Los Lunas
The whole school environment
is going to be very different at Los
Lunas High School this year because
of school renovations.
The plan is to have the new school
completed in two years.
Administrative offices have all
been demolished, and several por-
tables will fill the front, west side
parking lot by the solar panels.
Only the east side parking lot
will be available for staff and visitor
parking. Students will park on the
far east side of the school next to the
football field.
Visitors will come in the front
entrance as usual, and signs are
posted to guide them to the portable
front office.
Parents should be familiar
with this because we started doing
this toward the end of the spring
semester as we started the trenching
and putting up the fences for con-
struction, said Los Lunas Schools
Superintendent Bernard Saiz. We
had to move the students out of that
front parking lot as portables were
being brought in. So, people should
be familiar with this, it wont be
any different than the way school
year ended. Drop off will remain the
same.
The demolition of the old cafete-
ria building will be completed before
students return to school, and about
one third of the student population
will have their classes in portable
classrooms.
More portables will be located
near the agriculture building behind
the gymnasium.
There will be construction
throughout the school year, Saiz
said. Students will be separated
from where the construction will
be taking place, and once that piece
is finished, students who are in the
portables will be moved into the new
part of the building while we knock
down another part.
Probably every student at the
school will spend some time in the
portables and some time in the brick
and mortar buildings, either recon-
structed or newly constructed, Saiz
said.
Lunches will be served in a porta-
ble cafeteria and kitchen in a temper-
ature-controlled tent to keep students
and staff comfortable.
Were going to be monitoring
really closely that environmental
standards are being followed and
everything is safe, Saiz said.
The athletic facility will remain
untouched, and sports games in the
gym or out in the field will not be
affected.
Nor will the theater arts depart-
ment be affected, but part of the
agricultural building will be demol-
ished while a new, state-of-the-art
structure is built.
Were really looking forward to
it, Saiz said. The plans look beau-
tiful with the landscaping plans and
the whole bit.
Bricks from the old building can
be purchased for $100, and alumni
can have their names engraved on
them. Those bricks will be used in
the new schools bricked entryway.
Other than the major changes
brought by construction of the high
school, only incremental changes
for continued program progress are
planned.
There has been additional cuts
in teachers and administrative staff,
so the district is operating with less
staff.
But we expect to continue to
make gains as we have been, even
with the additional cuts to our staff-
ing, Saiz said.
There are no changes to the math,
reading and language curriculum,
and there are no plans for any huge
changes to programs, he said.
But Valencia High School has
added an auto mechanics course,
taught in cooperation with the
University of New Mexico-Valencia
Campus, to offer high school as well
as college credit.
The course is available to Los
Lunas High School students in night
school, the superintendent said.
School officials and staff will be
looking more closely and in greater
detail at student data this year, to
see why specific grades may not be
progressing as fast as they need to or
why specific teachers arent getting
the same gains as a teacher down the
hall, and why specific groups of stu-
dents may not be advancing as fast as
others, Saiz said.
Were taking steps to correct
that, he said. I think that parents
and teachers and students are going
to see a lot more oversight in making
sure that teachers are teaching what
needs to be taught, in the sequence it
needs to be taught, and if theyre not
doing that, then we will intervene.
Disciplinary incidents have
declined dramatically over the past
year, the superintendent said, and
the district will continue with the
process it has used to decrease them,
and hold students accountable for
their behavior.
Measures of Academic Progress,
or MAPS testing, will be continued
to monitor student progress.
It allows us to do the interven-
tions, which we plan to continue to
do this year, helping the students
who need additional help, Saiz said.
I think thats probably why our
disciplinary and drop out rates have
declined, and graduation rates have
gone up meeting the kids needs
who are having a hard time under-
standing.
There will be some changes in
assessment testing as the district
moves into Common Core State
Standards, but it will be felt mostly
in the third-grade where a bridge test
has been designed to initiate the new
PARCCS, Assessment of Readiness
for College and Careers tests.

Los Lunas High School renovations underway; new course at VHS
Submitted design
ENERGY USAGE for the new
facility has been shown in
the energy model to be sig-
nificantly reduced in the new
campus incarnation. This proj-
ect is designed to exceed the
minimum Energy Star require-
ments, and expected to achieve
an Energy Star rating of 80.
Extrapolating this rating, it is
anticipated the new Los Lunas
High School will reduce overall
energy consumption by 28
percent compared to the base-
line building model used in the
Energy Star analysis.
Submitted design
IN THE NEW incarnation, Los Lunas High School renovations phases 1 and 2 are designed for 1,500
students in the academic areas, grades nine-12, while the core facilities will be designed to support
1,800, accommodating future growth.

