APPENDIX A PROBLEM AS PRESENTED/DEFINED TO/BY

TEAM (APPENDIX TITLE)
A.1 PROJECT/PROBLEM STATEMENT ISSUED TO CLASS
BACKGROUND
A term paper is to illustrate and develop understanding about a subject in
engineering as early as possible in a students academic endeavors, it is
desirable to immerse students in a small term paper project in their undergraduation year in order to provide a report writing context/experience that can
be used as they proceed through the curriculum. The problem with this emersion
at this stage of the students academic career is that the student often are-yet-tobe-exposed to the physical phenomenon and analytical understanding necessary
for rudimentary mechanical engineering or manufacturing engineering.

One method to overcome the lack of exposure to manufacturing sciences is to

engage the student in a term paper writing task about a particular topic in
manufacturing. In this way, the student can understand the subject deeply while
researching about the manufacturing process and its history or future scope.
Analytical insights can be readily adopted and understood via research and not
be dependent just merely on an opportunity to get practical experience and
understanding.
TERM PAPER DESCRIPTION
Select a topic, research its history and contributions in modern manufacturing,
and investigate the theory and logical concepts behind the working principles and
fundamentals of a particular technology. The term paper will include historical
analysis as well as a presentation to the class at the end of the term paper
(presentations will be given as a team with equal contribution by each team
member).

DELIVERABLE/PROJECT OUTCOME SOUGHT

A

reasonably

detailed,

complete

report

that

includes

both

the

historical/current/future perspectives and scope with all underlying concepts of all

processes/operations understood/covered during the report writing process. The
report shall provide a full set of working principle illustrations, figures, sketches or
data tables etc. In addition, the report shall explicitly discuss and assess the
teams execution of the manufacturing technology/process review and current
involvement in manufacturing technology and identify future applications in
manufacturing technology.

Note: Failure to assess the quality of the performance in
unrealistic terms will result in little learning -and will not score well One hint claiming all As in a
bogus evaluation will reduce, not help your grade.
