Mario Alberto Tobas Rincn Reading Processes August 29th, 2006 Reading Report: 2 Fostering Emergent/Early Literacy 1.

An informal, unstructured program works best in kindergarten. At the beginning I thought that it was something harmful for students since no organization was going to be present, but as I was reading I was convinced that an informal, unstructured program works best for children in this stage, and it could even be better organized. Kindergarten teachers have the opportunity to use different kinds of materials in their classes; they could include realia, pictures, songs, different kinds of books as well as computer software to help students to develop literacy skills. 2. time. This is quite helpful for young students, since they realize that reading is functional and it expresses something. They try to imitate adults reading and this is a way to motivate they to read and at the same time to develop reading skills. Cunning says that reading to students is the most important predictor of later reading achievement (31). It was found that children that were read to demonstrated a better academic achievement later in their school life than those who were almost never read to. 3. Allowing children to spell any way they can is harmful. I thought it could be harmful in the way that these misspellings could lead to fossilization and that could bring problems to the students later on in elementary school. On the other hand, the reading mentions that it is important to promote spelling in the way students think, since that will demonstrate that they have their own spelling which will later be modified Reading books to young children is an excellent use of instructional

when having the ability to read. They will then realize what the correct spelling of a word is. 4. Children at risk should have their literacy development accelerated It is not really the best way to promote literacy development. Cunning proposes to start where the students are, if they do not have a background in literacy, teachers should start from zero. Starting from the students level of proficiency is the best way in which students will feel more motivated to read and write. develop. 5. The best way to learn reading is through writing. My very personal point of view would be that the best way to learn writing is through reading. This is because students need to have first enjoyed reading and they must have first realized that reading expresses meaning, and that meaning is made up of sentences, and that sentences are made up of words, and that words are made up of letters. so on. 6. Childrens writing development would be accelerated if they were In this way, teachers then can motivate students to write their names, then the date, and If the process is accelerated, students might find themselves stressed because they are not able to understand what the teacher wants to so that they can catch up.

encouraged to learn to form the letters of the alphabet before attempting to write. The reading states that students do not really need to know how to write the letters from the alphabet first than writing something. It also says that the idea is to motivate students to write, even though they misspell words. Skills for writing will be developed through time, so students should write the way they think it is. Students might confuse the letters and might write the words with only consonants or just by how these words are

pronounced. This is not wrong at this age, since students are just starting the process of learning to read and write. 7. For young learners, childrens books and teacher-constructed They are the best sources for learning to read and write. As it was said before, teachers organization, creativity, and care would motivate students to develop these abilities. Teachers have to choose the books that are suitable to the level they are teaching. They have to organize their classroom so students could feel comfortable to read. The materials done by the teacher should be reachable to students so they can manipulate them. 8. Preschoolers should be taught some beginning phonics elements. It is important to always teach what has to be taught and a little more, so students could be ready to what comes next in first grade of school. Teachers can relate sounds to letters by simply asking their students how their names are pronounced and so give a sound to each letter or group of letters.
