Concrete photographs are not a semantic medium, but aesthetic objects: they are not represented, but presented, not reproduced, but produced. They are objects made of photographic material. They do not want to illustrate anything; they do not want to represent anything. They are nothing but themselves: objects referring to themselves: they are independent, authentic, autonomous, autogenic: photographs of photography.

The language of photography is not limited to the pictorial effects of the image and can include the effects created by tools of the medium. The choice of a particular camera, lens or film can communicate just as much to the viewer as the actual image.
