INSTRUMENTAL MAJOR AUDITIONS:

CORNET
All instrumental majors must complete both a choral audition (for placement in one of the four choruses) and an instrumental audition (for placement in one of the five bands). Please read the audition instructions carefully and practice everything before you arrive!

INSTRUCTIONS: CHORAL AUDITION

15 YEARS OLD AND YOUNGER Option 1: Automatic placement in Kellner Womens or Ditmer Mens Chorus (Recommended for delegates who are not strong sight-singers) You will only need to demonstrate your singing range using simple scale patterns or triads (samples on the following page). You will be assigned to the appropriate chorus where basic sightsinging instruction will be incorporated into each choral rehearsal. Option 2: Open choral audition (Recommended for delegates who have some sight-singing experience) You must first demonstrate your range and sight-reading ability. If approved to proceed, you may then move to the audition site for those 16 and older to audition along with those delegates for either Cox or TMI Chorus. (See Option 1 below.) 16 YEARS OLD AND OLDER Option 1: Open choral audition (Recommended for delegates who have some sight-singing experience) For your audition, you should learn your part to the following excerpt entitled "O Praise Him!" In addition, be prepared to sing one or two short sight-singing examples. Option 2: Automatic placement in Kellner Womens or Ditmer Mens Chorus (Recommended for delegates who are not strong sight-singers) You will only need to demonstrate your singing range using simple scale patterns or triads (samples on the following page). You will be assigned to one of these choruses, where basic sight-singing instruction will be incorporated into each choral rehearsal. About the Choruses Because sight-singing is a vital skill for all musicians, two choruses (Kellner and Ditmer) have a strong focus on basic sight-singing to equip those singers who are not proficient in this area. These two choruses are divided by gender into the Kellner SSA Chorus (female voices) and Ditmer CTB Chorus (male voices) to allow for instruction specific to male and female voice ranges. The Cox Chorus (SATB) has an intermediate sight-singing focus for delegates who have basic sight-singing skill but are not yet at the level of proficiency required by the TMI Chorus. Choral auditions are divided by age and gender to help streamline the process.

INSTRUCTIONS: INSTRUMENTAL (BRASS) AUDITION

Each page of the brass audition music is progressively harder than the one before. Determine the hardest page that you are able to play well and practice everything on that page as well as the page before. If you have any doubt at all about which level you can play, please seek the advice of a teacher. For the first portion of the audition, you will be asked to play the page(s) you have prepared. There are scales, a hymn tune, and an etude on each page. The final three pages also include an excerpt from Salvation Army band literature. After playing this prepared material, you will be asked to play a short sight-reading example based on the level at which you auditioned.
