For madela day

n July 18, the world celebrated International Mandela Day with the 67 minutes for Mandela campaign. As part of Upstarts commitment to a literate society where children themselves are agents for change in addressing the illiteracy crisis; we decided to dedicate our 67 minutes of Mandela Day to promoting the culture of reading among learners. Upstarters shared their love of

books with children in their schools and communities by reading and talking about the importance of joining a library. Pictured above are Upstarters from Ntaba Maria Primary School with learners from Fikizolo Primary School. Upstart hopes to continue the relationship between these two schools. elcome to the third edition of Upstart. We have had an exciting few months with a number of changes taking place in the Upstart Youth Development Project. Upstart is now completely independent and has been registered as a Non-Profit Organisation. We have a new management team who help advise the staff on how to grow the project and how to best serve our members. As a result we have moved offices and are no longer part of the David Rabkin Project for Experiential Journalism. Upstart would like to thank the board and management of the David Rabkin Project for the support and advice over the years. Our new office is at No. 5 Prince Alfred Street. Upstart would like to welcome two new members to the Upstart family: Julie Nxadi and Scott Chapman who join us for the next few months as interns. Over the June holidays we ran a computer literacy programme for over 60 learners at CM Vellem and Khutliso Daniels. Members were equipped with skills in Microsoft Word, PowerPoint and the Internet. We would like to thank Luvuyo Leon Kiti who dedicated his time and expertise in training our members. Thank you to Mrs Mene and Mr Mcuba for allowing us to use the computer labs at their schools. Hey there Upstart readers, my name is Sibulele Moyakhe. I was born in Knysna but I was raised in Grahamstown. I live with my sisters, grandmother, my four cousins and my big brother. I am 15 years old and I am doing Grade 9. This is my first year in Upstart and I am the clubs captain at my school. During my spare time I read books that I borrow from Duna Library. My favourite subjects are Social Science, Economics and Management Sciences, Life Orientation and Biology. Being an Upstart member I have so much fun and I wish I had joined the project earlier. I like encouraging other learners to join Upstart because it is not a bad decision at all to choose to be an Upstart member.

Letters
Dear Upstart This letter is about a dirty and unhealthy environment within our community. People are blaming the municipality as if they are not responsible for their environment. Between Tantyi and Joza Locations there is a big veld with an exposed drain which affects the people passing by. The air around that area is polluted, affecting the people as well as the animals and plants there. The children that play in that area are getting sicker and sicker. There are also the graves of our family members in that area. Dear Upstart members I write this letter to urge all Upstart members to please behave properly in public, especially when we are wearing Upstart t-shirts. When an Upstart member behaves inappropriately in public it reflects negatively on the whole project. Im sure that we dont want to give Upstart a bad image. If we want to continue to receive good opportunities that we are getting right now then good behaviour is key. Many of us have been helped by Upstart and we should show our gratitude by behaving well. Zikhona Faku, Grade 10, Nombulelo High School I just want to say hello to my family and friends out there and that they should enjoy the year of 2012. Lastly, I want to say good luck to all the matrics. May God be with you all. Shakira Norris, Grade 10, Horskool PJ Olivier I would like to send a shout out to my friends: Lize, Carleen, Shakira, Karin and Cara. To all Grade 10 A learners, lastly good luck to the matrics. Hope you have the best year ever. Layla Peters, Grade 10, Horskool PJ Olivier My shout out goes out to VG girls Yasmine, Le-Larche, Caryn, Jasmine, Meagan, Shaneez and Tifanny. Love you gals to bits. We think that the municipality must play a role in this environment but also the people of that community. The most painful thing is when the sun comes out early in the morning because the smell from the drain affects us badly as it comes into the houses. The ward councillors of the two areas need to play a part in cleaning this mess up. Nobathembu Nxawe, Sibusiso Fihlani, Sibulele Moyake, Grade 9, Archie Mbolekwa Higher Primary School

Interview by Lindokuhle Tyota and Athenkosi Dyosini Grade 8 Khutliso Daniels High School

