Olympic Games The Olympic Games (French: les Jeux olympiques, JO[1], Greek: ) is a majo eaturin summer and

nd winter sports, in which thousands of athletes participate in a variety of competitions. The Olympic Games are considered to be the world's f oremost sports competition and more than 200 nations participate.[2] The Games a re currently held biennially, with Summer and Winter Olympic Games alternatin , meanin they each occur every four years. The ancient Olympic Games were held in Olympia, Greece, from the 8th century BC to the 4th century D. Baron Pierre de Coubertin founded the International Olympic Committee (IOC) in 1894. The IOC ha s since become the overnin body of the Olympic Movement, whose structure and a ctions are defined by the Olympic Charter. The evolution of the Olympic Movement durin the 20th and 21st centuries has res ulted in several chan es to the Olympic Games. Some of these adjustments include the creation of the Winter Games for ice and winter sports, the Paralympic Game s for athletes with a physical disability, and the Youth Olympic Games for teena e athletes. Olympic sports are sports contested in the Summer and Winter Olympic Games. The 2012 Summer Olympics will include 26 sports, with two additional sports due to b e added to the 2016 Summer Olympics. The 2014 Winter Olympics will include 7 spo rts. Symbols The Olympic Movement uses symbols to represent the ideals embodied in the Olympi c Charter. The Olympic symbol, better known as the Olympic rin s, consists of fi ve intertwined rin s and represents the unity of the five inhabited continents ( frica, merica, sia, ustralia, Europe). The colored version of the rin sblue, yellow, black, reen, and redover a white field forms the Olympic fla . These colors were chosen because every nation had at least one of them on its national fla . The fla was adopted in 1914 but flown for the first time only at the 1920 Summer Ol ympics in ntwerp, Bel ium. It has since been hoisted durin each celebration of the Games.