LOS LUNAS SCHOOLS Superintendent Bernard Saiz explains how the renovations at Los Lunas High School will affect students and staff. He says parking at the
high school will change because portable classrooms have been installed where students used to park. Students will now park by the football stadium.
I think that parents and teachers and students are going to
see a lot more oversight in making sure teachers are teaching
what needs to be taught ...

Common Core State Standards is geared to provide student success
By DeBorah Fox
News-Bulletin Staff Writer
dfox@news-bulletin.com
Los Lunas
This year, the Los Lunas
School District will formally
begin the process of imple-
menting the Common Core
State Standards in mathemat-
ics, English and language arts.
These standards are being
introduced in United States
classrooms in all but four
states. New Mexico became
the 46th state to adopt CCSS.
The Common Core State
Standards initiative is a
state-led effort coordinated
by the National Governors
Association Center for Best
Practices and the Council of
Chief State School Officers.
It was developed in collab-
oration with teachers, school
administrators and experts
to provide a clear and con-
sistent framework to prepare
students across the nation for
college and the workforce.
Well be taking the
same assessment (tests) as
students in Rhode Island
or Connecticut, Kansas,
California or Montana, said
Los Lunas Superintendent
Bernard Saiz. If youre going
to take the same test, then
you have to teach the same
material that everybody else
is teaching ... All of those
Common Core curriculums
are going to be aligned.
Common Core subjects,
math, science, English and
history, will each have the
same requirements, the same
standards in every grade.
Currently there isnt a
CCSS science standard. It is
being developed.
Text books may vary from
school-to-school, but the stan-
dards of student achievement
at each grade level will be the
same around the nation.
The common part of this
is, now, when we hear that
were 50 percent and some-
body else is 45 percent, it (will
be) a true match up of data, a
true match up of standards,
said Ron Williams, assistant
superintendent.
What (CCSS is) designed
to do is from grade-to-grade
they spiral, so that the con-
cepts keep getting deeper,
and the kids keep seeing them
over and over and over again
all they way through their
schooling.
Some of the changes might
include, for example, students
in kindergarten needing to be
able to count to 100 and in
multiples of 1, 5, 10, 20, as
well as out of sequence, say,
starting at 17.
They will need to have
achieved this by the end of the
school year, and they are like-
ly to be taught concepts that
have normally been taught
only by second grade.
Its much more rigorous
than our current state stan-
dards, said Julie Smith,
director of curriculum.
The focus of common
core is the depth versus the
breadth, Williams said.
They want to get deep into
math ...
Instead of trying to cover
so much in one years period,
its going to be very focused
and spending a lot of time on
certain concepts.
The district has purchased
CCSS English-language arts
curriculum map books, and
all the CCSS suggested read-
ings for K-3 teachers to use as
they deliver the curriculum.
The map books are like an
outline for teachers of what
needs to be taught in order to
reach the standards expected.
Our teachers are going to
hit the ground running, and
our students are going to ben-
efit from that, said Williams.
Most of the suggested
reading are books the district
already has.
The CCSS wants stu-
dents to read more non-fiction
than fiction, said Lena Mae
Chavez, secondary academic
programs coordinator.
Even kindergarten students
will be learning to read with
educational books, rather than
entertainment books.
The move is toward more
informational type texts, the
literary texts, said Smith.
And that move increases by
grade level too, so that by
high school, theyre pretty
much reading informational
texts and understanding it
deeply, because theyre start-
ing at such a lower level in
that informational text.
Through the language arts
curriculum, students will
learn about history, science,
arts, media, music and other
subjects.
School officials and teach-
ers have been busy this sum-
mer going to various trainings
to prepare for this transition
to CCSS.
Principals, academic
coaches and teachers from
each elementary school, plus
curriculum and instruction
and special education, received
intense two-day trainings
from the Dana Center, and
K-3 teachers completed a two-
day training facilitated by the
academic coaches.
The elementary aca-
demic coaches were crucial
in preparing our teachers
for the Common Core State
Standards, said Smith.
The coaches include
Melissa Contreras, Heather
Cummings, Jennifer Gaerlan,
Valeryia Gauthier, Nicole
Henderson, Emma Lovato,
Nicole Mora Atencio, Carl
Nolan, Deanna Saiz, Emily
Sisk-Layman and Laura Tabet.
Academic coaches and
several teachers attended
two MC (Mathematically
Connected Communities) one
day trainings in math, said
Smith.
The district has purchased
CCSS snap-ins, which are
missing curriculum pages for
CCSS that snap into the cur-
riculum books to bring the
math program into par with
CCSS.
The standards are aligned
with college, and work expec-
tations are clear, understand-
able and consistent, said
Smith.
It includes rigorous content
and application of knowledge
through high-order skills,
builds upon strengths and les-
sons of current state standards
and are informed by other top
performing countries, so that
all students are prepared to
succeed in the global econo-
my and society.
The standards are evidence
and research based.
The district is following the
state guidelines in the imple-
mentation of CCSS, starting
with K-3 this year.
These grade levels will
actually be implementing
CCSS curriculum, and will
take an assessment test that is
a combination of the Standard
Based Assessment test and
the CCSSs Assessment of
Readiness for College and
Careers or PARCCS test to
create a bridge from the old
assessment test to the new.
The state time line brings all
grade levels into the Common
Core State Standards by
school year 2014-15, with stu-
dents taking the new CCSS
assessments tests.
Measures for each grade
level are being prepared, and
the training process for grades
four through 12 will begin
this coming school year, said
Smith.
The aim of Common Core
State Standards is to make
students globally competitive
by teaching educational stan-
dards that are used through-
out the world, and give them
the skills and knowledge they
need to succeed in college or
careers, she said.
It is geared to provide all
students access to the same
rigorous standards, regardless
of where they live, or what
their family background is.
A collaboration between
parents, teachers and students
is required to help students
understand what is expected
of them and support their suc-
cess in the globally competi-
tive career market.
Districts across the state
are collaborating to share
resources and expertise in
teaching the CCSS.
The main thing is, the
expectations are going to be
nationwide, said Chavez.
Its not going to be just New
Mexico has these expecta-
tions. Theyre national stan-
dards that everyone is going
to be teaching.
Instead of trying to cover so much in one years
period, its going to be very focused and spending a
lot of time on certain concepts.