ool of Sch month the

education

Tuesday 31 July 2012 upstartyouth.com

n this edition we focus our attention on two schools in Grahamstown, looking at their challenges and their successes over the last few months. Khutliso Daniels is our school of the month, mainly because the school has drastically improved and is fast becoming a centre for academic excellence. The school has gathered resources such as the computer lab with the e-learning program, mobile computer unit sponsored by Dimension Data and Principal Radio Mcuba introduced extra Maths lessons at the school to try and meet the challenges faced by the learners. Upstarters at the school interviewed the principal about these activities: What is your aim in having morning lessons for Grade 12 Mathematics? Is the e-learning program assisting you in your teaching of Mathematics? The purpose of these Maths extra lessons is to add more contact time with the learners, explaining Maths for better and improved understanding of concepts. Learners get enough time for more hands-on, minds-on, i.e. to have ample of time to express themselves. Extra time gives more opportunity of understanding individuals and the teacher knows them on a one-to-one kind of teaching strategy. Additional time alleviates pressure of syllabus coverage from both the educator and learners themselves. It gives me much more time to revise, especially the scaffolding topics, as far back Grade 10. To allow curriculum and syllabus coverage much earlier than the required time frame so that by the time they are writing Trial / September Examination, they are in a comfortable position and have enough time for revision, in preparation for the final examination. Which schools attend your Mathematics morning extra lessons? Besides my school which is attending my Mathematics extra lessons, I have learners from Nombulelo Senior Secondary, TEM Mrwetyana Secondary and from Mary Waters High school. When did you start your Mathematics morning classes? I started these Maths extra lessons as early as the beginning of February months. This is what I normally do every year to improve Maths results. Which Grades are attending your morning mathematics lesson/classes? Mainly Grade 12. Sometimes I would include Grade 11s for topics which they also do. Why did you decide to embark on these Extra Mathematics lessons? What motivated or inspired you to conduct these Extra Mathematics morning lessons? To instill a sense of love and in Mathematics and hence improved Maths results. I have been inspired by the fact that matric Mathematics results have generally been underperformed provincially and nationally. So I wanted to make a difference and thereby participate in turning the situation around.

What would you say to anyone when selling this program of Extra Mathematics Lessons? Conducting Maths extra lessons helps benefit learners and they improve their understanding and make them develop a positive self esteem and hence positive attitude towards Mathematics. It also proves wrong the myth that says Mathematics is difficult and is for certain selected individuals. What would your comment be to the community and parents about the nutrition program which has been going on in your school since last year? Are there any positives or challenges in this program? The comment I would have regarding the nutrition program which we initiated and started two years ago would be that it has proved useful at least to boost learners; energy levels in order for them to improve their concentration levels, improved attention span, improved performance and be able to produce at the end. We cant teach learners on empty stomachs and we therefore cannot pretend as if we are not aware of that. Is Khutliso Daniels the only high school which has the nutrition program? Why did you start the nutrition program here at Khutliso Daniels? What are the benefits? Khutliso Daniels is now not the only school offered nutrition program by Government. However, before that we were the only high school before the Government introduced theirs. We started this nutrition program in our initiatives in order to supplement and sustain the little they managed to eat at their homes. What would your general comments be regarding the school development in general? Our school has drastically improved in most areas, namely, academically, sporting activities, networking with other institutions and with Rhodes University, centre for community activities. It has been a centre for hosting many activities such as Matric Spring School, Matric incubation classes, for winter school classes and other activities such as Upstart, and others. The school has gathered aplenty of resources and has networked with community and institutions to get sponsored resources, such as the computer lab with e-learning program, mobile computer unit sponsored by Dimension Data, facilitated by Rhodes University, etc. The school has also extended help to its feeder schools.

New principal at Our future is Nyasa at stake

Grade 10 learners Nathaniel Nyaluza High School or the past few years our school has been faced with many challenges. The teacher strike at the beginning of the year has done more damage than good. Late last term, as Grade 10s at our school were told that we will not be writing the June examinations this year. We didnt really understand the reason behind this. No one really explained to us what was happening. We came to the conclusion that it was because at the beginning of the year we did not have a Life Sciences teacher for a long while. What about all our other subjects, why did we not write exams for those? We have dreams that we want to achieve in this life. Education is important in making those dreams come true. We want to learn to make our dreams come true but this is hard without teachers to teach us. In years to come we will not be able to choose our careers because we wont know where to start. Each Grade 10 teacher at school decided to take each class and give them small class tests instead of writing the June exams. The teachers decided to give us an internal paper because of the situation we were faced with. That is the decision they came up with and as the learners we had no choice but to accept it and hope that we pass these tests. We hope that in future this will not happen again.

Nosifundo Faba, Nqatyiswa Ncwadi and Nolusindiso Mpehlo Grade 10 Nathaniel Nyaluza High School

Our new principal arrived on the 1st of June, his name is Mr Tyala and he was previously at Graeme College. He has made promises to us as learners such as stopping the thugs that come into our school; stopping the chaos that learners cause around the school as well as to stop learners that skip classes to play soccer.

Under the guidance of the new principal, our school is one of the schools that have a feeding scheme. He has also made changes in terms of the time that school starts. Now at 8am the school gates are locked. Those that are not in school by that time will only enter the school grounds at break time. He makes sure that the teachers are in class during their periods. We are thankful that we have a new principal and that everything is back on track after several years of not having a principal. We wish him well.

