or engulfment hazard. : None identified.

Entrance to the former DOD Camp Montara site from U. S. Highway 1. Presently, it is the main entrance t o the Green Valley and state park areas. View east. Abandoned bunker number 1, with dimensions of 15' wide x 30' long x 8' high. There were three electrical pipelines connected to this bunker above it. View south. Concrete relics of former foundation for unknown structures. View west. Tower concrete feet foundation of former radar tracking station. View west-southwest. Abandoned bunker number 2 with dimensions of 20' wide x 40' long x 8' high. This bunker may have been the commanding center during the WWII. View south.

Site Description:
