Farnborough
International air Show (FIa) 2012
BY D R . J EF F REY BRAD FORD

show was sold out with an increased number of exhibiting companies (1506) compared to the 2010 show (1450). Farnborough 2012 also saw engagement from political decision-makers with some fifteen UK Government ministers including the Prime Minister participating, as well as ministers from overseas plus 70 delegations from 46 countries, in attendance. Orders for the show to date totaled some $72 billion (~46.6 billion). This is significantly up on the orders for 2010 which were $47 billion (~31 billion), and only 16bn down from the peak boom year in 2008 when the show saw $88.7 billion of orders. Much of the activities underpinning Farnborough occur inside discrete corporate chalets over the course of the day whilst from lunchtime onward aircraft of all kinds take-off, perform and land continually. his Farnborough, few aircraft would look physically different to previous years. The Boeing/Airbus commercial battle between the A380 super-jumbo and A787 Dreamliner continues. The A400M military transport being created by Airbus to compete against the Lockheed Martin C-130 Hercules continues progress, albeit slow to fruition. The author remembers the first visit to Farnborough in 1990 which had a full-size wooden mock-up of the aircraft over twenty years ago. The tilt-rotor V-22 Osprey being developed for the US Marine Corps and armed forces was in attendance as was a non-flying Virgin Galactic spacelauncherone and its entrepreneurial leader Richard Branson, acting to capture the bulk of the pizzazz at the show. Under the surface the principal changes and areas of excitement (not to mention business opportunities) for industry are focused on robotics, unmanned aerial vehicles, drones and electronics. The unmanned K-Max helicopter was reported recently to have delivered over 1,000,000 lbs of supplies to troops serving in Afghanistan. No matter how the industry changes to meet new technological opportunities or customer requirements it is certain that the Farnborough International Airshow (FIA) will continue to hold a key place in the industry calendar roll on FIA 2014! held once every two years in the South of England, the Farnborough International air Show (FIa) is one of the worlds premier events. In the first instance Farnborough brings together the commercial and military aviation worlds in a unique trade-show and then for a couple of days the general public visit to see and watch a wide variety of aircraft demonstrate their capabilities.

hilst Farnborough neatly fit in between the Queens Diamond Jubilee celebrations and the start of the 2012 London Olympics the halo effect was tempered by the global nature of the aviation industry today. The continued economic difficulties around the world, high fuel costs, and declining travel budgets and continued pressure on government defence spending continue to buffet the industry.
