How to interpret finite element results

Background The major objective of this exercise is to get a deeper understanding for how good is the solution both with respect to number of elements and also with respect to element type. Why is this element type that bad in this case and why are these elements better and why is this set of boundary conditions a better approximation and so on ... ? In all cases we will compare the numerical results with an analytical solution. In your report you are supposed to explain the results with your

own words and point out the correct reasons for why behaviour of the result is
what it is both with respect to advantages and disadvantages of a certain mesh containing a certain element type.

Exercise 4: Continuum beam tip loaded The problem you are supposed to study is described in 4.1 Problem Specification in the NAFEMs Workbook of Examples. Before you start doing any finite element calculations it is strongly recommended to read the text under the subheading 4.3 Discussion where the problem for analysis is described and the analytical solution is given. A proposed sequence of analysis is described in 4.2 Analysis Specification. Your task is to solve and discuss the results of the subtask A4.1 A4.7 and after that also F4.1 and F4.2. The written report shall contain results and discussions verifying that you have understood the different behaviour of your different finite element meshes and results of every subtask above! The report must also contain three different graphs showing the vertical displacement, the bending stress and the shear stress along the beam. In all of these three graphs the analytical solution must also be present. Hint: It is possible to export one curve from one analysis and include all curves of the same kind into the same graph.

Exercise 5: Infinite thick pipe This task has exactly the same structure as above. In this case you shall study A5.1, A5.2, A5.4, F5.1 and F5.2. The report shall contain a thorough discussion for each of these five items as in the previous subtask. The report shall contain three different graphs comparing the numerical results and the analytical solution with respect to the radial stress, the tangential stress and the radial displacement.

Exercise 9: Flat bar with edge notches In this last subtask, you are asked to study the NAFEM tasks A9.1 and A9.2 and discuss the results. The report shall contain a comparison with the handbook solution.