Back to school bus safety tips for
parents and students

A new school year means
new routines.
And if your child is one
of the millions of kids who
ride the school bus, you
should be encouraged by U.S.
Department of Transportation
statistics that cite it as the saf-
est mode of transportation for
children to get to and from
school.
Nevertheless, riding the
school bus safely does require
children to be aware and fol-
low specific safety proce-
dures.
Thats why the National
Highway Traffic Safety
Admi nist rat ion and
Chuggington, the educational
animated childrens televi-
sion program, have partnered
to offer parents and children
important school bus safety
tips as part of the Think Safe,
Ride Safe, Be Safe! traffic
safety campaign.
The national traffic safety
campaign helps parents teach
their children about NHTSAs
recommended pedestrian,
school bus, bike and car seat
safety guidelines.
Below are a few school bus
safety tips from the Think
Safe, Ride Safe, Be Safe!
campaign for you to share
with your children to make
riding the school bus a safer
experience:
Be especially careful
around the danger zone,
which is 10 feet in front,
behind and on each side of the
school bus.
To avoid this area, wait for
the bus at least five giant steps
away from the road.
Wait to board the school
bus until the school bus driver
says its safe to do so.
Kids should board one at a
time and use the handrails to
go up and down the stairs.
Once on the school bus,
go straight to your seat and
remain sitting, facing the front
of the school bus.
Look out for cars before
getting off the school bus.
Once off, take five giant steps
away from the school bus.
Wait for the driver or
crossing guard to signal it is
safe to cross the street.
Always look left-right-left
to make sure no cars are com-
ing before crossing the road.
Traffic safety education
should be a positive, shared
family experience. Parents
can go online with children
and take the pledge to Be
Safe! together at www.chug-
gington.com/safety.
In addition to the pledge
(to date, more than 500,000
children have taken the pledge
to Be Safe!), families can
access a safety game, activi-
ties, downloadable tip sheets
and even a free traffic safety
app.
By following the rules,
both parents and children
can help make getting to and
from school each day safer for
everyone.

