opportunity to grow and advance her personal and career goals while acting as a role model in her community. Miss Webb entered the pageant with the title of Miss South Carolina Galaxy. She has been busy over the past months making public appearances on a state level. Now her focus will turn to promoting a global system. This is not the first time this young woman has captured the international spotlight. In 2010, she starred in an episode of the TV series, The King of the Crown, on the TLC Channel. The series ran for several months in North America and then aired in Asia. In 2010, Miss Webb won the state title of Miss Teen South Carolina United States. This title carried her to the national pageant in Las Vegas, Nevada. There she won the modeling competition in the Teen Division, which led to featured photos in the Supermodels Unlimited Magazine. Following the pageant, she modeled in a fashion show in Los Angeles, California. Mae-Ann Webb is a rising junior at the University of South Carolina acquiring a degree in Hotel, Restaurant and Tourism Management. She is a member of the Zeta Tau Alpha Sorority and will be performing with the Carolina Coquettes this fall at the Carolina football games with the USC Band. She continues to promote her platform, Royalty Reads, a program she has established which encourages children to read. Miss Webb is the daughter of Eddie and Mildred Webb and the sister of Cody Webb. She is the granddaughter of D. S. and Betty Ann Cone, Marion Webb and the late Mae Webb, all of Ridge Spring. rDa loan approved

Submitted Article Finally.. Three years ago, Town Council applied for a loan through Rural Development to improve our water and sewer systems. On August 1st at a called meeting with RDA representatives, and Senator Nikki Setzler, Council was presented with a Letter of Conditions establishing the guidelines that must be followed when the loan is made available to the town. The award was for $902,000 in loan and $367,200 in grant. Monies are not released to the town until each project is approved by RDA.

The proposed loan will be used to repair and repaint two elevated water tanks, evaluate the towns existing groundwater and upgrade the pumps, replace two booster pump stations, upgrade the sewer lines on the east side of Quattlebaum Street, which has been completed, and close out the abandoned lagoon under a SCDHEC consent order. Actual work will not begin immediately on any project since background work has to be done and then will have to meet RDA guidelines.

Last week was exciting for council. After three years of mountains of paper work, many conferences with engineers and Rural Development, and with the help of Senator Nikki Setzler, the Letter of Conditions for a loan/ grant was presented to, and

Mayor Pat Asbill

was accepted by the entire council. This loan will help to repair and update our very old water and sewer systems. The grant section of the agreement is to close out the old sewer lagoon. The Quattlebaum Street repair that was recently finished was a part of this loan and the $42,000 cost will be reimbursed to the town since this was considered an emergency situation and was covered in the loan request.

Dawn of a new era

Corley looks to bring positive change to RS-M
the task. We have a core group of 20-25 guys who have been here through the tough times. Theyve been here all year, busting their butts, and they have really bought in, Corley said. We have a good group of seniors, and these kids hold each other to a higher standard. Theres commitment without question here, and they pressure each other to be better. Last year the team was held to eight points or less six times, including three shutouts. Scoring was at a premium for the Trojans all year, and it is something Corley hopes to change. We think just having the ability to do more offensively, through different formations, can improve that, he said. We just have to use our personnel and put them in the right positions. The more comfortable they get, the better theyll do.
RETURNING STARS The Trojans are looking for big things out of their junior quarterback Reggie Preston. Hes a mobile quarterback, and that forces the defense to pay extra attention, Corley said. He has been taking charge of the offensive group at a crucial position. Hes been throwing the ball a lot better than I expected. RS-Ms running game also features two running backs, Wesley Bright and A.J. Hopkins. Those two guys have led by example in practice and in the weight room, Corley said. Wes is our power back, and A.J. is our speed guy. Were expecting both of them to be big contributors.

