WOOD AND WOOD PRESERVATIONA Complete Guide To the AS/NZS 1604 Standards Series
PREFACE
This Handbook has been produced to complement the requirements set out in the main
Standards on preservation of timber and wood-based composite products. It is particularly
relevant to users of the AS/NZS 1604 series of Standards. This series of Standards was
prepared by Joint Standards Australia and Standards New Zealand Committee TM-006,
Timber Preservation and Durability.
The Handbook is set out in two parts, as follows:

comments on recycling and disposal options for treated timber at the end of its
service life.

emphasizing penetration and retention as the minimum requirements for fit-forpurpose treated products.
The Handbook is intended as a guide to the AS/NZS1604 series of Standards and as such it
forms a complementary text to the series. It is not a comprehensive alternative document to
the Standards themselves.
The author wishes to thank a number of organizations for some of the illustrations used in
the text. He is particularly grateful to CSIRO, the Plywood Association of Australia, Hyne
& Son, Tilling Timber, futurebuild, Dindas Lew Australia, Koppers Timber Preservation,
Koppers Arch, and Osmose Australia.
The author is also indebted to Chi-nam Si of Standards Australia International for his
skilled assistance and encouragement.
This Handbook has been written by Harry Greaves and has not been reviewed by all
members of Committee TM-006