Debating championships
F
The Upstart debating team ive Upstart debaters from Ntaba Maria and Khutliso Daniels were chosen to attend a provincial debating competition in Queenstown last term. These debaters were Sisipho Ndibaza, Live Bede, Luthando Ncokothwane, Anathi Madinda and Thandile Lumkwana. What a fun and amazing trip it was. We went to Queenstown with our debating mentors from Rhodes University. It was such a long ride to Queenstown; it took us between three and four hours. When we got there we went to Queenstown College for Boys where we were staying. We arrived in Queenstown on Friday and left on Sunday. The food that we ate the whole weekend was absolutely delicious. The Upstart team was named the Makana Bulldogs. Our first debate was against Sterling High School from East London. Our motion was This house believes that housewives and househusbands must demand wages from the working spouse. We lost that debate. We also lost the second debate against Victoria Girls High. However, we won our third debate against KwaKomani. We then lost our fourth and last debate against Graeme College who buried us alive. Most of us were angry that we lost but considering that it was our first debate, we didnt do too badly. We were the youngest team there and we thought that people would laugh at us but they were very kind. They supplied us with everything that we needed and even shared their computer games with us. The two remaining teams to debate were Holy Cross and Collegiate High School for Girls. Collegiate won the debate. We learnt a few lessons from the championships. We learnt how to prepare for a debate and to formulate an argument. We also learnt how to debate and work as a team. There were a number of factors why we didnt win most of our debates, including not knowing all of the debating rules. Now we are learning these rules and will do better in other debating championships.

Computer Training
Ziphozihle Goje Grade 10 Nombulelo High School The holiday was not only about having fun at the Festival, it began with learning computer skills. Computer skills are very helpful in this generation were in because almost everything is controlled using technology. I would like to thank our teacher Luvuyo and Upstart for the opportunity. Onela Mqakamba Grade 10 Ntsika High School I would like to thank BhutLuvuyo for all he has done for us. He taught us how to use a computer especially Microsoft Word. I learnt new things that I didnt know before about the computer. I appreciate all the kindness that he showed us during his classes, although at times we gave him trouble and he was disappointed with us. Big up BhutLuvuyo, we love you. Siphosethu Pama Grade 10 Ntsika High School I would like to send this shout out to thank my beautiful instructors Sis Zandi, Julie and Luvuyo for their hard work over the holidays. I send this message on behalf of the Upstarters to thank you for all that you had prepared for the holiday; it made it so much fun. Thank you for allowing me to be a part of the computer literacy project. It was my first time learning to work on Microsoft Word, PowerPoint and the internet. I am now computer literate. Thank you.

FJP Winter School

Siyamthanda Dyantyie Grade 10 Nombulelo High School During the National Arts Festival five Upstarters were chosen to attend the Future Journalists Programmes Winter School. The FJP project is an initiative of Highway Africa and is run with the help of lecturers from the Rhodes University School of Journalism. Journalism students from different universities all over the country were part of this programme. Upstarters were paired up with these students who guided us and mentored us during this week. As part of the programme we watched plays at the Arts Festival and reviewed them. We didnt just write the reviews but we were taught to approach the writing from different angles. This was the most exciting part of the programme for me. We interviewed people on what they thought about the Festival, whether it created employment for the people or created crime opportunities for the youth. We worked in groups with the university students to finish the stories on time. One of the things we learnt is how to produce work under pressure and stick to a deadline. It is important as journalists and young people to always be on time and that if you want to get something done you must believe and have confidence that anything is possible. Every morning we were excited because we knew that every day was a wonderful adventure. To Sim Kyazze, Anele Ngwenya, Nqobile Sibisi and Nina thank you for guiding us and giving us the opportunity to be a part of the FJP Winter School. Thank you to Upstart for the opportunity as well.

Lelethu Mtho Grade 11 Khutliso Daniels High School My name is Lelethu Mto; I am a learner and the RCL secretary at Khutliso Daniels High School. In 2011 I was elected to be class leader and that was an amazing experience. This year I expected to be led by a new class leader but to my surprise I was re-elected. I was shocked considering that this is only my second year at the school. I also wondered what was so special about my leadership. I went through a self-exploration till then I saw what kind of leader I am. I am a democratic leader. I mobilize, I am one who focuses on influencing others in a positive manner, I am goal-driven and I lead by example. I believe that as a leader you need to be a role model -your actions must say something positive and you need to be a motivator to your followers. Encourage them and communicate with them. I believe such process creates transparency and build up their hopes and confidence in you. As a leader you need to listen to your followers not always be the only decision-maker, you need to involve them into the decision-making process.