By Scott RodgeRS
2011 IN REVIEW Times are changing for the Trojans. Mark Rodgers, who spent the last decade at Ridge Spring-Monetta, has moved on to Wardlaw Academy. Though the team won only three games last year, the Rodgers Era led to a playoff appearance in 2004, a 2006 Division II Upper State championship and advancement to the state championship and another berth in the Upper State Championship. The team fell on some hard times for the past four years, but now the team is tasked with moving forward. In steps Heath Corley, a longtime assistant at Williston-Elko. Corley knows it is an uphill climb, but it is a challenge he accepts. His team seems to also be up to

NEW FACES The Trojans dont have a big roster to begin with. In fact, they will flip around

eight guys from offense to the defensive side of the ball. So when they lose eight seniors to graduation, its a pretty big deal. On the offensive line that means freshman Trenton Herrin. That kid is very quiet, Corley said. With him, I dont have to worry. He gives maximum effort, hes hard nosed, and hell just keep getting better as the year goes on. Though hes a senior, many may not have heard of O.B. Gilliam. Under the new regime, though, Gilliam has flourished and turned into a leader. Hes the most vocal guy out there, Corley said. Were going to be asking a lot out of him, too. Hes going to play some receiver and tight end, then were going to flip him around and play him on defense. Us coaches think hell not only handle it, but excel. Overall, though, the Trojans will have a

Theyre going to be going up against juniors and seniors that are bigger than them and have played longer. But were just gonna throw them out there under the lights and see what theyre made of. GAMES TO WATCH With a new season, a new coach and many new names, its only natural that the first game is extra special. For the Trojans, that is a home matchup against Pelion. For all the work weve put in during the offseason, you want to do things right that first game, Corley said. There are all new expectations, and everyone starts off on equal footing. Week One will feature Corleys first introduction to the RS-M/Saluda rivalry. Thats not only a big game for us, but also the community, he said. Week Eight will feature a matchup that pits Corley against his former school, Williston-Elko. Playing those guys may not mean much for the kids, but it will be very nostalgic for me personally, he said. North comes calling the following week, and the Trojans wrap up their regular season at Wagener-Salley. Those final two games will be big for the kids and playing those teams in particular, Corley said. so effective without the big guys up front. Unlike many teams in the area, the Trojans have found their kicking specialist in Wesley Bright. He played soccer and has a booming leg, Corley said. He may not have the feel for football that he does with soccer just yet, but we believe a lot in what he can do. The team will use a multitude of players as return specialists, including Wigfall, Hopkins and Mike Jones. Anyone can catch a ball in practice, Corley said. Its a different animal when game time rolls around. Well see who will be best suited for that role as the season progresses though.

Rushton Makes Sweet Music

By Anne Waits Jason Rushton can barely remember a time in his life when he wasnt making music. There was always a guitar around the house when I was growing up, he said. My uncle, Gary Rushton, played the guitar and took lessons. When I was 5 or 6 years old, my dad bought me a guitar because I asked for one. When he was 8, he bought himself a better quality one. My uncle told me there was a guy in Johnston who taught guitar lessons, he said. His name was Buddy Walker. Rushton and Walker soon became fast friends. Buddy was like my daddy, he said. He taught me a lot. That included how to play guitar, bass and pedal steel guitar. Ive been playing in bars since I was 9 years old, Rushton said. Buddy would take me along. I followed him everywhere. Walker died in 2004 and it left a big hole in Rushtons life. But he has done his best to carry on the legacy that Walker left him. He describes his music style as countrycountry. These days, you hear terms like cross-over country, new country, and alternative country, he said. Mine is just plain country. His influences, he said, have included artists George Strait, George Jones, Merle Haggard and Alan Jackson. Locally, Rushton has played with Joel Summer in Nobodys Hero and filled in with Bill Johns in Southern Conduct and with Joyce Rude and the Rude Dudes. He has been a member of such bands as Sons of the South and Shiloh. And he has filled in with Gino Lesage, formerly with Colin Ray. He has played local gatherings such as the Carolina Jamboree in Belvedere and other events such as the annual Harvest Festival in Ridge Spring and festivals in Wrens and Soperton, Ga. He has played with bands in a little bigger name venues such as Coyotes and the Country Club in Augusta, Ga., and lately a lot bigger name ones such as Wild Bills in Duluth, Ga. and the Wild Horse Saloon in Nashville, Tenn. In January, Rushton played bass and steel guitar for Dallas Duffs album recorded at a studio in Augusta, Ga. Duff wrote a song entitled, Prayer for a Fallen Hero, as a memorial to J.D. Paugh and other officers killed in the line of duty. In addition, Rushton occasionally does his own thing at weddings and other events, and dabbles a bit in gospel with Leon Everettes band. I heard him perform at a wedding back in the spring, said Eleanor Crim of Johnston. I thought his music was excellent. He sang, I Cross My Heart by George Strait and Must Be Doing Something Right by Billy Currington. If I had to pay someone to do a wedding, it would be him. In 2006, Rushton became acquainted with members of the Scott Brantley Band, formerly known as DeepStep. We were playing a show up this way, said Scott Brantley, lead vocalist and guitar player. A mutual friend told us about Jason. He filled in for us and gradually he became full-time. Rushton originally played pedal steel guitar, but the bass player quit and he switched to bass. Brantley lives in East Dublin, Ga. while Chris Fleming, guitarist, lives in Comer, Ga., and Troy Holcomb, drummer, originally from Saluda, lives in Baldwin, Ga. They get together and practice in Athens, Ga. The band has recently took off, playing at Day in the Country in Augusta and the Vidalia Onion Festival this year, and sharing the stage in various places with big name artists. The band is a threetime winner of the Georgia Country Band of the Year Award. They are currently working on a record label in Nashville with producer Carson Chamberlain, a