Los Lunas
As your little one prepares to
enter kindergarten, you may both
find yourselves experiencing a little
bit of anxiety.
But thats normal, says Julie
Smith, director of curriculum at Los
Lunas Schools. Whats important,
she says, is that you remain open
with your child and listen to their
concerns and fears about entering
a new situation, and to be positive
about what is in store for them, about
learning and getting to play with
their peers.
I think that first of all, (parents)
need to be very open with their child,
talk to them a lot, if their child is
showing any anxiety not to act like
its no big deal, but actually listen to
their concerns and then ensure that
its going to be fine, said Smith.
We want it to be a very positive
experience for them, so thats going
to start at home.
One way to ease anxiety for your
brand-new scholar is by contact-
ing the school they will be attend-
ing in advance and visiting it with
your kindergartner-to-be to reduce
the big thing apprehension of it by
seeing that its not so scary, says Ron
Williams, assistant superintendent at
Los Lunas Schools.
Parents of kindergartners should
have also received a kindergarten
readiness checklist that helps par-
ents to prepare their child to succeed
in their new environment or.
Williams advises also using the
checklist as a way to gauge where
their child is at and some things that
they can work on.
However, Williams says, an excit-
ing change is happening for kinder-
garten through third grade in terms
of the debut of Common Core Sate
Standards.
He says they have until now
been using a kindergarten readiness
assessment, which will be replaced
with Common Core, which he calls
more rigorous.
So, he says, the kindergarten
readiness checklist might be seeing
some updates soon, though some
standard expectations for incoming
kindergartners are color, shape and
number identification or familiarity,
as well as self care, such as going to
the bathroom on their own.
And along those lines, we want
parents to teach their children how to
advocate for themselves, specifically
when they need to use the bathroom
or dont feel well, says Williams. If
a child is particularly shy and school
is brand new, they may not be famil-
iar with advocating for themselves.
Williams says the district is going
through some changes with seeing
one school close and Los Lunas High
School undergoing remodeling, so he
advises parents of children affected
by that to be in contact with school
administration to find out what they
need to know or do.
For example, he says transporta-
tion will see some changes in terms
of bus routes for some people.
The driving force, K-12, for us is
we want parents calling us, we want
parents communicating with us, we
want to know what their concerns
are, because its going to better the
product we deliver, he said.
Immunizations are another area
in which parents need to be in con-
tact with schools to make sure their
child is up to date and find out if
there are any new requirements.
Knowing your childs schools
dress code and expectations is also
crucial, says Williams, especially
before going school shopping.
As far as like the younger kids,
its important that you involve them
in the shopping of their clothes and
school supplies so they can get excit-
ed about school, too. So that would
be a recommendation that we have
for parents, is to involve their kids
when theyre doing the shopping,
said Smith.
For kids transitioning from ele-
mentary to middle school, Smith
recommends alleviating some of the
anxiety by having your student pres-
ent during registrant so they can
meet administration and, with their
parent, walk around and become
familiar with the campus.
One thing that I would really
emphasis in this is this very much
should be a united parent-student,
everything they do they should do
together because its going to better
the opportunity for them to be on
the same page as well as understand
what the expectations are at each
school, said Williams.
Smith says that sometimes a stu-
dent might not feel comfortable tell-
ing a teacher if they need help or
if they have an issue, but if they
feel comfortable telling their par-
ent, that parents should notify the
school immediately so that it can be
addressed in a timely manner.
We want a positive school expe-
rience for all kinds and so parents
should never hesitate to contact us,
says Williams.
To add to that, Smith says that if
theres an address or phone change,
to give that information to the school
as soon as possible since that will
effect how the school and teachers
relays important information.
Williams says that all 16 of their
schools host an open house within
the first two to four weeks of school,
providing yet another opportunity
for parents to ask questions or find
out whats going on at their childs
school.