Siyasamkela Ntsunguzi Grade 8 Ntaba Maria Primary School I am Siyasamkela Ntsunguzi. At school I am a monitor and I work with the teachers. I face many difficult challenges each and every day. At times I wish that I was not a monitor. Some of the challenges I face include other learners who are in trouble coming up with the same excuses over and over again. I try to overcome these challenges by being nice and sweet to other learners. I think that the majority of learners in the higher grades know that I am not rude so they do things in my presence knowing that I will politely ask them to stop what they are doing. Last term I had this

The Grahamstown Trading Post is a schools supplement which comes out every month, and lists the services and goods schools in Grahamstown are willing and able to share or donate to one another. The schools supplement also serves as a forum where individuals from the business community or the general public can offer to donate goods or services in response to needs identified by the schools. Over the past very difficult challenge five months schools have been trading resources such as text between me and one books, desks and sports equipment with one another. Skills of my close friends. training workshops, motivational talks, sports coaching sessions She did not follow have also been traded among the schools. She thought that I would leave it but I was strong enough to report her to the teacher responsible for neatness. Being a monitor is tiring at the same time it is an enjoyable responsibility to have. I am glad that I face challenges because they prepare me to become a better person in the future.

Babalwa Sankobe Grade 9 Ntaba Maria Primary School My name is Babalwa Sankobe, Grade 9 learner and a member of the RCL at school. Being a leader is not an easy task to do but it is a nice experience. The reason I say this is that as a leader you face many challenges. The challenges that I have faced include children who do not have

respect. Some of them backchat you when you are trying to advise them where they have gone wrong. On the other hand I enjoy being a leader because once you become a leader people look up to you. To others you become their role model. If you are chosen as a leader then that means that people believe that you can do the job and they believe that you are responsible.

Anathi Madinda Grade 9 Khutliso Daniels High School The closing parade of the National Arts Festival was super awesome. We were dressed in the costumes and they were so hot and heavy, I had difficulty breathing. I was leading the Upstart group and we were dancing non-stop. I was tired but I had to keep dancing until we reached our destination. By the time we reached our refreshments stop I needed water and to take off the costumes head. It was a great National Arts Festival and thank you Upstart, we love you. I had a great time with the Upstarters but because my cousins were also in town I had to spend time with them and miss out on other shows. The show that I watched and enjoyed a lot was Sorry, wrong number. The show was very interesting as it had a lot of cell phones ringing while the actors were on stage. I think the main idea of the play was to show us that wrong numbers can help rescue a person in trouble. A woman, Leona tried calling her husband at the office and heard people plotting to kill someone. She tried to help that person not knowing that the plot was against her. In the end she was killed. It was a really interesting story, exciting and a pleasure to watch. Siphesihle Budaza Grade 10 Nombulelo High School I would love to thank you for all you have done for us during the National Arts Festival. Even though it was cold we managed to come to all the shows and everyone who participated loved it. Some of the Upstarters had never been to see shows at Fest before but you opened doors for them and gave them the opportunity to see wonderful performances. The performances that we watched were all relevant to us as they taught us things about the life we live. What can I say about wearing the costumes? It was fascinating although it was hot in there. I have never worn a costume like that before and you have given me an opportunity to be myself and to wear something that people love. Thank you very much.

We watched different shows from theatre to poetry all over town at venues such as Rhodes University and Victoria Primary School. We really enjoyed this experience. It is the best thing we have done in our lives so far. A highlight for us was wearing the costumes, it was an amazing idea. We wore the costumes to bring fun to the children at the festival. We walked in the costumes all the way to the Village Green and Fiddlers Green to have fun with young children. We met some lovely and caring young children who were excited about seeing us in the costumes. The costumes included Winnie the Pooh, Zebra, Panda, Rabbit, Pink Panther and Teddy Bear. We want to thank the people that took care of us during the festival Sis Julie, Sis Mpumi and Sis Zandi.

for Mandela Day

Upstarters at Ntsika High School We were touched and humbled by this experience. By the time that we were introduced to the Grade 5 learners we could see that they were very excited to start reading. One learner was even crying because she has never had someone read to her. We had a good time bonding with the children because some of some still have that childish sense of humor. Being near young minds made us emotional because it was surprising that they are future leaders are still so confident and positive. They look forward to being in bigger, better places some day. This changed the way that we see things. We were touched to be around children so pure and positive. We wish Nelson Mandela a happy birthday and we are who we are today because of him.