former steel guitar player for Leon Everette. We completed an E-P six-song CD, said Rushton. It was exciting. We recorded at Sound Stage Studios in Nashville where lots of famous artists record. The band has a show coming up Oct. 16 with John Conlee at the fairgrounds in Hiawassee, Ga. At 34, Rushton may well be on his way to the top. How does he feel about that? Well, you get out there and you

beat the pavement and you see what happens, he said. I have a few mixed feelings. But Ill continue to go with the flow until the Lord changes it. I let Him dictate where I go and what I do. Hell direct me. He said his main focus, of course, is family. Rushton lives in Johnston with his wife Deanna, who works at Peachtree Medical Clinic in Edgefield and Ridge Spring. They have two children, Jacob, 9, and Makayla, 6.

Renovations, planning begin for schools

By ROB NOVIT rnovit@aikenstandard.com
The Aiken High School campus is looking a lot different these days, with more changes to come. Trees have been cleared between the main building and the North Annex - getting ready for the construction of a new wing that includes science labs and other classrooms. Construction is tentatively scheduled for completion by early 2014. Work is continuing for a new kitchen/ cafeteria and front facade at Jackson Middle School. Those facilities could be ready for occupancy soon after the Christmas break in a few months, said David Caver, the Aiken County School Districts deputy superintendent. A new restroom facility for the gym at Busbee Corbett Elementary Middle School is under construction.

A major Ridge Spring-Monetta High School construction project for a new wing should be put out for bids soon. The new wing will bring grades 6-8 to the campus from RS-M Elementary/Middle School and also provide a cafeteria that the middle and high school grades will share. Some preliminary planning for an addition to North Augusta High School is under way.

Students receive diplomas at summer school

By ROB NOVIT rnovit@aikenstandard.com
Cherise Dawkins, a Silver Bluff High School senior, graduated from summer school Monday, smiling a lot as she received her diploma from Silver Bluff s new principal, Collette Johnson. In addition to her family members, Dawkins had some other fans there - her culinary arts teacher, Susan Few; and her guidance counselor, Cathy Neal. It means a lot to me that theyre here, and it made me smile, Dawkins said. She plans to attend a cosmetology school in Columbia. A total of 25 students received their diplomas, but only 11 were able to attend, said Aiken County Schools Superintendent Dr. Beth Everitt. Im proud of them, Everitt said. Every single graduate here is important to us. They will have a successful life because they know they have to have an education. The other graduates were Tyeshia Johnson and Samuel Sisson, Aiken High; Aulstin Beard, Matthew House, Kwashane Robison, Seth Futral and Da-Rell Jones, North Augusta High; Christopher Fussell and Lynli Gantt, Midland Valley High; and Denzel Wise, Ridge Spring-Monetta High. Deputy Superintendent David Caver told the graduates they didnt let anyone stand in their way of getting a diploma. Now you are on a level playing field with any other graduate, he said. I challenge you to let this be a start, not an ending. Continue to learn and grow in your job endeavors and profession. You will be asked to go back to school and learn and get advanced training. I urge you to embrace that.