Tech tips to prepare students for the school year
Courtesy of StatePoint
Preparing children for a new school
year is no longer just about stocking up
on pencils and notebooks.
The face of education is changing,
and a well-equipped student should
know how to use new technology to
personalize the learning experience and
succeed in school.
Digital resources and applications
can stimulate and engage students by
providing a more interactive learning
experience, says Dan Caton, president
of McGraw-Hill School Education.
Some of the best digital learning tools
personalize learning, adapt to childrens
individual strengths and help them over-
come unique challenges.
While digital learning may come nat-
urally to children, parents should get up
to speed on technology, as well, to better
understand how new tools and resources
can help their children learn.
Here are some great back-to-school
tech-tips for parents:
Talk to your children and their
teachers about what they want to accom-
plish this year and how they can use
traditional and new learning tools to
meet goals.
Encourage children to use comput-
ers and other web-enabled devices for
more than just games and Facebook.
If you think books are the same as
when you went to school, think again.
New digital textbooks available for
download through applications like
iBooks2, allow you to highlight text,
make notes, or search inside the book.
You can even have your tablet device
read the book to you. Learn how this
technology works so you can keep up
with your kids.
Some forward-thinking schools
are using innovative programs, such
as CINCH Learning, which makes the
complete K-12 math and 7-12 grade sci-
ence curricula accessible online.
Programs such as these go beyond
the textbook, so talk to your childrens
teachers to learn how to maximize the
programs interactive tools and games
from home devices.
Nearly half of all high school stu-
dents who take Advanced Placement
exams fail. But new subscription based
programs, such as the ONboard series
from McGraw-Hill Education, are
providing students with the skills and
knowledge they need to succeed in these
advanced courses. Parents of high school
students should encourage teens to take
advantage of such study aids before
senior year.
Pick a regular time each day dedi-
cated to beefing up vocabulary, improv-
ing spelling, reading together and just
talking about new topics and ideas.
The International Reading Association
recommends giving children choices in
what they read browse the ever-grow-
ing selection of age-appropriate books
and periodicals available for download
to your e-reader.
If youre on a budget, dont stress.
Not all technology will break the bank.
In fact, with a bit of effort, you can
find e-readers on sites such as eBay for
much less than retail cost. And as more
devices come onto the market, prices
will become even more affordable.
Many public libraries offer access to
computers so you can familiarize chil-
dren with basic technology and a range
of digital resources, such as free ebooks.
For more information on how digital
technology is changing the way kids
learn, visit www.mheonline.com. Help
make this school year successful for
your children by learning about new
educational tools.
Parents are encouraged to investigate new devices their children
can use to help their education and broaden their opportunities

Welcome Students, Parents and Staff

Dear Students, Parents, Guardians and Staff,

One of the largest construction projects to be accomplished at one time in the history of Valencia County at
LLHS, participation in the acclaimed and renowned University of Virginia School Turnaround Program, increasing test
scores in the majority of our schools, and national recognition with several of our district programs by out-of-state observers,
sets the stage for the onset of the 2012-13 school year.

It is more difficult to turn around a large ship than it is a small boat. That analogy holds true for Los Lunas Schools, which is
one of the top ten largest of the 89 school districts in the state of New Mexico. Los Lunas Schools has spent the last
several years turning that ship around and the turn has been made. We are seeing steady progress taking place across the
district. Some schools are progressing faster than others, but every school in the district can show data that documents
long-term progress on a test score trend line that Los Lunas Schools established for each school in the district seven years
ago. Our internal business practices, financial management and operations management, are very sound and have been
lauded by various outside entities and professional organizations. Now we just need to pick up speed in moving forward
with our academic gains. Like a turnpike, change begins slowly and as one continues to push, the turnpike picks up speed.

Los Lunas Schools has been praised by out-of-state evaluators from both the North Central Association Commission on
Accreditation and School Improvement (NCA CASI) and the University of Virginia Executive Leadership Program. Each of
these organizations has brought in teams over the last few years with evaluators from different states across the country.
Our curriculum, instructional models, as wells as the makeup of the administrative team and business practices have been
noted as some of the best In the country.

What has held us back is inconsistent delivery of the curriculum, and inconsistent use of instructional models in the
classrooms throughout the district. This school year, specific attention will be paid as to how instruction is being delivered in
each and every school and classroom in the district.

There will be no changes in the curriculum, instructional models and teaching methodologies, but what we have already
established will be honed to a fine edge. We will focus on duplication of what is successful in specific classrooms and
schools across the district that are achieving the highest test scores and proficiency with student academic achievement.
We will continue to use the PLC model, which fosters communication among our teachers and principals to share and
implement best practices.

We will continue with student intervention time in our schedules that provides support for students who need additional
assistance with their assignments, and we will continue to offer advanced level courses and challenging expectations for our
more advanced students.

The 2012-13 School Year is poised to be one of our most successful school years yet. On behalf of the Los Lunas Schools
Board of Education and the Los Lunas Schools Administration, Welcome back to Los Lunas Schools!