Upstarters at Khutliso Daniels High School What a great way to spend our 67 minutes with the little kids at CM Vellem. It was a great way to honour Nelson Mandela. We had the Grade 2s and we read them stories, played games with them and sang happy birthday to Madiba. Some of them really enjoyed spending that time with us and their teachers appreciated what we did for their learners. We were excited when we heard about this idea, excited by the idea of sharing our love for reading with others. We talked with them about respect, loyalty and honesty. If it wasnt for Upstart, we wouldnt have spent our day in this great way. Thank you Upstart and we hope that Nelson Mandela enjoyed his birthday!

A trip to

ast term, participants involved in the Big Brother/Big Sister project had their second official meeting with their siblings at the Roxbury Cinema. Upstart would like to thank the Rhodes University students involved in this initiative for organising this event.

Sinothando Tyelbooi Grade 9 Archie Mbolekwa Higher Primary School My big sister means a lot to me and I have learnt a lot from her. Having a big sister on my side has been such a wonderful thing. In reality, I do not have a big sister so I thank God by giving me a sister who will take care of me and advise me. My sisters name is Adrienne; she likes to smile and makes me happy. We like to chat because we believe that communication is important. When she came back from the holidays, she asked me about my holidays. We chat about my school work and she asks me about my homework. She is such a lovely and kind person.

Phakama Ndayi Grade 9 Archie Mbolekwa Higher Primary School Together with our big brothers and sisters we went to watch the movie Hulk 3the Avengers on at Roxbury Cinema. A lot of us enjoyed the movie and it was nice to spend the whole day together. For some of us, it was the first time going to the cinema. After the movie we went back to Atherstone House a res on campus to have lunch and to play some music. Mandilive played some music for us and mentor and mentee had to be on the dance floor together. It was nice to spend time with my big brother Mhlengi. He comes from KwaZulu Natal and has four sisters. He likes to laugh when someone makes a joke and he likes to play soccer.

Nobathembu Nxawe Grade 9 Archie Mbolekwa Higher Primary School Spending time with my big brother for the second time was a little better than the first time. I think it is hard for him to understand me because we hardly have conversations. I understand because in reality I do not have a big brother so I really think having a brother is such a cool thing. He looks funny and cool so I think as time goes on we will become best buds. Going out with our brothers and sisters to the Roxbury Cinema was amazing and extremely exciting. So I would like to say a big thank you to our big brothers and sisters and the Upstart staff. Thank you to our brothers and sisters for taking the time to spend with us. Thank you very much and may God bless you all.

Meet the Young Womens Dialogue team

Thina Mgweba YWD Committee member he Young Womens dialogue is a sub-programme under Pan African Youth Dialogue (PAYD) that aims to encourage young women in the community (grades 8-10) to participate in identifying issues that affect them as individuals, as well as their communities. We encourage young girls to actively participate in working towards finding solutions for the problems they face and ask the right questions through the dialogue or other avenues. The YWD organising team is comprised of four members Lihle Mancoba, Patronella Nqaba, Sikho Mgweba and Thina Mgweba. All of them are certified peer educators, which makes it easier to deal with many situations as they have been trained in this field. All four of the team members are in their honours year of study. This team is very dynamic; all with bold personalities but with one common passion of being agents of change in these young girls lives, encouraging them to become respectable leaders in society and dream big, because nothing is impossible. Our purpose is to encourage the

young women to be self-aware as well as sensitive to their environment, whilst allowing them to form new and widely informed worldviews. We seek to ensure that the young women know of the opportunities available to them and that they take action to make use of them, whilst believing that they can be anything they want to be. As YWD we focus on a range of topics, with the particular aim of encouraging the young women to value selfdevelopment in all areas of their lives, as well as community development. Our topics have included topics such as Getting to Know Me, Leadership, Communication skills and My life, My Community and My life, My Friendships. The girls are also encouraged to choose their own topics and we are often amazed with what they come up with. We are also in the midst of organising guests that will come and speak to the girls and encourage them by sharing their personal journeys: where they have come from, where they are and where they are going. This we know will be very encouraging to the girls as these are people they can relate to, who have the ability to inspire them and know they can do the same.

