TASK 1:
SETTING THE ENVIRONMENT
Before starting the geometry creation you should set up the grid, toolbars and machine type as
outlined in the Setting the environment section at the beginning of this text:
1. Set up the Grid. This will help identify the location of the origin.
2. Customize the toolbars to machine a 3D part.
3. Set the machine type to a Haas Vertical Spindle CNC machine.

The base of the material is at Z -0.250. The base of the material and the 4.625 x 2.5
dimensions has been previously machined to size.
In this task you will create the right hand section that will be used to create the lofted
surface. First will be the creation of line 1 and 2. Next will be Arc 1, which has a radius of
1.25 and will be trimmed later. Finally Arc 2 and 3 will be created using fillet.

g
Ruled/Lofted Surfaces
A lofted surface is similar to a ruled surface; the difference being is a lofted surface uses splines
instead of lines.
You will be prompted to chain two or more curves or chains of curves from which the surface
will be created.
Use the Ruled and Lofted buttons to choose whether a ruled or lofted surface is created. The
Lofted option is the default.
You must have at least two contours in the graphics window to create a ruled or lofted surface.
You may change the contour options in the Chaining dialog box.
The direction of the arrow during contour definition can affect the position and direction of the
surface.
Create Lofted Surface
1. Select from the pull down menu: Create>Surface>Ruled/Lofted
2. On the graphics screen you are prompted: Lofted surface: define contour 1.

the radius of the tool we can ensure that the lead-in after a gap
will smoothly engage the tool into the material without a direct
plunge.

16. Select the Finish parallel parameters page, set the Total Tolerance to .001, then select
the Total Tolerance button and make changes to this page as shown below:
For finishing toolpaths, a tighter
tolerance, and an increased
Surface quality setting will
produce the most desirabale
results.
One way filtering forces the
filtering function to filter only from
one side of the surface to the
other (apply the filtering routine in
one direction only). This is
effective to avoid a wavy effect
between passes of the filtering
algorithm.
Smoothing Settings
CNC controllers have a
preference for the way they
receive coordinate data during
high speed machining. Some
prefer even spaced points, some
prefer a minimal number of points,
some prefer no arcs, etc. Make
selections here accordingly and
use high speed machining modes
if your machine/control has
support for them.

18. Select the Gap settings button and make changes to this page as shown below:
Gap Size
Increase the gap size if you want to avoid retracts and
control gap transitions with the Motion selections.
na
Motion
Determines the tool motion in areas smaller than the gap
size.
Direct moves the tool directly from position to position.
Broken moves the tool up and over or over and down.
Smooth moves the tool in a fluid motion.
Follow surface(s) matches the Z motion of the surface.