Respectfully,

Bernard R. Saiz
Superintendent
Los Lunas Schools
Attention High School Graduates
(Class of 2013)
Beginning with the Class of 2013, New Mexico students must earn at least one
credit of Advanced Placement, dual credit or distance learning in order to
graduate.
Dual Credit courses are college courses that are academic or career technical and
simultaneously earn credit toward high school graduation and a postsecondary
degree or certificate. Remedial, developmental and physical education activity
courses are not eligible for dual credit. Students must receive prior approval from
their school counselor in order to enroll in a dual credit course.
The Advanced Placement (AP) program is a cooperative effort between
secondary schools and colleges and universities. Advanced Placement courses
provide high school students the opportunity to take college level courses in a
high school setting. Students who participate in the program gain college-level
skills and may also earn college credit if they pass the AP course exam with a 3 or
better. Los Lunas High School and Valencia High School offer many AP courses
beginning in a students junior year in high school. AP courses are offered in all
core areas (English, math, science and social studies) and some elective courses.
A distance learning course is an online course that is not remedial, developmental
or a credit recovery course. Distance learning courses are offered at each high
school through E2020 and the University of New Mexico Valencia Campus.
Distance learning is offered through several elective courses.
Research shows that dual credit, Advanced Placement and distance learning
programs can lead to better graduation rates for both high school and college;
reduce the need for remediation; and provide an alternative for students tempted
to leave high school to enter the workforce. Los Lunas Schools is preparing
students for success in high school and college by providing rigorous course
options to help students build a foundation for continuing their education beyond
high school. Our high schools encourage students to immerse themselves in a
combination of core academic classes along with elective courses that focus on a
pathway for the future.

Los Lunas High School Student Dress Code
It is Los Lunas Schools desire to display to the public at all times a high standard of
conduct, dress, attitude, courtesy, and friendliness on the part of each student, which
will be above reproach or criticism. The public will judge our school on the basis of any
and all of these characteristics as found in each student at all times. Therefore, in
keeping with the above desire, a students appearance, mode of dress and/or
cleanliness should not disrupt the educational process or constitute a threat to safety.

If, in an administrators judgment, a students appearance, mode of dress, and/or
cleanliness is distracting and disruptive to the educational process, or constitute a
threat to safety or acceptable standards of sanitation or does not meet the following
regulations, the student will be required to make the requested modifications.
Prohibited Dress:
Clothing, jewelry, or hairstyles disruptive to the learning environment,
such as muscle shirts, undershirts, or clothing that is shredded, off the
shoulder, low-cut, see-through or too short. Bib overalls must have both
straps attached appropriately. No tank tops or spaghetti straps are
allowed. Sleeveless are allowed if entire shoulder is covered.
Pants worn below the waist in a manner that exposes underwear, bare
skin, or which are excessively baggy/saggy.
Pants should not be wider than feet are long.
Shorts or skirts which are higher than the students extended fingers
when standing straight. Shirts/tops which expose skin when arms are
stretched up to shoulder high. Spandex shorts/pants, or spandex Capri
pants.
Clothing, tattoos, or accessories which advertise, display or promote any
drug (including tobacco and alcohol), sexual innuendo, violence,
weaponry, profanity, hate, In memory of or bigotry towards any group.
Headgear of any kind including hats, bandannas, and sunglasses in the
building.
Accessories including, but not limited to, studded bracelets, belts, or
necklaces/collars, belt loop or chain wallets, or any type of chain and
hairnets.
Pajamas/nightwear, slippers.
No trench coats allowed or other coats longer than top of knee.

Consequences for violating student dress standards include immediate change of
clothing, student may be sent home, parents may be asked to bring a change of
clothing for their student, and/or suspension and parent conference.
Valencia High School Student Dress Code
Students shall come to school looking clean, neat, and ready to learn. The district
prohibits pictures, emblems, or writings on materials or clothing that are lewd,
offensive, vulgar, immodest, or promote or refer to alcoholic beverages, drugs, or any
other illegal substance. The district also prohibits any clothing or grooming that in the
principals judgment may reasonably be expected to cause disruption of or
interference with normal operations. Shirts or other clothing items depicting or
promoting acts of violence, guns, weapons, death, dismemberment, disfigurement,
gang activity or affiliation or other offensive items are specifically prohibited.

The following serves as a guideline so there is no question of what is
acceptable:
Sagging pants are not allowed. Jeans, slacks, shorts, and all other
pants must be worn at or about the waist at all times. Even if a shirt is
extremely long, the pants must be worn at the waist. Undergarments
should not be visible at any time.
Pants and other articles of clothing that are torn, ragged, frayed, or pants
with holes are not permitted.
Inappropriate exercise clothing will not be allowed without an appropriate
covering garment.
Sunglasses, caps, hats, bandanas, and other headwear are not to be
brought into the building.
Hairstyles or unnatural hair colors that, in the judgment of the school
principal, cause a disruption of the educational environment are not
allowed.
Clothing should be worn for the purpose for which it was designed. No
undergarments or pajamas are to be worn as outerwear.
Shoes must be worn; house shoes are not permitted.
Earrings are permissible. All other visible body-piercing jewelry or
ornaments are prohibited.
Reasonable standards of modesty must be met.