he Superdog Sporo t
L
By Anelisa Valela ong, long ago in a planet called Zahara, there was a big explosion that destroyed the whole planet. Luckily, a little puppy had survived the explosion. The puppys spacecraft landed on a planet called planet Earth. The puppy had landed in a very far away village. In this village lived the Xhosa people, who were very kind and humble people who took the puppy in as one of their own. The family that took him in named the puppy Sporo and he had fun living in the village. However, he was a very strange dog because his fur would change its colour each and every year. Mngwevu, who was Sporos owner, got a new job in Jozi and his whole family had to move there to start a new life. After a long, long journey they finally arrived in Jozi. Sporo was really anxious to live in a totally different environment. Sporo was used to the peaceful and quiet environment in the village. In Jozi there was a lot of noise and the crime rate was really high, and Sporo decided to do something. After settling into their new home which was even more beautiful than the one they used to live in, and after they had finished eating lunch, Sipho who was Mngwevus son, took Sporo for a walk to view the city of Johannesburg and while they were still enjoying the view of Jozi, something happened! Sporos dog tag lit up, sensing that someone was in trouble and he had an idea about how he could help this person. He had a trick up his sleeve. Sporo transformed into a Super Zaharian. His plan was not to use violence but to scare the thug off and never do crime again. It seems like Sporos plan worked and now the thug is scared out of his daylights. He swore never to do crime ever again and Sporo was pleased to hear that. While Sporo was busy fighting crime and helping others on planet earth, someone else had other plans for him. Before planet Zahara was destroyed, it was a very peaceful and harmonious place. The Zaharians were kind, helping and loving creatures. The Zaharians were also very powerful creatures but they did not boast about their powers. But there was a creature who didnt like the Zaharians and that person-like creature was Zamboza, the one who had destroyed planet Zahara. Zamboza was a really mean and cold-hearted little creature who always wanted things to go his way. Zamboza always wanted to get rid of the Zaharians and he had succeeded in his quest to destroy their planet. But he hadnt destroyed all of them. Zambozas plan was to destroy the last Zaharian even if it meant he had to destroy the whole of earth. Zamboza did a lot of thinking with his team. For starters, they didnt even know where to find Sporo, plus they didnt even know his name. But one of the team members had sensed super Zaharian power coming from planet Earth, and they decided to take a trip to look for this Zaharian. Zamboza decided to track Sporo down and eventually he found him. On the first day Zamboza decided to check the planet out and after hed done this he found something that could be useful to him. He found out that the humans had something in common with him the jealousy that drove them to do bad things. Zamboza used that against them and used it to turn the humans against Sporo and serve Zamboza instead. Zamboza knew that Sporo would not do anything to harm anyone because it was not in his nature, and Zamboza used this against him. Now the humans were out for Sporos blood and were out to kill him as they were ordered by their new master Zamboza. The humans were in huge numbers as they all wanted one thing to kill Sporo! Zamboza destroyed each and every beautiful thing that had existed on planet earth. Zamboza used his human-demons to catch Sporos attention. Sporo had to come up with a plan to save planet earth and had to come up with it quickly because Zamboza was killing the planet and its people who were Sporos friends. Sporo figured he would need someone to help him win this fight against Zamboza. Sporo remembered his old friends from the village that also had powers like him; the only difference was that they were not born on another planet. They were humans but with the same powers. Sporo went to the village to see whether they would like his plan. Fortunately he found them as healthy as they could be and it seemed Zamboza hadnt found their village yet. Sporo told them that they sho8ld for their own group to fight against Zamboza. so what do you say guys? Are you in? Sporo asked. Sporo, my friend, Id do anything for you and for my planet, one of the villagers said. Now the villagers all had one vision so they called themselves The Superpowers. Now Sporo had enough support to take on Zamboza and also free the people he had hostage. The plan was solid, and a really smart one too because Zamboza was a really smart evil genius and they had to beat him. Sporo had to think really hard about how they could bring Zamboza down and stop him from destroying planet earth. Each and every one of The Superpowers had special talents and Sporo thought they could use them. First up is John. John has the power to make things move using his mind and John can also read minds and can even predict the future. Next is Peter who has amazing strength. His friends even call him Superman. Next was Petros, who had the power to become invisible and can change into any shape or object that he touches. The last member of The Superpowers was Sporo and he had lots of powers. The ability to fly, to become invisible and he also had amazing strength and vision. Sporo thought long and hard on how to bring Zamboza down without using violence. Sporo and The Superpowers now had a plan. They all had to go through the plan again to make sure they were all in the same page. Firstly John would distract Zamboza and his followers by lifting some of Zambozas guards into the air. Then Peter would grab them and put them in a net and Petros and Sporo would try catch Zamboza while he is running away. The plan went ahead, and fortunately Petros and Sporo caught Zamboza as they were waiting for the galaxy police officers to arrive. Zamboza said something that caught Sporos attention. Zamboza said that before planet Zahara blew up into a million pieces he discovered that the Zaharians had five magic balls that enabled them to call upon the Titanium God, and this God would

