PREFACE
This Standard was prepared by the Joint Standards Australia/Standards New Zealand Committee on Information
Systems—Interconnection. It is identical with, and has been reproduced from, ISO/IEC 8880-1:1990, Information
technology—Telecommunications and information exchange between systems—Protocol combinations to provide
and support the OSI Network Service, Part 1: General principles.
The Standard is one of a series of Open Systems Interconnection (OSI) Standards which are currently under
development. Since OSI Standards are developmental, there may be some minor difficulties encountered in their
implementation. For this reason, Standards Australia will be providing, through the OSI Help Desk, a service to
coordinate and disseminate information concerning difficulties which are identified in using this Standard.
Under arrangements made between Standards Australia/Standards New Zealand and the international Standards
bodies, ISO and IEC, as well as certain other Standards organizations, users of this Joint Standard are advised

Service defined in ISO 8348 and its Addendum 1. The ISO 7498:1984, Information processing systems —
field of application of this part of ISO /IEC 8880 is that Open Systems Interconnection — Basic reference
of the environments defined in the other parts of model.
ISO/IEC 8880. The field of application may be extended
by the incorporation of a new environment as specified ISO 7498/Add.1:1987, Information processing
herein. This part of ISO/IEC 8880 systems — Open Systems Interconnection — Basic
reference model — Addendum 1: Connectionless-mode
a) provides a general introduction; transmission.
b) refers to those International Standards which ISO 8648:1988, Information processing systems —
define the architectural principles governing the Open Systems Interconnection — Internal organization
provision of the Network Service; of the Network layer.
c) defines terms which may be used in specifying the ISO/IEC 8880-2:1990, Information technology —
environments in which protocol combinations Telecommunications and information exchange
operate; between systems — Protocol combinations to provide
and support the OSI Network Service — Part 2:
d) specifies principles and a framework for describing Provision and support of the connection-mode Network

The following standards contain provisions which,