NATIONAL SCHOOL LUNCH PROGRAM/SCHOOL BREAKFAST PROGRAM
Dear Parent/Guardian:
We are pleased to inform you that children who attend Ann Parish Elementary, Tome Elementary, Desert View Elementary and Century High School will be offered meals free of charge, regardless of income, through the
2012-2013 School Year unless otherwise notified.
All meals served must meet regulations established by the United Stated Department of Agriculture (USDA). However, if a child has been determined by a doctor to be disabled and the disability would prevent the child
from eating the regular school meal, this school will make any substitutions prescribed by the doctor. If a substitution is needed, there will be no extra charge for the meal. If you believe your child needs substitutions
because of a disability, please call us for further information.
CONFIDENTIALITY: School officials will use the information on your application only to decide if your child should get free or reduced price meals. We may inform officials connected with Title I and the National
Assessment of Educational Progress whether your child is eligible for free or reduced price school meals. They will use this information for funding and/or evaluation purposes.
Sincerely,
Angela K. Haney, SNS
Director of Student Nutrition

The U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) prohibit discriminating in all its programs and activities on the basis of race, color, national origin, age, or disability, and where applicable, sex, marital status, family status, parental status, religion, sexual
orientation, generic information, political beliefs, reprisals, or because all or part of an individuals income is derived from any public assistance program (Not all prohibited bases apply to all programs). Persons with disabilities who require
alternative means of communication of program information (Braille, large print, audiotape, etc.) should contact USDAs TARGET Center at (202) 720-2600 (voice and TDD).
To file a complaint of discrimination, write to USDA, Director, Office of Civil Rights, 1400 Independence Avenue, SW, Washington, DC 20250-9410 or call (800) 795-3272 (voice), or (202) 720-6382 (TDD). USDA is an equal opportunity provider

NEW MEXICO PUBLIC EDUCATION DEPARTMENT
STUDENT NUTRITION BUREAU
PUBLIC RELEASE
Los Lunas Schools today announced its policy for free and reduced price meals served under the National School Lunch and/or
School Breakfast Program(s). All schools and the central office have a copy of the policy, which may be reviewed by any interested
party.
The following family size and annual income criteria will be used for determining eligibility:

Eligibility Criteria
FAMILY SIZE Reduced-Price Meals
1 $ 20,036
2 $ 26,955
3 $ 33,874
4 $ 40,793
5 $ 47,712
6 $ 54,631
7 $ 61,550
8 $ 68,469
For Each Additional Family Member add: + 6,919

Children from families whose income level is at or below the levels shown are eligible for free or reduced price meals. Application
forms are being sent to all homes, along with a letter to households. To apply for free or reduced price meals, households should fill
out one application for the household and return it to the school. Additional copies are available at the principal's office in each
school. Applications may be submitted at any time during the year. The information provided by the household is confidential; it will
be used for the purpose of determining eligibility. Information may be verified at any time during the school year by school or other
program officials.

For the school officials to determine eligibility, each household that is now receiving SNAP benefits (Supplemental Nutrition
Assistance Program, formerly the Food Stamp program) or that is on the Family Independence Temporary Assistance Program
(FITAP) must provide its SNAP case number or FITAP number as well as the signature of an adult household member. All other
households must provide the following information on the application: names of all household members; the social security number
of either the parent/guardian who is the primary wage earner, or the adult household member who signs the application, or a
statement that the household member does not possess one; the amount of income (before deductions for taxes, Social Security,
etc.) each household member receives; how often the person receives the income; where it is from, such as wages, retirement, or
welfare; and the signature of an adult household member certifying that the information provided is correct. If a household member
becomes unemployed or if the household size increases, the household should contact the school. Such changes may make the
children of the household eligible for meal benefits.

Foster children who are the legal responsibility of a welfare agency or court may be eligible for benefits. If a household has foster
children and wishes to apply for such meals for them, the household should contact the school for more information.

Directly Certified Households

Households that receive SNAP (Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program, formerly the Food Stamp program) or FITAP benefits
may be directly certified to receive free meals. These households are not required to complete an application, and will be notified by
school officials of their eligibility. SNAP and FITAP households should complete an application if they are not notified of their
eligibility by August 15, 2012 .