grant the one who had summoned him three wishes. Sporo had to know where Zamboza had hidden the magic balls. Sporo begged Zamboza to tell him where he had hidden the magic balls but Zamboza refused to tell him and swore to never tell anyone until his death. Sporo was determined to find these balls as it was his only hope for bringing the Zaharians back to life. Luckily, Peter knew a lot about computers and gadgets and designed a ball navigator that tracked down the exact spot where the balls were being kept. Sporo used Zambozas spaceship and The Superpowers wished him well on his journey to find the balls. A few months later, Sporo returned to planet earth with all the magic balls and was ready to prepare fort eh ceremony to call upon the Titanium God. All his friends were pleased to see him. Sporo shouted: I call forth the God of Gods. I call unto you with pure intentions. I call upon the Titanium God! Sporo waited anxiously to see if the word worked or not. The sky went dark and filled with lightening and then a giant dog appeared in the sky. Sporo started asking for his three wished. His first wish was for all the humans to be normal again. His second wish was for Zamboza to turn into a good hearted creature. His third and final wish was for his planet and people to come alive once again. The titanium God answered: It shall be done! And it was done. Now Sporo had to decide whether to go to his home planet or stay on earth. In the end he decided he would be earths guardian while living on planet Zahara.

By Mikaila Thurgood er first memory is of going to primary school in Port Elizabeth. I remember my mother taking me. It was a bit scary. My mother was going to leave me here and how was I going to survive with all these big kids? But it wasnt what I expected. The school was fantastic and the teachers always motivated us to do things that would brighten up our futures. Anelisa Valela took her teachers advice and has a future that is lit up with possibilities. As a grade nine learner at C.M. Vellem Higher Primary, Anelisa is an example of how reading can set you above the rest. An avid reader of fantasy books and an Upstart member, Anelisa has had an opportunity to shine over the years. My teachers always say dont settle for less, we should aspire to be more, she says. One of her teachers happens to be Mpumi Frans, a teacher who is determined to get her learners reading and engaging with books. As a member of Upstart Anelisa has been given great access to a number of books. She recalls reading a book called Flipped, which was about a boy who moves to a new neighbourhood. Anelisa was able to relate to this story, having come from Port Elizabeth to Grahamstown after the passing of both her parents in 2009. Initially unsure in her new environment she has settled in and loves her school and all the friends she has made. She has even settled into a sneaky routine with all her cousins: When we get into trouble we all get into trouble at the same time. My grandmother gets confused with which one to blame or punish and then we get away with it. Its really nice, she says. After school Anelisa can be found at Duna Library in Joza, hunting for books about witches, princes and dragons. She feels that the library doesnt cater fully to her tastes and when she confronted the librarian about having more advanced book she was shot down: She said the books that I like are for old people and I shouldnt be reading them. I asked why? Why shouldnt I read books at that level? She thinks that because Im in grade nine and I live in the township I cant, she says. Anelisa is fully aware of her potential and wont let anything stand in her way. When Anelisa grows up she wants to be involved in computers or science her mind is all numbers and equations. Reading has given her an extra edge. Her love of stories has provided her with a vivid imagination. She is able to think outside the box and follow her teachers advice to head on to achieve greatness.

Title of the book: Broken Promises Author: Ros Haden Luleka Mdlungu Grade 9 Archie Mbolekwa Higher Primary School he main characters in this book are Ntombi, Mzi, Zakes, Zinzi, Olwethu and Ntombis mother. Ntombi is a learner at Harmony High School. She loves to sing and to write her own lyrics. She entered the South Africas teen voice competition but she could not go to all the practices. She was worried because the auditions were getting very close. She could not go to the practices because her mother had a new boyfriend Zakes and she was always going out with him. Ntombi then had to sit at home and look after her little sister Zinzi. Ntombi meets this boy Mzi that she is excited about because he is one of the hottest boys in school. She wants to spend a lot more time with him having fun. But there is something dodgy about Mzi and Zakes. They seem to know each other but they pretend that they dont know each other. They are hiding something and Ntombi can feel it but has no way of getting to the truth. I learnt a lot of things from reading this book. For example, I learnt that I must never go far away from home with a person or people I do not know. This is because anything can happen and I would have no way of identifying the strangers. It is also important to inform family and friends of where you are going. Do not trust anyone but do listen to friends when they warn you against something that you are doing. I learnt that when I see that what I am doing will destroy me I must stop it before it is too late. Title of the book: Sugar Daddy Authors: Ros Haden and Dianne Case Khonaye Mpofana Grade 9 Archie Mbolekwa Higher Primary School