School officials determine whether households are directly certified to receive free meals based on documentation obtained directly
from the SNAP/FITAP office, which will certify that a child is a member of a household currently receiving SNAP benefits or an
assistance unit receiving FITAP benefits. Households who are notified of their eligibility but do not want their children to receive free
meals must contact the school.

Under the provisions of the free and reduced price policy, Angela Haney will review applications and determine eligibility. If a parent
or guardian is dissatisfied with the ruling of the official, he may wish to discuss the decision with the determining official on an
informal basis. If the parent wishes to make a formal appeal, he may make either an oral or written response to the following:

You must complete an application to qualify for free or reduced priced meals at any Los Lunas School. You may fill out an online
application or a paper application. You may use any computer with internet access to fill out the online application. The address is:
https://mealapplication.llschools.net or by going to the Los Lunas Schools website and clicking on the Quick Links-Online meal
application on the left side of the page. Computers to fill out the application are available at the Student Nutrition Office, the libraries in
Bosque Farms and Los Lunas and your childs school. If you wish to fill out a paper application, you may call the Student Nutrition Office
and we will be happy to send it to you

Once your application is processed, our automated messaging system will notify you as to your childs meal status. You are responsible
for paying for your childs meals until the application is processed. Please allow a minimum of ten days for application processing. Please
call our office, 866-2490 if you need further assistance with the application.

If you are enrolled in SNAP, TANF or FDPIR you may not have to complete an application to receive free meals. Please call the Student
Nutrition Office at 866-2490 for more information on these programs.

Elementary Schools:
Breakfast Lunch
Paid: $1.00 $1.75 (pending board approval)
Reduced: $0.30 $0.40

Middle Schools:
Paid: $1.00 $2.00 (pending board approval)
Reduced: $0.30 $0.40

High Schools:
Paid: $1.25 $2.00
Reduced: $0.30 $0.40

PAYING FOR MEALS:
Federal Government regulations do not allow Student Nutrition to provide meals free of charge to students who do not qualify for free
meals. All students have an account set up based on his/her student ID number. Meals can be prepaid to the Student Nutrition cashier by
the day, week, month or year. Student Nutrition accepts cash, money orders or personal checks. If you wish to use a personal check, Los
Lunas Schools requires that you complete a check application. The application may be obtained from the school secretary or Student
Nutrition cashier. You may also pay for student meals at www.mylunchmoney.com. This site allows parents to set up an account for
each child and pay for school meals with a credit or debit card. It works just like paying bills online. You will be able to check the amount
of money on your childs account and see when he/she ate. See the website or call the Student Nutrition Office for more details.

Students may charge up to ten meals at elementary schools, five meals at middle schools and two meals at high schools. Once the
charging limit is met students will be offered an alternative meal consisting of a cheese sandwich and a juice. Cashiers will be reminding
students and sending letters home that the students owe money for meals. Besides sending letters home about charges, parents may
also receive phone calls from school cashiers or from our automated calling system to remind them that students owe money or have a
low account balance. If the unpaid charges continue for two weeks, you will have to send a sack lunch with your child.

No meals will be allowed to be charged after April 30, 2013. You may call the cashier at your childs school, the Student Nutrition Office
or check www.mylunchmoney.com for account balance information.

NUTRITION INFORMATION:
Nutritious meals are essential for children to be ready to learn. Therefore, all our menus meet USDA Dietary guidelines for calories and %
of saturated fat as well as providing required vitamins and minerals. Menus can be viewed on line at the Los Lunas Schools website
under Student Nutrition.

SPECIAL DIETS:
Student Nutrition cannot alter meals for students unless the change has been ordered by a physician. All diet orders must be updated
every year after 1 July for the current school year. If you believe your child needs a diet order, please contact Student Nutrition 866-2490
for more details.

BREAKFAST:
It is well documented that children who eat breakfast learn better, have fewer trips to the nurses office and have fewer problems than
children who do not eat breakfast. If your student does not eat breakfast at home, please encourage him/her to eat at school so he/she is
ready to learn.

Applications for free and reduced meals are used to qualify schools for more than just school meals. Money for computers, library books
and additional teaching staff are determined by the number of free and reduced meal applications that have been completed at a school.
Please take the few minutes to fill out the application. It helps us all.

In accordance with Federal Law and the United States Department of Agriculture policy, this institution is prohibited from discriminating on

9992 or (202) 720-5964 (TTY). USDA is an equal opportunity provider and employer.

detailed list as your childs teacher may require additional supplies.