Title of the book: The breadwinner Author: Patricia Barnard Siphosethu Dondashe Grade 8 CM Vellem Primary School he story is about a boy Hendrik who didnt want a girlfriend and wanted to be free. He just wanted to play soccer, practice his running and go fishing with his friend Tom. He also wanted to see his mother smiling, make her happy. Hendrik had a brother who lived and worked in Joburg and came home during the holidays and brought him and his mother gifts; he was the family breadwinner. Hendrik was motivated by his brother to do well at his studies. Hendrik had a difficult time at school because this other girl, Gloria had a crush on him; she wanted to be his girlfriend. He resisted Gloria because he did not want to disappoint his brother. However, Gloria was a difficult girl and she did not take no for an answer. Once Hendrik had to run and hide in the school toilet to get away from her. Hendrik could not say no to Gloria anymore and he agreed to go to a birthday party with her. That was their first official date as boyfriend and girlfriend. At the party Gloria danced so close to him and hugged him so tight he could not breathe. Suddenly Gloria grabbed his hand and led him to the bedroom. She was much bigger than him and all the other couples were laughing at him. Hendrik did not want to be there, he wanted to be at home kicking around his soccer ball. Gloria was so angry and warned him to never come near her again. Hendrik was glad that he got away in time. At the end of the school term a nurse was invited to speak to the students about HIV/AIDS. Hendrik was glad he did not give in to Gloria, who denied the existence of the virus. The story is aimed at educating the youth about the dangers of HIV/Aids.

o summarise the story Busi felt left out of her friends group because she was not as talented as them. She could not sing, dance or act. During a school assembly, one of her friends was announced a winner of a talent competition. She could not take it anymore; she felt jealous and decided to leave school that day. She climbed out through a broken window and ran into the street. Then she met Parks, a handsome taxi driver who offered to give her a lift. Little did she know that her life was about to change. Parks was charming and he bought her a lot of stuff, she got hooked. Soon she found herself out of her depth because there were a lot sticky situations that she found herself in. parks also had a secret, he was married. Then Busis life was turned upside down. I have learnt a lot of things form the book. I learnt that we must not date people that are older than us because if you date someone that is older than you are, he/she will take advantage of you. He/she will buy you nice things, take you out to fancy places, buy you clothes, food and many things but that person will want something from you and it will be hard for you to give them what they want. This book also teaches us about safety, especially for young girls because it is not safe at all when you date someone older than you. Sugar Daddies will always want you to sleep with them and after having sex with you; you will fall pregnant and face the consequences of having unprotected sex such as HIV/Aids. The book sends a very powerful message that we must not start dating at an early stage and that to young girls must not date old people. I enjoyed reading the book and will share it with my friends.

The book is about a black South African man, Ndi, who falls in love with a white woman, Veronica. Ndi was unemployed and therefore liked walking around the streets of Durban and going by the beach. At the time, black and white people were separated from each other even at the beach. There was one side for black people and one side for white, separated by a fence. It was a hot October day when Ndi and Veronica first met at the beach. She was standing on the other side of the fence and they exchanged looks. This was the beginning of their love affair. They knew that it was against the law for black and white people to be in a relationship. They had to keep it a secret. One day Veronica allowed Ndi to follow her back to her house close to the other side of the beach. Ndi knew that he was not allowed on the other side but he took a chance. Someone saw them together and went to the police station to report what he saw. Veronica felt that she had no choice but to say that Ndi had raped her. He was arrested and taken to court for the rape. Only white judges were in court and Veronica denied that she knew Ndi. He was arrested and sentenced to life in prison for a crime he did not commit. What I loved about this book is that it tells us to stop criticising each other and to stop racism because love has no boundaries. This book is available at the library.

he characters in this book are Lauren, Max, Jessica, Samantha, Michael, Mr and Mrs Foster, Mr and Mrs Parker, Tina and Jody. This story is about the adventures that Lauren and her pony/ unicorn Twilight go through. During their adventures they met Jessica and her step-sister Samantha who lived in the same farm they lived in; they even went to the same school. The step sisters got to know Lauren and Twilight and decided that they too would like to have ponies. Lauren helped them to buy a pony called Sandy; she was beautiful and interesting too. When they were at the pony farm, Lauren saw a beautiful pony called Moonshine and she was interested in buying Moonshine. Lauren wondered if Moonshine was a unicorn too and asked Twilight to turn into a unicorn and find out. Moonshine revealed himself to them to be unicorn. During this time they met Michael who was adopted by his foster parents after his mother died. Michael had built a relationship with Moonshine and Lauren could see that he could take good care of him. The only problem was convincing Michaels parents Jody and her husband to buy him Moonshine. Michaels parents also thought it was a good idea to surprise Michael with Moonshine as a gift. Michael was happy to get his own pony. Lauren told him about Moonshines secret in a funny way. I enjoyed reading this book, young people and even those who do not like to read will enjoy it. It is available at the library.
